These videos are incredibly helpful and enjoyable to watch. I originally discovered them from the M11 talk and then noticed the video about 50mm lenses, right as I was researching 50mm lenses. I've been photographing with a pre-ASPH 50mm Summilux-M from the 1960's for awhile and wanted to find something more suitable for landscape and interior photography with edge to edge sharpness at the 50mm length. Based on your videos, I went with the Summarit-M 2.4, it's exactly what I was looking for and probably would have overlooked it in favor of a Summicron v4 or v5. Since then I've made a few different lens purchasing decisions that I probably would not have made otherwise, based on your dicussions and I could not be happier. Keep up the great work!

Enjoyed the live broadcast! 50s are like potato chips, you can’t have just one. Glad I snagged a Summarit 50 f2.4 silver chrome like new at a discount. I was surprised to learn its the second sharpest 50 but I always learn something from you guys. Some years ago I purchased an M3 from Ken Hansen and it came with a dual range 50 and goggles. I also have a 50 Summilux. I have a couple of other focal lengths but there is something about 50
With regards to the 2.8 elmarit; it’s a very low element lens which means a very different esthetic. I kinda think the discussion veered from this lens because it’s not expensive, fast or with exotic glass.
This lens does produce incredible images; it’s super small and light weight. And since it’s a 2..8 it’s much easier to focus. Unless there is a strong compelling reason to go faster than f2 of a cron; this lens is fantastic. You can really do wonders with this lens on an L mount body with a helicoid adapter and now you have close focus as well. For about 600 dollars you can find this lens and it outperforms visually so many modern autofocus optics.
Enjoyable presentation, thanks. “Liked,” when I first viewed it, some time ago. The Summilux-M 50mm ASPH was the lens that lured me into adding the Leica M system, almost five years ago, and remains my favorite. I have, since, added two earlier versions of 50mm Summicron, and a collapsible Elmar-M 50mm. Each has its place, and its use cases. (Each was acquired pre-owned, in wonderful condition, for a reasonable price.)

Thanks guys for another insightful, informative, and entertaining session. Very relevant to me since I'm in the market for my first 50mm Leica lens (I shoot mostly using a 35mm right now). While the lens discussion was terrific, the star of the show for me was the BP MP and BP lens. I'm so glad that Josh snuck that in. I'm a film guy so that camera really took my breath away. I have a BC M-A and have almost considered buying an MP just for the black paint finish! To a sane human being that likely sounds crazy, but it probably makes perfect sense to this crowd :)

Andrew, no doubt that the black paint finish is absolutely stunning. It's a shame I have to send that lens back to its owner, but I am grateful we were able to show it off on air.

At one point in the discussion it was stated that the perfect team of normal lenses was the noct .95 plus the apo and that put quite a smile on my face. Those are the 50s I chose. I'm not rich, but a couple years ago a hefty lawsuit went my way and I went from shooting an obsolete Sony bridge camera (F-717) to shooting the M10 with 10 Leica lenses spanning the focal length range. It took 2 years to get that silly look off my face, and right about when the ohmygod factor wore off, my M10 Monochrom arrived from Miami. If I keep repeating "it's just a camera" long enough, my photos might eventually look as amazing as the ones I used to shoot with the battered old Sony.

Hi David/Josh, seems the 50 lux asph black chrome designed with the exact similar design with vintage 50 lux v1 that to use the filter together with its lens hood, you will need the vintage Leitz 43mm slim-cut filter (code 13206) which is extremely rare for the black version. The filter works very well with my 50 lux black chrome with hood attached.
I bought an M9P with a silver 50mm Summilux ASPH in 2020. It’s such a beautiful lens. The rendering is incredible.
Absolutely it is a little bit heavy though i prefer the APO summicron but I would say they are different and both are great i wish i could own both but I settled for the summicron

I expected more conversation around the 50mm Summilux, especially how much praise you both gave the 35mm Summilux. First question for both of you, if there was a 35mm Summicron APO would you take that over the 35mm Summilux? Assuming all things come across from the 50 Summicron APO.

regarding the 50lux blk chrome. THERE IS a filter that will fit the lens and the hood on. but its rarer than hens teeth. its a Leica 43mm #13206 UvA in BLACK. it took me a while to find this. and it cost around almost $400 if you find one now. Found mine in HK. Back then i bought it for faaar less.

