Ah yes, when I were a lad, we grew up, 12 of us, in a cardboard box in the middle of the road...... Time for me to put on my old man hat today and moan about things notbeing as good as they used to be. But sadly, in this case, I think it is true. This is a lovely watch by Seiko. If you want the same looks today for the same money, no problem. But if you want the same looks and the same spens, then you are paying for it! Cheers, Jody

Ah. Old Seiko. I remeber when things on the dial were aligned........prices were reasonable......the wiggly bits were wiggly but would hold up. On occasion (it was said by some) a Japanese man(he/him/she/her/zer/zey/zem) would astound the worlds watch lovers by coming up with things like the mythical SKX and the Flighty.

Seeing these older Seikos makes me wish I'd started collecting years ago. I definitely feel like I missed the metaphorical boat. I was fourteen years old in the late 1970s when my dad gave me his Seiko 5, which he bought in 1969. That watch took a beating and it's still running and keeping good time. I wish I had more of these older Seikos in my collection. Thanks for another great video.

Sold my SARB033 for more than I paid and replaced it with a Tissot PRX powermatic 80. Absolutely spot on Jody, the best value now often comes from the Swatch group. A presage with a 4r movement and mineral crystal, no thanks Seiko.

Same deal with my JDM SARX013 from 2017. Absolutely gorgeous watch with a 6R movement, amazing textured dial, sapphire and 100m WR. Seems to be fairly rare and the price of pre-owned units has stabilised at around $250 AU above my purchase price. Although I've bought some Seiko's since then that are also outstanding.... so I'm not about to start chiming in with "the good old days". Great review Jody.... thanks.

I have the SPB059, which I bought several years ago for under $1000 AUS. I absolutely love it and will never part with it. Interestingly, TGV did a great review of these models some time ago. They were modelled on the original Seiko Laurel which was used as a railway watch. Great video as usual Jody.

I had the SARX037, basically this watch on a bracelet without the red 12 - was just a great everyday piece. The movement did lose accuracy a bit faster than I’d like, but what a great way to get into watches. I always preferred the Presages with Presage on the dial. I’ve gotten over the Prospex symbol, but still haven’t come back to the dressier line. Great video!

This goes way back but proves your point well, Jody: I stumbled on a 1971 Seiko 6106-6430 UFO in an antique store several years ago. When I did the "Seiko shake" I was shocked to see it start right up, and guess what? I bought it, took it home, and today it STILL performs as well as or better than my Alpinist, my Seiko 5, and my SKX. Plus, the design is killer! Cheers, sir!

Managed to pick up an SKX009 recently (for under SG$400!) and I am blown away by the quality and how well the 7S26 keeps time (+4 s/d - take note 6R35 with your -15 s/d). I'm still a current Seiko fan but it's amazing how high quality a (formerly) $200 watch used to be.

The so-called back-to-front deployant strap and is the more correct positioning of the deployant strap. You want the strap end in the strap holder loops to be facing inwards instead of facing outwards. This is a neater look. Just like you tuck in your shirt ends to present yourself to others neatly instead of showing the shirt ends outside the pants.

Very true, I've added x4 discontinued RECENTLY 7S26 Seiko's and x2 have excessive beat errors x1 which varies from 0m/sec to 8.8. The noise pulses picked up on a computer timegrapher tells these are NOT normal even if they keep time within spec. easily. As to Seiko quality factory mass produced assembled or made in Japan these are of low quality with them being hit or miss. Out of x5 Seiko's I've purchased new this year x3 including x1 7S36 are ok & x2 should never have left the factory 🏭.

8:33 the 6R27 movement in that watch is very different from other 6Rs. other than small date and power reserve indicater, it has a 28800bph escapement rather than the usual 21600bph found in normal 6Rs. hence the pricing.

I got an eBay special untested dead Seiko SQ from June 1978 (4336-8089).
After a new battery, resurfacing the chamfered acrylic crystal, and buffing out the scuffs on the case a bit, it has immediately become one of my favorite watches. And it's kinda some basic day/date three hander quartz, no bells or whistles.
The case is pretty, the crystal is neat, the date window is framed with beveled top and bottom edges, the indices are sharp, the hands are not overly cheap or flimsy, there's white contrast paint on all the indices and hands to help visibility against the highly dynamic dial (an olive oil tan/green fume to black with vertical brushing underneath). Applied logos for Seiko and SQ, screw down caseback, great dimensions, and not a speck of dust or damage anywhere beneath the crystal, and no glue or bad tooling to be seen.
The lume even (albeit only for a couple minutes at best) works after all these years.
They SINCERELY don't make them like they used to.

