Rivers & Streams - Realistic Scenery Vol.8

  • A water scene can dramatically change the look of an already fantastic model and make it look even better! In this easy to follow tutorial I’ll step you through modeling with water from a plain piece of foam board right up to an amazing looking river scene!
    This model river is made in HO scale however as with most of the tutorials I do the techniques can be applied to not only HO scale but N scale and lager scales as well. The technique I use can be applied for a slow flowing river or stream modeling a lake, modeling rapids and modeling a waterfall as well.
    I use EnviroTex Lite to model this diorama however most two part epoxies will work just as well and you can also use Woodland Scenics Realistic Water which is an acrylic that is easy to use and easy to clean.
    A lot of modelers will avoid adding a water scene to their model railroad layout or war gaming terrain because in the past a lot of others have had bad experiences using the various water products however… with some careful planning and proper preparation you should have no problems working with these products.
    The technique I use for this diorama can be applied in many different scenarios from modelling a dam to modelling white water rapids and they will all look absolutely amazing. When it comes to adding ripples be sure to only apply a thin layer of Mod Podge, if the mod podge layer is too thick it will become cloudy on humid days as it absorbs the moisture out of the air, the Woodland Scenics Water Effects also has the same problem when applied very thick.
    I hope you are enjoying the tutorials, I spend many hours (when I’m not working my day job) filming and editing these tutorials in order to upload them to TH-cam. Here are some stats for this video:
    Total amount of footage filmed - 12 hours 20 minutes and 14 seconds
    Total file size of filmed footage - 104 gig
    Total time spent building the diorama - Over 40 hours
    Number of photos taken during final photo shoot - 94 (A lot less than usual because it started to rain)
    Time spent editing - 22 hours
    Approximate cost of diorama - $105.00 (The vehicle was the most expensive at $50 because I had to order it from Europe and pay a large postage fee)

      Yes indeed. I just did a cutout in my Styrofoam board for a lazy creek or small river. Will (try!) to get Luke's results as I've never done any scenery before. Studying real scenery and watching these MRR channels are a great way to overcome lack of imagination.

    TIP: I've sometimes used a guy with a fishing pole in my dioramas. However, from an HO scale perspective the fishing line in this case would be just about invisible. For this I tried using the finest human hair I could possibly find (which looked more convincing), but even then I wasn't satisfied. In the end I decided to leave it off entirely. Regardless, keep wowing us all with your incredible techniques and videos. Can't get enough!

    Luke, you are truly a modelling Jedi and the force is strong with you. I've watched this video about 37 times now, and all your others of course, and have been applying the techniques on my own build - first time doing a river scene. Just wanted to say thank you for putting this together. Really love your work and the way you put your videos together. So clear and easy to follow. Will get on over to Patreon soon. Will send you a photo of my finished project, would appreciate your feedback. Thanks again mate!

    Ok it is Thursday morning I should be in the gym working out , I just can not stop watching Luke make a diorama. I do Terrariums and small miniature rooms and I can incorporate some of his details in my projects. I do not want to leave this video I need to get going. The soft music and his voice is very relaxing unlike some others I have watched. Thank you Luke

    What do you do with all these dioramas? You've got to have a big collection by now! Also, do you have any larger layouts? I know the dioramas are great for youtube episodes, but it would be cool to see a series based on a big train layout!

    • @TM-gm6zk
      @TM-gm6zk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I totally agree,though he said he was making a layout in his first couple of videos.

    • @BoulderCreekRailroad
      @BoulderCreekRailroad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      yeah the layout is still a work in progress, these dioramas basically just sit on the shelf and after a while some of them may get dismantled to build new dioramas. I'll do some more videos on my actual train layout later on when I start doing some more work on it.

      Well whatever you do, keep making videos! It's fantastic to see what you can make and get tips for my own layout.
      ...whenever I get around to having that kind of time and disposable income.
