From experience, I made a baby blanket for my first grandchild from a thinner yarn. It became her favorite cuddle blanket, and the thin yarn wore out in several sections. I have had to repair it several times. For grandchild #4, I used I Love This Yarn to make it sturdier.
Thanks for all the information. Very helpful as usual. I tend to stick to acrylic yarn for blankets especially if I am gifting them. I never want to burden the recipient with special care instructions.
This was very helpful. One thing I want to mention, particularly as blankets use more skeins than most other projects... if you are using more than one skein of the same color it's best to check that all of the skeins are from the same dye lot. There can be variations in color in different dye lots. Thanks!
When I found out I was having a granddaughter I decided to make her a blanket. I found a pattern called "Adeline" and my granddaughter's name is Adaline so I wanted to make her blanket using that pattern. I used the bamboo yarn and it was my 1st time using it. It was so thin and so almost delicate that if it wasn't for my determination of making that blanket I probably would have given up. It definitely ended up being a labor of love. I really like how it turned out. Now I know that Im not a fan of the thinner yarn. lol
This was the second time watching this video. I’m trying to make a blanket for your baby blanket project. The first one I made was for my great grand baby and after I had it made I knew I had not chosen the softest or best yarn. But it was my first try at anything special, this time I will make a swatch for sure. Thanks again for your great videos!
I find Category 4 sized yarns offer the best selection and variety for the price. But maybe you're looking to make a big blanket for a teen headed to college or something. Don't overlook the option of simply holding two or three strands of the yarn together while you crochet the stitch for the blanket.
I can not thank you enough for your teachings . I am beginner and I soak up anything new I can learn about crchet. So again thank you very much . Hugs !
I made a “legacy” blanket for my son with 50% wool and 50% acrylic. It was heavy but it came out great. It was a chevron pattern in a modified double crochet. I washed it in cold water and it came out great.
Thank you so much for your helpful and delightful videos Tiffany. I made a blanket once and definitely the wrong choice of yarn as it was sooo heavy and yet not very warm at all 😅 so wish I'd seen this video before I made that project.
Well, this was so, so helpful! I’m getting ready to make a blanket or two for Christmas gifts (yes, I’m starting now because I have so many hobbies and crafts to do which I love) and just ran across the mandala ombré that I understand makes great afghans because of the gentle color changes instead of the abrupt color changes of the original mandala yarns. It’s a 4 weight which I am going to try with the Tunisian crochet method. Since I ordered it last night from Lion brands site, I hope you will agree that this is a good decision for a soft, colorful, and easy care blanket. I searched everywhere to find how many “cakes” to use for the size of a 50x65 size afghan and bought 9 cakes. Do you think I made a good decision? 😅if only you made this video about 10 hours earlier. I also figured if I needed that many skeins I wasn’t going to find that many of the same color in my local store is another good reason to shop on line. Love, love your videos😘
Very helpful information. I made quite a few blankets from Bernat Blanket/ baby blanket yarn. So soft and warm but your are right, it doesn’t show much stiff definition. Still great to work with.
I want to make a merino wool blanket, but it's... Pricey, and often really thin! It'd be great where I live, since it can easily get -30°c during winters. It's cold.
I learned and crocheted for years with thread. When I started to crochet with yarn I had a hard time adjusting to the thicknesses. I now crochet with yarn but stick to the thinner ones. Like fingering, sport and the thickest DK. I make blankets with DK and I always use merino wool. It's easy on the hands and wears beautifully. If you get super wash it beats acrylic. Just my thoughts and preferences. Love you Chanel and the great information you share
I always appreciate personal experiences being shared! It helps to grow perspectives that are often unrelatable to others but understood. Thank you! 😊❤️🧶
I use mostly acrylic yarns but I also use mixed fibers as well. I am making in scrap blanket and the yarns I am using go from worsted weight to more DK and fine weight yarns.
Thanks Tiffany this was very helpful information. I have used Burnett blanket and baby blanket yarn quite often to make gifts, and while it is warm and squishy and easy to work with you are right, you lose quite a bit of stitch definition. Everybody still loves them though :-)
Hi Tiffany Hansen right now I am working on my cottage core mosaic blanket and granny squares blanket and solid color granny squares blanket and butterfly 🦋 mosaic blanket and I love your channel and your videos and if you keep making videos I will keep watching them and what is your favorite crochet project to work on right now and favorite types of yarn to used when crocheting and keep up the great work on your TH-cam channel and keep up the great work on your TH-cam channel
Great Video & I appreciate how you explained everything!!! I just got started a few weeks ago. I've been buying "practice" yarn based on colors I like, lol. I'm only on level two btw, (sc & hdc). I did a whole skein of hdc (with 175 loops/stitches)!!! Yeah, I'm not counting as I go at all with that amount. It was supposed to just be a practice thing but my daughter saw it & asked if I could keep going & make her a blanket. It's a big project considering I've only touched a hook & yarn less than a month ago, but how can I say no lol. Of course I cant find the orginial colorful yarn yet-the search continues! I dont think I like the feel of this nes stuff I bought so your video is right on time for me. Thanks for being so helpful!
If you are using Red Heart super saver ombre be sure you are getting the correct color. Look for whether it's made in the USA it'll happen u.s. flag on it or made in Turkey or India they will not match they look the same but they're not. Be sure you look at that.
Caron Simply Soft has been a good one for baby blankets for me. Readily available, many colors, launders well and soft. All have been well received by their new homes. 🧶
My sister in law made me a beautiful ivory afghan couch throw. Only a few years of light use it has little fuzz balls all over it. I used a sweater shaver but my main question is Im getting ready to make a blanket for my daughter is there a yarn that doesnt get fuzzy balls all over it which I think ages it?
My friend with autism loves heavy blankets, and I'd love to make one for her. Are there any yarn recommendations? I'd preferred it if it wasn't too bulky, as i'm new to crochet, and that seems overwhelming. When I googled it Bernat Maker was suggested.
You are such a sweet friend for wanting to make this special blanket. There are 2 ways to make a heavy blanket. Either go thicker yarn or dense and bulky stitches. The thicker yarn may be different to work with because of its size but you will be able to crochet the blanket faster and if you can find sales and coupons, cheaper. It you choose to use a medium size 4 weight yarn, which is possibly the most common size, you will be able to achieve a heavy blanket though to do so you will need to use a stitch that will be quite the yarn eater as you will need to have a dense stitch will little to no holes AND you will need the stitch to stack up or have a 3D look going on to increase weight and trap heat. There are so many yarns on the market now that you do have options. My recommendation would be to find a size 6 super bulky yarn that your friend would like the texture of and then just work a half double crochet in the front loop only pattern for the whole thing. It’s a super pretty and super easy pattern and the yarn size will supply the weight for you. If you really want to use a size 4 weight yarn, I’d recommend a Bobble Stitch over most of the blanket. Maybe you could make stripes of bobble rows and half double crochet rows. I hope this helps. 🤗💖🧶
hey, thnx for the time and the information. which yarn is better for a baby blanket, 4 month - 1 year baby. to be good for summer and autumn? thank you
Love this❤ just a question when you said about cotton yarn either there are wearable ones or used for dish cloth how do u differentiate which cotton yarn is used for what

