It's everything so professional and it shows that you've grown a lot without giving up your roots (driveway and common tools). I am so glad people like you care about helping other people to sacrifice so much of your time to make videos like this. I save so much money because of wonderful people like you. Thanks a billion times over. Ignore the jealous haters. You are greatly appreciated by many other people you have helped.
I see a few comments on here criticizing the paint job. The truth is, these videos that he does are for people who don't necessarily have a paint booth, an air compressor, a spray gun and all of the tools that a body shop would have. Why? Because it helps those who don't have these things or the money to make their crappy cars (myself included) look less crappy. If you have better tools you can use, by all means, do a better job and make videos. Why bust this guy's chops for trying to teach someone something new? And yes, I know this video is from 2013. It just irritates the hell out of me when people have nothing better to do with their time than nitpick. I do have one question Chris... Would clear coating help in any way with the durability or look of the finished product?
+thejudgemeister thanks man! Clear coat would help with durability but the black paint I used is pretty good without clear coat.m since it's bumper paint. It still looks great!
THIS is a homemade paint job, and the steps are correct. The emphasis I gave heard from Chris several times on PREPARATION are spot on, pro tips. This is a driveway job done right, except for the over spray which is compound then clay on paint, and steel wool and clay on glass. Chris makes excellent videos and informed decisions. ( Exept for the door gap. It should be papered from both sides in the gap to control over spray )
I have question chris fix I am going to do this on my 2001 ford ranger on the trim and bumper and I was wondering is the paint still look good after 3 years
I need your advice. See I have a 1995 saturn sl1 4 door sedan...your gona have to google it because I have a very small trim size than yours so you can see for yourself. I have the same exact problem you have only a little worse. I have rust on the black door trim itself. I mean you can see very small black paint spots from how it looked back in the day only the majority of the trim is just outline with rust. Looks like a rusted door trim mixed with spots of black paint that held up pretty good in that one spot. What are the steps to get that door trim back the way it was? How much grit sand paper? I need your help. Thanks.
+Dave S. If you have rust, start with a grittier sandpaper like 400, 200 if it's really bad. Then use a primer specifically for rust. If you have the trim like Chris does, I would remove it so you have more area to work with.
+James Mallia, I used black/gray primer because if the paint gets scratched down to the primer, you wont see the primer easily. If you use red, and you get a scratch, red will show easily against black paint.

Chris, you should consider wet-sanding the finish paint with 2000 girt sandpaper and then after through cleaning put a mat clear-coat on it. Don't forget to wet-sand the clear coat! Paint looks good!
I like how you make the videos about the process instead of "you'. Some of these other channels focus too much on the individual as the brand. I think that's why "Food Wishes" is so successful too.
Love the videos man. You do a really good job. There's something you should try when using spray paint to make it come out less streaky and more even. Get a bucket or bowl of really hot water and let your cans sit in it for around 5-10 min. Then when you spray it comes out really fine and more even
What I like about your tutorials is that you don't harp on the faults of the car manufacturers, It is what it is. I assume you have some sponsorship from Ford so that's cool. Sometimes you use the term "poor design" but don't harp on it. Love your vids and have used the tips on my beater car.

Clear-coat does come in a spray can. As for your whaler, it is probably not a clear coat. Most boats are fiberglass with a gel-coat finish. I dont know how bad the finish is, but most of the time a buffer, some polish, some wax, and a lot of elbow grease can get that hull looking like new. I love whalers, such great boats!
I just got a project truck after watching a ton of your videos....looking forward to learning more as I keep watching your videos. Yes, I'll be painting my car, as well.
Chris just so you know, I don't like your videos, I LOVE THEM. you should be proud of quality work and knowledge at what you do, I've learned a lot from you, that I feel like I know what I am doing sometimes, of course is the confidence you give us. I bet it is a bearing... I have a video on how to replace that. Just search youtube for "How to Change a Wheel Bearing (long and detailed version)". I also have a shorter version. The beginning of the video has what it sounds like when it is bad. Let me know if this helps.
In the door gap, ad paper taped the full length inside the door, and on the other side too, inside the door jamb. That controls over spray into the truck. The over spray on paint is rubbed with compound, then barred with clay bar. Overspray onto glass gays steel wool, then clay bar. Overall this is excellent for anyone not able to use "good", "professional" equipment.

