      I agree, I could get a regular iPad for the same price and have a device that does so much more. hopefully the Remarkable 3 and 4 will have more features and be more affordable as the technology matures (I know eink has existed for a while but the actual writing tech seems to be relatively new and underdeveloped based on reviews of other similar tablets) edit: the accessories are also way overpriced...

      Yeah an iPad makes so much more sense, instead of moving the pdf to an unrelated device, marking it up, and sending it back out you could do it all in one on the iPad. Plus if you don’t like the UI of a notes app you can just get another one, you wouldn’t be stuck to what they think is best. Not to mention if you’re in to art, having a color display might be a lot better.

    Happy to see this, but two points for clarification: you can bend the cover to the back of the tablet do it doesn't had the incline and it's perfectly fine, and the pen gets placed a little bit higher on the rim than he did here, and it. stays. there. As for the shading part, with the pencil, if you tilt the pen you can actually get pretty realistic shading (much better than is showcased here) both my sister and I have been using it to draw.

    • @u3pyg
      @u3pyg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He also did not thought that for a right handed person, there is not such problem with the incline.

    • @OllAxe
      @OllAxe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ^This. The pen (as in the pen type in the software) used in the video was clearly not one that supports pressure and tilt sensitivity, so the demo in the video is not at all representative of the actual drawing experience. If you switch to the pencil you get to take advantage of the full feature set. That said, I'm personally not a huge fan of the pressure sensitivity curve and the inability to adjust it yourself, but I let a couple of my artist friends try it and they had no complaints

    I've had mine for about a month now, and absolutely love it. Yes, it's pricey and pretty niche, but it just feels great to use and makes me happy every time I open it up. It is best as a note-taking/sketching device, though: it can only handle unencrypted e-pubs and the screen's just a little small for full-page PDF papers. If you want an ereader, get a Kindle or Kobo, and if your primary use-case is marking up full-page documents a 13-inch device like the Onyx Boox Max Lumi is probably better. However, if you just want an electronic notebook or sketchbook that can do those other things in a pinch, the Remarkable is brilliant.

    Some points left out in this review that I feel need mentioning:
    - The battery can last you 2 weeks or longer depending on your use of the tablet. It's an e-ink tablet. As long as you put in on standby when you don't use it, it won't drain any battery outside of use.
    - You can select many different pen types, thicknesses and notpad formats. This is the MAIN reason why you would buy this thing, so I'm really surprised they didn't say anything about it... Things like hexagonal templates and different types of composer templates are really handy for all sorts of lines of work, not just artists.
    - The functionality of being able to draw on PDF-files is understated, this is my personal main use. I no longer have to print out files so that I can freely draw on them. I just send it to my Remarkable and start drawing.
    - There is also a handwriting to text option which works quite well, so if you're taking notes by hand during a meeting, just plop that on there and you have an e-mail of the meeting ready to go.
    - If you need a really in depth review of this product, check out @My deep guide on TH-cam. He has the best guides for e-ink tablets out there.

      First of all they dont do reviews on Short Circuit, they do unboxing, first impressions stuff, its so they can cover stuff that does not make sense for them to cover on their main channel. So dont expect perfection.
      well but it doesnt really give me anything a 330$ iPad a 100$ Apple pen and a 10$ screen protector for writing cant do, plus it gives a working tablet .
      -well okay 2 weeks is nice but i dont think you can drain an iPad in a day realistically. Maybe others do but i never saw charging my device sometimes as a problem, as at somepoint i need to sleep anyway. So as long as i never get caught out furing work I really couldnt care less.
      -Can do the samething on an iPad, but better because you have a good display, with lower latency and colours and probably the better stylus
      -get Goodnotes or any other good app and you can open and edit PDF files
      -Goodnotes does conversion, Onenote does good conversion
      I mean if you like that thing fine, i dont want to convince you otherwise, but whilst irrational reasons are still valid one to buy something, they really need to step up their game or step down their prices to convince to public their product makes sense. The other way would be to just claim this niche of eInk fans, but hey if(! dont know) their company makes money who am I to judge

      This thing is meant to replace old fashioned pen and paper. Yes, at a premium, but for me personally it is worth it if it means no longer carrying around 2 or 3 notepads and a binder full of sheet music. I have one of these and I love it. Have to correct a couple mistakes with this video:
    5:33 - The "mechanical pencil" tool does not have much pressure sensitivity. Change to the "pencil" tool to do shading.
    10:44 - You have the Marker too low. The eraser should be about 5mm from the top edge of the tablet. You'll feel a strong magnetic click when it's in the right spot.
    11:00 - Fold the cover all the way around to the back. Don't leave it open on the table like that. That's why it's getting in your way. I have the leather folio and never take it out.
    It's definitely an expensive product, but it's really very nice. I use it for technical drawings, sketching, taking notes, and reading PDFs personally.

    Had it now for several months and would not give it up again:
    - Excellent writing / sketching feeling, as if you work with paper. Very natural.
    - Drawing speed is very good - only slight delay, but I am no longer concious about it
    - Battery lasts really long (of course - e-ink)
    - Pen does not need battery
    - Rearrangement of content (moving, put on different layers etc) makes it superior to working with paper
    - Light weight
    - Good decision not to give it backlight (as many e-readers have), but of course means that you need a light source
    - Perfect in sun light
    It is a much more practical note taking and sketching device than iPad and co.

