    Finally a man who make a car review and he refers to the cost of the car from all the point of views. This is really rare. Well done you helped a lot of people with these informations.
    Extreamly great content and explanation from the technical view.

    I have owned 2 BMW 320d M sport coupes. An E46 and E92 (my current car). I have been happy with both. They are not perfect and my E92 has had a few issues; The most expensive being a failure of the voice control module. I got a used one off ebay for £140 saving me a lot of money as a new one was £400. Running costs are not that bad. The highest running costs are the tyres, with a set of 4 Bridgestones costing over £600. My cars, mainly due to my 20 mile commute, average about 12,000 miles between services.

    Looking forward to seeing more car reviews! Love the real world approach to the review, along with your own anecdotes. I'd love to see your opinion on a couple of the cars I've owned. I passed my test aged 20 in August 2019, since then I've owned a VW Polo 2010 (60PS, 1.2) which was sadly written off in a high speed collision on the M62 (happy to provide more info on that if you're interested) and I've now purchased a Ford Mondeo 2010 Titanium Facelift (140PS, 2.0 TDCI) the power jump and size of the car were too things that took some adjusting too, though the low down diesel pull makes light work of the hills that my old Polo struggled with.
    As a side note, the Polo had Hill Assist whereas the higher spec Mondeo does not, this is something I find myself missing.
    Keep up the great vids!

    With regards to running costs, if you buy a premium car that was say 40-50 grand when new, if you've bought that car later on for say 5-10 grand, you need to remember the repair bills still equal that of a 50 grand car.

    In regards to that ‘tech can also make it more complicated’ statement. I’m driving a car with a lane departure assist system at the moment and it is one of the most annoying things ever. Want to merge in turn ever so slightly before the lane marking ends because you’ve spotted a good space or merge onto an empty motorway at 3am without signalling? Well, be prepared to fight the car and wrestle with the steering wheel unexpectedly to do so, it has tried to steer me away from my intended position far more times than it has stopped me veering out of lane unintentionally. I don’t know about anyone else but i’ve got these things in my head that allow me to see where I am, I think they’re called ‘eyes’? I just tend to use those personally… Some of these driver assistance features (like that gesture control) really can make driving more difficult

    Brilliant.
    Also as the other message said, some corsa’ a, fiesta type cars would be good too.
    You have more tech than me, but even so, it’s more like driving a computer than a car. That might be an issue for some people.
    My brother in law has a merc with manual speed limiter - which is set in a computer menu. He doesn’t understand computers or menus.....he got that set at 40mph and managed to leave it active while back on the main screen. Found himself on a 60 mile journey with a max speed of 40. He thought the engine had gone wrong - took it to the garage 🤣🤣🤣
    In the old days it would take the form of a switch or plastic dial control.

    5:55 😳 I learned the hard way putting cheap tyres on my first car. One of them failed when mounting a kerb, also felt scary on a wet fast road. They're also a false economy as they shred through tread. I've just swapped the original Michelins for new ones on my current car - they did 75,000 miles and the tread was still legal, probably had a couple of months left in them.

  • @ClaireYunFarronXIII

    Very awesome review, Ashley. Great points you brought up all throughout, and I like the formula you used. I think this is my favourite review of this car. That says a lot because everyone and their mother reviewed this. I really do love this car, though I prefer its main competitor from Stuttgart, lol. 😅
    Michelin tyres are awesome. Truly my favourite tyres that I have used. Highly recommend. My next car coming soon will have them as well.
    For me, when buying a car, it is important to understand it. The manufacturers are public about what are in their cars, so research can be done. Most people go on to buy cars *just* because they like how it looks or for its 0-100km time that they will NEVER use, or even buy a car just because of its horsepower number. For me, that is silly. I have seen the results of that. People buy the car and are not happy with it because they somehow did not know that cars are more than just looks and 0-100km times. They are attracted to what is on paper instead of taking it to the real world to see if those things on paper hold up to their satisfaction. It may look great on paper, but will be like a paper cut in reality. Matter of preference.
    I would be interested to see what you think about the new 3-Series and 4-Series (and the M variants) that have come out for 2021. I think I would be more interested in what you think of the new 7-Series. I love that car.
    Cheers. 🙂👌

    Safety might be something to say a few words about. Obviously, when buying your first car, for example, you're probably only going to be able to afford a used one. Older cars are, in general, less safe than new ones. So the question becomes how much of the modern safety equipment you're willing to compromise on and do without. It's worth keeping in mind when buying.