I think this was part of his progression as a content supplier. He now always starts with his 'Hey Guys - Chris Fix here!' but this was before that. It has now become his trade mark - even has Merch with it lol. He makes great content tho.
I think the fact that you did the work yourself and took your time and made sure you did everything that you could in preparation made you happy with the results. Truth is, you don't really get the factory look when you use store-bought spray cans. For the work that you did it turned out good but if I'm being critical as if I did the work, I'd say it still has some orange-peel type finish which is not what you want on any of your car paint surfaces.
Nice video, shows a well thought out plan to update the faded accent panels to a better look. The best part is it is a great "shade tree"/ driveway fix, saving a lot of money for the owner and using materials easily obtained. It doesn't have to be concours d'elegance quality it just has to do the job needed for the time and money spent. 👍👍👍
I used this information to re-do the fender flares on my Nissan Pickup. I had them off already, so I just went with painting right off the bat. Thank you for the Bumper Paint recommendation.
Acetone is better then Alcohol, it removes all contaminants, and it's evaporation rate much faster and leaves no residue, and should ALWAYS use a block when sanding if can, the minute pressure of your individual fingers will leave different sanding material removal patterns where your fingers had more pressure. edit, ps, thank you, have a 2001 Mazda B 3000, essentially a Ford Ranger and the black on my truck shot too, lol in same places. so ty for the video, will definatelt use the Rust Oleum product
I used to have the Ford version of this truck with the "Edge" package on it and a painted to match camper shell. I really do miss that truck... It was a lot of fun. :)

Wow, Chris you're the best. I'm just a teenager and do work on my dad's car for him. You make the hardest jobs easy and fun! Thx for all your help. Check out my channel!
Thanks Chris, I want to re-paint the black (trim paint) on two of my cars, but I was unshure about how to go about it. Thank you for showing how to do it step by step, I think I dare to attempt it myself now!
This is the subject I was looking for............ The answer us just as relevant to the masking tape adhesive. Use NO CHEMICALS on the paint. Clay bar is made exactly for over spray. Rubbing compound also takes it off well. I thought of your approach in this context. We painted a Porsche Panamera fender. The over spray was amazing, about the size of a basketball. There is absolutely no way you will ever get that much over spray off correctly with acetone or another chemical and not ruin the paint in some manner. Then you only have to respray a 60 day old, $150,000 Porsche. Good luck. Clay bar saved us from botching up a $5000 fender paint job. Clay and compound is all we used.
My trim was faded. Eureka i used black shoe polish scuff. Looks excellent, easy to apply with the foam applicator. Im leaving it as is for now thought about armoror all on top. If its good for shoes should last. Easy and looks good.
Again, such a interesting vid. When I spray paint items, no matter what, I also spay in couple of thin layers. But the final layer I sprayed slightly thicker than the layers I put on before, on this way the paint will smooth out nicely and you'll get a fine flat surface. So for example: 1 or 2 thin layers of paint. After it is dry, put the finishing coat. This coat will fill up the 'orangepeel-look' you'd made with the first 1/2. Think I will make a vid of it by myself in the near future how I'd like to do it. Ok Chris thans for the vid's, and can't wait to see you're upcomming. All the best amigo.
NEVER use acetone/nail polish remover to remove overspray. It will eat up you vehicle's finish. The paint used was oil based, so paint thinner is your best bet. You can also use that in place of rubbing alcohol to clean your surfaces prior to paint. I LOVE your videos man.
3m tape that he used is actually what's used in the auto industry. Painters tape is intended for home latex paints as it is less sticky and won't pull off the latex paint it's stick too.
Thought I was the only one to use the razor knife trick on mask jobs. Perfect every time. Rattle can paint jobs work well with no orange peel if you first lay a light tac coat, then a heavier wet coat. More even shine and less orange peel. Easy to do in sun light.
I started doing custom automotive painting back in the mid '70's painting custom vans in Anaheim and we did 3 vans a day and after one of our painters moved to our new facility in the Bay area I cleared coated the 3 vans and had to keep it wet without running it and in 10 months never had a run in the clear and one morning there it was, my first run and made the mistake of wet sanding it and buffing it out and after that we had to wet sand anything that left the shop because of the mirror finish it left.I've done trim in a textured finish that looks awesome when done evenly and I set the texture standards back in the '80's in the computer industry at KeyTronics Corp in Spokane and have done a lot of custom motorcycle painting in So Cal and still like to grab one of my old Devilbiss spray guns just to keep up on the new coatings out. I even had a paint shop in the Northwest where I did Military Spec painting for the Defense Department so I know a little bit about paint and applications of it.Mr. Valspar here didn't get 'rekt' I just pointed out that the finish was less than perfect.
Great video, only thing I would add is a coat of 1 or 2k at the end for protection. I added a few coats of 1k clear matte and turned out 💯. My neighbors think I’m a weirdo but my car loves me 👊🏻
chris, i just wanted to let you know that if you have a 2 pack paintjob on your car, the paint is solvent resistant, so no matter what you put on the paint it should not effect it, if the car has been repaired by a body shop and you were on a budget, they may have used acrylic paint which is not resistant to fuel and is not as strong as 2 pack paints, also 2 pack means there's a paint and a hardener so it's chemically hardened which is why most car brands use it, so if you use nail polish remover to get rid of overspray on an oem finish there shouldn't be any problems. one more thing about 2 pack paints is that if your car was made before 1990 it Will have acrylic paint as 2 pack paints weren't used until the 90's.

