Amazing, the number of comments criticizing Coverdale's attitude in the interview. To me, he comes across as an articulate man. He also sounds genuine and clearly respects Page. Sure, he likes to talk, but then again Page is known to be a quiet man. As for Coverdale's performance on this album, he shows what a great singer he is. He's got his own style. Just like Plant, also a great singer, but also with his own style.
Hahaha you know it! Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
Here are some things people miss about Coverdale Page, Plant, and 1993. The US was in the middle of a pretty serious economic recession in 1993 and "legacy" acts seemed to suffer the most (Deep Purple famously didn't bother touring the States on their 25th anniversary tour with Gillan that year). The reunion craze of 1994 (Page/Plant, The Eagles) came as the economy began to recover. The fact that CP hit the top five on the charts and sold over a million copies wihtout a major tour accompanying it is quite frankly stunning. It gets painted as a commercial disappointment when in reality it VASTLY overachieved. One needs to only point to Robert Plant. Fate of Nations barely scraped into the top 40 sold half of what Coverdale Page did and RP ended up playing theaters by the time his touring completed in early 1994. One could make a convincing argument that the relative "success" of Coverdale Page spurred Plant to call Page for the Unplugged offer rather than it being Coverdale himself as Plant's reason (which has always been overblown). Coverdale Page is the biggest selling studio album of Page's solo career (by far) and is only behind No Quarter in terms of overall sales of any project Page did post Zeppelin. It's remarkable the album gets misremembered by some fans as a failure. It was not. Fantastic video as always my man. Coverdale Page is one of those historical anomalies in long careers (Coverdale included) that has needed this kind of excellent video.
This is a GOLD comment. Thank you for sharing a very detailed and well presented thesis on the economy back then. You are 100 right. I will cover some of your points on Episode 5 for 1993, hope you enjoy it! Thank you for watching!
Also 1994 was the year of Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones who both had the Top Two Tours of the Year. I got to luckily catch Pink Floyd on The Division Bell Tour on the second of a three night stand at Foxboro Stadium. The Stones got so jealous of Floyd that Mick and Keith decided to borrow from The Eagles playbook and charge $100 a ticket at all stadiums where The Stones were only allowed two shows as Pink Floyd got to have THREE SHOWS in some markets. Also The Division Bell sold roughly 4 million in the US and was #1 for FOUR STRAIGHT WEEKS ON BILLBOARD. Voodoo Lounge stalled at #3. Hell Freezes Over also hit #1 for two weeks in November, 1994 and ironically kept Page/Plant No Quarter Unledded from #1 in the States. I was a Junior in High School in 1993 and a Senior in September, 1993-June, 1994. Musically I was upgrading my KISS Katalog on CD (I was allowed a new CD every two weeks for good behavior). The detours from KISS were reserved for Brian May's Back to the Light album which was released in February, 1993 in the States (and I was a Queen nerd so I grabbed) and finishing the Pink Floyd catalog on CD (Atom Heart Mother I upgraded to CD on my 17th birthday that January and also The Piper at the Gates of Dawn that February vacation). The other major detour was Coverdale-Page. Hearing "Pride and Joy" and "Shake My Tree" on US Rock Radio and the former having a video on MTV is what led me to get the CD the first weekend of April, 1993 and I played that album A LOT! Plus also reacquainting myself with Billy Squier's Don't Say No and Emotions in Motion albums (the former had the Zeppelin esque Lonely Is the Night and Squier was influenced by Zeppelin). Rush had their biggest week up to that point with Counterparts in October, 1993 debuting at #2 (only the pesky Pearl Jam followup Vs kept Rush from a #1 album in America but the guys in Rush LOVED the Alternative Rock boom and in a strange twist, Kevin Shirley (the recording engineer on Counterparts) would go to work with Jimmy Page in The Black Crowes live and also the 2000s Zeppelin live projects). I got off topic but I concur Coverdale Page was a HUGE HIT! In fact, my study teacher (who filled in for my guitar teacher one day in Guitar Ensemble) told me no instrument playing and wanted the class like a study. I then said "How about I play an album on the cassette deck" so he said "I hope it's Jimmy Buffett" and when he heard "Shake My Tree" he nearly had a heart attack and my classmate (who was also a Zep fanatic and a left handed guitarist and looked to me as his musical soulmate as I would either play drums or bass guitar when we jammed) loved what he heard that he bought the cassette that day.
