Estrogen deficiency at menopause causes heart disease, Alzheimer's, and osteoporosis. It's not just about the symptoms of menopause, but the diseases caused by menopause that is at issue. Consider HRT.
Consider talking to your dr and not taking recommendations from non dr on the internet like yourself 😂
When she said "consider it". I think she means speaking to your physician. You seem very rude.
@@kristieellis6455 I know, right. My recommendation is not Take HRT. My recommendation is to Consider Taking HRT. You may decide against it. But either way, it warrants research and serious consideration no matter what you ultimately decide. Don't just figure your symptoms are mild and therefore you don't need it. Do your research. Talk to your doc about your specific risk factors. And then make an informed decision.
@@thiccletics Obviously talk to your doc--how else are you gonna get it? Do your research, talk to your doc, consider your specific risk factors, and then decide. Don't just dismiss HRT based on mild symptoms without realizing the serious risks of estrogen deficiency.
Most importantly, talk to an INFORMED doctor about HRT. NOT a doctor still holding on to the WHI grossly and since debunked faulty data.
At 69, I started back on HRT 2 wks.ago. I never should have stopped. My
skin was better after menopause than before & that's just what it did for
my skin ! A heart issue has returned that disappeared while on HRT. I
still have hot flashes too, so there was every reason to continue !
You are one of the few social media creators who doesn't fearmonger about the (very few!) ingredients that can make it past the skin barrier. Facts in the face of fear. Thank you for keeping it real, Dr. Andrea 😊
dealing with skin aging due to declining estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause has been a concern. stumbled upon this video exploring the impact of estrogen on skin health. Aspect Health has guided me through personalized approaches. the discussion on using topical estrogen creams and alternative options like phytoestrogens is informative. understanding the importance of collagen, elastin, and blood vessel formation is crucial. considering these insights for a holistic approach to skincare. always consulting with a doctor is emphasized, ensuring informed decisions about potential health risks. grateful for such content providing clarity on addressing skin aging concerns.
I made it through a hellish menopause without estrogen. But of late I’ve looked into an estrogen creams- Both primary care and gynecologist don’t advise it. They say I’ve made it through the bad part, and I’ve made it to the other side as a healthy post menopausal woman. And I’m grateful, I feel great… I’ll live with my aging skin. But sometimes- I look in the mirror….. and I see an old woman!
I am in the same boat. Haven't taken HRT mainly because it was not recommended due to intraocular bleeding. Sometimes I wonder if it would make my transition easier.
I never did the HRT because it was viewed massively negatively 15 years ago but my skin looks great because I do everything Dr Dray recommends ( diet exercise sunscreen moisturizer and some great inexpensive KBeauty serums etc based on her reviews ) and I do take collagen supplements and I am sure they make a difference
Look up Dr Louise newson, cos HRT is important for more than just symptoms x
I am so sorry that menopause was so difficult for you but I commend you for taking the advice of your physicians. In my family and even with my mom, menopause seemed to be uneventful and I don't know anyone who ever took hormones . It's puzzling how some people have a lot of difficulty and others just Glide right through
Menopause is a whole different animal. I'm 48 and entered it this year. I would say the hot flashes bother me the most. It's a very, uncomfortable, intense heat. 🥵. NO libido is wonderful too. 🤣. So, I take Equate menopausal support. It does not have HRT in it.
I had a radical total hysterectomy before I was perimenopausal due to cervical cancer. At 48, I got topical estrogen. At 51, HRT as my new gyn looked at my risk and bone loss. My skin changed in those years of going from normal estrogen to post-op post-menopausal. Estrogen, if safe for you and risks understood, is amazing for women- skin is fuller, no gyn issues, and I feel like myself again.
Me too. Same surgery for same reason! I am 51 and started on a low dose of an estrogen patch about four months ago. I feel so much better. My oncologist wrote the script for me bc my gynecologist refused.
Apparently she doesn’t read notes from other doctors and started me on paxil instead. It did absolutely nothing. I got off of that. At my last onc appt, I told her what happened. She raged for me and said “I will take care of you and get the script.” I felt so much relief not only at being heard but once that estrogen hit my body.
@@PilatesbyGina Shame on that gyno! 😡
I had to have surgery too. I’d love to know what hormones you’re taking? Thank you!
@@KatieJoMikell The weekly patch is 0.05 mg daily Estradiol. Lowest possible dose. I will likely go up a notch if the doc is ok w that at my 6 month appt w my onc. But it made a big difference for me. ❤️
@@PilatesbyGina Thank you so much!
I haven't watched youtube for a while, so also haven't seen you in a while. It's insane how much work you still put into your videos, awesome. Thanks
Thank you so much for talking about this! It’s so interesting to know about hormone impacts on skin.
Stopped my Chronic UTI’s and overactive bladder immediately.
This is what I started it for. Are you using a cream vaginally? I’m wondering if I can use use a it of that in face as well!!
I now have a life because of estrogen cream. It has also stopped my extremely painful (glass cutting me) bladder/ UTI problems. It's,
A shame my GP never even suggested this since I am in my seventies.

