This was such a helpful review! I always have a hard time spending money and I bought one of these on eBay but considered selling it right away. After watching this, I think I’ll keep it and enjoy it!
I totally get that! It’s a very specific kind of tablet but if you’ve got a decent use case for it, it makes sense! Just got the new reMarkable Pro and… I’m not impressed. Video dropping soon.
I love mine - I used to have a notebook for each type of meeting/project - but then when pulled into last minute meetings I would grab the wrong notebook- and I get distracted easily- so for me, this works perfectly!!!
how do you deal with finding things? do you rely on multiple digital notebooks and just flicking back a few pages, or are they searchable in some way? It doesn’t seem to do handwriting recognition so I’m worried about being able to find things after taking notes
@@MrKlawUK Remarkable 2 (and now remarkable Pro too) can't search inside the notes, even though it deals OK with transcribing hand notes to typed. You can only search by tags you do on notes (not automatic, you have to physically tag them), file names and folders. So they way I run my notes is that I create new notebook per meeting / project / call etc. If I've had a long meeting I just add tags. Still easier than flipping through a physical notebook but I'd love to be able to search inside the notes. I'll drop a review on Remarkable Pro soon as I'm pretty disappointed with it...
I really like this review. I have seen so many reviews for products that I feel like are solving problems that are not really problems. I don't care that I can't multitask, search, copy paste, etc on paper - that's why I like paper. It forces you to slow down and be intentional. I have ADHD so any kind of digital device can very easily destroy my productivity. I still don't think the price is justified for me, as I haven't run into the same issues you had with paper. My pocket notebooks haven't gotten out of hand, but I've been using them consistently for like a year. This really does look like a great device. I've seen one in person (not actually used it) and it looked great.
Totally agree the price is fairly high for what it is. It did however became part of my edc replacing other classic notebooks as it has simplified my life. I absolutely understand the ADHD part - not a big fan of the recent fake ADHD social media wave of “influencers” claiming it’s some special power… maybe, because they don’t have it? It’s a massive PITA in everyday life. Took me 30 years to understand I have it and another almost 10 to start managing my life around it. And having people adjust their expectations to my attention span too 😂 If pen and paper works for you dude, it’s for the best! And thanks for the kind words 🤙🏻
You hit some key comments that resonated with me. When your clicking away om a laptop at a meeting it can be distracting. If using your phone, it looks like your not paying attention.
Remarkable 2 biggest issue is how much the device costs to do one thing. It’s more expensive than the IPad 10.9 inch with apple pencils and paper like screen protectors included. I have a remarkable 2 that was provided to me through work, and I love it. I wanted one to have for night classes. I said no thank you when I got to the checkout page and it said $629 for a one color tablet, a cover and a “marker plus.” If they want to charge that much they have to add a little more functionality if you ask me. Allow to import a calendar, more and better templates, much much better typing options, something for that horrible cost. For the $629 an iPad 10 with keyboard, pencil and paperlike is $670. Is it as good as the remarkable 2 for distraction free notebook? No maybe only 75% or 89% as good. But it’s 100% better at everything else.
I don't see the slow refresh as a problem. If I had a moleskine and was flipping the pages, would I expect to flip the pages faster? So, the lag in certain areas actually help me stay grounded to pace myself, think of what I'm using it for, focus on the subject at hand, write (or type if you have the type folio), and get your words out to the digital paper. Slow, means I have to slow down to meet it in the middle. If I had a device that could do 240Hz refresh rates, and had all the power in the world, I would feel that I would have to match it to keep up. And that's the opposite of what the device is trying to do. This is your moment to breathe, be mindful of what you want to say with your stylus or keyboard, slow down and get it written. Then close it and go on with your day. And in that time, you can have the focus and clarity to know what the mission is for the day. When our alarms go off, we're expected to be going at full speed until we hit the pillow again. And this type of device gives you the time to just slow your roll, and not try to burn yourself out begging for a vacation day so you can regain consciousness.
I ended up buying an iPad just due to the crazy cost of remarkable, just couldn't part with my hard earned cash for that price. I know people say it distracting etc, but hey I can watch movies, I can edit videos, I can draw and paint etc
Totally get that. I always have my MacBook with me so that's sorts out the comms, editing etc. Remarkable is a very specific device and yes, the price is defo a sticking point. Loads of used ones kicking about... usually used just a few times.
