    Honestly, one of the best (if not the best) tacoma content pages on the internet. Very relatable and realistic content for the average owner than can't/won't dump 20k-50k into making a truck into a baja racer or overlander.

    I put the OT Tune on my 21 TRD OR. I couldn't be happier. My truck is still mostly stock and I have seen a small improvement to fuel economy. But the improved driveability is worth it alone.

    I waited a year to get my 22 OR AC tuned, my truck is stock. The tune was amazing in throttle response and it sure really improved the gear hunting. 1 week after the tune my truck went I to the dealership for the factory oil change, etc and they never mentioned anything about it. I love my OTT upgrade. 4 months now, and still loving it. Got the middle lower power programming setting/option, which makes the truck feel like it should have direct from Toyota. The transmission shifting is WAY better. The only super minor dislike is the jumpiness in parking lots and slow driving - the petal is much more sensitive and more difficult to not look like a jerk pumping the petal to get attention. :)

    Run a tank of premium & see what it does for you. I definitely see a difference from regular to premium.
    If you run 285 (33s) & up you definitely need to regear. Even a tune will not compensate needing gears.
    The setup your running is pretty spot on for a everyday driver thats not going to do hard offroading, best all round setup.

    21 SR, 89 octane only, OTT Medium/Spicy, AWE true dual exhaust, S&B CIA, Eibach Pro-truck stage 2R, Wildpeak AT3 275, u-bolt flip, Wheelers bumpstops, diff drop, cab mount chop, aluminum skids.
    ECT + S2/3 makes it feel like a stadium truck, even on the stock gears. RPMs are lower than what I would prefer during normal driving, and I'd rather not have to constantly paddle up or down to solve the RPM/speed equation, so I'm planning to regear some time next year, probably to 4:88. I love the fact that re-tunes are free and we can tinker with our gears/fuel/tune to get the most out of our trucks- whether you're interested in Smiles Per Gallon or Miles Per Gallon, get the most out of your truck with the OTT tune.

    Just got this done at Westcott Design here in Phoenix AZ. I want to punch myself for not doing it earlier. I should have had it done when I put the 5.29 gears in, but the other shop I went to didn't suggest it. The gear change caused the transmission to not shift in time before the fuel cut off happened. This tune fixed this. Cannot tell you how awesome this is. Also, it's like I have a completely different truck. It has great low-end torque now. I have to get used to it, keep spinning my tires. I can totally light them up now, even with larger tires. Ive noticed much better gas mileage too. I have a 3 inch lift with 33's, but not much more. Just some steps, light bars and ditch lights. But I'm getting easy 20 mpgs all around, both highway and city. Simply the best $450 I've ever spent. If you're in Phoenix, go to Westcott. Fantastic experience with those guys. They also fab many items that, to be honest, is going to get me in trouble with my wife 😮😂. My new candy store

    I HAVE NOT GOTTEN THE TUNE YET: (2018 Tacoma 4x4 Off-road) I am/was one of those people. Huge skeptic! I was afraid of my warranty being voided. I was also paranoid of the dealership updating my factory tune when taking it in for service and “undoing” what I paid to have done. I recently hit 50k, took it in for its 50k service…the trucks shifting & response is more horrible than ever. I drive it with the ECT activated all the time which I don’t feel like I should have to do. When trying to accelerate I feel like I’m always having to dog my truck out to get it to go! I’m over it….I WILL be getting the OTT soon. I’ve been following this topic for quite some time. Thank you for making this vid, just solidifies my decision to get it done.

    • @KDmax
      @KDmax ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you get your truck tuned with OTT they will update first to the latest Toyota software. This prevents the Dealership from overwriting the tune by accident. In regards to warranty: the ECU will still report as stock when the Dealership connects their computers.

    I’ve tried multiple tunes (manual transmission) and ultimately decided I prefer stock. I do firmly believe a regear is a great choice even on stock tires. I would personally like to see this channel regear to 5.29s and share the results. It would drive great on 265/70R17s with the auto.
    I did 5.29s on the manual with both stock size and 255/75R17s and it’s been great. Revs high, performs well.

    @jbhm2654 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I used to be an engine calibrator for an OEM manufacturer. The OEM vs Tuned calibration file might look similar in name (via PN)…but if a dealer really wanted to dig, they would just do a cal compare to the L&G released software for your model year and what’s on your vehicle. If they see variable differences they might ask questions…I’ve never experienced this myself but I’m assuming this would be the process.

    • @nbaldo003
      @nbaldo003 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      only reason for them to look into it would be if something failed, in which case I would reflash to stock. could probably see the flash in the computer history but I doubt they’d check software if the truck doesn’t look too modified. Now if you blow up a second engine/trans they’re definitely going to look into that lol but these engines are extremely well built. It would take a God awful tune and a moron driver to blow up a tacoma powertrain

