In this video, I'm taking you along as I go get my Toyota Tacoma Tune from a dude that does the OVTune. In addition to the OVTune, he also upgraded my ECU to the latest version which includes a Toyota TSB. This OVTune completely changed my Tacoma and is one of the best 3rd gen tacoma mods available.
OVTune is from a company called Orange Virus. They license out the software & tunes so that random people can go around tuning other people's Tacomas. This was the case for me!

OV Tuned for 50k miles, it still makes me smile every time I drive it!
I'm loving it so far! Truck drives soooo much smoother. And always feels like the power is there when you need it.
So far 147 miles on the tune and I'm digging it so far definitely improved my everyday commute . In April taking a road trip to pikes peak I got this tune just for this trip and I'm excited for this one I've done a trip to glacier national park bone stock loaded to or over max lol and did a 3,000 plus mile trip on 265 cooper stt pros ehhh loaded but not overloaded had cat back exhaust on and a drop in kn filter , this trip though pretty much have every engine bolt on besides headers and supercharger lmao

@@KnightWheelsMedia I’m running the 2.0 Final 4.88 gear tune. At 70mph with 265/75/r16 it’s running at 2200 rpm. Can you tell me what your speed limiter is at? Mine is 90mph but I think it’s because I’m running 4.88 gears too.

Loving it so far man! Well worth the money if you're experiencing the problems I was. However, I'd suggest trying to get the TSB from the dealership first if possible haha

@@KnightWheelsMedia I’m a little confused about the TSB for newer model years. People were talking about this back in 2018. Is Toyota not shipping new models with this already done? Would you still have to get this done on a 2022?
@@user-te3qq1rb7u newer models (2021+) should all definitely have the most updated ECU at this point so you should be good
I did the tune a couple of weeks ago. What I was really curious about was towing my 6x14 enclosed trailer. Night and day difference. More torque and power where I need it. It was worth every penny.

I believe with TSBs the manufacturer isn't required to notify owners so you only hear of it by word of mouth haha

@@zaner11b8 typically you need a regear if you are running 33"+ tires and carry a lot of weight on the truck (bumpers, bed rack, skids, RTT, etc.)
If your truck is stock, you shouldn't need a regear. I would definitely go with a tune in that case.

Hahaha it's because someone in a previous video thought I was really short or my truck was really tall because of the way I was sitting and camera angle
FYI a lot of TSB will be covered under the factory warranty. The reflash for the shift TSB should be covered under the 5/60k powertrain warranty.
TSB are just a way to help speed up the diagnosis, repair and repair verification because the manufacturer has noticed a pretty common issue for that symptom or concern.
Yup exactly. Unfortunately I've heard of dealerships giving people the run around when they want the TSB update though.

I got mine done today, possibly the same guy (looks like the same computer and also from FB) but the truck feels 100 times better. Well worth the 8-hour round trip.

I just got my ovtune for my 2021 standard tacoma trd sport and u can feel some adjustment to the engine and changing gears it’s really smooth

I just bought a 2021 and drove it from Montana to Alaska. I love the little truck, but I'm glad this tune exists. The stock truck does not drive like a normal vehicle and I'm planning to get this tune very soon.

Very informative and descriptive. Considering a Tacoma and coming from a BMW wagon. Wife is blessing this move as she is a ER nurse and wants the kids to have a bigger car/truck. I’m stoked bc it fits my lifestyle of cycling and surfing. Had one in 2011 but in San Francisco and it was a nightmare to park. I’m sure an OV Tune is LA is 399 plus and any other ‘must have’ performance mods Recs? . Your description of what the Tacoma lags in is where my current car thrives in and I like the feel of my bmw in the canyons when I go surfing. There’s a utility of having to get my ass home back to work or back to the kids. I have small windows to strike and a fast performance ride in curvy highways sticks when gears are shifting every 10 seconds. Any other tips on expectations would help. Car seats are a whole another issue. Thanks again.
My only Apprehension of the vehicle is performance and gas ($4.65 in LA) and when you surf there’s a lot of wasted gas on checking surf spots
Honestly I'd recommend taking a good test drive before deciding. And make sure to check out the back seat space and see if it's suitable for your children as they grow haha it can be pretty tight
But otherwise, the Tacoma is an awesome vehicle. Like any, it has its quirks and downfalls but overall it's great. As far as other mods, the truck rides great stock but as you upgrade you need upgrades for those upgrades to make it smooth again haha
Most of what you described by it holding a gear is what the ect button does. 👌

Great video. Looking at this tune for my 2021. Do you feel like you're adding any real strain on the drive train at all? Or does it just feel natural and designed for the truck?
No not really. The only thing that's really different is the initial push of the throttle is touchy. However I believe my guy specifically tuned it that way.
Alright, just started the video amd I'm jealous. Not yet jealous with not having the OV tune, but the damn sunglasses. What brand style are those. I'm no where near a tropical area, so you won't see them on me, but if you tell me what they are and the state you're in I promise not to where then if I get vst tht state. Hopefully, you're not in CO. Ok, gonna watch the rest of the video and call my dealership to see if the YTSB was performed in my tacoma
Hahaha they're the Costa Rinconcito I believe. Got them as a Christmas present but love them! The lenses are glass & polarized so they do really well with cutting glare. Would definitely recommend!

