  • In this video I will be reviewing Rust Oleums Trim and Bumper Paint on the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have never used it before and was real interested in how it would look. Much to my surprise it turned out great.

    I have used Rustoleum truck bed coating on plastic trim in the past. It gives it a flat look and it adds non skid texture. The initial application took about 4-5 years before it started pealing/ got faded.

    I like to use the truck bed coating that sprays out of the can for my black trim it gives it more of a rugged textured look and still last.

    Nice job! I'm restoring a 1997 Land Rover Discovery 1 and just had the front bumper powder coated with a shinny hammered look, which looks fantastic. Now I'm trying to determine what to use on the plastic ends of the bumper and will consider the Rust-Oleum, but some people tell me the Forever Black works just as well if not better. It is not a spray, it has a square foam tip and when you squeeze the bottle the form gets wet and you apply it. It too looked great when I was finished.

    • @JA-rn5qv
      @JA-rn5qv หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Forever black works great for "instant" results but like some many other products of it's kind, only lasts about a year or less. The Rustoleum Trim & Bumper Paint will last 3 to 4 years before needing a refresh or even longer if you apply a UV resistant clear top coat after you have applied the Trim & Bumper paint.

      It is simply a paint but with a priming additive. Plastic surfaces are usually rough anyway so there won't be as any issues with adhesion. I was using this stuff on my truck to paint the bumper covers and bed rail covers. It wasn't a full can so I ran out. I was able to finish with the same brand black in satin finish paint. It is all still holding up the same

    my last three vans all had large parts of dark grey plastic trim all around the bodywork, I've always used either black boot polish or carpride back to black type products but after a few trips driving about in the rain it always just wore off and all the trim always looked just as bad as it was before, I found this out by accident recently the last time I cleaned my latest van, I'de ran out of Mr Sheen and boot polish but had a bottle of white spirit and a half bottle of Boiled Linseed oil in the shed so I wiped all the plastic trim down with the white spirit using about half a roll of paper kitchen towel to get rid of all the dirt and tar spots and rubbed it all over with the boiled linseed oil using a microfibre cloth... the best result I've had to date. cost me £2 for the bottle of white spirit and a microfibre cloth from Poundland & £4.80 for the bottle of Boiled Linseed oil from my local Seagers store with still loads left left in the bottle.

    Can you use white instead of black ? Looking to get rid of the old faded plastic look on bumper and color match somewhat

    • @JA-rn5qv
      @JA-rn5qv หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you absolutely can. You need to clean the bumper very well first. I like to use soapy water to start, rinse very well and allow to dry. Then clean it again with isopropyl alcohol or Sprayaway glass cleaner and allow to dry thoroughly, For the white paint you can use Rustoleum 2X Gloss White spray paint. Do 2 or 3 initial light coats, leaving about 10 minutes dry time in between each light coat followed by a final coat which you will go a bit slower so as to allow a little more paint to stick to the surface, just becareful it's not too much to cause the paint to run. It will take several days for the paint to dry well. You can apply a clear coat if you want to but it's not completely necessary for bumpers. Just keep in mind that the Rustoleum Gloss White might not be an exact match for the white color of your car. If you want an exact match for the color of your car then you can order cans of premixed car paint that is matched to the color of your car paint. You will just need the paint code for that which is on a label, usually somewhere in your engine bay or on of the door frames.

    You can use a heat gun on low to bring the oils back to the surface of the plastic, then with 303 to uv protect it so it lasts way longer than rattle canning it.

    • @FABAutomotiveDetailing
      @FABAutomotiveDetailing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nate Wood I have seen videos on heating it up but have heard that it eventually won’t allow you to apply a dressing and looks worse when it comes back. I don’t know how true that is like I said I was told that I have never tried it.

    • @MrRedex88
      @MrRedex88 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried it on my Chevy.
      It did bring it back but it didn't hold up well.
      When I tried a dressing after using the heat gun method the plastic didn't take the dressing anymore so I pretty much runed them.

    • @JA-rn5qv
      @JA-rn5qv หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on where you live but if you want even more resistance to the sun you can finish with a UV resistant top clear coat. I know someone who used this product and finished with several coats of a UV resistant clear coat and it's still good 10 years later, even with regular sun exposure. Even if you don't use the UV resistant clear top coat, you can expect about 3 to 4 years before you can see fading and then you can just srpay the pieces again. But if you want the longest lasting results then go with the UV resistant clear top coat.