    I pre-ordered the gen 1 reMarkable and used it for my last two years of physics undergrad. I loved not having the weight of notebooks. I also didn't have to fight with professors about distractions like some peers who used iPads and Surface tablets. Gen 2 appears to have fixed a lot of the teething issues from Gen 1. It's a niche product, but still pretty cool!

    To do shading, you need to change your pen type to pencil, paintbrush or a couple of the other options. You were using the fine liner, which doesn't do shading (because you can't really shade with a real fine liner). The shading can get very light with pencil.
    I've got one of these, I have a lot of meetings and find that I can't listen and type at the same time, so I used to fill heaps of notepads and it was hell organizing them. It's expensive, you need a particular reason to want this over an iPad, but if you do need it, it works really well.

    I'm really conflicted because I really like the concept of the remarkable. I like to write my notes in order to retain the information I learn in uni and to study.
    However, I don't like how paper seems so wasteful. It also ends up wracking up a lot of storage, where I have piles upon piles of sheet notes which discourages me from actually going back to look for certain notes to revise.
    I'm really interested in the straighforwardness and simpleness of this remarkable tablet because I can store all my notes easier and in one place, I like that feels like writing on paper and theres not much of a lag and it's more accurate than writing on a tablet or iPad. People argue that the lack of other functions like apps etc. Is a downfall but I think it may good for me as I'll use it for what I intended which is note-taking rather than watching movies etc.
    I'm really conflicted because it's basically coming to the same price as an iPad and idk if I can bring myself to pay €400-500+ for this along with all the accessories. Could I get some advice?

    I had a reMarkable 1 and while some features were pretty cool, there were things about it, I really hated.
    1. It wasn't possible to set the "last shown note" as that thing, that would be shown, when the device goes into standby. Screen was locked and nothing could be seen anymore. So it wasn't useable as a replacement for sticky notes on my desk.
    2. While the OCR worked pretty well, it wasn't possible to attach the recognized text to the document as metadata, so you are able to search for a specific content in your note-documents. I had about 30-40 documents on it (notes out of presentations or meetings), and there was no option to search for 'SQL Server' to find "oh, there was that meeting with SQL Server talks...". You hat to make a first page of your Document with a title on it, so you can recognize it, when looking at the thumbnails.
    3. As already mentioned, there is no equivalent for a pencil. There is no way to draw fine greyed lines and thick black lines, it's always black.
    These things killed the device for me, although I hoped for a proper replacement for my paper notes. At that price, there were too many bad things for me on it.

    Yeah, I was an original backer, as I recall, at least I pre-ordered it for a percentage discount anyway (30% maybe?). I ended up somewhat disappointed and I only used it for a few hours. I don't know if things changed (no doubt there have been several updates since), but I believe in early days it was pretty limited in features, especially for reading? Like, it didn't support much or something? I had considered making mine my default e-reader, but that ended up being a bust. I think one major problem I had with it was that it didn't support (transparent?) PNGs or image files or something that really ought to have came out of the box, considering that they were heavily advertising its use as an artist's sketchpad.
    Also yes. The accessories, namely the covers, were unpleasantly Apple-like in how overpriced they were. That basic fabric folio being $70 is just a rip-off. I think my pre-order came with one (and the basic pen?).

    really do not think this is actually worth it. $450 for the tablet and pen when you can just buy an iPad and the Apple Pen. Itll be more expensive in the end, but the screen looks nicer, has next to no latency and the thing does more.

    • @danielleesposito5487
      @danielleesposito5487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i don’t think it would be more... the base ipad is 329. apple pencil gen 1 is 99. then you can add on one of those special paper screen protectors too. that’s only like 15$. definitely a much better buy. you can also go used and probably find it for much cheaper

    • @3Rton
      @3Rton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only reason you'd go for a device like this, though, is the E-ink style screen which is very far into different direction than the LCD tablet devices.
      I do agree that it isn't worth the money, though, or rather that the features built around the device just aren't refined and broad enough yet to justify the price but they really aren't trying to compete with someone who wants to buy an Ipad or Surface or Eve.
      I personally would want general purpose E-ink style device because I feel a definite difference between reading on one and typical LED based screens but there isn't really E-ink device that makes sense to me price wise.

      It’s not trying to be an iPad, it’s targeting a different market. One that only wants a device that takes notes and does is better than anything on the market. Writing on an iPad even with the matte screen protectors is worse in my experience, the screen is harder on the eyes after long periods of time, and the battery is much worse. If you want a device JUST to take notes like paper and read like textbook PDFs, it destroys the iPad at those. If you want fancy notetaking features and more general purpose stuff, iPad will be better.

    • @danielleesposito5487
      @danielleesposito5487 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Plexiii13 yes but an ipad is a whole ass computer. you can have one thing to do everything. i suppose the the matte screen protectors might not be as good, but they still do the job. now for it being harder on the eyes... i recommend dark mode. i use the notes app along with dark mode and it’s nice. i’m not sure who the target audience for this would be... i’m guessing students because they’re the ones who are constantly taking notes... but for 450? an ipad and apple pencil is cheaper than that. and you can do more. i understand your point, but i feel that it’s kinda a dumb move to spend so much more for something that does so much less. plus there are notebooks that you can buy with reusable paper. they’re kinda cool. you can’t edit pdfs or anything, but you can use the app to scan your notes and make them into pdfs or something