What year is your Tacoma? I’m looking at either a pre owned’22 or a new ‘23, just curious if the new ones need an OV tune. Also if there is a service bulletin out on them. Really liked your video, reassured me.
I had a 19. There was a TSB for the older ones but I believe all 2020+ were "fixed"
Either way, I think the tune does make a difference. Newer trucks still have the same sluggish transmission

How does this compare with the Pedal commander plug-in device?
Would the OVtune void the warranty or cause any issues if you have to bring it in to the dealership?
The Pedal Commander simply adjusts the pedal/throttle sensitivity. As far as I know, it won't do anything for helping with the shift points and lulls in the power bands. People rave about them, but my opinion on them is the mindset "if I want the truck to accelerate faster I'll just press the pedal harder" lol
I believe the OVTune would technically void your warranty. I mentioned this in another comment, but I personally believe it would be hard for the dealer to prove that the tune directly caused the issue you are trying to warranty. The dealership could simply re-flash the ECU and it would go back to stock.

Great video. I've forgot, yours is lifted/larger tires? Sounds like it runs similar to having ECT on? How does ECT effect driving with the new tune? Tuned to 87 or 91/93? Thanks.
Thanks! Yes I'm lifted 2" on 32" tires. 87 tune.
It does feel similar to ECT, if not a little more touchy. However that's solely for acceleration and the shift points are different. Haven't felt the need to drive with ECT on with the tune haha but I'll have to try it out!
If you are in California after tune did you check to have it smogged? California is getting hard on ecu mods?
I'm in Florida so I don't know, but I've heard you can't tune in California anymore
I’m thinking about doing this on my 2018 off road. A while back the Orange Virus was $750 but now I can easily get a local guy to do it for $250. I’m not sure what’s going on. Are they the same tune?
Yes same tune. Previously OVTune was pretty exclusive to authorized installers but recently they started licensing it to anybody under a new name VFTuner. At least that’s my understanding haha

Hi Mike! I don't think there is a tune available for the 2nd gen unfortunately. My suggestion would be to check Tacomaworld just in case though.
This tune makes the Gen 3 keep up with a Gen 2 so you're already good bro 😅
There's one for 2013 it's call overland tailor torque tune (hp tune)

It's the 87 octane tune. Mainly wanted it for the gear hunting/power lag fix rather than performance.

Great video! Question. Did you have to buy anything in order for your ECU to accept the tune? It was my understanding that you had to go through OV Tune to purchase some stuff first.
Nope! The guy who did the tune did all of that. It's essentially just a computer software and a USB to OBDII cable to connect the computer to the truck & transfer the tune. I know there's VFTuner software that does it but there might be others as well.

On the fence between taco trd or a f150. I am a yota fan but the complaints about the transmission had me worried. Your video just put the taco back on top.
Probably depends on what you wanna use the truck for. I wanted a mid size so I can fit on trails.
And honestly, if you plan to keep it stock the transmission is fine unless you're towing or hauling. Even then, you can just use the manual mode.
Trading fuel effiency for pleasure. I'm with it.
I'm actually getting better fuel economy now believe it or not haha about 1-2MPG better under similar driving conditions... and that's WITH the touchier throttle too. Kinda crazy.

I just tuned my 2017 and just for a short 20 mi drive I definitely noticed a difference I'm running km3 285/75/16 method nv305 wheels k&n intake , cat back exhaust mbrp, ripp performance coils , afe throttle body spacer . The tune I choose cause I bought the whole damn program!!! Is the 91 octane performance tune for 33in tires and throttle enhanced I drive daily 100+ miles that's a round trip so I'm gonna for sure gets some miles in for the tune to settle oh my truck sits at 110,576 miles I'm original owner

Great question.
You might be okay with a 2021 if it has the most upgraded version. I'd ask your OVTune guy about it. He should be able to do it.
My guy's software checked for the update first & made him upgrade it before he could do the tune.
There are no TSB upgrades for 2021 yet your ECU ID should be 04C30

Is there a place where non-Facebook people can find local tuners? Everyone on Tacoma World only wants to talk about the K&D Performance tune and I think the OVTune might be more for me with my stock Tacoma. Not going to be an Overloader or run big tires or lift. Just looking for a reputable and experienced local OVTuner in Phoenix.

