I know this is a 2 year old post, but FreeSpace (and old space sim) also has a really good story surrounding humanity's survival. Humanity is basically been in a 14 long war that has amounted to a stalemate with an alien species known as the Vasudans until an alien race known as the Shivans invade known space in a similar manner to the Reapers (of course FreeSpace came before Mass Effect, so maybe Mass Effect was inspired by FreeSpace). The Shivans are basically hell bent on destroying humanity, the Vasudans and basically all other life in the galaxy, but what makes the game really scary is how no matter what you do, it feels almost impossible to stop the Shivans as they start rampaging through system after system "glassing" planets as they go. Every victory you have against them is almost immediately null and void when the debriefing covers the Shivan's latest massacre. It has this effect on the player in feeling like they are fighting a losing war no matter how many victories they have.

Isaac Arthur done an episode a few days ago about planetary invasions and how in real life they wouldn't really happen much because if you really wanted to go to war with a planet you could really just kill everyone from space, yet the Covenant give the perfect reason why an alien (or human) force might actually choose to invade a planet: religious/ideological reasons.

Actuuuually😅 Hell yes! I was dumbstruck by the sheer engineering, manpower or Forerunnerpower, and scientific know-how that it took to make such a massive artificial ring, while still having active tectonics (or what seem like it) and artificial weather patterns that are very very close to real ones!
"But these are my elites, their lives matter to me yours does not." "That makes two of us." "Mmhh.." The original trilogy has so many quotable moments it's insane. Bungies writing was top tier back in the day.
You know for so long I thought that was the Arbiter saying the commander's life meant nothing to him I never realised until recently that it was the Arbiter talking about how he didnt care for his own life

Elite: "He ripped off their heads." Truth: "HOW?!" Elite: "I'm not sure but-Oh shit....." Doom Slayer: "I'm getting sick and tired of these fucking attempted invasions on Earth."
The Doomslayer and Master Chief fighting the covenant back to back on an alien planet while a massive battle takes place around them Now that would be the ultimate crossover.
@@blam320 Both of them would have to have unique playstyles. Doomslayer, I think, should be more melee oriented and have more explosive weapons. Master Chief should be mid to long range, then, with pulse weapons and rifles. All in all, it'd make a great co-op mode.
I wouldn't say dominate, the human race was nearly exterminated. It will take decades, if not centuries to return back to the amount of power the UNSC had at the beginning of the conflict. If anything, the Sangheili are probably the strongest remaining race, given their alliance with humanity. None of their worlds were actually destroyed.
Gustav Kuriga Only about half of Humanity was lost and there are a few hundreds colonies that survive. The Sangheili are actually in a dire state after the fall of the covenant, they was so caught up with the military area that they struggle with the parts the Prophets took care of and start a civil war. Only Arbiter group sided with humanity and many elites in his group only tolerate humans for Arbiter and his ancient family position in Sangheili society. Arbiter is very progressive among Sangheili and many was appalled when he let humans come to their homworld.
That was a colony world on the fringe of Covenant space. The UNSC had core worlds completely destroyed to the point where no life was left on them. That also means industry and population. So while much of the fleet was destroyed, almost none of the industry which built it was.
UNSC Infinity plowing through a Covenant cruiser will never get old. ^^ Its actually kind of ironic, if the Covenant hadnt attacked humanity, we would have ripped ourselves appart in petty civil wars and conflicts. All the prophets had to to was to wait, maybe 10 years after the date of first contact, the Insuraction would have gained enough tracktion to openly oppose the UNSC. But the Prophets became greedy and paid the price for it...
I don't think Truth, Regret, and Mercy knew about the insurrection. Besides, humans were evidence that their religion was based on a misinterpretation and had to be removed before anyone else found out
Or if they tried a little harder. They could have ended it all at installation 04, but nooo, don't use plasma torpedoes, our second weakest ship based weapon, you might hurt the giant forerunner ring world!
Humans tend to split into tribes/clans and fight each other, even within our own nations. When an outside nation attacks the tribes or clans band together against the outsider. The one thing that is most likely to band all humanity together is a non-human threat, the Covenant walked into that role of their own religious fanaticism.
For anyone curious, the reason Regret's fleet was defeated in Halo 2 was because he was searching for the ark and had no idea he was following a trail to Earth. The covenant fleet from the beginning of Halo 2 was very unprepared