You have taken a subject that could be quite clinical and boring if in the wrong hands and made it interesting, informative and humorous. You work well together.
An additional thank you to the staff and especially you David for your extremely in depth articles on the Leica systems. I am not a Leica owner as yet but these Camera Talks and the articles on Red Dot Forum are incredibly helpful.
After seeing that camera and lens combination in black paint that Josh held up, is there any chance of Leica offering the M10-R in black paint with the white Leica script on the top plate as well as some modern M lenses in black paint? It is a beautiful combination. If you have any sway with the brass in Germany please put in a request.

As we've stated on this channel before, we are not privy to Leica's future product plans, and generally avoid speculating about "what's next" since we're having a blast with the current Leica product portfolio. I shoot with a vintage 50mm cron, but suffice it to say, I think the Summicron is the best and most classic 'all around lens' ever designed. "Desert Island" type lens.
When it comes to 50mm M lenses, it's hard to beat the APO. You won't be disappointed!
Video @ 18:44 "it's faster than f/1" - In the discussion they talk about difficulty to produce, focus DOF & Leica's quality, but what's extraordinary is that at f/1, you're basically at the equivalent light level/exposure 1 to 1 with the light striking the front of the lens vs. the film/sensor plane ! - At f/.95 it's actually MAGNIFING the intensity of light to the 'plane'❗
Video @ 37:14 "the Dual-Range" - I have to say that you 'kinda' skipped over this iconic lens. For YEARS this lens (up to that time) held the title with many photography magazines as the sharpest lens they had ever tested❗ - It was the resolution KING for many years; so why just a 'quick' mention?
Video @ 1:31:00 "you can actually have this modified" - 😫 Never, never never EVER kill the collectability and providence of this amazing lens❗
It's only original once, plus they don't make them any more ! - Geesh, if anyone is contemplating this, just sell yours & get a non-DR unit; you won't lose ANY money...

This lens weighs a whopping 37.8 oz (1070g) vs. the APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH at only 10.6 oz / 300 g - The incredible performance along with the size and weight advantage, is another reason for this jewel-like lens's UBER high cost...

1:31:40 - Could you explain the exact parameters by which the DR will damage a modern M? For instance, if you mean merely that one should not go into the close-focus range with the lens attached, then I could avoid doing that with relative ease. But if the issue is something like, "don't go closer than 1.25 meters" (something more specific and harder to avoid), then once I get a digital M I would consider having DAG do the modification.
Which 50 would you recommend for use exclusively on an M3 using Ilford HP5 pushed to 1600, all around one and done lens for every day all things, travel, family snaps, everything?
The basis of any 50mm collection or if you just want one is the Mandler 50f2 v4/5. The Summilux definitely shouldn’t be the first one you get.

I'm a proud owner of a Summarit 50mm F/2.5 which I love for all the same reasons you mentioned. I'm thinking of adding the Summarit 35mm F/2.5 to my collection or the Summicron 35mm F2. What would I be missing out on if I went with the Summarit? I figured if I did go Summarit, I would do the 2.5 version so I can keep my filter size the same as my 50mm 2.5. Would you say the differences between the 35mm Summarit vs Summicron are generally the same as the differences you mentioned between the 50mm Summarit vs Summicron? I watched the whole 35mm episode too btw, but no one really asked this question on that episode. Hence asking now. haha. thanks!
Nick, thanks for the kind words and we are looking forward our next show too. The best part, if you ask me, about the Summarit-M 35mm f/2.5 is the performance you get for the price. Sure it won't have the "magic" of a Summicron wide open, but it's light, compact, fast focusing and tack sharp. I'd say my comments on the 50mm Summarit versus Summicron hold true for 35mm as well. If going for the Summarit allows you to continue to expand your kit, versus putting all of your budget into one lens to go for a Summicron, I say grab the Summarit and keep building.

We actually addressed this very topic in our Q episodes. The short answer is that no, a cropped 28mm will not offer the same image as a native 50mm.

1:39:01 Instead of a rubber band, you can also use a strip of dymo tape. It's thick enough and you can get it in black.

