  • Here's my 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE. I'm performing some tests to see how the rear electric motor(MGR) performs in off road conditions. The configuration of the RAV4's AWD system is both its strength and its weakness. The rear wheels are 100% electric but the motor only has 54 horsepower and 89 lb ft of torque. Off road the rear motor is the vehicle's Achilles Heel. Let's see how it performs.
    Location: Ocotillo Wells, California
    Wheels: Black Rhino Barstow 17x8
    Tires: BF Goodrich All-Terrain 245/65/17(31 PSI)

    I think its a great video. No music and no commentary, just how the car actually performs on dirt. I don't think i'm ever going to really run off road to any great extent, but now I can have an idea how it might handle in a pinch.

    Thanks for showing us these tests. I have one comment though about the test at about the 2:27 mark. It seems to me you are trying to "Crawl" up a steep dirt hill. And while I appreciate being able to see how well that works. I have to say I am not surprised by the amount of wheel spin and backsliding. It is after all, not a crawler in a true sense, it has (even in this case) relatively narrow wheels and a fairly short wheel base, and relatively low ground clearance and articulation. If I encountered a similar hill with my Rav in the wild, I imagine I would take it on with a bit of a run up and use my momentum to help rather than try to "crawl" it.
    It's also important to consider how this transmission works. The Hybrid uses a transaxle which has NO changing gears, no pulleys no belts. It is a "CVT" in function but not in form. Rather than use adjustable cone pulleys, belts and chains, or meshing different gear sets this transaxle uses two electric motors to assist the engine across the RPM range. 1 Motor is engaged to provide power by adding it's torque to the final output. The other motor is mated in opposition to the input shaft from the engine, by a planetary gear set and depending on the situation either spins with the motor, idles in place or spins backwards against the motor (all at varying speeds and torques to produce a smooth power band) to change the output of the planetary system based on what's going on with that sun gear vs planet gears vs anulus(or carrier) gear. (This is also why the engine cannot be used to go in reverse, there is no way to change to a reverse gear, so the engine is disconnected and the motors spin backwards to give you reverse)
    What that all means is there is no "real" low range capability of the transaxle, only as much torque multiplication as the smaller motor scan generate by running the planetary gears in concert with the engine to produce an "under drive" effect.
    For that reason I would generally not bother trying to crawl anything with these systems anymore than I would bomb through rough terrain at 50 mph. A nice steady pace, giving the computer time to adjust the motors to produce gearing effects, is typically going to best serve the Rav4 Hybrid/prime offroad in my opinion.

    • @benweber31
      @benweber31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      With the bigger tires I get about a half inch increase in ride height. So basically, nothing you would notice. Your hitch will still scrape in certain situations. I drag the exhaust pipes from time to time. Those are the lowest point for scraping the ground. Also the front bumper is pretty long and low. You definitely need to be careful when going over big bumps. Going at an angle is the best way to avoid scraping. I've considered chopping off the tail pipes to be more flush with the vehicle. This would be an effort to increase departure angle. But for now I'll just scrape them up. Let's people know I take it off road :)

    In a lot of these clips as soon as wheel slip occurs you let off the throttle. I find that if you stay on it the traction control will solve those problems. This is coming from my experience in a FWD 2019 tho so might be different with AWD. Hell when I go up to my dirt hill trail I lose all speed from it being rutted and it being decently steep, I keep my foot to the bottom of the pedal and it finds a way(it won't rev the engine super high since traction control is deciding what to do).

    • @benweber31
      @benweber31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh yes I totally agree. In this test, I was trying to create traction problems. This was to show how the rear electric motor(MGR) would engage in slippery situations. When I'm actually trying to get up the hill, I definitely stay on the throttle. Like you said, the traction control will figure it out. Which is pretty impressive. I've found that there's a big difference between normal mode and trail mode. I've been totally stuck with the throttle fully pressed with normal mode. All I do is enable trail mode and the traction control stops the wheel spin and the vehicle moves forward. This is especially true on diagonal slopes where one front wheel and one rear wheel lose traction.

  • @joemysterio
    @joemysterio ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm guessing this was with the stock suspension that's 'sport' tuned? Or is that just the 2022 XSE Hybrid? If yours does have this same suspension, how was the ride quality while off road?

