      ***** I agree with you that we can't make sweeping statements on the personality of a population. However cultural norms between countries can be quite obvious sometimes, interestingly. Like for example in the UK people apologize way too much, very courteous. In the US we can hit up a conversation with strangers much easier than in the UK. Stuff like that, not meant to be generalization but merely personal observations.

      You know, its funny, you western guys, the only thing you see on this conflict are the news report and occasional witness reports on the internet. What you see, is just barely the tip of the iceberg.So, PDRC, yellow shirts as you might call them was blocking the polling stations for legit reasons. The parties that are involved in the elections, are paid off by the Shinawatra Patrt (Pheu Thai Party), so that when there are more parties in contention, small almost unknown parties, the Pheu Thai Party needs a smaller percentage of the vote to get into office. Now, lets discuss the proof of the rigged elections, Thaksin's former party, Thai Rak Thai got shut down because of vote buying charges. Thaksin and his sister, Yingluck are face with corruption charges, one is a fugitive while the other denies and overrule the court's decision. A election is not always the meaning of democracy. how are we going to have a free democratic country if even are elections are not democratic?

    • @jaredspencer3304
      @jaredspencer3304 10 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      It's a difficult concept for most Westerners. He's not "just" a person, he's a great person, at least to the Thais. This monarch in particular, the 9th in this dynasty, has done so much to alleviate poverty and raise living standards. And he didn't have to do this; he could have just chilled as a playboy his entire life. But he chose to help with agricultural programs, school programs, vocational training, etc. And he paid for all this from the Royal Treasury. To Thai people, he's a benevolent, selfless person. There's also his semi-divinity, supported by Buddhism. But at the heart of it, most Thais love him not because he's a demigod, but because he's a really good person.

    • @MixMeAdrink
      @MixMeAdrink 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Jared Spencer so If Bill Gates were to move to Thailand, will Thai people honor him like a king as well? What you said is irrelevant because we live in the 21st century and monarch has no power other than what the people allow the monarch to have. If the Thai king didn't do good things for his people, they'll just kick him out and that will be the end of Thai's monarchy. You said he's selfless yet he's the richest monarch in the world. Why is it that the richest monarch reside in a country that is not even considered a developed country? Shouldn't he be giving away his wealth to help the poor, which Thailand has a lot.

    • @Norwayscs
      @Norwayscs 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      k The start of your comment is really irrelevant. There is a huge difference between being rich and being a monarch. The monarchy is more like special representetives of a country.

    • @MixMeAdrink
      @MixMeAdrink 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Norways I was putting forth an example that was a response to the previous commenter's comment. Thai people does not need a monarch to represent them abroad. No country does. Monarch are nothing more than a waste of taxpayer resources.

    Dear Vice!
    I'm an expat living in Bangkok, and the things aren't as bad as you're showing it. Yes, there are protests, and unfortunately, there is blood here and there. BUT - it's very rare and not as big as you show it in this clip.
    Most of the unrest is happening in Bangkok which has more than 12 million people living in it. Out of those 12 million, only 1.5% are involved in the protest, and that number is even lower if you ask me.
    Thailand is NOT on the brink of the civil war, it's media that's hyping things too much and creating even more tension.
    Flak jackets ? In Thailand? Are you kidding me ? Vice, what's happening with you guys...

    • @pixelpro513
      @pixelpro513 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dude - I live here too and if you go near any protest site a flak jacket is a smart idea. I wouldn't advise going anywhere near any protest site. If Yingluck is impeached it will get more violent. Civil War? You never know as the parties are very far apart. Vice did a great job.