Recording that version was a TREAT, BONZO had perfect time!!!! Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
This episode was probably what I looked forward to the most out of this series. I remember buying this album for a friend who didn't live near a record store and wanted me to pick it up on release day. Since I lived within walking distance of one, he gave me the money at school, and right after school ended, I went straight to the record store and picked up the album, and gave it a good listen. I fell in love with it right away. It's one of the few albums for me that doesn't require skipping tracks whenever I'm in the mood to listen to it. I thought it packed a heavy punch, and like what was said in the video and the comments, this is easily Jimmy's best post-Zeppelin work by a mile. Great video as always, JCM!
Very nice to read your comment, this was also the episode i looked forward the most to edit hehe. I agree this album can be heard without skipping in the right mood. Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
I don't know about other David Coverdale interviews, but he was right to take the high road on Robert Plant's verbal jibes: 'I'm not going to get into a verbal "Wimbeldon"...'
looking foward this one. Great album and hope the bring out the reissue as it’s been 30 years. I want to hear the unreleased songs and the solo on don’t leave me this way is amazing.
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 there’s an interview from a couple of years ago where Jimmy said he’s working on it and Coverdale too. Jimmy has been promising new music since 2014 and playing live. None of its happened so we can hope
Your mix with John Bonham's drums was so good it made his loss resonate again. Imagine what he could have done in the 80s alone muchless the 90s. I remember getting this CD upon release and digging it from beginning to end. Over now is the song that made me hope for a 2nd album from them. Funny how Coverdale just takes over an interview not unlike Plant; maybe it's a vocalist thing. I always love your episodes on this channel.
It made me miss him too when mixing this one, glad you enjoyed it though. Bonham's feel makes riffing on guitar so pleasant, Jimmy really lost his musical soulmate. A 2nd album was needed yes, hopefully you will enjoy Episode 5 where i show why in my opinion...this had to end, as much as we wanted them together hehe. Coverdale does take over interviews, he knew showbusiness well indeed! Stick around for Episode 4 too :)
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories You know way more than me about why this needed to end, so I will check out the next episode. I watch all of them. It appeared a delicate chemistry with these 2 different personalities and trying to put this music on the charts at this time; they were going to bring in "Zep-Snake" fans, but maybe it would soon not be enough to keep afloat. More than anything, it was and still is a business.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Storiesi dug what you were going for, you definitely got the Bonham sound....but you added a kick ...or maybe your tempo is a lil faster....but i thought the original beat had that pulse & space that Bonham was famous for...your tones are dead on.
Yeah, this album rocks hard, i don't really like Plant's take on Shake my Tree as we will see on the 1995 episode! Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
Coverdale is awesome with Whitesnake and isn’t too bad on this release but if you listen to there Japan concerts Coverdale just couldn’t pull off Zeppelin music,I was stunned that Jimmy played “Still of the Night” and killed it! Somewhere on TH-cam you can hear them,I was looking forward to seeing them in the states but it wasn’t to be.
Yes Coverdale is a better singer using more technique than Plant. Plant often belts instead of singing an I can't believe more people never notice that the rest of the time he is crooner. Regardless, Coverdale is nowhere near the lyricist Robert is. And the lyrics are extremely cliche on Coverdale/Page.
Awesome review of this album! I've revisited this album many times over the years and always find something new in the songs. I agree the mix is very vocal/guitar heavy. A current remix would be welcomed to my old ears. Thanks JCM for all the research and love you create with these mini documentaries.
Glad you enjoyed it! I want to re-record the album from scratch...i can dream right? But it is possible, just lots of patience needed. A remix could only work if Coverdale's personal digital transfers are in good shape. Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
Once again you don’t let us down Jose. I’m ashamed to say that this is an album that I really had lost sight of. Strange considering how much I loved it when it came out. Once again JCM brings a much needed focus onto his topic, those seemingly unrelated clips from TV commercials, sports and news broadcasts show an attention to detail that is absolutely second to none. Not content to merely document the core elements of the subject he skilfully weaves them into a context both local and global in scale. Fantastic to hear him playing with Bonzo; this is not for kudos but shows an artist calling upon his entire arsenal for illustrative purposes. That said it was the summit of this episode as it just sounded so great. A personal thank you Jose, I was surprised and privileged to see my name with my fellow Patreon supporters. I am so proud to be associated with this project. Quite possibly the most significant post Zep project since Page and Marino first remastered the catalogue. Thank you.