Thanks, Doc!. I can always count on you to bring the facts! 🎉
Thank you! Very informative and measured, as always. Much appreciated.
Your makeup colors are amazing for your complexion. So pretty
Thank you so much for adressing the fact that HRT is not an option for all women. I am 33 years old and went under a full hystorectomy due to estrogen sensitive ovarian cancer, so I cannot take HRT as it is, as you say, absorbed systemically. I really found your video informative in regards to the topical use of estrogen.
I’m glad you’re okay ! God bless you
@@Tamar-sz8ox thank you, but I am not quite there yet. I had two surgeries in October and I am currently in chemotherapy. The fact is that many cancer patients deal with a lot of side effects from their treatment, early menopause and lost fertility is one I have to deal with and other cancer patients have to deal with others. I thought the video gave me some information I could use going forward, when talking to my healthcare providers after I have finished chemotherapy.
Wishing you good health in 2024! I can’t imagine facing all of that (cancer + menopause) at 33 ❤❤
@@Hemmyii thank you. It is tough, but I am fortunate enough to have a lot of people who support and love me around me and I have a good prognosis in terms of survival. I was lucky enough that I could suddenly feel the tumor through my stomach, and went to the doctor before it was too late.

I have to say, I have recently started using Emopelle over the last two months and have noticed a wonderful improvement in my skin. My skin hasn’t looked so smooth and clear in quite some time. I’m also using a rosacea compounding treatment to combat that problem and use a prescription Retinol. Emopelle is expensive, no doubt, but you only need a couple of drops to spread around. I’m very happy using it. They have 20-30 percent off sales throughout the year. I would recommend a try. It took about 6 weeks for me to see visible results. I am 62 yrs. old.
For people who are curious: Emepelle is not an estrogen cream but it does have effective ingredients like retinol, peptides, & niacinamide, & MEP technology that promotes more youthful skin.
Thank you, always great information!🥰
I'm using Estradiol patches, progestin pill and Estradiol cream on vagina and the face. Loving all of it for menopausal symptoms! TBH - the cream has only been perscribed by my doctor for the vulva/vaginal area using a dime size dab 3 times a week. However, I apply the cream daily to vaginal area and face/neck. Just about a tiny pomegranate seed size dab to each of those areas. I'm using it this way, of my own accord, outside of my doctors directions. The benefit has outweighed the risk in my mind for using these hormones. Quality of life is a very important factor. So far, this works quite well for me.
I'm the taking the same However wondering if I could use estrogen cream on my face in addition to the patch. What form of cream are you using on your face ? I greatly appreciate you and your time ❤
How much do you put on your face? I was prescribed estradiol cream, but not for the face. 😉
Are you using your vaginal estrogren cream on your cream? I know that is popular. How do you apply it? How much do you use? Thank you for sharing your experience.
@@user-zd1rb6hn7d I'm using the vaginal Estradiol cream on both my vaginal area and my face. I use a pomegranate seed size applied to each area everyday. I've only been trying this on my face for a short period of time. I saw some products for sale online that had same hormones in them as my cream. It was worth it to give it a try - off label and not strictly as perscribed by my doctor. I figured, IDGAF, so I used my perscription cream instead of buying another product for my face.

Very worthwhile video because this topic impacts women's quality of life and with aging, more susceptible to problems with skin. This topic goes beyond the trends of wanting simply better looking skin.

