  • In 1997, the Cleveland Indians captured their third consecutive American League Central Division title and made their second World Series appearance in three years. From the blockbuster Spring Training trade for David Justice and Marquis Grissom, to Sandy Alomar’s dramatic All-Star home run at Jacobs Field, to capturing their second American League pennant in three years, Tribe fans can relive these exciting moments on this action-packed highlights tape.
**Up until recently, I've been downloading my personal VHS collection. However, the collection is obviously limited. I started a Patreon page to better find and purchase old VHS videos on EBAY and other websites, as well as at garage sales and other locations that might have VHS available, so I can upload them for all to see and share for free. See it here: / tombombadil
The Indians continued their recent streak of dramatic finishes with 42 come-from-behind victories and 12 wins in their final at-bat.
A record 3.4 million fans packed a sold-out Jacobs Field night after night to watch the Tribe “sock” it to American League foes en route to a third straight AL Central Division Championship. Watch the Tribe clinch the Central on September 23rd with a dramatic 10-9 comeback victory over the New York Yankees. See Sandy Alomar’s game-tying home run off Mariano Rivera in Game 4 of the Division Series with the Tribe on the brink of elimination. Suffer the heartbreaking moment when the Indians hope of a third World Championship ends with an extra-inning defeat in Game 7 of the World Series.
It’s all on this exciting video. Relive your favorite moments from 1997 and witness the behind-the-scenes stories of a team that once again captured the attention and hearts of the world’s best fans. Narrated by Tom Hamilton and featuring John Hart, Mike Hargrove and many favorite Indians players.

The last year of WKNR 1220 AM's contract as the flagship station with the Indians, it switched to WTAM 1100 the next year.

This was the most heart breaking World Series loss. Even more than losing to the Cubs in 2016.

The 1997 World Series was way tougher to lose than the 2016 World Series. Considering the history of the opponents, fan bases, and how those teams were built. The Cubs waited over 100 years, had a great fan base, and built their team from scratch. The Marlins were a 5th year expansion team with terrible fans and bought their championship before stripping it back down to nothing. I felt the Cubs at least deserved their championship, something I never felt about the Marlins.

I was 9 years old and remember this. But the 2016 loss being up 3-1 hurt just as bad. Growing up a huge indians fan cause of my dad being a big Indians fan I just wanted to see the tribe win a world series. I thought for sure we had it in 2016. Don't forget 2007 being up 3-1 over Boston in the alcs then Boston comes back to win then sweep the Rockies in the world series. Should have been the Indians that year too

True, but Tito gave the Bosox a championship later. Cubs finally got theirs. CLE remains the longest w/o one now, and the Browns, even with all their great teams in the late 80s have NEVER even been to a Super Bowl, unlike the Patriots. So which fans have suffered more?

How many of those Super Bowls the Patriots would’ve won if they never started Tom Brady? Exact same scenario with the 49ers and Joe Montana.

When you look at how absolutely stacked their offense was throughout the mid/late 90s, you have to wonder how many World Series the Indians could have won in that era if they had that one legitimate ace?

So true. The '99 Tribe was the first team in 50 years, and the last team since, to score over 1,000 runs in a regular season, yet got ousted in the divisional series by Pedro Martinez of Boston.

I remember the pundits claiming "two average teams in the WS was bad for the game." Tribe only won 86 games that year and, yes, many of us long time CLE sports sufferers knew, WE KNEW, Mesa would blow it.

Fast forward to 2016. With a 3 games to 1 lead and home field advantage in the World Series,
we knew, YES WE KNEW, the sports Gods were setting us up again.

Jack McDowell had a botched elbow surgery that pretty much ended his career early that year. He was supposed to be healed and healthy for the second half of the season. Maybe could have helped in that World Series.

Yet another example of the CLE sports curse. Sandy Alomar carried this 86-76 team that got hot in the playoffs.
I remember how the critics in both leagues were whining about two mediocre teams in the World Series.

“It is of greater importance to build a club that can win its division rather than a club that can win a World Series...our philosophy is to build a club that is not on paper the best club but by building a club that can win a division”
    - Mark Shapiro explaining why the Indians didn’t think it mattered if they finished 86-75.... Shapiro isn’t wrong. Resigning Albert belle would have been an albatross around the teams neck, but Cleveland could make these decisions because they knew the central division was so weak that year.
Sometimes teams like the 97 Indians, the 2000 Yankees, or the 06 cardinals can make this type of calculated decision that they don’t have to bet the farm to qualify for the playoffs in a weak division. But they still have to explain to us why their teams are so mediocre 😂