You are a member of this project Paul, no question. Your comments are always so eloquent and detailed, i'm honored really. I took my time to digest the research notes first, so much going on for the 1991-1993 period it's been challenging. Playing with Bonzo was a special moment, i thought so many what ifs...Jimmy lost his musical soulmate i believe. I am thinking if i could re-record the album with a drummer friend of mine...we'll see if it happens. Hope you enjoy Episode 4 coming up soon! Episode 5 on 1993 is gonna be LONG, i can feel it, the Page/Plant clash with their respective albums hitting the market.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Thanks Jose. Any chance you could get George to do drums? I’d love to hear that. Though I’m guessing he’s going to be touring with PFOZ which I guess will keep him busy. Years ago I used to assume that the greatest friendship in Zep was Plant and Bonham as they went back to the Band of Joy. But it’s obvious to me it was really Page and Bonham I think as friends and musicians. I think if he hadn’t have died and Zep split up anyway that Bonzo would have worked closely with Jimmy which in turn would have made Jimmy far more productive in terms of new material.
Paul i asked George a while ago and agreed. He admitted not being too familiar with this track but yeah, i imagine the PFOZ agenda has him quite busy right now so i'll wait. Pretty sure this will happen :)
I bought this CD back in 2021 as well. It took me that long to discover it…and I’m a Zep fan from the beginning and a moderate Whitesnake fan as well. Go figure. LOVE Coverdale’s voice with Jimmy. It has the range and the power. The managers who set up that meeting had the vision. Great match-up. I don’t care what Robert said. It smacked of “I won’t go out with you anymore but I don’t want anyone else to either”. Jimmy wanted another Robert, in looks, charisma, energy and voice, because Jimmy is all about live performance and he needed a great frontman. Coverdale could fill that slot perfectly. This album deserved to have been toured in Europe, The States and South America…but I think Japan was the only live performances. And then Robert reached out with his siren song to rework the Zeppelin material, and of course Jimmy could not pass up that opportunity. Zeppelin was his great love. And that partnership with Robert again brought us some amazing music.
Spot on with your commentary and ideas, i agree. You got the CD in 2021 as well, Wow, it's a thing then, a club hehe. I hope Episode 5 when i talk about 1993 will shed some light on the tour that didn't happen and also, understand Robert's reasons a bit more. This is a fascinating story. Thank you so much for watching Geoffrey! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
Totally true about Robert Plant getting all jealous ex lover and then being verbally vindictive towards David 'Cover-Version' 😂 every chance he got lol. I remember it at the time and it was hilarious 😂

Thanks for making these --- that clip of RP in the intro trying to explain why Jones was 'excluded' --- by body language it seems he was covering his real feelings - and it makes me wonder --- sure does
Gold Comment right here. Absolutely and the fact they didn't collab with him on their solo ventures proves it.Jones' solo albums are Incredible! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
@@stoneylonesome5826 P7P w/o JPP is not great. But w/o John Bonham, there is no LZ creative force, just a cover band. That said, I am very thankful for the collaboration with Jason for the O2 concert. The best recorded live version of Kashmir. Shame on Led Zeppelin for not recording some '77 shows. Some of those '77 shows were pretty fine.
So happy to read this Matt, it was a treat to revisit the material, the album is dangerously good. Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
This album had some great moments..the drum mix was always my biggest issue. Denny deserved better ..he’s a fine drummer. If this album had Cozy Powell low end punch..wow!
Absolutely, if this had the Cozy Powell punch of Robert's first album imagine...Denny is a great drummer, people shouldn't criticize his drum sound based on the album! Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
I met David Coverdale at a bar in Miami in 1992 while i was vacationing. I didn't know it at the time, but he was in town recording with Jimmy for the Coverdale/Page album, where vocals and overdubs were recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami. Anyway, I think i was the only fanboy that recognized David, and I went up to him and said, "Mr. Coverdale, I'm a big fan of yours, i just wanted to say hi." He shook my hand, and we chit-chatted a bit. Very cool fellow.
Wow, that's such a cool story. Jorge Casas on bass was most likely there too. You were very respectful in your approach when meeting him! Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuner for Episode 4!