Wow, Chris you're the best. I'm just a teenager and do work on my dad's car for him. You make the hardest jobs easy and fun! Thx for all your help. Check out my channel!
Liam Persse Thanks a lot man! I am glad you like my videos and they are helpful!
ChrisFix now I know why you got the name Chris fix!
Thanks Chris, I want to re-paint the black (trim paint) on two of my cars, but I was unshure about how to go about it. Thank you for showing how to do it step by step, I think I dare to attempt it myself now!
Wrecker '56 It was a lot of fun! Take your time in the prep. It is all about the prep! Take some before and after shots too!
ChrisFix do you wanna borrow my car for a month so you can do stuff to it? lol
Abdul Hariri Hahaha
You make it easy. Always learn alot and gain confidence watching each of your videos. Keep up the great work!
Oh God, acetone? Use a clay bar, no need to use harsh chemicals on your paint
Thanks for sharing
+TacticalBBQSauce I used a white rubber eraser once that worked quite well with some elbow grease.
any polish or rubbing compound will also do the job.
Seriously? Acetone works greatď
My trim was faded. Eureka i used black shoe polish scuff. Looks excellent, easy to apply with the foam applicator. Im leaving it as is for now thought about armoror all on top. If its good for shoes should last. Easy and looks good.
Back to black is only good for non painted plastic.
It’s not a permanent fix though
+Jan Dootjes Thanks Jan and thanks for the tips!
You sound depressed in your intro, I'm here if you need to talk
Johnathan Ravan This is 3 years ago, I guess when he started initially. Over the years he's worked on presentation.
NEVER use acetone/nail polish remover to remove overspray. It will eat up you vehicle's finish. The paint used was oil based, so paint thinner is your best bet. You can also use that in place of rubbing alcohol to clean your surfaces prior to paint. I LOVE your videos man.
0:51 face reveal !!
Anoop Thawait omg, thank you!!! It doesnt match the voice though
wow Chris, you've come a long way, congratulations on the success. and thanks for the great video to help me restore my trim
Okay..... So you do have a face
Thanks for all your videos. They helped me make my 1990 toyota tacoma truck look brand new. THANKS!!
No problem bud!
+ChrisFix thanks for responding😆
Please use painters tape next time
+Saif Alkuwaiti thanks for the tip!
Do a face review
That would be kind of weird.
Definitely come a long way in his videos
Paint looked very uneven, dull and glossy areas.
You need to put a good wet coat on last coat.
Thanks for the tip! It evens out once it drys completely. That is the type of paint this is.
Ken Doe Mr. Valspar just got rekt.
Chris, even after you put the trim back on it should have been somewhat completely dry and it still looked uneven.
My neighbors think I’m a weirdo but my car loves me 👊🏻
Great tip!
Terrific! My old Sonata needs that!
I don't know if you said it or if anyone else has, but if you have some overspray left on the paint, a claybar is very useful in taking it off.
+G-Man Thanks for the tip!
chris, i just wanted to let you know that if you have a 2 pack paintjob on your car, the paint is solvent resistant, so no matter what you put on the paint it should not effect it, if the car has been repaired by a body shop and you were on a budget, they may have used acrylic paint which is not resistant to fuel and is not as strong as 2 pack paints, also 2 pack means there's a paint and a hardener so it's chemically hardened which is why most car brands use it, so if you use nail polish remover to get rid of overspray on an oem finish there shouldn't be any problems. one more thing about 2 pack paints is that if your car was made before 1990 it Will have acrylic paint as 2 pack paints weren't used until the 90's.
Masterclass in trim painting.
