    The 3.5l V6 3rd gen Tacoma is a great platform to build your overlanding or offroading rig from... BUT it is a bit down on power... Or power tuning, depending on your view point. Either way, there are a number of modifications and upgrades you can do to improve the power and transmission tuning. Everything from re-gearing to engine tuning. In the end, nothing beats a supercharger. BUT at almost $10k, is the Magnuson worth it? Thats what this review is all about. Lets take a look!

    I'm looking to do the supercharger setup with my 2017 TRD off road. From everyone comments it seems there are other alternatives (ov tune, regearing, etc.) As you stated in your video it's good to use it on the Freeway/Highway areas. I live in California and travel to Oregon doing overlanding with friends. I noticed you got that sweet camper from Oregon so you know the Mountain climb going there and back. I think the supercharger will definitely help especially passing those logger trucks.

    Late to the party, but I wanted to add to the forum. Purchased 2022 Taco 4x4 Trail Edition V6. When I got the truck, I immediately installed a 6inch lift, added rims and tires (295/70R18). Right after, I was frustrated with the lack of horsepower while driving back and forth from Plano to Austin here in Texas. Believe it or not, we have hills and during the commutes I was HATING the truck. It was constantly downshifting on climbs, sometimes 2 gears while trying to maintain 80 mph. Gas mileage was around 9.8mpg. I have done the following: Magnuson SC, K&N cold air intake, Flowmaster dual exhaust, and the pedal commander. I am using the pedal commander adjustments depending on driving conditions. THIS TRUCK IS A BEAST NOW!!! Gas mileage hangs around 12-14mpg. I can live with this. A resounding NO! I wholeheartedly wish I had never put the supercharger on my Tacoma. Power band too small. Can't tune. Too low of a performance increase for the $$$... Yeah that's all relevant. But there's worse...
    Early component failure. Something that many SC vehicles have to contend with is failing idler pulleys. I am about to change mine out for the second time in 5 years because of the chattering whine. It is 💯 embarrassing when a truck you dropped so much coin on sounds like a 1982 Buick LeSabre with original belts at 200K miles starting up on a cold day.
    Also, I burned out my spark plugs at 50K miles to the point of misfires putting me in limp mode. Try changing them.... That SC gets in the way. It's major weekend surgery just to change the dang plugs!
    Don't forget to rebuild your SC nose section every 75K miles! Otherwise you're in for problems regardless of the suggested service interval.
    Better keep 100% on top of all power train fluid services front to back! All of that mediocre power puts extra strain on everything. I can confidently proclaim that I do not expect my Tacoma to last 250K miles like a stock one.
    Lastly, the cost of the SC doesn't stop at $10,000. You will fill your tank more often and every fill up will cost you about $20 more than a stock truck thanks to the "premium only" gas requirement.
    Is the extra power fun? Yes. Is it worth the extra $$$, hassle, and embarrassment? Hell no

  • @LoneScout1
    @LoneScout1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’d never have it any other way. Best done on a manual transmission because the SuperCharger is all about being the “driver, not the passenger”. 5:45 I can't remember where I read this but I saw somewhere that a vent on the high pressure side of the supercharger opens up to let it freewheel so it doesn't sap horsepower from the engine to try and save gas mileage when you're crusing at low throttle.
    I wish they came with a switch that went in one of the blanks to control this feature separately rather than tying it to the ECT button with the transmission so you can have the torque of the supercharger in the low end of the RPM range without the truck having the delayed shift points.

  • @MrTmatthewsphoto

I am not saying our 3.5L with a mild charger will last 350k miles with no issues... but anyone who plans to drive that much needs to expect some issues in general with that much driving regardless of a charger or not. That being said, there is no evidence to suggest the Mag Super Charger is hurting the Toyota's V6. My truck feels great but I also maintain the hell out of it. • @ragerow
      @ragerow ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you, but the factory air intake is technically more of a "cold air intake" because it's a closed system away from the hot air in the engine bay. For whatever reason the open air filters have been called "cold air" intakes... You're literally pulling the hot air from the engine bay. The only benefit you're getting is sucking in more air, albeit, It is warmer air than you would with the stock intake. If you were able to get a system that pulled actual cold air while getting more air intake, that would be the ticket.

    Look, take it from me! It is not worth it! It doesn't add that much power! And it can't change the fact, that Toyota shortened the stroke of this engine! Mainly so it could burn 87 octane fuel, keep the valves clean and deliver excellent fuel mileage with power if needed. Like he said. You have to push into the throttle, to get the power. All short strokers are like that! They have the power, in the upper RPM range. But the transmission tries to keep the engine in the lower RPM range for fuel mileage.

    Yeah I'll be honest, that kind of cost for what you get at the wheels is just not worth it. The projected numbers are cut almost in half when you measure the power gains at the wheels. I put an AFE CAI on my 2023 TRD Off-Road and did the OTT Tune for right around 1000 bucks and my truck feels great! And, like yours, mine is very heavy because it's set up for Overlanding. The OTT Tune even gave me back the mpg's that I lost when I added all of the weight. For 4 grand, I probably would do the supercharger, but for 8-10k, it's just not worth it IMO.