    • @nikolalesar9943
      @nikolalesar9943 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PixelPro I passed by a few protest sites, and they weren't pretty, but it's nothing compared to Ukraine. It takes more than a few idiots with ww2 guns and molotovs to start a war mate. Thailand and Bangkok in general - are safe. It's been like this for ages... I do agree, things heated up this and previous year - but it's still not as bad as they show it.
      It's a deeper story that doesn't fit into 30 mins of VICE news, and this reporter did a bad job if you ask me... Both sides were interviewed, Yellow and Red...
      What about the 3rd side ? The common and normal people that don't participate in the protests ? Where's their story ?
      Don't get me wrong... I love Vice and their stories, but this one is only superficial...
      And that title ? "Bangkok Rising - Is Thailand on the brink of the civil war" ?
      Answer is VERY simple - No, it's not!

  • @Ex0dia5

    I grew up in Bangkok from 96-09, my father still lives there, and I'm planning on going back this summer. Back in 2006 in my High School days in Bangkok I was assigned to do a large report (20% of my grade for this class) on the political situation in Thailand specifically Thaksin and the allegations (Now official charges) of corruption, tax evasion, and conflict of interest for himself and his family in multiple deals spanning from his wife buying land at reduced prices to the sale of his Telecommunications company tax free all while he was PM of Thailand. Along with some controversial Health Care/Education/War on Drugs policies.
    This caused Thaksin to be ousted in a Bloodless Military Coup all while I was writing the report. Having lived in Thailand during Thaksin entire time as PM and studying and witnessing the roots of the current political situation in Thailand I believe I can say with confidence that I have a unique perspective on the current situation in Thailand.
    But all I really want to say is that I see a lot of people seem to take a black or white approach in viewing the current political situation. The current situation is a lot murkier than you think it is, and without a clear understanding of Thai politics in history you shouldn't pass judgement. Even I don't understand the situation thoroughly having studied it. Even some Thai people themselves don't understand the situation properly either and to a certain degree are being manipulated by their politicians because of that. What I do know is that both sides have made bad decisions and mistakes over the last 10+ years that have just made the situation spiral out of control. Both sides are quick to demonize and label everyone with the same brush. Both need to grow up stop fighting and come to a peaceful conclusion for the good of the country. All of this political turmoil has hurt Thailand's economy and weakened the country as a whole. The people of Thailand are currently divided politically by hatred and desire for justice in the face of rampant corruption which has been the norm in Thailand for decades. But what the people of Thailand need is to come together with a certain amount of respect for each other as countryman. They need to show empathy and forgiveness for each other. Only then can Thailand move forward.
    On a side note when the video starts at 20:33 they go to Laksi. This specfic area of Laksi is at the end Chaeng Wattana Road (Sign at 22:00). Which is less than 10 minutes away from my house in Bangkok where my father still lives. They beat up the care and have a firefight at/near the intersection right in front of a small shopping mall called IT Square. This is where I used to buy a lot of my electronics. Its really weird seeing a street where I've walked/driven now in a full blown firefight in a video on VICE.

In Thailand, the vote of the majority is nullified when the sino-thai upper middle class and the military decide it's time for a coup. The comparison is illustrative of structural problems in Thai politics, it's not necessarily intended to be taken too literally.

    I am Thai and I am a yellow shirt. If you people have seen what our King has done for the country, you would understand why we love our King so much. He has done EVERYTHING for the country, from treating droughts to floods with his ingenious projects. He is the most selfless person who WALKED all across the country (literally) to see his people, even those from the lowest class. Of course we want democracy and of course we want to better our country. But if corruption is what you call a democracy, then you are an uncivilized, self-centered individual. The Sinawatra family claims to have come from democracy, but in reality, they PAID all the low class people to vote for them. You guys have to realize that Thailand is a third world country, our education system or living condition is not the best. When people with little to nothing see money, what do they do? They take it of course, what else are they supposed to do? They need to support themselves and their family. This claimed "democracy" is a true definition of corruption. This family has caused Thailand billions of dollars, for their own selfish needs. Heck, they even tried to sell the country to foreigners.. Thailand is not supposed to be a land where anyone can come and shit on and just simply take for granted. This land is for THAI people. Foreign currencies are much higher than Thailand's, so they can easily just buy any land they want. Whereas for Thais, we don't have the ability to do that because again, we are a third world country. If you guys really open your eyes, you would see why we put up so much resistance for our King. Why would we fight for something we don't love? He is the father of our country, and we can't stand it if some bastard dares to disrespect him. Please don't be fooled by their mask of "democracy".