Hi, if I use the Noctilux with an SL, do I need to use a filter or the shutter speed takes care of that? Thanks
No need. The SL has an electronic shutter for speeds over 1/8000th, meaning you can shoot wide open without an ND filter in bright light.
Does the 50 nocti have the same lens coatings as the 50 APO? Like does the nocti reduce or eliminates CA same as the APO? Just curious since Peter karbe designed both.
Lens coatings help to minimize reflections and improve contrast. Chromatic Aberration (CA) is controlled using special glass types, such as those with anomalous partial dispersion. The 50 APO-Summicron is a true Apochromatic lens design, while the 50mm Noctilux is not. Same father - very differently behaved children. ;)

Hey David and Josh. The Leitz M mount 0.8 lenses don't seem to have many reviews on line and it would be interesting to hear more about them, hopefully from you guys on one of your future episodes. How do the 0.8 Leitz lenses compare with the Leica M mount lenses. The Leitz website describes the 0.8 lenses as having a more analogue look and that sounds very interesting.
I know they're meant for cine use, however they are M mount lenses and I'd like to hear how they'd perform on a Leica M.

The M0.8 lenses are basically mechanically modified M lenses. They have had the aperture click stops removed, a geared focus ring installed, and hood modifications to more easily fit into a matte box. Optically, they should be identical. The analog look of the M0.8 range is a comparison to the lineup of Summicron-C and Summilux-C cine lenses that Leitz Cine offers.
@@RedDotForum Thank you for getting back to me. If the M 0.8 lenses are identical to the Leica M lenses then I'll stick with the Leica M glass, since I use an M camera. The description of the M0.8 lenses made me wonder if there was a difference between them and the Leica M lenses.

First love is still the 15-blade collapsible Elmar. The newer one is more contrasty but the fewer blades give a poorer rendering of out-of-focus areas.

Love a 50mm f1.4 on my MP
great video. I just got my noct 0.95. I havent shot it on anything else than M10R (so I cant compare) but I find that it has a lot of purple fringing from 0.95 to 1.4 or 2. Is it normal or because ot the 40mp of the sensor blooming more than a 24mp? oh I tried on my M10M and its amazing
It's normal behavior for the 50mm Noctilux on any digital M, not just the M10-R. Thankfully the CA only shows at the very widest apertures and is corrected with one click in Lightroom. Of course on the M10M, there's no color to fringe, so you're good there.

Thanks for the insightful overview and presentation. One additional remark regarding the 50/2 APO lens: in the most recent presentation from Peter Karbe, he explains why the 35/2 APO SL doesn't need the f/1.4 f-stop compared to the Summilux M lens. In fact the 35/2 APO SL supposedly provides at f/2 the same out-of-focus DoF as the 35/1.4 M ASPH at f/1.4 since it's correlated to contrast. I suspect this is also valid when comparing the 50/2 APO with the 50/1.4 Summilux M lenses. Are there any difference between the 50mm Summicron from Canada vs Germany as far as performance and image quality?
In cases where the same version of the lens was made both in Germany and in Canada, no there is no difference in performance and image quality. Both would share the same optical design, the same formulations of optical glass, the same mechanical components, and both would have been manufactured to the same tolerance.
I bought a 50mm Summicron that the seller listed as a "Type 3," and I've seen other websites use "type" with these lenses. You referenced "versions," e.g., "version 3." Are "type" and "version" synonymous?
Nick, I'd say yes, although we could not speak specifically for any reseller. Always do your research, and be sure to get the serial number of any lens you may be purchasing to verify age and version.

Hallo from Germany. Noct, isn’t the word Nacht in German, it is the word Nacht. The name Noctilux is a combination of Nocti, which is derived from the word nocturnal, while Lux is Latin for light. Really Great Chanel guys!

Ruud, thanks for the comment and tuning it. As this was just a show about M lenses, we did not cover the Summitar because it is a thread mount lens. For that, we highly recommend reaching out to the LHSA, as they are a fantastic organization with a vast network of experts in Leica lenses of that vintage.
The night king seem very best look on night photography. Or black on black. And the Lux is a Day king. And the Con or Rit is like the reporter.