Its not a slow engine. Biggest issue is understanding the auto trans and using it correctly. Having it 2 gears too high and rpm's at 1300 trying to accelerate doesnt work. The ECT button will do it for you without a tune but I use the S mode a lot to lock out 5th and 6th gears in the city or towing.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  ปีที่แล้ว

      S mode doesn’t hold gears. It does to an extent but it will shift for you if it thinks it needs to. Plus the truck doesn’t feel happy at 5-6k rpm. This drivetrain just doesn’t like being revved. It was designed to meet fuel regulations across Toyotas lineup. It allows them to produce the V8 (at the time) of the Tundra. The transmission was engineered to optimize fuel consumption while keeping ok power. It just doesn’t do a good job of that. Hence why people look to tunes and other mods to improve the issue. Nothing will truly solve it though. If you love the Tacoma, you just need to find what you are comfortable with and learn to live with it.

      A tune, gears, eventually SC. Though in California tunes are restricted smog wise. The Magnuson is CARB legal! That’s huge appeal.
      But gears alone don’t solve the problem. Sure helps down low but your spinning more RPM on the freeway and losing top end punch. The band of application in the 3.5 is pretty narrow. The combination of gears and SC make the Tacoma what it should have been from the factory. A platform you can build off of.
      But again, I’m California a tune means you void your warranty and SMOG. So you just need to be careful. The MSC is CARB legal and doesn’t void your Toyota warranty. That’s a big plus!

      It’s hard to say. We aren’t comparing apples to apples. Depends on your weight, aero, elevation, etc. for me I only saw about a 1-2 mpg difference

    How was gas mileage before and after The install . I have a KD max pro tune and 5.29 gears And was thinking of adding this charger

      I think I lost maybe 2 MPG. But gained a more drivable truck

    Hi, do you still own this truck.. if so how has the supercharger held up so far? Advantages/disadvantages? I'm looking at a 2021Taco TRR and it has the Magnuson superchanger installed.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Still own the truck. Have about 20k miles on it since I charged it. It’s been ace. 👍

  • @Mattmazz77
    @Mattmazz77 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    That's crazy, the reason why you would want a supercharger is because the power is there throughout the rpm range. Supposed to come right on. I believe a smaller pulley would help and I don't know if there is a intercooler but if not that would definitely help too.

    Does anyone have experience with the SC on a manual TRD OFFROAD? Does anyone have experience with the supercharger pulling 4 or 5k pounds? The truck is pretty stock

      My 2019 Taco Offroad (automatic), was regeared (5.29), at the same time as the Magnuson install. HUGE improvement. I occasionally pull a 3500 lb. camper trailer in Colorado mountains (7000 to 10,000 ft. elevation). It's easy to blow past an F-150 slowly pulling an Airstream up the hill.

  • @adamsmidkiff1
    @adamsmidkiff1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dang he's added 2000+ lbs of stuff to that truck? That's 50% more weight and 30% more power than stock. Would be more interested to hear how it drives with a supercharger when you haven't added that much weight.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  ปีที่แล้ว

      In hindsight 2000lbs is an over estimate. Probably closer to 1400. But regardless a charger won’t turn this truck into a dragster. Just makes it more capable. I love how my truck feels now. No it’s not super fast. But that ok. I have other vehicles for that type of driving

    No MPG mentions as part of your video???

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s because it’s too subjective. I am seeing about 1-2 mpg less since installing. However it really depends on how you drive. I tend to be more spirited.

      @@PointShiftDrive Thank you! That's helpful. I'm looking for more power to save gas. Not sure I would want to risk 9k in that case.

  • @adrianw3985

    A stock truck is 4400 pounds, is your truck that heavy with all your gear? Are you at the stock 3.91 gears? I want to go 5.29 gears on mine before I do anything else and see how it is. Anyway, thanks for the info.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, my truck is probably closer to 6000lbs as of today. Consider all the armor, bumpers, 35's, gears, camper, drawers, dual batteries, etc
      It adds up!

    • @BigPinger
      @BigPinger 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don't forget that not only will you be filling up a LOT more often, but you will also be paying an extra $20 per fill above regular gas due to the premium gas only requirement. An extra $100+ a month is normal for normal daily driving.

    • @chandlerplante3389
      @chandlerplante3389 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @BigPinger Yeah I run 91 anyways. I know the truck isn't really meant for it but seems to get slightly better mpg and I live in a cold state where the cheap gas gets switched to "winter mix" which is pretty garbage.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, to be fair I don’t think I did a very good job on this video. My truck is heavy, but not quite as heavy as I made it out to be. And honestly, since I made this video, the supercharger is kind of come to life. The truck moves pretty well and it feels a lot more powerful than it did even when I made this video. I’m not trying to justify, the cost of a supercharger but here in California there are no options for turbos