This is quite interesting Dr Dray and it's good to know that if we're just using retinoids or retinol and sunscreen that it would be just as beneficial as any estrogen cream. You are such a good teacher and speaker. Makes it really easy to comprehend what you are describing. The detail is great as well and you don't seem to miss a beat. You go girl!😊

Dr. Dray ..BTW you are looking fabulous!!! Smart, Nice and beautiful… what a combo !!!
Thank you for the video, trying to navigate through menopause is oftentimes controversial, i appreciate your expertise in the dermatology part of it.
I had to stop my HRT due to a very slow growing breast cancer. I took them for almost ten years. Don’t regret it. They have so many health benefits besides menopause symptoms. My skin is much crepier now.
My mother-in-law had HRT (pills) for years and she found out she had cancer. A different doc told her that he thought the HR pills is what caused the cancer. She had surgery to remove the breast and she is now 6 yrs cancer free.
Thank you for sharing, and I wish the very best with your diagnosis.
Doctor, I am writing a question here because it’s the most recent and I imagine you’re bound to see it. What is your opinion on L’Oreal Revitalift pure retinol 0.3%? hope to hear an answer from you. Thank you so much for all the information you give.
Well done!
If you want the best medical advice regarding HRT and estradiol cream before seeing your gyno, watch Dr. Heather Hirsch and Dr. Marie Haver. Both are specialists in menopause only. That's all they do.
Dr. Dray has taught me alot. I appreciate that. In this case, this video probably needs a caveat. If a young woman is asking the questions this could be interesting. If a woman is in various stages of menopause, this info is a bit behind the curve. I'd recommend reaching out to your OBGYN.
Good morning Dr Dray ❤

Do more on this!
Dr. Dray, will you do a video about Winlevi? Maybe the benefits and outcomes of those who use it
Happy new year! I think you read my mind 😊, thank you for all the info shared!
Happy new year!!
I'm really aggravated that none of my doctors mentioned this when I was going through menopause. Now, several years post menopause I find out why my skin is aging so quickly.
If you are within 10 years of the so-called " window of opportunity" you can still start HRT. Highly recommend Menopause Taylor here on TH-cam. She is a specialist in menopause and a Gynecologist.
You look great, Dr. Dray. Have you disclosed anything about the use of fillers or other cosmetic procedures? I haven't watched your vids in a year or so and you look different (better).
I have had no cosmetic procedures/fillers /botox other than veneers several years ago
I know this would not be condoned but I was given a prescription for vaginal estradiol cream one year ago today, coincidentally. 63 yo thrust surgically into menopause at 38, no estrogen ages 44 through 62. Developed osteoporosis, lost teeth due to bone loss, very dry skin, unwanted facial hair, all kinds of fun stuff. A few months ago after reading material about estrogen I tried using a small pea size amount on my face a few times per week and not applying vaginally, overall using less product per week than previously. Not saying I recommend or condone action without discussing beforehand but I do see significantly more moist, less fragile facial skin. I told my primary care provider at my annual well check aand she didn't tell me to stop.
I have this cream also & thought of using on my face. I will try it but do not use this on your neck because it can affect your thyroid.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
I'm 67 and have deep smokers lines. Have you noticed any darkening of your facial skin since using it on your face? Also wondering if it would help vaginal skin if just used on the face.
@@valerieterry3520it is prescribed for vaginal-vulva health. That’s the primary reason for Rx. If you’re not using it, you should be. Look up Dr. Kelly Casperson on TH-cam, watch her video on vaginal estrogen. This is serious stuff that most of us were never told about. Great-works on facial skin, but your vulva and vagina really need it.
So you’re not using it all vaginally or on vulva? You should be.

Hey Dr Dray :) is topical estrogen for wrinkles safe for males to use? I understand some may be absorbed systemically so I was wondering if you have any good resources/studies for the hormone effects when used on men? Thank you ❤
It has to get into the system from the skin if the patches work in HRT. I use estrogen patches that are prescribed and definitely notice when I apply estrogen cream to my face. I can only use it a couple nights a week or I start getting cramps and hot flashes again. Throws things off balance. But a couple nights a week, definitely has a cumulative effect I like.

Happy Wednesday Dr. Dray, amazing video as always! I was wondering if I used a setting spray over sunscreen to get a dewy look, would it reduce the efficacy of the sunscreen?

