Another option for water is gloss Modpodge medium. Matte Modpodge medium is also great for scenic work as an alternative to PVA. Can be diluted for fixing ground covers and ballast and is very flat. The tints can also be used for colouring rocks, creating tide marks etc around water scenes, can be diluted with water. Great vid and result 👍
Yes try matt Modpodge or matt acrylic medium, I now use it for most scenic gluing. I've used gloss medium for smaller water effects, but I've seen much larger areas done with it. All these products are acrylic and mix well with other acrylics.
That entire scene looks amazing. You did a fantastic job (even compared to the many other things on your layout) I used realistic water about a year ago on my layout, and I'm still well pleased with how it came out and how it's held up.
Great job with this project! I enjoyed seeing the different scenery steps. It is very inspirational. If I may be so bold to offer 2 bits of information. First, try using Scenic Cement along the creek bank. It seeps in better and won't give that "mushy" look. When pouring your water, pour in down a stirring stick to avoid most of the bubbles. Again, keep up the great work.
That was very informative. I really appreciate seeing the experiments, that saves a lot of time and is interesting on its own. I'm planning a water feature but have never done one, so this was really useful.
I find the product realistic looking plus you added just enough for the look wanted, you know, you could make a lot more and sell them to others who don't have your talent.
Very nice experimentation/demonstration! Scene looks incredible with the additional details added! Not sure if I would call it a water feature or sewage feature LOL, wouldn't swim/fish in it for sure, too much stuff heh but looks great!
Im really happy to see this video..I'm going to be using the realistic water and thought i had to use a plaster base. Now i will use the scenic glue for base. Thanks for posting this it is very helpful
Awesome! I picked up some of that tint a couple years back.....good to see it in action! One day I shall build a layout. Love the details along the riverbank...now I have to go back and watch all your videos from the beginning, again.!
Absolutely fascinating to watch and learn from! Thank you! I've always enjoyed doing landscaping around my home. Never having gotten to the scenery stage on any of my layouts previously, but being on the verge of starting scenery on my current layout, after watching this video, I think I am really going to enjoy landscaping in 1/87th scale!
Great job and awesome video. I love seeing things done differently. I used the plaster sheet with their plaster then used their undercoat to seal everything.
Not bad. It looks good. They say less is more. Maybe contrasting colors next time. I felt like some stuff blinded together. I heard and haven’t tried it. You can take Mod Poge glue and make ripping in your water if it ever does dry. Good job though.
Hi Nscaler454 , very good how to video . I’m in the process of doing some water features. I’m doing all the landscaping first before I pour the water. I do like the Realistic Water and the products. Thanks for sharing. Have a good weekend. 😎😎. 👍
Very nice work. A delightful scene. I haven't tried the Realistic Water from Woodland Scenics, but I have had good results with their Deep Pour Murky Water kit (a two-part epoxy). Out of one kit I have poured a creek (for a shelf layout) two streams, and surfaced a lake and two ponds. Be careful to follow their directions EXACTLY. Dries pretty hard and has a nice sheen.
Great video once again. Water feature looks awesome. Can we get an overall shot of the layout next video please. I'm always trying to figure out what it looks like in a wide shot :) Thanks!
Thumbs Up..... just a small (not so small) note. Bubbles and Ripples can be fixed and made with air gun and yes a heat gun will get rid of bubbles quickly..... Even in N scale shredded tissue can be manipulated into wave, flow and white water features. Layers are the key to depth indication and manipulation of the colour will highlight both depth and flow direction of the water feature. I had not heard that the scenic water "never dried" most NZ and UK stuff does end up like Jelly with a mat like finish. Leaks are most certainly an issue... In OO scale the water feature costs are extremely high which is why some modellers use different products that do require mixing. Complete drying is a 10-14 day wait in the best of conditions. The important thing to remember is to scale your water. Wait at least a week before thinking about that final layer which should be the lightest.
I found this video to be very helpful. That's because after the initial hassles of deciding which underlying products would, and supposedly wouldn't, interact with the resin, the process still wasn't flawless. Instead of resin, I intend to fully examine all the methods of "painting" on color and texture I've seen from other modelers. It seems they've had almost none of the same considerations of product interaction restrictions like shown with this product. Again, thank you for the very informative video.
your eye for the fine details are most excellent ......looks great !!! I never used that Woodland Scenics liquid glue stuff ,too expensive and just a gimmick ( IMHO of course). You cannot go wrong with matte Mod Podge mixed 1 podge and 3 water with a wee few drops of dish soap (as the surfactant). The mixture dries flat and rock hard and plays nice with all paint and glues. All my ballast and ground cover ,static grass and water features are sealed and fixed with good old Podge.....it`s a real beauty way to go ! Keep up the great work ,your channel is one of the best out there and N scale is the bonus. Happy Canada Day . Paul T from the Prairie Hinterlands .
Thank you for taking the time for posting. I am in the process of researching for my first lay out. Lucky for me your video popped up. I want a canal scene in my layout. I want some wind rippling in the water way. I wonder how that is done. Your attention to deatil, the grass, gravel and junk (not thought of that) is fantastic.
That turned out really nice! I’m modeling a very similar project so definitely will copy it. One question; what is the piece of music around 11 minutes into the video? I Shazam it but didn’t come up and I really liked it. Thanks for the great video. You made it look really easy.
I think you did a heck of a job when I seen I'm making your stream. Just wondering if you ever used Elmer's clear glue just wondering how it would turn out
in my case, it is dry enough to touch with your finger so dust should not be an issue. Some Dust Off and/or a soft fan brush will likely be my choice cleaning method.
HI. I have to fill a fountain for a nativity scene. Was the fountain made of cork and subsequently grouted with cement and vinyl glue of Giotto. Are there any problems with Woodland Scenics realistic water?
That resin culvert most likely warped because it wasn't fully cured. (with UV light) setting it in the sun is one way to do that. Should only take 5-10 mins tops.
The culvert was UV cured weeks in advance, so it had plenty of time to fully cure. Because it was a water washable resin, I think the glue/water mix being saturated on it caused it to soften up.
That's odd that it never fully hardens, I wonder if instead of having a barrier on the edge for all of eternity you can use some "paint" the edge with resin that does fully harden.
I don't think paint would be a sufficient barrier to keep the resin from oozing out over time. Obviously the deeper the resin, the more issue it presents.
I fully agree with everyone, your work is beautiful. But unfortunately I think you are going to be very disappointed with the Realistic Water. A friend of mine was ruined by dirt dust and his putting something on it and it sank in. That happened 2 years after pouring. On my layout I had lost my AC for a few months. It was a extremely hot time and my small river became a running river. Thats why I won't ever use it again and out at the museum/club will not use. I wish it hadn't been or there is something to add on top or with to harden it. Good luck with it
Live in Texas and we had temps over 100for a while. Shut up room no air. My ac was broke but the stuff never really gets hard. I have no faith in the stuff. Again this is my experience with it and I won't recommend and its not aloud to be used at my club
I never use that because I don't like that product. I use bar resin and it's much stronger and more durable than anything else. I have used it on my layout and it's been about 5 years and it still looks like the day I laid it down
We’re a great bunch eh, the human race. We have to put miniature crap all over the water feature because that’s what we leave about in real life - and it actually looks more realistic!
Great job on not just the water, but that entire scene.
Thanks!
Fantastic job. I really liked seeing all the little extra pieces you added in. The tires, pallets and cone really add to the scene.
Thanks!