I still have a Seiko 200m divers watch from the mid-nineties which looks imaculate and still works perfectly. Instead of sapphire or mineral it uses Sapphlex crystal which was used by Seiko at the time. Sapphlex was essentially a mineral crystal with a sapphire laminate coating applied to the surface, so you had the scratch resistance of a sapphire crystal with the shatter resistance of a Hardlex crystal. Any idea why Seiko stopped using it? This seems to be another example of Seikos not being as good as they used to be!

    So - my thoughts
Alpinist new vs old: I like the new one, it has the 6R35 which has the 70 hour reserve and that makes a big difference, I have several of them and the quality is excellent - price wise - yes they are more expensive but compared to other makers was the SARB017 etc underpriced?
My latest Seiko is the SPB053j the greyish blue 62 MAS - I absolutely love it, picked it up for £550 reduced - £200 on a pair of bracelets - a jubilee and an oyster, it easily competes with the Oris 65 and Chris Ward Trident I own and actually, I prefer it to both. So yes, Seiko are more expensive but you can always find them at lower prices.
I have had no issue with quality on the over £500 watches, I have had some issues with the models below this - Turtle in particular.

Thanks for the video. I still have the Seiko Chrono that my girlfriend (now wife) gave me for my birthday back in the mid-90s. It is a compact size and thickness and quite lightweight, especially compared to the Seiko SBTR027 that I recently bought. Seiko seems to be moving backward as you are not the only reviewer to notice that, in recent years, their prices have gone up and their quality has gone down. I saw a YT video by a luxury watch dealer who proclaimed Grand Seiko as being the next big thing in luxury watches and predicting they would increase in value so perhaps Seiko is putting their energies into developing their luxury line and just milking their cash cow of non-luxury watches. I'd buy more Seikos if they would get their act together. For example, I like the look of the new Seiko Solar Speedtimers (SSCxxx), but for what they are asking ($700USD), shouldn't they have a titanium case? My Casio LCWM-100TSE is solar powered and has a titanium case and bracelet for under $200.

Dealing mainly with 60s and 70s Seikos with occasional 80s models, and ever so rarely something like an SKX, I have seen a progression of money saving assembling strategies Seiko has used over the generations. With the 7S26 and further being junk, along with the quality control issues of a lot of modern models, I’ll stick to the vintage stuff. The old 6xxx and 7xxx series of dress watches, 5 models and divers are superb. Yeah, the lume sucks, but the watch doesn’t.

Agree 100%. I've worked on dozens of mid 1960s-early 70s Seiko movements (I used to live in Japan so they are cheap and easy ot come by) and they were MUCH better made than modern movements. The 1963-68 62XX series are my personal favorites, and are absolute works of art in terms of quality construction. I have several 6218 and 6206-driven "Weekdaters" and similar variants, which I absolutely love.
The 'modern' 7s26 stuff and everything thereafter are good solid 'agricultural' movements, but plastic cogs do nothing for me. Kind of funny hoe hear Jodie say that a 2017 watch is 'old' :) But he does have a point, they seem to be going in a very weird direction...

@@davidwarren9204 yeah, I clicked the video expecting to see some vintage Seikos. So that surprised me a little too.
Those 6xxx series movements took a lot of ideas from Swiss assembly and quality. Even down to the way the screws sit in the bridges or cocks before you screw them in. The quality of the steels used for those bridges and cocks is far superior. The way all the parts fit, even on decades old worn out movements still have better qualities with end shake and tolerances. Of course, ignoring barrel arbor holes requiring some tightening up.

I have an SKX, Turtle, and Samurai and I love them. With that said I am so completely down with Seiko and their greed. I just searched the internet and they released 163 new watches this year. And, as you mentioned, with reduced specs. I'll stick with my well speced classics.

Ever since the classic SNK809 was discontinued, prices have risen to unreasonable amounts! I flipped mine since I came to loathe the lack of hacking and hand-winding and the poor WR of 3 ATM. Its successor, the SPRG27, comes with the necessary improvements - but gone is the neat size and design of the SNK at an equally high price point. I don't find the value in Seiko anymore, sadly!

Great video! Seiko, in their part of the world, has stiff competition, and they have had to cut corners, for sure. That is why I would/will bypass Seiko and go Hamilton. That being said, my new Seiko SBSA041 is superior to anything in the 200-300 price range. Its my favorite, up to 4k.

I have an older Presage Cocktail time in my collection, and it is the only Seiko I own. I do not like Seiko's new direction with charging higher prices and not really getting much in return. The older Seiko's were a much better value. The dial is stunning, the 4R movement is fine, and at $275 it was a killer deal from Amazon.

