I paid a deposit for my 35mm APO on release day but after watching this video, im even more desperate to get it! Great video, as always and thank you for all the effort in making this informative and entertaining video.
Excellent and comprehensive presentation, though I would like to see the M lenses described in terms of M gear -- exclusive use of the M11 body and the M11 monochrome, comparisons to other M lenses -- rather than so much SL2 crossover in which I question whether M11 shooters have any interest whatsoever. For example, rather than going on and on about the SL2 and the SL lenses, I would have rather seen the time spent with the M11 and the M11 monochrome and on comparing the 35APO F/2 to the 1.4FLE, the revered v4 summicron and the vintage, immortal v1 Summicron 3.5/1:2. I get it, you love the SL2, but I doubt any M11 shooter will be interested in the heavier, larger camera or its much heavier, larger lens line up. The presentation was by far the best on the net I have seen. Keep up the excellent and informative work. There is no substitute for anecdotes and empirical observations. I personally found all the charts of little interest. Never have taken a picture of a brick wall. Love the architecture, the street shooting, the beautiful landscapes, colors, use of bokeh, composition and so on. Exquisite examples and professional photography advice. Really appreciate all the hard work you put in to making such a difficult project run so smoothly and effortlessly. Many thanks!
Is the 35 apo better than the 50 apo in terms of lens design and performance? Which one is more suitable for travel and street photography in your opinion??
Yet an another excellent episode! Since you asked about if people would like to see more episodes for just one lens, I'd vote for a dedicated episode of the Leica 90mm f/2.2 Thambar-M lens. I'm saving up for it, and would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Interesting idea. I think that while the S35 is a wonderful lens, the APO SL would come out on top in terms of absolute performance. The S lenses are more of a balance between the biting sharpness of the SL optics and the naturalness of M glass.
19:25 I assume this is in readiness of weather sealed M11, perhaps. And the hood looks like it is also designed to be used in mild/average adverse weather conditions as it is more closed for protection. I would be less inclined to use a UV filter to protect the lens with that hood on.
I have watched this video several times ...another great lens episode! I was lucky to purchase a 35mm APO Summicron lens earlier this year and am loving the wide angle detail that it renders and still discovering it's other fine attributes. Curiously, in the new updated Camera Raw 14, I was hoping they might provide a "lens profile" for this lens, but as far as I can tell, it has NOT yet been included. Is there a lens profile in Camera Raw that you might suggest using for this lens in the meantime or is better to make manual adjustments assuming some are needed until Adobe includes it? As always, thank you for your time and replies.
As impressive as the APO is, I preferred the FLE for picture making. It was close enough stopped down to landscape apertures that nobody would notice a difference, but gives 2x more light gathering ability for when it’s required. Overall, more versatile. Was I seeing slightly more saturated color out of the FLE as well? Either way, both great lenses but FLE is where I’d put my $. Both cream of the crop optics. Like trying to decide between a Ferrari and Lamborghini
No luck in getting this APO anytime soon, I bought the APO 35 mm Summicron SL and switched my pre-order to the new Summilux which should be easier to get from my sources.
If Leica gave awards ( say an 'APO' ) for content about their products, you two should get the first two awards !! Great presentation ! Magnificent job ! Looking forward to you letting us know when the Leica APO Summicron 21mm f/2 Asph. will be released. ;-)
Wow, thank you! If you're referring the the 21mm APO-Summicron-SL, then hopefully this year. If you're looking for a 21mm APO-Cron for the M.... let's just add it to our long term Leica wish list. :)
@@RedDotForum Yes I meant the SL, and ,yes, I'd add a 21mm M APO-Summicron to my hopeful list as well. I'm thrilled at the possibility for the 21mm SL in '21 ! Thanks !
A question slightly of topic. I’m already invested in the L mount system, S1R, and want to bridge into the Leica system by purchasing a Leica L mount lens initially. I’ll probably play safe initially with a 50 or 35 but would also consider a short zoom lens. However, i’m slightly caught up in the ‘which one’ dilemma, any guidance would be most welcome as a nube to Leica.
Of course! While high resolution digital is certainly more critical, the look of a lens will absolutely come through on film. Keep in mind that most of Leica's history of lens development has been in the pre-digital era.
Thanks for all of these informative videos. Being new to Leica I'm obsessed with these videos I am curious is there are any image examples of the difference between the 35mm Lux ASPH 11874 vs the FLE 35mm Lux?
I enjoy watching your Leica talks and the dog is wonderful to see .Is the dog a golden retriever? last year I went to the Leica store and purchased the Leica D-Lux 7 as I hope to tour Norway & Sweden and the camera would be great for travel. To my surprise I take the Leica with me more then my D850. What a great camera. After seeing the images coming out D-Lux , my neighbor went to the Leica store with me and she came home with a black D-Lux 7. Now she loves her Leica also. Could you do a Camera talk on the D-Lux and all the features that can be set up in this camera?
Excellent video again, guys. Quick check, were the sharpness tests done on an M10 or SL2? Some M-lenses behave better on SL’s than others (e.g. corner sharpness), and generally the bigger the lens, the better SL-performance? Wondering how that is for the APO-35, which is quite small.
Thank you so much for this! It has answered all of my preexisting question. Unfortunately, it has raised a new one. The image you took with the apo m at the closest focus distance, what other m lens, at its closest focus distance, would give a similar composition?
Nothing in the M lineup has this high a magnification natively. You'd need to utilize the Macro-Adapter-M with other lenses to achieve similar results. Check out our macro episode that we did recently for more info on that.
28 and 35 are definitely different focal lengths that will offer unique perspectives. Both lenses offer exceptional quality. The 28 is obviously wider and has a stop faster aperture. The 35 APO is unique with it's close-focus ability and is physically more compact. Just depends what you're after.
28 lux is a beautiful lens and it could easily be your only 28 lens; the look at 1.4 is incredible and stopped down is very sharp you can’t go wrong with it at any given level.
Video @ 2:08:29 "You can actually mount the Summarit" - Huh? - But the hood isn't lined up to the TDC of the lens. If indeed Josh did fully screw down the Summarit hood, it doesn't look to be lined up to a camera body's configuration...
I just wish Leica UK would hurry up and deliver to my dealer, where I am #1 on the queue for the APO. I actually prefer the older Summilux ASPH to the FLE with the huge proviso "if you can find a good one".
@@johnkasianowicz6536 Purple fringing from very hidh edge contrast. Seems to be a characteristic of the FLE lenses, 50 ASPH Summilux etc. The lower edge contrast of the earlier ASPH 35 Summilux avoids this.
