So I believe they should be given their independence and in turn, Indonesia and Malaysia should also give the non-Muslim communities their independence because being a minority in a Muslim State is also horrifying. In between in year 1786 it was conquest by Siam (Thai) and the last Sultanate was deposed in 1902. In year 1909 The Bangkok Treaty (Anglo-Siamese) has separated Malay Kingdom 5 provinces remained under Siam (Thai) and 4 Malay states (Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Terengganu) in Malay Peninsular under British administrative until gained independence year 1957. Malay provinces in southern Thailand considered still under occupation of Thailand and Malays/Muslims forced to be assimilated with Siamese cultures and language.

They also develop tourism mostly in the south and most of them not respect sensitivity of majority Muslims beliefs/cultures who are native to the land. I'm a Singaporean and iv been living in Yala South Thailand for about 7 years and the conflict is not as bad as you think it only occurs once in a while but what I wanna say is that the Malay are Native to the five southern most province in Thailand its their Homeland which was seperated thanks to none other then the British who are mostly the main source of conflict worldwide iv been living amongst the Malays and the Thai Muslim and they don't hv a problem at all the only problem is that the Thai government is trying to Ethnicly wipe them of their identity culture and language there's a whole Wikipedia page dedicated to it, I myself have experience first hand in the inequality disrespect and insults that the Thais say to the Malays sometimes when they can't speak thai well enough in the officials rub it in their faces reminding them that they are a people defeated so accept the defeat and speak thai which is commonly made by high ranking officials or doctors "probably corrupted one" it is because of these people that makes the majority of the Malays feel disrespected and the desire for their freedom and atleast or if not the majority of the malay people have experienced this atleast once in their lifetime this is why the Thais and the Malays don't get along and live in separate villages or neighbourhood and I can say this because I have lived with these people for 7 years so to them this is a big problem because Islam and the Malay culture is deeply intertwined you can't seperate Islam from the Malay culture and these people hv a rich history of Islamic Knowledge and they are proud of it so by trying to erase the language and culture and forcefully assimilating them into the Thai custom is an insult to them and their religion and making them feel less equal and respected and less muslim, this is quite true and you can see the effect it has made in the neighbouring province of Satun (Google it), the Malays hv tried couple of times in the past to establish an autonomous state down south but after nine attempts by the malays the Thai government tried to end the petition by using violence and assassinat one of their leaders (haji sulong) this resulted in the malays taking up arms and fighting back for their rights over a land which was taken by the Thais over 300 years ago the Thais could hv ended this conflict 60 years ago but Thailand wasn't keen on giving up 4 provinces and wanted full control over them and the people so in summary I would say Thailand was the one who caused all this, for example there are around 20000 Thais who are not native to Malaysia living in Malaysia but there is no conflict between them and the Malays because Malaysia understands peace and Respect them for who they are and allowed them to maintain their cultural identity traditions and language, so there was no reason for them to be upset with the Malaysian government same goes to Singapore but for Thailand on the other hand did the exact opposite, I'm not sure if this conflict will ever end but I can assure you that the situation is not as bad as it sounds, skirmishes rarely happens and the local Thais aren't even that disrespectful towards the malays it's mostly the officials who are so if peace was to prevail the Thai government would have to respect all races and not try to impose the Thai customs on other people

If I remember right, Thailand's southern violence was not originally an Islamic militancy by nature, as Thailand has a great degree of religious tolerance (even as far as the old Ayutthaya Kingdom, Muslims worked in the Buddhist Thai government with no problem). In fact there are even a lot of mosques in Thailand sponsored by the Buddhist government, many are found in the north (Chin Haw and Thaified Arab-Persian community) and many Thai Muslims did attend Buddhist schools to get monkhood experience.
Weird to see how this violence transcended into a growing jihadist network like now.

When Phibul Songram was Prime Minister of Thailand, he passed laws to restrict freedom and economic dominance by the Chinese. Chinese schools and Chinese newspapers were dissolved.
On the other hand, Plaek Phibunsongkhram set in motion of a process of Thaification which had as its objective the cultural assimilation of the Malay Patani people, among other ethnic groups in Thailand.
By 1944, Thai civil law was enforced throughout the land including the Patani region, over-riding earlier concessions to local Islamic administrative practices. The school curriculum was revised to be Thai-centric, with all lessons in the Thai language, to the detriment of the local Jawi.
Traditional Muslim courts that formerly handled civil cases were removed and replaced with civil courts run and approved by the central government in Bangkok. This forced assimilation process and the perceived imposition of Thai-Buddhist cultural practices upon their society were irritants to the ethnic Malay Patani.

00:08:18 This is a good summary of the conflict
    ...
"Regardless of your religions and your skin colors, if you speak Thai and you behave like Thais, you are Thai"
    ...
Thailand was created based on so-called "Thai values" which refer to 1) Central-Thai language 2) Thai cultures. As we all know Thailand does not pursue multiculturalism but instead prefer a "culture-based homogeneous society". In Thailand, we have Thai-Siamese, -Laos, -Khmere, -Chinese, -Mon, -Vietnamese people, nowadays all these people identify themselves simply as "Thai", we don't have a distinction between different races, for example, Thai-Chinese, Thai-Laos, etc don't see their Chinese, Laos, etc heritages as identities but they see them as decorations, added values or something to be appreciated. In daily life, we don't live in separated communities unlike in Malaysia or Singapore.
    ...
"There is relatively no racial conflict in Thailand"
    ...
Thaification (Thailand's assimilation process) indeed killed some non-Siamese cultures but also adopted/absorb many non-Siamese cultures into the Thai culture, and most importantly, it get rid of one of the most challenging problems of humankind, namely "a racial conflict". To kill some cultures but to save several million lives from being killed from racial conflict, isn't it worth it? Cultures can be revived and recovered but people lives cannot be resurrected.
    ...
What I have just described two paragraphs above and what has been explained at 00:08:18 are totally different in ideologies, and that is "the root of the conflict". It is a choice between "Being Thai who is living in Thailand and being proud of Melayu heritage" vs "Being Melayu who is living in Patani State and being proud of Melayu heritage".

Fighting for independence for their land!
Because it belong to them not Thai people. Malay kingdom already exist in 1st century (Kedah & Langkasuka) way before Thai came to Malay peninsula.
It’s not about religion. South Thai people (Malay-pattani) want independence from Thai government. They already fight for independence for long time for their native land to free from Thailand & British. Cause that Land didn’t belong to Thai migrants in the 1st place. Thai steal south thai natives (malay) land with British help. This situation is same as southern philippine but it between British & Spain.
They are Malay pattani and southern thai is their native land. Thai people should moved to north Thai instead of them move to Malaysia