Brutes, grunts, elites Demons (Spartans), imps (ODST), vermin (humans) Even years later this game schools me on the complexity and gravity of war... on how in war it’s usual to demonise and demean the opposite side, hence ignoring the complexities behind it. 3 races with vastly different backgrounds Reduced to nicknames. Same as with humans, 3 vastly different roles again, just demonised Modern day movies really need to take a look at this in order to brush up on how to deliver a powerful message without hammering it
There was a faction of humans who wanted the human race to join the covenant. Their request was denied when the covenant decided humans had to be destroyed to protect the integrity of their religion.

Halo is my favorite sci-fi universe where humanity is the underdog. Its not unreasonable that we can fight back, and even gives us a crazy amount of time to get where we are in Halo, accounting for world wars and conflicts that arise as we become space-faring. The interweaving of forerunner lore and tech really adds another element to everything, because it allows for ground conflicts where humanity can really fight back. This is not to mention that we never stop losing ground, even during the covenant civil war, because our infrastructure was simply not strong enough. It took the flood and the Elites to win in the end, since the undoing of the covenant was simply cutting off the intelligent head and leaving the rest to writhe blindly. The food wiped out most of the high council along with mercy, the elites seceded and killed truth, and our boy 117 wasnt all powerful but managed to assassinate regret. The protagonist isn't the center to everything, but is justifiable (with cortanas help) a bringer of crucial intelligence along with being the one to prevent the great journey
Ah, this reminds me of why I loved the original 3 Halo games so much. A linear action FPS game that had hands-down one of the best stories of all time.
Just Move Along, There's Nothing to See Here He’s right you know, wh40k fan supremacy mentality is super annoying. Its true that most factions in 40k could stomp the covenant, except perhaps the Tau. Overall though, when you put ancient halo vs ancient 40k. 40k loses for sure, and this is coming from a huge 40k fan.
Been a PlayStation guy my whole life but damn Halo has some of the best sci fi lore out there hands down. Also the ending lines of this video gave me some chills. I am so glad I found this TH-cam channel
the moment I saw the name of the video I thanked god for sending the Templin Institute to us. You make all our lives better and I'm starting to think you don't know how to make a bad video, they're all incredible and perfect.
"Dear Humanity, we regret being alien bastards. We regret coming to Earth. And we most definitely regret that the Corps just blew up our raggedy-ass fleet!"
I just discovered this channel, these videos are fantastic! I'm a massive Halo fan and really love the lore so I'd be extra critical on this topic, but you guys did a great job!
All it takes is one egg to make contact with civilization/society. Once it's made contact, it's game over. You'd get xenos taking on traits of jackals, elites, brutes, grunts, and any other species that are apart of the covenant. xenomorphs have the ability to wipe out an entire planet it makes contact with without any use of weapons
The Forerunner Dreadnought was officially named in the book Halo Warfleet, which gives information about the major ships in Halo. The Dreadnought is called Anodyne Spirit.
This was an incredible amount of information. Even for a universe as fictitious as Halo, it still amazes me with its level of depth and history. thank you for posting this. It was very entertaining.
One of the biggest plot holes in Halo is the way the covenant deploys the Ungoy. After centuries of inefficient use on the frontlines, you’d think the covenant would be smart enough to teach them to fly ships.
It was partly their religious bias that prevented specialised the unggoy species. With the Banished, for example, you'll see that grunts are used as a much more versatile tool.
What are you talking about? "Inefficient"? They would toss young Unggoy into the meat grinder when there was too many of them, but the competent/older Unggoy were used in squads and they were deadly asf. Grunt fuel rod soldiers were known for inflicting heavy casualties, so were Unggoy Ultras and Spec ops. Hell even Majors and Minors were known for their trigger fingers. Unggoy also excelled at learning alien languages so they were put to good use in Covenant intelligence. Unggoy also DID pilot ships like drop ships
I love this channel so much. Your attention to detail, and the fact you treat this as if you were analyzing an actual historical civilization, just makes this one of the best channels on this platform. Keep up the awesome work!
As a big Halo lore nerd I was looking for innacuracies or important points not mentioned, but this was absolutely spot on and supremely professional. Bungie themselves couldn't have made better.
I love how you guys do your research. Other informational channels regarding Halo don't do as much research, often times which merely requires a simple reading of either Halo Nation or Halopedia. Not gonna name any names, but I think people know who I'm talking about when I say some don't do their research...
Alright, who has been hiding this channel from me all this time? Seriously, this has some great attention to detail and the background music is really nice. Great work.