Thanks for the superb review , im getting a remarkable 2 for around less than half the price through an office allowance fund . How good is it for taking meeting notes , organising them and sharing via email? Your thoughts would be appreciated?( especially considering the great deal I’m Getting it for ) .
I use my Remarkable 2 on a daily basis still - and as a digital paper notebook it does its job really well. The only thing I'm missing is being able to search within the notes but with my hand writing I'm pretty surprised it can still, somehow, transcribe this into typed text.
@@JakeOskiwow that’s awesome , thanks for the response! Just curious , I see a boss Catana and a Yamaha pacifica and an Ibanez in your room . Are you also a musician :)
Have you tried the Kindle Scribe? I have both the remarkable2 and the scribe and both are really fantastic, I often lean to the scribe as of late for the higher resolution and front light, it’s great to have one device for reading and writing. The downside is no quick access drawer and no finger gestures, it takes too many steps to go between notebooks or from writing to reading a book.
I haven't for the reasons you've mentioned. Finger gestures are epic, I use the double tap to undo more often than the eraser. Front light would be nice but when I'm taking notes there's always enough of ambient light - I totally get your point though!
@@JakeOski Yes, lack of gestures or favourites/recents is a pain. Such an easy thing for Amazon to add, but that's the downside of the Kindle, Amazon do not care at all about it :) It does sell for super cheap though and has many little conveniences the reMarkable lacks: front light, magnetic sleep/wake, a sharper 300 PPI display with better contrast, the case is similar (magnetic) but it''s vertical with ability to stand (love that), much more responsive when opening larger PDFs, better/adjustable contrast in PDFs, built in dictionary/spell check, better handwriting recognition, better battery life and faster charging, no subscription costs, kindle library access, support for pens with buttons (like dedicating a button for the eraser or highlighter which somewhat gets around the gestures limitation), less writing latency, sunrise/sunset auto screen temperature adjustment, etc. I bought it because it was 1/3 the price of a reMarkable2 with accessories, I just couldn't resist, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised and it found a place in my life alongside the reMarkable :)
Do you need to have the Connect Subscription to sync between the Desktop App (for Windows) and the Mobile App (for Android)? I was just wondering because it would be good if I am "in the field" to be able to review notes and confirm things that I had taken down as notes EARLIER without the need to bring along the reMarkable 2. If I can access my data from my SmartPhone and somehow it syncs. That would be great and I would use the Desktop App to take backups either locally or on Google Drive. Care to comment/reply???
It syncs with their app but only the current notes. After some time they stop syncing updates if you leave the file unused for months. But usually at that time that file is probably redundant anyway. If you wanna keep working on an old file all you have to do is to create a copy and it will start syncing again. So no real need to purchase the subscription;
@@JakeOski Hmm... Let's say I have like 5 to 10 notebooks all for different projects... And I work on them perhaps once or twice per week. Will they still sync because I am updating them weekly??? Or is there some kind of hard limit that after 5 months a notebook will NOT sync?! Because I'll probably add to a notebook regularly when I work on a specific project ... Just maybe not all the time but as I always do, I may come back to a project later in the week (or perhaps at worst, later in the month)??? I guess what I am saying that PAGES get old, but the notebooks will be refreshed with new pages "regularly". Will sync-ing still continue with this method of writing/editing??? Many Thanks. I've watched the video many times and I find there's new information that I learn each time I watch it.

Thanks Steve! It's hard to quantify usefulness of this device - as you've seen from one of the comments, "most stupid things you can buy" and you should just use pen and paper 😂 For me, this has replaced all my notepads - so it's a 10 just as a tool for taking notes, annotations, scripts, mocking plans and risk assessments on site as I don't have to worry to much about dropping it as I would with an iPad Pro. I'd just fish for a used one to test the waters, this way you can sell it for the same price as you've got it if it doesn't suit your needs.

I ordered the Remarkable and returned twice hoping that the my IPAD m4 would finally “feel” good writing and now I am thinking getting this again 😢 - I just wish for 2 additional things - a little more connectivity to the Apple ECO - for example connecting to Apple Notes - why I drop links to multiple resources (website URLS, word Docs (without importing etc.) AND the ability to take notes on Kindle Books - Ahh First World Problems! 😂 Thank you for the Video!
iPads are great too, I've got plenty of friends using them as notebooks but RM2 just feels much better to write on. Totally with you on tapping into Apple eco system, integration with Notes would be fire! Same with Kindle app!