    • @benweber31
      @benweber31  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's stock sport suspension. I actually prefer the stiffer ride off road. It's a little more bumpy over the little bumps. But there's less chance of bottoming out with the big bumps, which I like. Plus if you want to drive a little more sporty, it feels great. Even with the big heavy tires, it's pretty fun in the corners.
      There does seem to be some sagging in the rear suspension. I've read that is normal over time. I've driven long distances with the weight maxed out so that probably didn't help. I plan to replaced the rear springs at some point. But with 86k miles so far, I'm not complaining.

    Cool test! I almost wonder if a software update could remap the electric motors about and help to align power more effectively.

    • @benweber31
      @benweber31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I totally agree. I think Toyota plays it safe since the motors are connected directly to the wheels through reduction gears. There's no torque converter to act as a buffer between the motor and wheels. Also let's say the a software update would allow the front motor to shut off completely to allow rear wheels to have traction, the rear motor definitely doesn't have enough power to move the vehicle up a hill on its own. I do think there's more potential though. I never ran into an issue of low power, just traction. I'm actually using very little throttle to get up the hill going forward. The eCVT is very good at picking the correct "gear". However in reverse, I was foot to the floor. As you can see, much less power in reverse. A lot of these issue should be resolved with the RAV4 PRIME. Since it has a much larger and more capable battery, the electric motors simply have more power.

    • @freedom_foz_6337
      @freedom_foz_6337 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@benweber31 very true that’s why Toyotas last a long time. Most JDM companies limit the full potential to reduce damage. Similar with Subarus check out my hill climb attempt granted I probably could have done it... I didn’t want to slide into the bank. Subscribed man! I bet though if they could engage the motors differently with a remap you could get better traction, tires and psi also make a huge difference too. th-cam.com/video/hHlJsCzAtLo/w-d-xo.html

    • @benweber31
      @benweber31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used trail mode for most of the video. Turning traction control off gets you stuck really fast. The all wheel drive system can't really mechanically move power around. The system relies heavily on traction control to control wheel slip. Trail mode allows the wheels to spin more than normal, but also stops excessive wheel spin to send power to the wheels with traction. This really works. In situations where I've got 2 wheels off the ground diagonally, you totally get stuck in normal mode. Foot to the floor, wheels spinning, no forward movement. Press the trail mode button and it's sort of like locking the differentials...sort of. Now the brakes will more aggressively stop wheel spin and the vehicle moves forward. Pretty cool. Although I'd just rather have a real locking differential. :)

The vehicle has much less power in reverse. That section of the hill was very sandy. I liked it because I could get the wheels to spin easily. Right next to that spot is where I went up normally. It's at 4:18. I could have very easily gone over the hill. It's not very exciting, so I wanted more wheels slip. But as an example, that's what it looks like if you actually try to get up the hill.

      There aren't many situations that I know of where it is advantageous to turn off VSC and TRAC. I only turn them off in deep sand or snow. In modern 4x4s, they seem to do quite well at stopping wheel spin. Almost as well as locking differentials in some cases. This is not the case with the RAV4 Hybrid. The traction control WILL NOT completely stop and hold a spinning wheel. I suspect this is to prevent damage.

      Speed is key when on rocky sandy stuff like this. Even a 4x4 with lockers will just dig holes until you are stuck. My quad is 2WD and I go up the same hill all the time, but with speed. This was to test the unconventional REAR ELECTRIC MOTOR in the RAV4 Hybrid.

  • @shitvalancheofdivercity14-.-88
    @shitvalancheofdivercity14-.-88 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Reverse does not use electric motors only. All the weight shifts to the front end when backing up a hill which allows the electric rear motor to spin the wheels easier and we all know the CVT trans can't spin front wheel drive wheels in reverse. Get a clue.

    • @benweber31
      @benweber31  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The transmission doesn't have a reverse gear. The vehicle can only go backwards via the 2 electric motors. These are MG2 and MGR. The gas engine only acts as a generator when the vehicle is in reverse. The gas engine cannot turn the wheels in reverse, ever. This is fully explained in this video:

    in case "electric motors only" this car use always electric motor only :) there is no any direct conect between gas engine and wheels .

    • @benweber31
      @benweber31  ปีที่แล้ว

      In forward motion with the gas engine running, MG1 regulates the ratio of the transmission. If MG1 is completely stopped, the ratio is 1:1. This happens at about 60 MPH. The engine power goes directly through the the transmission to the front wheels. Only in reverse and EV mode is the vehicle only moved with electric motors only(MG2 and MGR). Sometimes the vehicle will be in a sort of EV mode with the gas engine running as a generator. This happens at slow speeds only. Here's a great video to explain the very cool T710 transmission:
