I met her many years ago when she came to our neighborhood parenting centre when my children were young. I have never forgotten her, she made such an impression on me with her kindness and caring. I think of her often, and try to emulate her spirit in my life and my interactions with the children I care for.
As a former colleague of Mary Gordon for many years, I learned early about her stellar gifts as a classroom instructor. Now I admire her Roots of Empathy project as an indispensable contribution to our society. We are definitely and desperately in need of exactly the kind of emotional literacy that she eloquently advocates in this Ted talk. Congratulations, Mary Gordon, for bringing us all this vital truth. Hi. Nice to meet you. I always have said : Children education is very important, because, tomorrow , they will be who substitute us...In my young life I was a teacher. I used more or less the same principles THAN you. I looked at the wellness of children , in all the sences...It was too much hard for me. I didn't receive support of others . In some towns of my country let only educating using the traditional methods . And I wanted they could recognize we have to change the methods of education : a new method where children enjoy going to school , not only to learn but also sharing with theirs teachers and classmates ; also respecting each other of them. And so for...Excuse me , if I made SOME written english mistakes. English is not my native language... Congratulations.
Empathy is "caught rather than taught." I wish she took the time to explain what that meant instead of leaving it hanging out there. But I applaud her for the Roots of Empathy program.

She means you can't be taught it but caught like a cold. Meaning that being around people who are more empathetic will begin to rub off on you.
