On gosh, I just watched this video again to write down this formula and "Bob's Your Uncle" really cracks me up. I LOVE that saying ! Also, LOVE the help with calculating this formula. Thanks so much ladies!!!
This blows my mind...wow! Every pattern I have seen states the gauge for a 4" x 4" swatch which is suggested to knit before making a project, and I get it. It is a way to determine your personal gauge and how many stitches per inch. But you just blew this traditional method away with a much quicker method that goes by inches per stitch using five rows of 20! (100 stitches)! I need to watch this video again! I saved it under my favs. Thank you! This is a brilliant! Hey I may buy your book!
Awesome explanation. From a fashion design background, I vision this intricate design for my cardigan. Never crocheted one before, but I was up for the challenge. Using an entire skien, I was able to determine what I needed with extra. This fall, WIP. 🤗

This was exactly what I wanted to know and was trying to figure out. I really am limited in supplies so knowing what a project will take is so helpful. Also you showed how to make the gauge and shared some examples. I am definitely going to check out Marly's site and Annes book. Thank you both!!
Amazing!!! I need to calculate yardage for a cowl so this is perfect timing. I just knitted a swatch specifically to ascertain my gauge per 4". So I need to knit an additional swatch with 100 sts to ascertain the yardage required. I need to knit two swatches. Is this correct? Thank you so much, ladies. I look forward to your response.
Are you saying that regardless of the pattern I am going to use, I should knit the swatch in stockinette and not the pattern? So if I require 82 rows and cast on 83 stitches the yardage required would be 82 x 83 x gauge achieved with the swatch? I am back to knitting after about 30+ years and so much to learn. Thank you for sharing. I hope to hear from you soon.
Start with sc’s. chain 21, sc in second chain from hook and in each ch -20 sts Change color and tie on to old color like in video to get the knot. Then *turn, ch1, sc in each sc to end. Repeat from * 4 more times. Fasten off. You now have 100 sts in sc with the second color. You can now follow the math.

excellent! something that is well needed to know in the crochet community!

Wow such a great tool to use!
When crocheting in rows, how do you count the chain stitch from turning the work?
This is brilliant.

I kinda feel like Sally at that deli... Thanks!
Thanks 😊
So how many? 3-5 balls of yarn?
Are you saying that regardless of the pattern I am going to use, I should knit the swatch in stockinette and not the pattern?

I think it would be more convenient to knit the swatch in pattern.
I'd like to try you chic sheep yarn (Red Heart.) How / where do I find where to buy it? I live in a VERY rural area and would need to order on-line.
Good morning
HELLO TO ALL
Thank You Maam.
Maam can you please tell me that 1 SKEIN Means How Many Grams WOOL is it.
Regards Roshni.
Could you weigh the yarn used as well?
Yes. That is another way to do it.
So when crocheting do you just chain 100 and pull it out or do you have to do a row 1?
for crochet, you would need to calculate stitch repeats vs stitches. So, you could do 10 stitch repeats and figure out the math from there I think.
Marly Bird I think I need to watch the video again, lol 🤯 my brain did not compute that. Or do you think the video is geared more toward knitting?
Start with sc’s. chain 21, sc in second chain from hook and in each ch -20 sts

Marly Bird Thank you! You’re a Rockstar, Marly!
This is useful! As for double or triple crochet etc, I need to do the calculations as per different type of crochet stitches is it? :)
Qtas cores lindas🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
My new motto, because I talked to much in math class; NO MATH NO PROJECT. I force myself to do to the math.