Brandon Michaels let's see... *Covenant:* a bunch of stupid ass hats that don't know what the fuck they are doing, worshipping dead aliens and machines, hate humanity and want us all to burn in hell. *The Imperium of Man:* stupid ass hats that don't know what the fuck they're doing, hates all aliens so much they crack the alien's planet in half for not being human, half the population worships a true god-like being and the other worships machines, will probably shoot its citizens for turning to other so-called "gods" and will most likely give me steady employment in the meat grinder they call the Imperial Guard. Definitely, have to go with Imperium on this one, at least I get a job before I die on some backwater world.
ONI is the oversight... "Is ONI one happy family? Oh, please. We've got four divisions, officially, and only one of them knows that we've actually got more than that. There's Section Two-made up of psyops and PR, who each kid themselves they're not like the other at all-which tells the lies; Section Zero, which thinks it spies on everyone else, tells lies to Section Two, and thinks it tells lies to Sections One and Three; Section One does stuff we can almost talk about, the interface with other branches; and Section Three does the stuff we can't talk about or else it would have to kill everyone in fascinating and groundbreaking new ways. Technically, you're not a numbered section at all. You're the praetorian guard for CINCONI, in a way, and we just call CINCONI's staff Core Four, although it's actually in Core Five of Bravo-6, and DCS reports directly to it. You'll note I didn't mention HIGHCOM, and that's because all ONI sections lie to HIGHCOM and tell it that it's the most powerful body on Earth, which generally works well at keeping the old buffers convinced that they make the decisions. Now, are you confused? I certainly hope so, because that's my mission." - Black-Box