Nope, it stays in the cloud. Lack of subscription only doesn't sync up updates to notes you haven't worked on over a few months. It's all the old notes that you don't edit anyway. If there's one you wanna work on again, all you have to do is just duplicate it and get going again. Not a massive issue to be fair.
I love my RM2. I love it even more since I learned how to use Tags. Subscription is absolutely a must for me. For example, I am at my desk. I take a call, I jot down stuff related to the call. I then grab my test equipment and head to a network closet. But when I get there I am like, was it switch port 12 on network switch 1, or port 12 on switch two? I grab my phone, open up the remarkable app, bring up the notes I just wrote on my RM2 at my desk, and yup I was completely off, it is port 22 on switch 3. I was so close:)! I am likely going to get the Paper Pro as I also diagram all the time and it would really be helpful if I could see the colors I am writing with. And many PDF documents use color graphs or diagrams to highlight info which I can't take advantage of with my RM2. But I have been watching the reviews of the Paper Pro and there are some things that are preventing me from buying it today. You must use the RM pen and it is apparently even harsher than the eraser pen with the RM2. I even purchased third party pens for my RM2 which I keep at my work desk and home desk. I only use the RM pen when I am doing a construction walk-through and then I just use the RM2 pen which is held to the RM2 by magnet (love that is is right there). Then there is mention that the Paper Pro makes a slight noise when it is refreshing the screen. I hear everything, electic motor whirring, induction stove whirring, etc. So I am hesitant. Great video on just how useful the RM2 is. I love mine and it is just so cool that every note for any given project or task is right there on the RM2, my phone, and my desktop! Perfect for me!
I'll be releasing my take on reMarkable Pro in a few days too - I totally concur the above. I'm really annoyed you can't use 3rd party pens and their are just way overpriced. RM2 is good for what it is, still pricy given limited functions but it works. RM Pro is a bit of a joke when you add it all up. If you're spending that amount of money Apple iPad Pro kinda makes more sense. But I'll dive into that in a few days
Do you rate the new Remarkable Pro? I’ve just bought a Remarkable 2 (after seeing your video). The Pro is heavier and I wonder if the battery lasts as long as the R2. Anyway, I’m enjoying my R2.
Hey! I've just ordered Remarkable Pro to compare. The battery is larger but it lasts about the same as it needs to power more power-hungry screen. Plus the weight is a trade off too, I like the R2 due to its form factor and effectively being much lighter and smaller than iPad Pro. I don't really need colours for note taking but we'll see. I'll definitely drop an honest video comparison towards the end of the month when I'll spend enough time with it to form an opinion.
Notepads are written down, and then unsearchable, so not the greatest solution. Sure, it was great in the 20th century, but we've moved on. And if you do use one of those notepads in the meeting, you then have to come back to your desk and transcribe it into some digital format, eliminating the value of the notepad. So the only thing it gained for you was the portability and unpluggedness, while you're in the meeting. And that's like what you're saying where Remarkable comes in. It's unplugged, allows you to immediately digitally record your thoughts, and then either share or convert using OCR to text and email the team or whatnot. So it combines the technologies instead of replaces, and doesn't create additional burdens with having to re-write your notes in the meeting. I also did the same, and also recorded the conversation. But when I got back to my desk, I was now transcribing using the keyboard all the content, and trying to make out what everyone was saying, and who was saying it, etc. I became the stenographer.
It's about having the freedom of paper, but still have some of the benefits of digital. Copy/paste, undo, layers, a file system, tags, zoom and panning, etc.
This was such a helpful review! I always have a hard time spending money and I bought one of these on eBay but considered selling it right away. After watching this, I think I’ll keep it and enjoy it!

Great review! Useful, real world details.
Thanks :)
@@JakeOski thank you. I am very satisfied with my new R2 also. Simplicity! 👍
2:55 - please make a video of you setting fire to the ReMarkable 2 please? 😂😊
If you'll Venmo me for a new one I'll do it 😂
Notepads are written down, and then unsearchable, so not the greatest solution. I became the stenographer.
its just too expensive :/
You can easily find used ones for half price :)
The most stupid things you can buy!! You want the feeling of pencil and papper go and buy a pencil and a notebook for 2 dollars🤯
What a stupid comment
It's about having the freedom of paper, but still have some of the benefits of digital.
Copy/paste, undo, layers, a file system, tags, zoom and panning, etc.
@gerrya2133 lol
Going to take a wild guess you did not hear a thing this guy said in the beginning of the video..
@PumpUptheJam81 wild guess you probably bought one lol..