JCM! You finally made it to Coverdale-Page & what a nice job showcasing a great collaboration and album! My extra thoughts are with the John Kalodner connection I can hear the later Aerosmith production, especially with “Rag Doll” drum tone/sound. Also on “Easy Does It” which is my fav track, I think Page may be playing in the same tuning as “Friends” which Ive always loved Pages alternate tunings. The light and shade elements on the music with a beautiful lyric and all around great performance from all. Dude… I had no idea there were songs left off, we need a remaster expanded edition asap- Peace from your friend Von, well… KJ bahah😊
You are right on the money with the Kalodner influence, pretty sure he got his hands dirty in the mixing stages. I will buy the expanded edition if it ever comes out, no matter the price, shut up and take my money as they say hehe. Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. I bought this album when it was released. As a lifelong Zep fan I loved this album from the first play through. Excellent songs, excellent guitar work, excellent production and of course excellent vocals by David Coverdale. Love it ❤....and still do 👍
Absolutely, this albums ROCKS. It's incredible it got criticized back then by some Zeppelin fans. Jimmy played Brilliantly. Plant couldn't admit this. Thank YOU very much for watching and supporting this project!

Hey DeepZepp thanks for you watching this episode. Hope you enjoy all other episodes from this 1990s series, i cover the album's release and subsequent Japanese Tour 1993. I have my critics towards David's antics in Japan but trust me, i admire him as a performer, 100%.
Great episode. I received this album for my birthday last year. I think we can all agree that it's the best work Jimmy Page has done since Led Zeppelin. My favorites on this album are Shake My Tree, Whisper a Prayer for the Dying and It's Over Now. The stories behind those songs were quite interesting. And the demonstration on how much better Shake My Tree could've been w/better production was absolutely stunning. A non-music professional like me had no idea how much difference production could make. I think their collaboration was like lightening in a bottle. The one album was amazing for what it was but I'm not sure another collaboration would've been as magical.
Hey Kimberly, what an awesome birthday gift, i played this one today and it's so good right? Glad you enjoyed my re-imagination of Shake My Tree, the song is KILLER. Thank YOU so much for watching this one, Episodes 4, 5 and 6 are out now too if you want to enjoy the rest of this Coverdale-Page story :)
"Shake My Tree" was a fave of mine back then. I figured the beginning of the post-Zep time had to begin with Page and Plant getting their solo/duo acts going.
Page states that Bonzo was the only one who got that riff....and you do a damned fine job of making us wish we knew what could have been. JCM another solid and wonderful effort! Thank you!
Thank you so much Steven! I believe Bonzo was Page's musical soulmate, no question. His groove and passion makes guitar riffing so much fun...i really understand Jimmy's Post Led Zeppelin battles, it must have been overwhelming at times. Stick around for Episode 4 coming up July 22nd!
Glad you highlighted the outtake "Saccharine"; according to Coverdale, a lot of those sketches that wound up on later Whitesnake & solo albums were meant for a second Coverdale-Page album; too bad there's no firm plans for a remaster/remix deluxe edition of the album
That riff is a beast, it's so heavy i think many metal bands wished they came up with it. A remix/remaster is a tricky process, Page won't agree that easily...Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!

TY sir. You rock. Imagine my disappointment several months ago when I went to download this album on Spotify and it wasn't there... I still check now and then to see if it gets added, but no, not yet. Of course, I'll keep checking. just. in. case. Keep them coming, my friend!
Hey man, thank YOU for watching. I know right, the album not being available on Spotify is a bummer. That speaks volumes of the publishing side of things. Remember King Crimson got their albums up just recently. TO be honest, as a musician myself, Spotify pays crappy returns on plays, even for big label artists. C/P are better off reissuing the material.
Haha Jose LOVE your embellishment of "Shake your Tree". Very cool. Always thought the drums were toned down ...... "mid"ish. A missed opportunity for some chest thump.
Hey man, so COOL to read you enjoyed this one! I want to re-record the entire album...it deserves a proper drum sound, we'll see if a friend i know is up for it :) Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!

Hi JCM, thanks again for another fine work. Hugh Syme not only was Rush's cover man, he contributed early keyboard efforts before Lee took over. The little acknowledged but beautiful Different Strings off Permanent Waves has some tasteful Syme input along with some of course great Lifeson sailing. I know you mentioned you were going to catch Plant / Krauss. I didn't get to the Toronto show. I was talking to a music friend over the weekend. She caught the show but said she was disappointed and that I didn't miss anything. She said Plant literally played second fiddle to Krauss. It would be interesting to hear the opinions on this matter by any of the fine listeners out there. Everybody, enjoy the week, cheers!