I agree old Seiko's were better. Lately I have been into old Seiko 5's, 37mm case 11mm thick, hugs wrist and the 7S26 is darn accurate in my experience. I especially like the black military dial versions. Been wearing them on the Tropic 20mm Black, which is actually a 19mm and works magnificently and is buttery soft.

At the end of the day I buy a watch because I like the look of it and how I think it will wear on me personally. I don't buy a watch because of the movement, crystal material, whether it has a signed crown, solid end links, etc. Don't be put off by a watches specs as long as you are not getting properly ripped off! Just enjoy your watches. We all know there is a huge mark-up on watches in general especially the established brands we can see that from the micro brands and sale time discounts. However unlike most so called "Swiss Made" brands if you are prepared to wait you can usually find most Seikos for a good price in the end. I bought my zen garden for £225, if I remember correctly I think it was from Goldsmiths, it has a sapphire crystal, solid links, solid end links, and a totally unique dial and indices. It runs at +6/7 seconds a day, I'm not going to go swimming in it so what's to get upset about. All my 4Rs run at about this, a couple are even virtually spot on only +2/3 seconds a week. By the way, H Samuel have the "Martini" Cocktail time currently at £200 not my cup of tea but an excellent buy for someone.

I own several Seikos: 2 SZSBs (A white dial, and a black/gilt dial), an SRPG Field Watch, an SRPE "Dress KX", and a Prospex Turtle. I've been impressed with them all, with one noted exception - the brand new turtle I purchased came with the notorious misaligned chapter ring. It is so annoying paying near $400 for that BS that Seiko let's out the door. But, I did...sigh.
I will be adding a saphire, so I'll have my watch shop correct that issue. Still, what a pisser...I cuss that damn turtle watch every time I put it on.
In any event, outside of that, I've been very happy with the 4R movements. I'm considering purchasing a watch with a 6R movement but have heard many mixed reviews on them so I'm in a holding pattern for the moment.
Oth, I need to add a nice chronograph to my collection and am considering the Seiko Speedtimer. I like the look and size of it. I love Seikos, but my brand new turtle has left a bad taste in my mouth. Are there any QC issues that you're aware of with regards to the speedtimer?
Anyway, recent subscriber but have really enjoyed your videos. Nice watch you presented here. Kind regards, and much respect to you Sir.

I tried flipping a deployant clasp "backwards" and I won't go back! Japanese traditions aside, it's a case of form following function. It moves the wad of excess strap and keepers out of the way, and is much more comfortable for typing and desktop work.

Jody, I agree with you. The SPB039 was the one that I didn’t pull the trigger on but should have. As others have said, it is a homage to the original Seiko Laurel from 1913. The most current iteration is the SJE075J1. It has the newer 6L35A movement, A-R coated box sapphire crystal over a porcelain dial and measures 39.5mm x 46.9mm x 10.9mm with 20mm lugs. But the price is a choking $3,300.00 USD.

It's not overpriced considering it's basically a grand Seiko with our grand on the dial. It might be worth actually holding an SJE model before regurgitating a meme.
When you take into account discounts to be found on SJE models they are a bargain. My SJE079 was on offer for £1800 with a beautiful shippo enamel dial. Nothing in the same price range competes against it for finish and artisan craftsmanship

    • @acftmxman
      @acftmxman 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@pk1342 While I appreciate your opinion, I’m sorry to say I do feel it is overpriced for what you get. There is no denying that Seiko makes the best dials in the business. And with your discount, you still paid $2276.00 USD for a watch that should be price below $1000.00 USD for what you get and what Seiko used to give you before they started swimming upmarket. I am a big Seiko fan and they make up most of my collection. But comparing to what micro brands give you and the economies of scale that Seiko operate, they could do better on the price. Money is an asset that should be used wisely.

@@acftmxman the dial of my watch is made using an extremely delicate enameling technique, which results in multiple failed dials before a successful one is even made and it is hand made by an artisan enamel expert at ando cloisonne.
Please show me a watch for less than $1000 with a cloisonne dial.
The SJE079 provides a cloisonne dial, zaratsu polishing, crocodile strap and a high quality movement at $2000. If you want anything on this level from the Swiss your paying triple to quadruple. And I don't know a microbrand that does cloisonne dials for sub 1000.

I am slightly divided on this one, I agree that prices are going up whilst QC and specs seem to have gone down which is never defendable, however outside the enthusiast market, and let’s be honest, there’s more of them than us, Seiko stock is still high enough to be able to get the sales at these prices. I think it’s a shame, my SNK805 is evidence that you can make a decent watch at affordable prices, but that isn’t where the big profits are.