Noctilux in f8, f11, in the daylight is sharp, easy, especially at 10m f11 everything in focus after 6m. I actually didn’t give a shit about weight after the experiment I got. I taste vanilla in the photos. Lol. I am trying to express my feelings.
I bought a 1986 M6 body with 35mm f1.4 Summilux German 1988 from a Camera Club member - I needed a 50mm -- I bought one new from David S H Leung Camera Dealer for £ 420 f2 Summicron, Number : 3502286 1989-- a 'Fortune' for me --- the ' Red Dot' fell off in a smelly market in Cebu, Philippines and the other day the focus lever fell off -- the German Technician in Leitz Factory was too 'Tight' with the amount of GLUE used ! I had to Super-Glue it back on but still do not have a replacement 'RED DOT'
50 Elmar-M is not about sharpness or bokeh. It’s Leica ‘s Tessar (the huge classic « eagle’s eye » with typical nice 3D sense) rendering

How many mega pixel that Modern-Leica lenses can use with (100% Zoom with quality detail)
Most of the modern era Leica M lenses perform well on the 40 megapixel M10-R and M10 Monochrom, as well as the 47 megapixel SL2.
Is the 50mm Noct due for an upgrade?
Not that we're aware of.
Summicron a softer bokey than the Summarit 2.5 or 2.4??? I don’t think so ! Summarit less magic?
A few years ago I sold my Summicron to get a Summarit 2.5 in part because the bokey of the Summicron V wide open was too harsh. The subject is indeed very sharp with the 50mm Summarit, but the bokey is is softer, which I prefer.
The name Noctilux is derived from the Latin words Noctu and Lux - night and light. Not the German word „Nacht“ 😉 best regards, u are best 👍

The guy on the right side said ”50/1,4 asph” SOOO. fast that i did not understand what lens they are talking about. While rest of the world say Summilux 50. I gues its the language they talk in the USA.

"Noctilux is King of the Night", 'cause Noct is German for "night." Well, no, it isn't. Night in German is Nacht. The name comes from the Latin "nocturnus" which means "of the night" and "lux" which means "light". So Noctilux means "Light of the night."

Is there a street photographer that uses a 50mm?
I’m a little uncomfortable getting too close to strangers using my favourite 35mm. Can I try a 50?

You can certainly use the 50mm for street photography. It is a classic focal length and it's the older style of photographing the streets. Later on photographers prefered a wider perspective and the 35mm was mostly used. Nowadays they start to go even further with 28mm. It mostly depends on your own needs and style. I love the 35mm. It's a fantastic focal length. I also love the 50mm. I only have one Leica and that is the M3. I use the 50/2 Rigid on it and it is great for everyday photography, also street photography, so I don't miss the 35mm on the M3.
You really should look up Henri-Cartier Bresson. His work is mostly shot with the 50mm. I believe mostly with the 50mm collapsable (the one that came before the v2 Rigid) since that is the lens he had and used with his M3. HCB didn't switch gear because it was better in certain area's. He used what he had and so really got to know his gear. Imagine shooting with that m3 and that same 50 for 40 years...You know you camera and lens inside out.
Guys excellent show, I gave you thumbs up. BUT photography is not about the lenses or cameras. Is about the photographer right? So I am suspicious when the favourite lenses of you both are $10K+! Thats you kind of photography? Otherwise, thumbs up for all this work put together.
Thanks. We do make clear that there are many fantastic choices for far less. But when pressed on favorites and "best", it's hard not to mention the 50mm APO-Summicron.

Can anybody interested in photography develop a duller subject than the differences between different 50mm lenses?
It is the guy behind the viewfinder who makes the difference.
Could you deal with it? Yet another floating-element aspherical monster will not make you an artist.
You cannot buy talent. They want you to believe the opposite. That's why they are rich, and you are not.
Truth is that people see width of 35mm but depth(subject distance) of 50mm.
That is why we don't have lens matching our eyes.

@@rumporridge1 the whole point of Leica cameras - apart from the incredible glass that Leica makes to go with them - is that they’re supposed to be small and discreet. That’s what’s cool about them - they’re so stealthy they allow you to get in and out without anyone even noticing. How can you do that with a white camera and a red lens?? It’s just tacky.