Best mod you can do to a Tacoma hands down. Forget all the cosmetic crap. Get it tuned first, or right after you lift it, or get bigger tires. Also get the TRD air filter for it. Thank me later.

Does this mean you don’t need to regear after slapping some 35’s on your Taco? Does OV tune replaces this?
oh no haha if you're on 35s you're definitely gonna wanna regear. The OVTune adds some torque/HP and better shifting, but it's not gonna be enough to turn 35s like stock.
The tune may help a little but I'd definitely recommend a regear for 35s
Can you please tell me the benefit of doing this vs getting a tuning system added like hp? Does this add hardware? Or do you just go to dealer and they provide the service. Can you reverse this?
This is purely a software tune to your truck's ECU. This is an aftermarket modification so the dealer won't/can't do it, you have to either find someone to do it for you or buy the hardware and software license to do it yourself.
Yes it is reversible if you get your ECU flashed by the dealer.
I have a 2018 sport and find that if I drive on sport, the gear shifting is better. But now I’m interested in the tune.
Yeah no need to drive around on sport all the time. I'd definitely look into getting tuned!

I just bought a used 2021 Tacoma with 17,000 miles on it. I think I need this. The truck seems doggy off the line and seems like it doesn't know what gear it wants to be in. Does this mod affect my warranty?
Short answer is yes it could affect warranty. However, it would be hard for a dealership to tell that it's tuned and even harder for them to prove that it caused any issues.

Technically, yes. However it would be hard for anyone to actually tell that your truck is tuned. Check out my other two videos about tuning where I talk about it a little more 🤙🏼
Oh man, all those issues with the shifting is one of the biggest gripes with this truck. The lag, gear hunting, and weird shifting when accelerating is so annoying. I wonder if that tsb is for 2019 tacoma's too.
Yes the TSB should be for 2019 Tacomas as well. Definitely ask your dealership about it haha
The shifting & bluetooth connectivity are the only things I had issues with lol

Wait there’s something to fix the throttle lag in the Tacomas?? Could you tell me more about this TSB tune? I’m trying to get my truck modded a little bit and an OV tune, but this is the first I’m hearing of the TSB!
Edit: I’m assuming if I were to ask a dealership for this tune I would just ask them to flash my ECU to the latest firmware?
I don't know too much about the TSB other than it's meant to help with the gear hunting. That said, the dealership would know more about it so you can ask them if your truck is eligible to get it. If you have a newer truck, you may already have the TSB version for your ECU.
In that case, you may want to look into getting a tune instead.

Could technically void your warranty but it would be hard for a dealer to tell that it's tuned & even harder for them to prove it caused an issue. For manual transmission I believe it helps all but one gear (3rd?) from what I've heard

With all the different people that can put this tune in your truck is it the same tune or are these guys able to tweak it? Just wouldn’t want to get it from someone who thinks they know more than they do.
Typically they should be able to tweak the tune based on tire size, armor, etc.
However I believe there is like a "stock" or generic OVTune if you're worried about it. Whoever you find to do it I'd just suggest asking all your questions and if they won't take the time to answer them then it's probably better to move on and find someone else lol
Also, I believe there are "certified" OVTune installers so you could look into that as well.

Mine is a 2019. I believe you can tune a 2021 no problem but I'd suggest asking the tuner just to make sure.
question. Are you now Burning through gas faster before the tune?
Gas mileage is better after the tune. I didn't get the tune for performance or increased throttle response, so my driving habits are roughly the same.
Wondering the same from other commenters below - ballpark cost? Would like to know roughly how much to expect before going to the dealership. Also - any ideas on how this effects warranty?

So it really depends on the guy doing it. Anybody can buy the software licensing, and OBDII cable to do the tune.
The guy who did my tune was on the lower end but typically they'll be around $200-250. I'd say the range overall is anywhere from $150-300. Like I said, mine was on the lowest end of that lol but I agreed not to post the price specifically. Hope that helps!

However, I personally think it would be hard to a dealer to prove a) that you had an aftermarket tune and b) that the tune specifically caused whatever issue you are trying to make a warranty claim on (see: Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act)

If you like the OV tune then get the Magnuson supercharger you’ll love it.
I'd love to get one someday haha but the price tag is pretty steeeeep. I'll do it if my channel gets big enough to help pay for it 😂

Typically around $200-300. A lot of people still get the tune with gears but I'd suggest trying to get the TSB done with your dealership first if you have gear hunting issues.

