  • Over the past weeks and months, Iran has descended into chaos. From the downing of a passenger jet to the assassination of a top general, and now one of the world's largest coronavirus outbreaks, life in the Islamic Republic is facing its toughest challenges since it was founded in 1979.
    Just days before all hell broke loose, VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to the country, meeting people from all walks of life: from hipsters to hostage-takers, and from top lawmakers to one of Iran's heaviest metal bands.

      The maritime businesses are struggling in iran, that is true. But you have to understand how these situations came to be. Many of these yacht building facilities and companies were financing irgc's navy in pursuit of engineering subs. This poor man may be one of hundreds hit by the sanctions, and there are more for sure. As a person who have had the unfortunate fate of being conceived in this god forsaken land i find myself responsible to clear some of this haze around the actual situation in iran.

Imagine you’re trying to make an honest living and the government makes it impossible by being a menace then not being able to do anything about it due to living in an autocratic dictatorship. The rich who live in Iran can easily get around sanctions, they have nothing to worry about while the common people have nothing.

I am no expert, no geopolitician, but it did ALWAYS strike me how America pursues Israel's interests without the two country having any real cultural/political/economical reason for proximity. And yet EVERY single Us president has always stated his uncompromising support to the jewish state. Why? Have you asked yourself that? @Boston 508617 dude, in turkey, we live mostly under liberal, secular laws and turkish women have much more rights than iranian women. as in your first comment, we have much more rights than western people believe. i know what you are coming from because your pride hurts when some ignorant westerners comment on your country, that's why you activated your "heyy we are not like you guys think of us we are not like completely opressed ok" mood. sometimes i feel this too. but for example, when we talk about women's rights in turkey, nobody says BUT WOMEN HAVE MUCH MORE FREEDOM THAN PEOPLE THINK OF US, WELL WE HAVE EDUCATION, GOVERNMENT POSITONS etc etc. your comment is like a justification propaganda and you dont get it. those rights you mentioned is just a tokenism that iranian government uses to dodge the real women question in iran.

      @@delowarhossain70 It's a Persian saying the guy slightly mistranslated. The original translates to "The yellow dog is the jackal's brother." Which refers to a situation where even though one of a number of bad options is less bad, it will still effectively be as bad as the rest. Here, the man was implying that since the reporter is from a US media organization, he is probably the same as the rest of them.
      There is a chance that he used this specific saying to refer to the situation due to a confusion in the scene where someone said the reporter is from "Voice" of America (VOA - US State Department owned media organization) and someone else corrected them and said it's "Vice", from America. In this scenario, the jackal refers to VOA.

      The US supported the shah, supported Saddam's war against Iran, unilaterally broke off the nuclear treaty, and placed crippling sanctions including on humanitarian goods, and then has the gall to claim it's the other side who should make amends. That the US chastises Iran for funding terrorist groups and shipping arms to fuel conflict is also ironic considering that the US has been funding and arming terrorist groups like the Mujahideen, various Syrian terrorist organisations and Saudi Arabia's genocidal war on Yemen (not to mention groups in other parts of the world, like the contras). The US is a nation whose leadership is seemingly incapable of introspection.

    • @kurousagi8155
      @kurousagi8155 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Jesper you’re missing some context.
      The USA supported the Shah because Mossadegh was attempting to steal oil producing equipment from US and UK companies. It’s one thing to expel the oil companies and pay them off for their equipment. It’s another to simply steal what isn’t yours.
      The Iran nuclear deal was a joke negotiated in bad faith by Iran. The Iranians continued nuclear weapons development by advancing their ballistic missile program.
      The sanctions omit humanitarian aid. The USA has been very clear that humanitarian aid is exempt from US sanctions so long as the provider performs oversight on spending.
      The USA only “supported” two groups you mentioned. The USA supported part of the Mujahideen, specifically the Northern Alliance. Which is not noted as a terrorist organization anywhere. Additionally, the USA’s “support” to Saudi Arabia has been mostly weapon sales. Notice the word sales. This support is a business transaction.

    • @user-kb8rc5vq2i
      @user-kb8rc5vq2i 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      @@kurousagi8155 "Theft of equipment" is not a valid excuse for toppling a democratically elected government and replacing it with an oppressive, torturous dictator.
      And Iran was in full compliance with the agreement as per *every single report* made by the IAEA, equating ballistic missile development with developing a nuke is a half-assed excuse.
      And US Sanctions still harm medical supplies. www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/as-coronavirus-cases-explode-in-iran-us-sanctions-hinder-its-access-to-drugs-and-medical-equipment/2020/03/28/0656a196-6aba-11ea-b199-3a9799c54512_story.html It doesn't matter what exceptions you put in place when you utterly destroy a countries ability to pay for the supplies needed.
      You are also ignoring the intelligence and "training" provided to the Saudi coalition, and acting like you're only marginally involved when you literally sell them the bombs the use to drop on school busses is laughable.
      Also, the US did support the Contras, they even sold Iran missiles to do it.
