      I don't know to be impressed or upset with myself that i understand every reference and the conversation the two people above me just had. I always feel bad that the other captain had to die. The one thing that never made sense to me is, a universal translating device would totally be able to figure out a language like that even without understanding the references... No offence i love picard as much as the next trekky but Data would have been a better choice than picard as far as actually figuring out the language, because with ONE reference he can could translate the entirety of everything every recorded by any starfleet vessel not JUST what was heard on the planets surface

    • @forgefathereli8354
      @forgefathereli8354 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And yes i know they didn't "get to choose" they just beamed picard and the other captain down and put up the "no transportation" scatterfield (plot device so they cant use the transporters)

    The best part about Picard is he's the best and is everything you want to be but he doesn't seem perfect. He isn't some Marty Sue who never makes mistakes but he does what he can to stand by his principles and you see the issues that it causes. He doesn't believe in bending the rules when it comes to some things but in others he's willing to ignore all those around him to do what he feels is right. It truly does make him the best Captain.

      It is really his will to dominate his own shortcomings and make himself a better man that make me think he's far superior to Kirk. Kirk is only a guy driven by his passions eventhough he is capable of intellectual reasoning when time demands it. But he doesnt really change his behavior. Picards leanrs from his mistakes and moves on. Kirk is the teenager fantasy whereas Picard is the figure we all want to become as adults. And I personally agree with Wesley here, he would have made a good father, at least he is a good father figure.

    Picard's absolute best moment was in TNG season 4, episode 2, "Families" - going home to his family vineyard in France that had been inherited by his resentful older brother, provoking his brother into a fight, rolling around in the mud, breaking down in tears, all to reconnect with his humanity and come to terms with the trauma he'd experienced at the hands of the Borg. In a franchise that tries to distance itself from the dark side of humanity, it's an uncomfortably honest look at PTSD and the horrors of war.

    Jarok the only known Romulan with self determination and compassion to become a traitor to prevent potential needless deaths and to save his daughter from an unwanted war that would benefit no one. The only Romulan that showed honor,compassion and the willingness for putting oneself out there to save his people.

    Another great and glorious video by the Templin Institute one small recommendation when doing videos about people especially ones with a military (starfleet is not a Military I know) backgrounds make a note of any confirmed medals or honours they may have especially rare one as it's part of their history it adds a sense of what the person has earned but its just a thought.
    love the videos keep up the great work

    Just me over here getting choked up by the biography of a fictional spaceship captain. Even if it turns out aliens don't exist, or warp drive is impossible, Star Trek is a vision of a hopeful future that we could absolutely have, and that we should be moving towards. Captain Picard is like the embodiment of what the Federation means as a whole, and is thus deeply aspirational.