"But these are my elites, their lives matter to me yours does not."
"That makes two of us."
"Mmhh.."
The original trilogy has so many quotable moments it's insane. Bungies writing was top tier back in the day.
When Bungie was truly Bungie
"What is that?"
"I? I am a monument to all your sins."
Pretty much everything the gravemind says is infinitely quotable
The Gravemind, what a guy he was.
Too bad Bungie became a cash cow for Activision. Now it produces garbage like Destiny which is effectively a reskin of Call of Duty.
You know for so long I thought that was the Arbiter saying the commander's life meant nothing to him
I never realised until recently that it was the Arbiter talking about how he didnt care for his own life
The covenant is so interesting and cool. Templin institute you guys are amazing. Keep doing this awesome content.
+Ardent penance then why are the covenant left destroyed in the galaxy and humanity prevails!
Elite: "So uh we invaded this human base on a planet called Mars."
Truth: "And?"
Elite: "It seems someone beat us to it. There are bodies everywhere."
Truth: "Go on?"
Elite: "We seemed to have stumbled upon a sarcophagus. One of those Spartans was in it."
Truth: "And?"
Elite: "Every single one of my soldiers that engaged him no longer have heads."
Truth: "What?!"
Elite: "He ripped off their heads."
Truth: "HOW?!"
Elite: "I'm not sure but-Oh shit....."
Doom Slayer: "I'm getting sick and tired of these fucking attempted invasions on Earth."
Iconic Doom music start's blaring through Truths comms as more and more Elites scream and flee.
The Doomslayer and Master Chief fighting the covenant back to back on an alien planet while a massive battle takes place around them
Now that would be the ultimate crossover.
@@Rogue.Rainbow Flood-infested Demons would be extremely interesting as well.
@@blam320 Both of them would have to have unique playstyles. Doomslayer, I think, should be more melee oriented and have more explosive weapons. Master Chief should be mid to long range, then, with pulse weapons and rifles. All in all, it'd make a great co-op mode.
BFG division song intensifies.
Nice touch with having the _Infinity_ accentuate your point on how Mankind was poised to dominate the Galaxy.
I will always love that clip.
The Infinity needs a "We break for no one" sticker.
"Only half of humanity" How much of the industry though? Much of it was on worlds such as Reach.
*Remember Reach!* Never Forget!
Don't let it define you, if you don't escape your past, it will trap you.
Rapa Nuii CADIA STAND!!!
"was that because of reach!?!?" -random sanghelie i shot in halo 3
Halo 3: ODST saying in New Mombasa: "They are gonna glass the city! It is like Reach all over again" from ODST: Buck.
We need to NOVA bomb every major covenant world into oblivion.
UNSC Infinity plowing through a Covenant cruiser will never get old. ^^
Its actually kind of ironic, if the Covenant hadnt attacked humanity, we would have ripped ourselves appart in petty civil wars and conflicts.
They could have ended it all at installation 04, but nooo, don't use plasma torpedoes, our second weakest ship based weapon, you might hurt the giant forerunner ring world!
but that would just break up the UNSC not lead to the genocide of all humans like The Covenant wanted
after said break up we wouldn't have fought back a quarter as hard.
He didn't even know it was a human planet truth on the other hand.

Even years later this game schools me on the complexity and gravity of war... on how in war it’s usual to demonise and demean the opposite side, hence ignoring the complexities behind it. 3 races with vastly different backgrounds Reduced to nicknames. Same as with humans, 3 vastly different roles again, just demonised
Modern day movies really need to take a look at this in order to brush up on how to deliver a powerful message without hammering it
District 9’s “Prawns” nickname came pretty close, and that wasn’t even a war film!

When a channel not fully dedicated to Halo has better pronunciation of Halo Esq words than Halo Follower's main man
HaloFollower is a trash ass Halo channel.
He called forerunners as fucking foreigners wtf
Oh man, this is a big one
EDIT: after watching, one of my favourite videos from you. Would love to see one on the forerunners or even one of the smaller factions like the Insurrectionists, ONI or the Abiding Truth.
Love how this was done more as a documentary of the covenant rather than explanation of lore. Very well done.
That last part gives me chills to this day… this whole story of Halo is not even unreal… possibly way more than we right now may think.
Ah, this reminds me of why I loved the original 3 Halo games so much. A linear action FPS game that had hands-down one of the best stories of all time.

looks like its sweeping time Yeah, here you are spreading your heresy as well. 40k STOMPS the covenant, point-blank.
I am Dream
I was going to say the Tau could wreck the covenant, but then I remembered they don't have a dedicated/powerful Navy. Point taken.

I just discovered this channel, these videos are fantastic! I'm a massive Halo fan and really love the lore so I'd be extra critical on this topic, but you guys did a great job!
Still the coolest and badass aliens to this day
Kael 93 the xenomorphs would destroy them easily
Darkest Knight opinions, opinions everywhere.....
Darkest Knight they are cool but not really badass. More creepy.
All it takes is one egg to make contact with civilization/society. Once it's made contact, it's game over. You'd get xenos taking on traits of jackals, elites, brutes, grunts, and any other species that are apart of the covenant. xenomorphs have the ability to wipe out an entire planet it makes contact with without any use of weapons
looks like its sweeping time yes
Awesome video! I always wondered why the covenant was so fixated on destroying humanity rather than subjugating us like the other species
I love how they always explain everything easily
Honestly, this was one of your best videos to date! Fantastic work you guys, you've quickly become one of my favorite channels.

Mecha-san Oh 343 have pointed out multiple times that Humanity need some huge reformations first.
I certainly hope so, because that's my mission."