Nice job on the water feature! Love the details
The edge of the water looks great the glue gave it some depth, like shallow banks....
Great details and excellent tutorial.

Wow that looks so good from the thumbnail. 👍
A very educational video combined with the narrative and the explanations of what you were doing was top class. Thank you!

I find the landscaping to be the funnest part. It's really when your layout comes to life and you make it your own.
Love watching your videos!! They give me good ideas for my N scale layout!
Nicely done. Thanks for the experimental endeavor. Missed adding a shopping cart 🛒as part of your waterway jetsam.

How long does it take for the Deep Pour to dry?
@@nscaler454 In my experience about 24 hrs from a 1/8" ti 1/4" pour, but I try to keep my hands off for several days to let it get nice and hard.

I will definitely try to get something going soon. Right now half the layout is a work bench haha.
Turned out very nice. Looks great!
It looks good but I think I’d prefer a two part resin so when dry it sets hard .
What a fantastic video and I love the commentary that went with it
Excellent work on the scenery. Thank you for sharing.
Very nice work. I appreciate you taking the time to test different materials.

Woodland Scenics does offer a water effect product. I've heard you can use toilet paper too though.
Beautiful work. 😎👍🏼
Another coat ?ah well........I don't know. When in doubt do without Looks great to me. Nice job .

Music gets posted in description. That track is Forever by Nomyn
Thanks!
If you were going to add a boat to the water, at what stage would you do it?
I think I would put the boat in first and let the resin settle around it.
I think you did a heck of a job when I seen I'm making your stream. Just wondering if you ever used Elmer's clear glue just wondering how it would turn out
If it's PVA, it's bad to use with Realistic Water, regardless of color. I would check with Elmers.
It came out looking great, but you said it really never dries. So what about dust. Will dust stick to it after a few days, weeks etc.
in my case, it is dry enough to touch with your finger so dust should not be an issue. Some Dust Off and/or a soft fan brush will likely be my choice cleaning method.

Как Вы боритесь с пылью на макете?
Pour it down a dowel or a chopstick and that will help eliminate the bubbles as it runs down the wood...
Great tip
Great job. Did you have to bklock off the culvert?
The culverts only go into the foam base about half an inch. There is not a channel between them.
Try using real artist acrylics and a paint brush
HI. I have to fill a fountain for a nativity scene.
Was the fountain made of cork and subsequently grouted with cement and vinyl glue of Giotto.
Are there any problems with Woodland Scenics realistic water?
just make sure your vinyl glue is a good sealant as cork and cement are very porous materials.
Stupid question: what is the 16.4 in the measurements for?
There are 16.4 ML in a cubic inch.
@ ahh okay thank you haha. Been a while since I took a math class
Try using a straw and blow gently to get rid of the bubbles. The carbon dioxide in your breath will cause them to pop
I fully agree with everyone, your work is beautiful. But unfortunately I think you are going to be very disappointed with the Realistic Water.
