Respect to Derk. Him going through with the "worm" is not only courageous but also sweet considering he probably did it to not buzz kill Amy's adventure idea.
The red castle-like building (KFC now) at 4:42 used to be the first burger restaurant in Dalian in the 1990s. It was called Williamsburg then. It was every kid's dream to have a birthday party there. And my dad told me that if I could speak English well, they would offer me a job, which includes limitless free burgers......Wow, my sweet childhood memory just came back!
Apparently in Korea the spoonworm is eaten raw with some vinegar & gochujang sauce to dip it in, so you can always try that method to get a less chivey sense of the taste.
Another fun video - being from the UK, it amazes me that people find it entertaining to feed the seagulls, over here, they are a constant menace to people with food at the seaside! Also, that black cab you went in was pretty much identical to the ones we have over here. They are everywhere in the cities and are definitely useful if you have a group of people or a lot of luggage - so much room!
Welcome to my hometown Amy! It’s a beautiful city with very friendly people! And it seems Derk did quite some research of it . Btw, about the you-know-what worm, I’m not a big fan either but by itself, it should not have any obvious taste, it adds a ton of umami to other ingredients instead. Glad you guys had a good stay there, hope more fun ones are in the future for you! Sending all the best wishes from Kiwiland ☺️
It is my home town too, but I don't really like there, because the place is so boring , culture is not rich, the old historical building put down a lot!
As someone who also has a worm phobia I’m so happy for Derk that he was able to push through and try something new! Definitely not an easy thing to do. I hope he’s proud of himself!
There is a rumor spreading around claiming that you will do a video on eating penis fish dumplings, Chicken feet, stinky Tofu and Durian if you get 100 Thumb Ups on any of your videos on your channel. Can't wait to see you eating.....
I just wanted to say, I always feel so happy when your videos are uploaded, I look forward to them, despite me being vegan i find it fascinating seeing other cultures and I mostly watch your videos while I eat my dinner 😂. Thank you for the hard work and all the effort you put into your videos, when I can’t afford to travel to the other side of the world right now, it’s so nice to feel like you have a friend showing you round.
I am so excited to find this video is shot in my city, Dalian. And I showed this video to my high school student, then I realized, I can't.....because of one word.. I used your video to teach my students Chinese and learn Chinese culture. My 11 year-old daughter watched almost every episode...I don't know how to show her this one. Still love the 海肠饺子。。
Besides, Dalian treasures mounted policewomen as city legacy. On the correct days you would find policewomen patrol on horseback downtown. Such a pity you guys missed that.
Hey Amy, welcome to my hometown! It’s funny that you visited my hometown and I’m living in Sydney now. Hahah, btw, all the city views and street snacks made me homesick! All the best wishes and looking forward to watching more videos. Cheers~ 😉
Awww I LOVEEE watching your adventures Amy!! Just when I thought this was a great episode, up come the fun spoonworm section 😂!! Omg good job to Derk taking up the challenge so gracefully hahaha!!! Loving the positive vibes from you two!!! Please keep producing these wonderful videos!! Love them!!! Thanks Amy! ❤❤❤
I like that the elder said to your boy friend: you are very beautiful. Haha. Btw forget the Australia seagulls, you have very large bat 🦇 I was so scared to walk in Sydney when I saw the giant bats!
So proud of you two for trying all those local food! lol Another proof of the similarity between the two city: Dalian and Yantai when I saw men zi! Yantai is also famous for spoon worm dishes, not only the dumplings but also spoon worm rice (海肠捞饭with chives, egg, fried rice - it's SO good, I'm sure Amy you'll love it). Also, for Derk a good seafood dumpling without any form of worm he could try is mackerel dumplings 鲅鱼水饺, very popular in Jiaodong area, and they could be bigger than your palm!
Wow, you came to Dalian, the city I spent my primary school time. It seems the city has changed a lot since that time. So many memories. The square around the city government was called Stalin Square at that time.
You two are so so lovely together. I had been dalian once like 20 years ago and it is so different. Actually my brother’s family is living there and funny part is, even though it is located in northeast people from dalian do not call themselves as northeasterners like the rest of 3 provinces. Thanks for sharing

In South Korea they have the p-fish as well, its called gae-bull (개불). Usually its available at sashimi places and they just literally slice it up and serve it raw with sauce. Its also usually still moving! It's rubbery and I can usually eat everything but not this 😅
And also about menzi: There are two versions of it: the street food version as in the video, and also the restaurant version known as 三鲜焖子. You need to go to a decent local restaurant that specializes in stir fry style. They would pan fried the menzi to be crispy outside, and stir fry it with shrimp, calamari and woodear mushroom.