    • @Jasontvnd9
      @Jasontvnd9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Things like AEB and Lane Assist are luxury's that your first car probably won't have and neither it should , These are good safety systems but new drivers can get to used to them and a reliance is formed.

    I'm getting 4 (nice, Bridgestone) tyres put on my little 20 y/o Yaris. £208 *for all four* including fitting. Cheap econoboxes are financial freedom. Admittedly I've ordered the tyres myself and am paying a garage to fit them which does help cost wise.

    It may not be as cost-friendly as an econobox, but it more than makes up for it.
    The comfort, the looks, the thinking that went into it, the .. everything.
    Thanks, Ashley!
    Not entirely sure about RWD cars, guess the premium tires do pay off, especially when the weather is nasty.
    I am a 'cheapskate'. I run a FWD, got some adequate (middle class) rubber fitted. But if I were to have a newer-ish car, I would not be thinking; better the contact, better the ride (in every way).

    1:05 Well, I don’t like the new grills on the BMWs. They don’t look as recognisable as they used to and they’re either too large, too blacked out or both. I like the side profile and the ride height and black is always nice on a BMW. But I must admit I prefer how the older BMWs look. I’m biased as I own the older e90 version - but I do feel like BMWs don’t attract me like they used to.

    I've looked at the 3 series myself as my current car is starting to cost me more than it's worth. I've got my eye on the updated 2019 Jaguar XE though, there's just something about the look of it.
    My main dilemma is whether to go saloon as most of my mileage will be motorway commuting, or get the larger f-pace SUV as I go camping once or twice a month and it will be more practical for throwing everything in, or even converting the back into a mini-camper van style setup for car camping when I'm away.

      Yeah, and the classics get overrated just because they now cost a lot. Too many vloggers rate a car by how much it costs these days. And many cars these days are too fast to enjoy on the public roads. True, they handle well to get you out of trouble, but the power needs excessive caution and a good deal of experience that not everyone has.

It also has 110bhp which is plenty enough for going from 30-60 and also good for going from 50 - 70 and 7 years later its been super reliable not much has gone wrong with it and very happy with it, I named it "Hermione the hyundai" lol

    @grahamnutt8958 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A thoroughly enjoyable and well thought out review there Ash.
    So many points to consider that it is almost impossible to know where I should start 🤔
    Probably the most important one is the Insurance costs. I know for sure that Liverpool, Manchester, the North East and anywhere in the M62 corridor are amongst the most prohibitive in the UK. Compare that to East Kent - we get off rather lightly.
    The next point I would consider is what the vehicle is going to be used for; and annual mileage.....
    For example:
    Below 12k per annum - petrol;
    Above 18k per annum - diesel.
    I'm leaving hybrid/electric out of the equation due to not having a sufficient knowledge of these.
    Also consider that town miles do not require a lot of power where Motorway miles would sway me towards a larger capacity engine.
    Now, to throw out an idea that an increasing number of people are considering..... Classic cars.
    The maintenance is high and the fuel costs alone on mine would be a non-starter for most but it's worth looking at Ford - the mark I and II Escort are expensive but the III, IV, V and VI are definitely out there - affordable to buy plus they tend not to depreciate in ££.
    Some are becoming classified as 'Modern Classic' so the prices do seem to be going up. The benefit of a classic is that you pay zero road tax once its 30 years old. Sure, there are downsides but it really sorts out the people with a degree of competence from the ones who don't... driving aids are virtually non-existent.
    I can get you access, once mine is back on the road again, to at least two relatively modern and affordable vehicles for review;
    54 plate Toyota Corolla and a 60 plate Nissan Note (unless one of them gets changed beforehand).
    Stay safe everyone 👍

      @@DaveDVideoMaker I thought so too but they are absolutely mint to drive, I have an MK 7.5 which I do my advanced driving lessons in and the handling is actually really impressive. My instructor/observer said it was a brilliant first car, super reliable. Everyone who's seen it loves it too but I think that's down to the "deep impact blue" colour though haha. Of course there are things I dislike about it but compared to a Kia Rio I drove the other day, it just feels like a different class! Pre face lift fiesta's are uncool to me but everyone has personal preferences ☺️

      @@ashley_neal Thanks a lot for answering! This made me very happy because I am waiting on delivery of a RWD car for myself. I've been scared off from buying a RWD car for years by people telling me that it's difficult/dangerous to drive. You have no issues, and all your pupils are learning in RWD so this made it clear that if treated with respect and driven properly in the correct way, it's just as easy/safe as any other car.