Everything you mention is exactly what my results where withcthe medium spicy with spicy being ECT engaged . I feel ya on the being a little paranoid about costly changes to our gems but thats life for ya , i cant trust my toyota dealer service since i know they lied to me the other day to get my 10k service done at 7k while i had rear axle recall looked at and adking to look into whinning sound coming from possibly rear or trans when letting off acceleration at road speeds . And general driving . After 2 days i eas told its aggressive tires and normal sounds when i know the difference and its obvious its not the tires , so i consider that being bummed off push me out the door , since they rold me that today before went to get tune if i cant trust that response i checked my oil dip stick and my heart sank when i seen easy visually sized metal shavings on the stick from tip to oil level , wiped on paper towel and put back in pull out and even more . I dipped it in on a cold engine atleastc10 times and everytime had shavings of different sizes . I was so over whelmed i started to shed a tear . I checked oil before dropped it off it was just oil now they change it and im getting this on my stick makes me have to believe it was done on purpose , how else can it happen no acceptable excuse . Not sure how to approach but wish me luck i ts destroying my engine everytime i crank i know that much so a 48k financed with service techs lying and putting metal in my engine hear we go , its like a twilight zone of a black hole i just feel threw its so unbelievable but true . Nice review. I'd be more curious about the more long term effects of any tune. Of course, not enough time has passed for anyone to report. But I will say, when weighing the more likelihood of issues impacting the reliability of a vehicle, electronic alterations I'd suspect more over mechanical alterations, tune versus re gearing. There are historical results searchable with Jeeps and negative long term results. Then again, we're talking Toyota here. Overall, the answers I'm hearing are the same: Does it accelerate better? A: Yes. Does it tow better? A: Yes. Does it still gear hunt? A: YES. And being a 5.29 re gearee, I can confirm these answers.

    Re: Warranty, as far as I understand automotive warranties don't work like other warranties. For most consumer products they can void the warranty if they see you've modified the product, however for an automotive warranty the onus is on the manufacturer to prove that your modification caused the defect.

      Remember the warranty only covers defects. If there are any signs that the engine was pushed beyond normal use or any evidence that the ECM was tampered with they are not under any legal obligation to do warranty work. It would be on the vehicle owner to prove otherwise in a breach of warranty lawsuit.

On cruise control with the radar it searches for gears too much so Brian my OTT guy said use the cruise w/o the radar. Pedal Commander was a no no according to the dealer.

      Can you elaborate on why the dealer discouraged a Pedal Commander? It seems far less intrusive than a tune. I've had a Pedal Commander for about a year. It completely changed throttle response (in a very positive way) for my 2021 Off-Road. I love it for both short and long trips.

      @@gpclark007 the dealer stated with the PC they had numerous customers coming in with engine codes. I didn't ask what the codes were but other U Tube channel viewers were saying the same thing they were experiencing. If you have the tune and then don't like it you can have the truck recalibrate to stock.

    • @gpclark007
      @gpclark007 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottgorman7166 I see. I've not had any engine code conditions. I would think removing the PC would be easier (anyone can install/de-install one) since it's just sitting between your foot throttle and the original cable. Isn't it just mimicking what your foot COULD do? It's not changing anything on your vehicle. Hey, thanks for the feedback though ... good to know/watch out for.

    In terms of gear ratios one possible reason to want to change is not just the sort of performance that a tune would help with but also to lower them for more control off road. The Tacoma comes with fairly high gears from the factory and this makes it nice for the road but off road lower gears might help. All the usual caveats about your specific situation still apply.

    I think Toyota needs to find out what the tune sweet spot is and do this at the factory. Although I'd hate to see these tuners go out of business, it's really not fair to the customer that Toyota has been getting these complaints for so long all while doing nothing to correct it, all while there's a clear solution out there.

      Same, but I wouldn't mind more low-end torque especially in first and second gear. I am however very nervous about this tune affecting longevity. I want 500k miles and 30+ years over better acceleration. With the stick, it is easy to rev it up a bit more and downshift when you need it. Glad to see another MT in here - they are so much more fun to drive everyday!!

    Nice video. If this had existed two years ago, I wouldn't have wasted two years trying to decide if I wanted the tune or not. My tuner is qualified to do Orange virus, kdmax, and ott. I went with ott because when we discussed it, he really wasn't interested in doing any but ott calling it the newest technology. I have a 2018 TRD OR 3.5 liter 4x4 and after owning 6 Toyota trucks and 4 bys previously I was literally hating my 3rd gen. After the tune I'm thrilled! I also agree with pretty much everything you said though my gas mileage went up just over 20% from 14 to 18 if not too much stop and go traffic. Freeway about the same. I think the difference in my case is due to vehicle weight - skids, sliders, winch and bumper, recovery gear, etc. I also have a 2500 plus or minus travel trailer. I did not notice any change in gas mileage when towing, flat or mountainous. Taco mileage just sucks when towing! However the gear hunting is completely gone without the trailer and minimal with it going uphill. So just adding my experience. I also love watching you mechanicing! Now, go hit some trails!

      @KDmax ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have offered KDmax and OTT in the past. If you want to have a safe, reliable and proper verified tune on your truck then there is no better option than OTT. Some tune developers don’t even test a tune on the vehicle it is offered for. Thats a big no go for me.
      With OTT you can rest assured that the people behind it have a deep knowledge about the trucks engine and transmission. They invest in data loggers and analyzing software in order to verify key parameters for a reliable function. Then they take the vehicle onto the dyno for further fine tuning. No short cuts taken.

    Personally I would be really worried about tuning my particular truck 2018 TRD off-road 6-ft bed. The reason I would be worried is I get excellent fuel of economy and my transmission does not hunt for gears. I may have an exceptional Tacoma from the factory so I don't want to fool with it. A bad tank of fuel for me is 23 and I often get up to 26 and that's not on the dashboard that's actual miles and gallons calculated. I very typically get 425 to 450 miles on a tank. So I will leave mine alone. Thank you that was interesting to watch 👍

    When tuners start operating out of brick and mortar shops, then I'll probably give it a shot. What recourse does the customer have should the tune somehow screw up their truck, and the tuner is hundreds of miles away? The claim is that there is no record of this happening, but that doesn't mean it hasn't. If it DOES happen, what then? The idea of tuning sounds great, so why aren't any brick and mortar shops doing it? I'm not trying to be negative, but I'm just posing concerns everyone seems to have. While it looks very tempting I'm still reluctant to fiddle around with my 40K truck.