With the application of estrogen to the face, obviously estrogen is being absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore why do we hear (little to) no suggestion of progesterone supplementation in order to combat the increased risk of uterine cancer? When my cosmetic doctor advised me to apply Estrogel to my face, my menopause specialist was extremely concerned. (Borderline furious.) She fears that this practise will become widespread and without supervision (and progesterone prescribed and taken in tandem), there will be a significant increase in uterine cancer.
yes, some of the studies did use creams with progesterone
I find it concerning, that apparently hormone creams or pills are available without a prescription at all in the US? That seems like an invitation for trouble. So many people are reckless, when it comes to trying to improve their looks ..

It sure was helpful and interesting to know about the benefits of estrogen cream and general information about the hormone as well. Now of course someone should consider and talk first with their doctor about something like that before their go straight ahead and purchase anything of that sort. Side effects are everywhere😅 and nothing in life comes without side effects. Thanks for the informative video Doctor Andrea 😊❤.
thank you! hope you are having a good week
Can you even get stuff like that without a prescription? I don't think it's available otc, where I live.
@@raraavis7782 emepelle is one option doctor Andrea said but it's quite expensive and not be suitable for everyone (not one size fits all 😅)
@@raraavis7782sort of, there are online sources where you fill out a form with your medical information and photos and one of their doctors ALLEGEDLY reviews your case and a topical prescription cream is compounded for you. I recently got one this way that contains 0.3% estriol and 1% vit C.
Before this I tried topical hormone replacement which was rubbed on my arm. After months, my blood tests showed little improvement in my hormone levels so my body was not being well absorbed. I ended up with an oral hormonal replacement. Waiting on blood test results now. Also got this topical estriol cream for my face. I have very little concern about bad side effects as I already know my body didn’t systemically absorb much. I am not happy with the horrible changes from menopause so it’s worth the risk to me. I only wish I had done this during peri-menopause. Before then my whole life I looked decades younger than my actual age. All that good care was for naught once menopause came it ruined my face, plus other bad effects!
The online compounding pharmacy I used is www.musely.com
As far as I know, it requires a prescription in US, and in Australia where I live. I know as I just tried to book a zoom consultation with a top New Yotk based dermatologist in order to get a prescription for the cream (to use on my face)... but unfortunately she cannot write me a script if I live outside US. Makes sense, but I thought it was worth checking. Turns out the cream (brand name Premarin) is available in Australia, it just has to be sourced from a compounding pharmacy.
Also, I thought it worth mentioning that I found out about the usage of Premarin cream (intended for vaginal dryness) on the face in an interview with with aforementioned derm. She revealed that she'd been using it herself for 20 years (!) ONLY AROUND THE EYE AREA. She also acknowledged it was a favourite with her patients also, whilst also acknowledging, as Dr Andrea does, that there's very limited scientific study for topical use in this way.
What do you think of custom skincare brands like skin and me?
I just use progesterone cream on my face for skin health and to balance out my estrogen dominant. Seems to be helping.
I have not used it on my face but i was prescribed estradiol cream after surgery. I'm not sure if it actually did anything though.
I completely agree with this. I am considering hormone replacement therapy. I was against it, thinking women have been going through menopause for millennia. It’s a completely natural occurrence. I have however been in complete menopause for 6 years. Not withstanding the mood disturbances I have experienced, I feel like I have aged 10 years in the last 4 years and not only do I look old but I also feel as old as I look. Joint pain, shoulder issues, outright exhaustion, etc.
You’re right. That lack of estrogen is also adversely affecting your brain (raising your odds for dementia), affecting your heart, decreasing your bone density which will lead to osteoporosis, and so much more. You should look for Dr. Kelly Casperson for information on estrogen and your overall health as well as your urologic health. The fear mongering over estrogen was due to misinterpreted data from the Women’s Health Initiative. For almost all of us, we need it and the benefits far outweigh the risks.
Sister! You are still in the "window of opportunity" to get started on HRT. Do not delay it. Talk to your GYN and start preventing the diseases of menopause: Heart attacks, Alzheimer's and Osteoporosis.
Highly recommend Menopause Taylor here on TH-cam. She is AMAZING and a specialist on Menopause.