Ok I’m making Flower, Granny Square, throw. Would u recommend a worsted or cotton blend? Could u please tell what brand to use for nice drape?
hey, thnx for the time and the information. which yarn is better for a baby blanket, 4 month - 1 year baby. to be good for summer and autumn? thank you
OH, great question. Funny enough I would go alpaca, It's so soft and actually helps regulate temperature plus it's breathable. 🤗❤️🧶
Big twist value on sale for $2.99. At joann's. I made premature baby blanket.
I like the look and feel of Big Twist but it’s not machine wash and dry able. Not sure why they did that. .
i wish i had found you sooner T^T this video is super important thak you! super easy to understand you
Thank you so much ! Just received my yarn for the most recent sweater Tutorial ! ❤

Garment is softer.

yes that is a nice blanket. So is it yarn bee cotton?
Your Couch would look great with a crocheted cover on it.
Thanks Tiffany!
Thanks!
How do you determine how many skeins to buy for a project?
Oohhh! Check out my Swatch Series to find that out! 👍🏻🤗❤️🧶
Thank you! ❤
4 Worsted weight yarns work for adult blankets, whereas, Bernat Baby blanket or Bernat blanket yarn is good for baby blankets. Period.
70 by 160 baby throw moss stich
The problem with acrylic yarn is that each time you wash it, it releases micro plastics into the environment. I never use it.
Exactly! From blanket into the washer into the River into the Ocean into the fish into the humans. What goes around comes around... 😥
Everything you use produces microplastics......
💜
thank you for saving me 🩷
Thanks!
Thank you so much Alicjaadamczyk1748!!! You’re super thanks means the world!! 🥰❤️❤️🧶🧶
