Painting faded plastics car trims on Honda Civic

- Time to refresh the look of the tired grey faded plastic trims on my Honda Civic. I decided to keep them on the car rather than remove, as the clips often break on you. I used special plastic bumper flexible paint that gave a lovely satin black finish.
Plastic trims were rubbed down with Scotchbrite, then cleaned with panel wipe, I then masked up the trims with tape. You can use newspaper to stop overspray, however as I've got some experience of this I decided to just be careful and neat with the spraying!

Looks so much better 👍🏽
Some people should never be let loose with an aerosol.
Looks great, have just got a black one myself after my red type s bit the dust last year.😢
The fitment on those wheels is NICE!
Thanks, they are Mercedes wheels from my old CLK, although the PCD was different ,they just about fit !
@@GrooveOn Haha nice one. The offset is perfect. I have a mk8 type s diesel with wider than normal 18s and more negative offset than standard but nowhere near as much as yours.
Im getting serious mk2 fiesta xr2 vibes from your car (I know how stupid that sounds lol).
Thanks x !
Looks great on the black car, I done my civic its silver and the satin black just doesn't look right against the silver, too much of a contrast.
looks bad ass
I own the same honda civic in Red , the bumper trims are grey , not black , always thought that's how it should look , had no idea they are faded . Baught the car a year ago, by the way
I know they can get really grey, mine still look great
Have a 2007 Honda Civic Type S GT in Milano Red, the trim was definitely grey on the red's.
What did you use to black out the center of the rear lights? Is it just a vinyl?
It was black vinyl, I bought it on eBay
Did it not peel off without using primer? And how many cans did you use for the 3 coats, please?
Hi it's been over a year and it's looking great. The paint is a special self priming plastic paint, I used 2.5 cans
That came out really well! These textured plastic bits on cars are an absolute nightmare to keep looking good, down here in south of France the plastic bits look awful a week after cleaning and treating, I have the same problem with the plastic/powder coated rails on my Defender, I though you had to use a special etch primer to get the adhesion on plastic? Thanks for posting this! CHris B.
You do need an etch primer with normal paint, however the paint I used goes straight on the plastic!
can you tell me what rims are those and what size is the wheel please? looks really good!!
They are actually Mercedes vi brabus monoblock, I changed the spigot hub ring. They are staggered 9.5J rears 255 x 35 x 18" and 8.5J fronts, 225 x 40 X 18" they just fit!
Just wondering about your wheels mate, where can I find some like those and did you use spacers?
They are Mercedes Brabus VI replicas, I fitted a spigot ring on hub about 1mm to convert Mercedes 66.6mm bore down to Honda, no spacers needed just fitted on nice th-cam.com/video/OEt50HCEmQE/w-d-xo.html
Great video. I am guessing it isn't just me who loves the Civic mark 8? Mine is painted in a light gold colour - I have never seen another one like it.
For the trims I used to use liquid black boot polish, but I think next time they fade I will be using black vinyl paint like you have.
Thanks for the video. It's really useful.
i've used boot polish before too !,, however the paint is holding up really well !
@@GrooveOn I think that's what I will do then! There was another video which shows someone using a blowtorch to get the faded plastic back to black. Thanks for the video and I'm glad it's worked OK. Your civic looks great.
Do you think you could install a front lip splitter on the car? Or would it not suit the car
I think you could, it would be quite easy, but keep it subtle
Would spray come off with a jet wash 🧼 I.e car wash etc ??
Or karcher pressure wash? Thats the question...
Great video! Its been over a year now...are they still holding up?
Yeah they are still good, I'll do a video to show I think 🤔
@@GrooveOn excellent! Seriously contemplating doing mine 👍
Great job! How's it holding up and looking now?
its good, I actually did a follow up video to show how it looks one year later you may want to see: th-cam.com/video/vLL4TxgkOBc/w-d-xo.html
@@GrooveOn Great thanks!
Looks great! How long does it last until fade again? Also how long in between applying different coats
Hi there well since I've done the video it's been a few months and it still looks as black as the day I did it I'm really impressed no flaking. The good thing is as the bumpers have a Matt finish you get great results
Hey nice vid, has it continued to look good after this video
If you looked at my car today you would think not, but once cleaned, it's perfect, no flaking
How did you remove that back bumper middle plastic with the Honda logo?
I used a rear vinyl that is made specifically for the Honda Civic mk8 it covers over the whole panel 👍 I can arrange if you are interested.
@@GrooveOn thanks I’ve been looking at all the mods im just gonna get the tinted type r middle cluster and swap it over 60quid
Would this paint work with the wiper refurb too?
It works on most plastics mate
@@GrooveOn That'll keep things uniform.
I spent my first year in a body shop just masking up really
Yeah I know what you mean, on the day I had the wrong tape, too wide but got it done 👍
You have the rear lights center vinyl wrap , my civic is also black and was thinking of getting one but im sold on the looks of it on yours .
Hi there, yes the black vinyl works well and modernisers the rear I think. Let me know if you need the vinyl I could arrange.
What alloys are ?
They are Mercedes VI monoblock replicas. if you have a look at my other video I show how to convert. studio.th-cam.com/users/videoOEt50HCEmQE/edit
How long does it last for?
So if you watch this video you can see it's still good after over a year!

Good cars but i just dont like all the cheap plastic stuff on them, even the door handle are cheap plasticy looking.
Yeah I agree, however you would be surprised how reliable these little Honda's are I have just made this video on daily user for commuting. th-cam.com/video/SeskQoB5TPc/w-d-xo.html
What is the cost bro
cost was two cans of bumper paint, masking tape and scotchbrite, all in less than £25. Here is how they look 12months later ! th-cam.com/video/vLL4TxgkOBc/w-d-xo.html
