Briggs and Stratton have a nasty habit if the valves are not adjusted properly then it will crank slow like you have a bad starter or a dead battery. The reason it cranks slow it's because the compression release is not engaging. Take your time and pay attention. Generally I do . Intake .003" to .005" / Exhaust .005" to .007" generally when you get blow by or popping through your carburetor that's a good sign valves are out of adjustment and if you adjusted them properly and it still does it then it's time to do the valve job. If your machine smokes and burns oil chances are you have carbon build up around your valves. Causing it to pop back through the carburetor and backfiring.

It seems everyone has his own idea about what clearance to set the tappets on the same engine. An A&P mechanic once told me had rather hear the tappets a little bit than not at all because then he knew the valves were fully closed and fully seated so that they would not burn. Of course this is an air cooled engine, heat can cause a variation as the parts expand under heat, so far I’ve heard three different adjustment clearances in videos.

1st we can say that manufacturer specification allow a plus or minus tolerance, things don't need to be that specific. These are usually a thousandth in one direction or another.
I like to be on the larger size to some degree as you mentioned, things get hot and ya loose clearance.. We wouldn't want to keep a valve open that should be closed.
Looser clearances, especially with exhaust can increase valve duration slightly. When the valve does seat, the added clearance adds a bit more time for the valve to remain closed thus increasing seat time/duration which improves heat transfer and reduces the possibility of a burnt valve.
      Thankx for the comment!

Now I like that technique for adjusting. Adjusting the jamb bolt/screw to influence the nut position.
As far as the numbers go...that seems to be crap shoot among the many opinions.
They could had had put it in the owners manual but nooOOoo...

How did you get .008 and .014 when I found that the manual says .003-.005" intake and .005-.007" exhaust are you talking mm?

Yes This is the issue I have. Ya cant re- edit either.
I saved a file link in one of my folders for engine specs, it was a link to a full chart on briggs engine specs for almost all the families. Well, that link and a few others I saved doesn't work now!
Notice though that I slid in a .007 inch feeler gauge on the Intake before I did any adjustments!
I do know now from experience that this being a much older engine may have had the larger gap.
The newer designs often are fine @ .002 - .004 inch for both! BUT usually this setting is for the smaller 6hp engines.
I have several videos that are newer on a variety of engines and all of those the gaps are tighter.

hey arch, great video, my engine will not startup, cranks, no start. i have replaced carburetor vacuum lines, fresh gas. so i was going to do a valve, but i was wondering since it will not startup, is that a valve issue. i know the very first time i attempted to crank up two weeks ago or so, black smoke went every where. thanks for any advice on this Arch.

    What does the magnet do?

    • @TheNovaJohn
      @TheNovaJohn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Electro magnetics!
The magnet induces a current into the primary side of the coil, that is stepped up the the secondary side (amplified) and produces the spark