Wow that's an incredible bit of info on Hugh, thank you for sharing. I really like Grace Under Pressure for some reason. Excellent! This album caught me right out of the gate and though I liked a few songs... Some of it didn't connect with me. I would go back to the songs I liked for years. Then, I really dove into it and realized how much more of it I liked. Your detailed breakdown is excellent and much appreciated.
Hope you are doing well! Thank you very much for watching! Revisiting this one was special, i still can't connect with Take A Look At Yourself, but the album as a whole, quite an experience, it's Hard Rocking! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
Paul Rees wrote that Robert Plant was pushed out to the fringes, in the States in particular, when Fate of Nations barely reached the Top 40 there, while the Coverdale & Page record got a Top 5 in 1993 Billboard. Plant himself reckoned stabbing backs 5 years later: “Well, that record certainly trumped my samples... I burbled out all sorts of garbage about it but it seems rather cute looking back.”
Hey JCM, I had a security issue with my credit card on patreon, just wanted to let you know I'm going to take care of this later on tonight with new credit card information to keep my patreon active with you, absolutely love this Coverdale Page video !!!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories it had nothing to do with you or with your patreon, it had to do with something else when I try to make a purchase and it was a fraudulent site so I had to get a replacement credit card, some point very late tonight I will change the information to keep my subscription with you current.
Brilliant work as usual, Jose! I especially enjoyed your jam! No question that Jimmy smoked Robert out and used the jealousy factor to get him to tour in the mid '90's. Your videos are very pro. Ty Sir! Ernie
Ernie! What's happening man! So cool to read your comment. Thank you very much. I am excited to do Episode 5 soon...i found some interesting things that will kinda Justifiy Robert Plant...imagine that!
In 1996, my band was doing our demo tape at Granny’s House, a small studio that was located south west of Reno. It’s a famous studio for having recorded Milli Vanilli‘s first album along with a horde of other bands who had minor hits in the 90s. I ran into David Coverdale, in one of the smaller studio rooms, using a smaller audio board to check out the dynamics for his next solo record. When he was in that room while talking with another engineer, they were playing an unmixed copy of the song, “ Pride and Joy, “ from that Coverdale Page record. It sounded FAR different than the CD mix that came out years earlier. I actually asked the engineer later on what mix that song came from and he said it was a selection of mixes from a tape that David uses to test the dynamics of certain audio boards. To this very day, I can still remember how amazing that tune sounded coming out of the monitors. It sounded way better than the actual album from which it was released.
OMG...this is a GOLD COMMENT. So it proves the theory of the mixing issue with the final product. Do you think they sacrificed too much of the low end? Why though right? I think making room for ALL THE LAYERS they had? This is an incredible story, thank you for sharing! Episode 4 is out now. Stay Tuned for Episode 5 going back to 1993!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I do remember that there was no harmonica solo, just parts of guitars that were swirling within the mix. My thinking was that they had that as a track with a focus on Jimmy’s playing. When I talked with the engineer, there was already enough guitar playing on the track itself. Hence the reason why they used the harmonica. I vaguely remember someone saying that the songs they did were mostly focused on the guitars and the drums. But I don’t remember if there was any mention on the mastering process, which, at that time was a controversial move, because mastering tech hadn’t used anything beyond 8 bit technology. If you’re not familiar with the mastering process, back then, for CDs, because of the limited bandwidth, most of the mastering process used a lot of compression, which squeezed out a lot of the higher frequencies ( such as the sound of a ride symbol, or a high hat ) as well as parts of the lower frequencies. It was only recently when David Coverdale had said that he and Jimmy were talking about releasing the album, since some of the masters have been found after that fire, which is mentioned in your video. So I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear that track on an upcoming release, celebrating the anniversary of the record. It’s an outstanding record and, because I have studied Jimmy’s guitar playing from the mid 70s on, there’s a lot of really great guitar parts on that album with parts similar to “ Presence “ and some of the tracks from “ Coda. “
Dude absolutely there's Presence Coda moments in Jimmy's playing. 100%. I am aware of the mastering process you mention but then again Mr Bungle's records sound great and it has a lot of layers! I think the label and management had something to do with the final product. The Aerosmith Get a Grip influence is there. Your insight is Incredible. Thank you so much!