This is in Florida. There are a TON of guys on the west coast doing tunes though.
I'd suggest reaching out to local dealers first to try and get the TSB. Then if you still want the tune hit up the local Tacoma Facebook groups to find someone.

Knightacoma, how can I get in touch with the guy that did your tunes? I really don't want to take my truck to my Toyota dealership as they are all about soaking you with the cost. Any info of anyone doing the tunes in North Carolina would be sincerely appreciated.
Hey man check out the map that I linked in the description. That's the map of KDMax certified tuners. I have a couple other videos about the tunes too that I'd suggest watching before going to get tuned🤙🏼 also, Toyota doesn't do the tunes they just do an ECU update which you tuner will do as well
Tacomas have a "learning" computer" . Have you found that your truck is going back to the factory settings yet?
I haven't noticed any changes. Still feels tuned where it's shifting smoother/less often.
I need to find someone around the Texas Panhandle area to do this for our 4Runner it's in need of it.
I'm not sure if there is a tune available for the 4Runner. Last I heard the ECU hasn't been unlocked/figured out yet to where someone can make a tune for it.
I was just thinking this, too bad they don't offer it for the 4.0. The 4.0 in the 4Runner really does suck.

How does the computer act when you use the ECT power button with the tune?
I never really used ECT to begin with, but I'm told it functions the same with the tune as it does without.
Where did u buy this ? Also where are you located ? Will this pass smog in California ?
I'm in Florida. Not sure on the smog stuff in California but there's a ton of tuners out West that could do it for you

Just picked up a 2021 taco trd sport premium , 3 km on it .... do you think it’s a good idea to tune it now or later when the truck is broken in?
I'd definitely recommend letting the truck break in first at least 1000mi.
But honestly with a 2021 you should have the most upgraded ECU version so you'll probably only want to do a tune if you want some performance gains or notice some dips in the power bands.

@@ericr6282 with a 2021 you most likely have the most updated version. You could ask the dealership about it on your next maintenance visit

With a new 2021 Tacoma, you should have the latest TSB update for the ECU. So the transmission shift points shouldn't be as bad on your truck. I'd say drive it for a while & if you feel that you're having lack of power, bad shift points, etc. then maybe look into getting it tuned.

I got around 2-3 MPG gain but not everyone does. Not sure why but I'm not complaining lol
Anyone know if this would void warranties? I have a 2019 trd offroad and I feel a lot of "drag" and even some rough downshifts when I am braking. Also anyone know someone in south Florida who does tunes?

Haha it's a really big issue with anyone who lifts/adds bigger tires. Glad to see the tune helped a bit though!
@@KnightWheelsMedia yeah I only am rocking bigger tires (32" KO2s) and a steel front skid plate. My taco is a trd sport with a 6 speed manual. I get around 15 mpg, and that's mostly highway mileage.

Where do these people “get the tune”? It’s a computer upgrade and no offense but it looked like you guys all met n wal mart parking lot. Where do I find the guys in my area with a “tune”. What did it do if anything to gas mileage?
The company that made the tune started licensing it out, so people can buy the necessary software and tune their trucks or others.
So you can find people who bought the software & licenses to do the tune for you, hence the random meet up location.
So you can either buy the software & license (around $1k+ startup costs) and tune yourself or you can ask around on local Tacoma FB groups or TacomaWorld to see if anyone is doing them in your area.
As far as MPG, I gained around 2-3 city but highway is roughly the same, if not slightly better.
Did you add 91 octane?
I'm on the 87 octane tune. Mostly wanted it to fix the bad shift points & throttle response moreso than I did for performance.
However the guy that tuned it said it's easier for the tune to "learn up" than it is for it to "learn down"... meaning that using 87 octane in a 91 tune is okay and it'll figure it out, but using 87 octane with a 91 tune will run rough and not be a good time.
I'm not sure on the validity of that and the ECU's ability to "learn", but I use 87 and didn't feel the need to change that haha
Does this improve mpg in any way?
It helped for me. Averaging a solid 1-2 mpg more.

I haven't towed with it yet, but have plans to do A LOT of towing in the near future lol

it doesn't really change the button too much. If anything the throttle is just a bit touchier, but I never really noticed much of a difference with the ECT button when stock.

Worth a shot! You can always get your ECU flashed back to stock if you don't like it.
Check out the KDMax tuning video I just posted though. I think it's an improvement over OVTune.

Yes it is. If the dealership or someone re-flashes your ECU I believe it would clear the tune.