    Sytner pricing is horrendous. My Audi garage is Sytner. But why don’t you get a service plan? My Audi was £384 for 2 years compared to over £520 if paying ad hoc. I could make a 45 min video on how they’ve treated me over the years and I still keep going back purely due to it’s location and free MOT’s. 😂 To explain - the service tech’s have been awesome. It’s the lies from the front desk I have issues with.

    On the subject of cars, I hear little criticism of car design and a marketing style which seems to encourage poor driving standards so I'd like to add my bit here. One of the things that has increased enormously in recent years is the all pervasive tyre noise. This is partly due to low profile wide tyres but is also connected with chassis design. Every cricketer knows there is a sweet spot when batting but when the ball connects with the bat too high or too low there is a jarring effect. The same applies with the location of the suspension to the chassis. Unfortunately this would imply using a shorter wheelbase which would take away some of the interior space of the typical small car; however, the upside would be less need for power steering on small cars. In my days - the 60s - even large family saloons didn't have power steering! I would like to add here that without power steering, I believe there would be less damage to road surfaces with a consequent shorter wheelbase and non low profile tyres and also less tendency to overreact in some high speed situations where a car can quite easily go out of control. Finally consider the term "Sports Utility Vehicle", how absurd is that? I like sports cars, but sports cars should be just sports cars with good handling, light weight and a feeling for the road. Having got this off my chest, I do like your car!

Tyres on it are not too costly either for a driver's car, they are not super wide, that is not what this car is about. Also looking at a Renault Sport Clio 200.

    The new 320d has MHEV technology, so the new 320d has no manual gearbox. The only 3 Series to remain to have a manual gearbox is the 318d, but you can have this with an automatic as well.
    The rest of the range is automatic.
    Keep in kind guys, this was bought in 2019 before BMW introduced mild hybrid technology in the 3-Series.

    Lovely car but I have to disagree on performance and also the engine noise. I tested a 320d and the engine was loud, noisy and distracting. And the performance felt v average. I then drove a 530d and the difference was night and day - so much nicer.
    Still a great car though, but the 6 cylinder engines BMW make are so much nicer

    Definitely a nice car, but a bit rich for my pocket. I did once set out with an aim to buy a BMW (a few years back) but hit a bit of a wall with some of the running costs, and unfortunately, as I asked around and spoke to a few people, the overriding thing to put anyone off was the negativity from so many - "Oh, you're joining the prick brigade, eh?" was the most prominent. Okay, you get good and bad in every make, but why so many have the daggers out for BMW drivers is a bit beyond me.
    Anyway, while I was "Ummin' and Ahh-ing" I was tempted by a Ford Galaxy, but again, ran into a lot of tales of woe about things that broke off, or just gave up working, and the price, bearing in mind I'm talking second hand, was pushing on to Beemer territory.
    Then along came the Volvo, oh dear, a sweet, innocent, easy going Volvo, but it ticked all the right boxes, all except for road tax, which is astronomical by comparison with some other marques, but as I saw it, what I save on other costs easily made up for the road tax - 40 to 45 mpg on a decent run (2.5 litre engine), ordinary tyres, at ordinary prices, insurance (comprehensive) is a few shades below your BMW and servicing is way cheaper, but sweet innocent Volvo? Not when you nail the throttle! Even so, you still get a lot of negative comments about 'wardrobe wagons' 'tin tortoises' 'old fart's mobile' etc - But, you know what, I like the car, so I'll take the flack, I can afford it, and that's what's important because a badly maintained car is a menace to the rest of us, and if a particular marque absorbs every penny you have, just to keep it rolling, what happens when big ticket items need attention? Well I guess they go by the wayside, as you alluded to in your comment about a high end car, and "Baldy tyres". It pays to get what fits your budget, and what sits comfortably under your bum! - It's always going to be a compromise.
    I shall look forward to seeing what comes up in your reviews. I wonder if that might include a Volvo. . . . . . . . . . ?