    • @ToThoo
      @ToThoo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Rj Jaroenp That's because most Thai politicians in history and at present are corrupted.
      Even the anti-thaksin protest leader, Suthep Thuagsuban, is a notoriously corrupted politician.
      Even a military-installed PM who came into power after a coup that ousted Thaksin, and was a privy councillor with close ties to the palace had his own scandal revealed for building a private house in a National Park.
      Sounds absurd isn't it?
      Welcome to Thai politics.
      What keeps people voting for Thaksin was that he is the first corrupted PM who executed policies during his tenure which truly benefited the rural poors such as universal health care, SME micro-loans for every vilages, leapfrog minimum wage raise, while his opponents wanted to keep the poors poor to preserve the status of Bangkok elites and businessmen as those rural people are cheap source of labor powering Thai industrial and agricultural sector for decades.

    • @scary00001
      @scary00001 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesnt that sound as though the thais are allowing corruption then? There's the unwritten rule that if you don't get caught then you havent done anything wrong.. So by accepting someone who corrupts will that not be the equivalent of saying "we allow you to corrupt as long as you do you job". Would you not say that Taksin intentionally aimed to support the lower class that makes up 70% of thais to get support? and can every government not do the same as he did ?

    • @ToThoo
      @ToThoo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rj Jaroenp I totally agree that to solve Thai corruption problem, "all corrupt politicians" should be held accountable.
      The problem at the moment are:
      1) Thaksin was already sentenced jail term, but he fled the country to avoid it with his argument that the case was politically motivated and influenced by his opponents as a result of the military coup. The red shits sympathize with this, as they themselves are against undemocratic system which ripped off their voting rights and against any unfair treatment especially when it come to justice. Whether the case was fairly trialed or not is controversial and highly debatable.
      2) The red shirts keeps voting for Thaksin's nominees which one used to be an old royalist politician, and the current PM is his sister. All of his nominees are free from corruption convictions during the election. Otherwise, they would not be allowed to compete in the first place. The argument is whether Thaksin's people should be allowed to participate in an election while they all have the rights to do so, or should anyone who is affiliated with Thaksin should be stripped of their political rights.
      3) Corruption cases against Thaksin's opponent has not progressed while any case related to Thaksin's people is fast tracked. None of corruption cases of military-installed government has progressed to court, while those cases for Thaksin's sister current government is going at an insane speed with aims to bring down this government by justice system that is stuffed with Thaksin's opponents.
      To truly solve the problem, not only corruption should not be tolerated, but the justice system should be free from politics, and overthrow of corrupt government by undemocratic means such as military or judicial coup must also not be tolerated as well.

    • @scary00001
      @scary00001 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see but I thought his sister wanted to bring him back into Thailand void of any crime? I mean if this is true then don't you think it is supporting corruption? i.e. by suggesting that you can get away with the crime.

    Thailand is diverse. The way to change that is not by giving poor people some money but to develop the country. Education is the key. Voting is the best tool for democracy only if the majority of the people are educated.
    Taksin made our economy rise but if you look carefully poor people bacame poorer and the rich became richer (like china). I hate Taksin because He takes advantage of the poor making them think he is helping them. Giving them things that make sense to them (money in hand) but not for the long run. He never ever encourages education. NEVER! What are poor people going to do with a little more money and less education? They won't be able to decide weather education is better if they don't have any.
    Don't believe everything on the internet including my opinion but I truly am only fighting for these red shirt farmers that don't have any idea what's about to come their way if Taksin keeps ruling the country. I have the choice not to live in thailand if it gets real bad but what choices have the poor ? If it ever gets to that point, the farmers will be so screwed. Its hard enough for them to get out of poverty now. I just don't want it to be impossible for them.
