    Thanks, Thorsten. If the M lens is similar to the SL 35, you should see a wonderful drop off that’s just like you were shooting a 1.4 instead of the “boring” 2.0! Another of Peter’s miracles. BTW, I bought one of your wonderful camera straps for my M10 about a month ago - black with orange trim - and absolutely love it!!

    Thanks Thorsten, well I finally bought my Q2 and I’m finding I really enjoy the 28mm field of view. I’m blown away by the clarity. The lens seems to produce a glow in some of the images which I love.

    I've placed pre-order via BHPhotoVideo on this since it was available for pre-order.
    I also got the 35mm f/1.4 floating element. Spectacular and versatile lens but kinda big. I would imagine using the APO on trips since it has close focus range for further flexibility and probably don't need to use my phone for some moderate close-ups.

    I still have the good ol' "King of Bokeh" version 4 Summicron. I love the way it renders wide open, with the slightly crazy background blur. And if you want ultimate sharpness, it's can still compete with modern lenses stopped down to F5.6 or F8. Never stops amazing me how highly resolving these old Leica lenses can be stopped down a bit.

    Good news for viewers: the Don is right. You do not need this masterpiece in order to take great pictures. I use the original eight element '50s Summicron on my M3 and I cannot imagine that the APO would be markedly better. There is a mountain of fine old Leica lenses available that will not savage your bank accounts.

    • @aswartboom
      @aswartboom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 8 element 35 Summicron definitely dries up my bank account with a price tag of USD3,500+ . The 2nd version (king of bokeh) 7 element is more affordable with stunning performance.

      I am still saving up for the 35mm APO because its longer sibling 50mm APO knocked my socks out. I have the 50 Noct 0.95, 1.0 and V1 to V4 50mm yet this 50APO is simply stunning. The results are near medium format output even on my M10-P with only 24Mp sensor. Like mentioned in the video, it's the clarity that is outstanding. With gentle fall offs. I also own S2, 006 and 007. The 120 APO Macro Summarit is a tad superior. Can't wait to try out the 35APO.

    Beginner question here: does the APO design somehow affect the impact on monochrom sensors, because usually lenses have a colour spectrum built into them, right? So does the APO design have any advantages over the ASPH design? I ask because I am acquiring a beautiful M Monochrom from 2012 (10760) with a 50mm Summicron. As I build out my lenses, I'd like to know more from people like you who are veterans with the M system.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Colors are clearer and more precise down to the most minute micro details. That should also affect monochrome because - after all - light is made of Red, Green and Blue and the precision with which those hit the sensor has influence. The APO 50 was introduced with the M Monochrom camera and showed extreme details (both lens and the fact that the sensor ony had to deal with monochromes).

    Lens weight is something Leica and Leica users should keep in mind. Street photographers regularly using Leica's 75mm lens will probably end up suing Leica for something called Noctilux-lens-induced arthritis or "Noctilux hands."

    Good insight, Sir Thorsten, This is the dilemma we all are in, I guess, can't decide which one to get as they are all in their own right SO SO GOOD!
    I am a 50mm guy myself but lately invested in a 35mm asp 1.4 (stainless steel version that comes with the M60 body, got that too, I got it because of the kit, basically, I was a sucker for the M60 kit and I bought it after yrs of thinking about it. Well I do enjoy the wider view of the 35mm, its not so wide but at the same time is as it captures just enough more then a 50mm. I think its good to own a 50 and a 35 in one's life time.

  • @florianblock4626
    @florianblock4626 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks Thorsten, are APO lenses useful for monochrome cameras? If this technique corrects difference in the light speeds / breaking angles of different colours then there should be limited benefits for B&W.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The 50APO is really great for monochrome, it could be APO and ASPH that plays in, but mainly most likely that the resolution (lines per mm) was doubled from 50APO and onward for M lenses. The sensor of the Monochrom can capture that resolution, where film had no chance and there was no reason to make that high-resolution lenses before digital.

    Great explanation of what it feels like to be a Leica M lens addict. Constant tradeoffs of specs vs novelty vs performance and $. Interesting to see that the SL 35mm APO is £3,900 and the new M 35mm Summicron APO is £6,700, 71% more expensive for shrinking the same elements into a M-lens body and removing autofocus.. Leica is becoming increasingly like Porsche and Rolex. You pay more for less..

I know, it is great to have 1.4 or 0.95 when you need or WANT it. I always wondered why some of the new lenses (especially with the Leica M) are so different in size. Larger Dia. flange mount = more light, but the length also. I mean 35mm focal length is 35mm, Y/N? Thanks for the vid. I can listen to vlogers talk about the Leica lenses all day.

    so Leica made a 35mm lens that close focuses to 30cm. But the Zeiss flektagon 35mm focuses down to 20 cm as does the Nikon 28mm f 2.8 Ais. Is it because the Leica is a more compact lens that makes its close focusing amazing? This is a real question. Im only lately realizing compact lenses have innate problems like with wide apertures etc?

      @@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Thank-you for response Thorsten. I think I under estimate how compact Leica lenses are. As I said it was a real question. The Flektagon and the Nikon are both slower lenses than the Leica. And I don't know if they are apochromatic or not. And when I compare the size of the Lecia 50mm f 0.95 to the current manual focus Nikon 50 mm 0.95 I'm left wondering what is wrong with Nikon that they have to make this lens as big as a house!