Another great one, thanks man. I am constantly amazed by how deep you dig to find out little tidbits of information (for example the Zep meeting mentioned early in the video). Great job with the JCM track in this one. Really enjoyed it....impressive arrangement, mix and edits. Definitely agree with your assessment of this record, although I found myself contemplating an alternate timeline where Page hooked up with Allison Kraus and T-Bone Burnett and made this into a folk record. Some of these songs would work better in that format than in this ridiculous early 90s/late 80s style production. Catch ya on the flip-flop! Keep up the great work!
Hey Dave! First off, glad you enjoyed this one, it was so much fun to research, then not so much fun to edit...and then some hehe. I like your alternate timeline, that would've been a killer record. You know, if Jones, Page and Plant got together they should do an all-acoustic album. We can dream right? Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 4 coming up soon!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories An acoustic album would be an excellent swan song for those guys. Bonus points if Jonesy cuts it on his laptop Pro Tools rig himself (I assume he's got one and knows how to use it). Stoked for whatever you've got down the track!
I remember loving Coverdale Page when it came out. And thinking that Robert, God bless him, would not be able to match Coverdale's vocals. I remember reading the David "cover version" by Robert. I thought it was a snarky comment. It really was radical that Jimmy ended up working with him. I like shake my tree
The irritating thing is, Coverdale doesn't even sound like Plant on it... He sounds like himself throughout most of that thing, obviously Page's writing style would bring a dose of Zeppelin into the mix but the 'Coverversion' insults have always felt insincere to me.
Whats up with the Coverdale interviews last year saying he proposed a boxset for this album where they would do a jimmy page mix and a coverdale mix of the album... didnt he get the memo that the original tapes are not there anymore? or am I missing something. Also great reference to Arnold's last action hero.. Thank you for all the joy you bring us with those docs
Majed! Hey man how are you! So David's referring to the fact that he has persona copies of the masters, i believe they are digital transfers (we don't know the sample rate). The main issue i see with a deluxe edition release is clearing out the legal aspects of it in terms of publishing rights. Jimmy is after all one of the hardest musicians to negotiate with...he wants big money and i am sure a C/P Box Set would be a niche market release at this point. Thank YOU so much for watching!
Thank you covering this album.I’ve always thought the drums on C.P was generally too loud. ‘Over Now’ is my favourite because of the space in the song’s arrangement. ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ has the space and necessary dynamics from JP & DC. I hope a rumoured 30 th Anniversary mix is more sympathetic overall. Along the inclusion of the best performances from C/P’s live shows from their Japanese tour.
@@johnnywomack548 completely - that’s probably why he got jobs in that era because he sounded stiff like a drum machine. Producers and label people had too much influence on that stuff by that time.
Is it just my great stereo? Shake my tree..the mix is loud and flawless when the rhythm section comes in. Bass, treble, mids, all of it. Absolution..same. Whisper, the last song, is totally perfect. The producer was the best you could get on Earth for this album from 2 legends. Peace out from Taipei today.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I agree about 'spoiled ears.' For drumming on this planet, there is Bonham and then way, way down... all the rest. These JCM Production videos are easily the best on TH-cam. I am a big Page fan..I even like his skiffle stuff.Thank you for your hard work. My preferences...the opening of "Whisper" and the Live version by Heart of Stairway with Zep watching. Is that a tear in Mr. Plant's eye? Peace out from Taipei today.
The problems are caused by some 80s relicts: gated reverb, drums's EQ is shifted to mids-treble, so not much definition if the bass drum (its higher register sounds are overlapped with other instruments). Plus, the bassist is too low in the mix, IMO. The last two features kill the groove that we expect from heavy blues (and is there in Cream, LZ, etc). Same problems, even stronger, in Slip of the Tongue - which mixed exactly in 80's fashion: treble-heavy, bass drum lacks attack, bassist is inaudible.
Jose, AWESOME episode man. I was looking forward to this one. Your Shake My Tree jam was sick. I love the wicked sick punchy Bonzo groove with the drums. Very cool! Coverdale and Chris Cornell I think have similar voices. I can hear the similarities with Over Now and the sound as well. This album rocks. I loved it when it came out for all the obvious reasons, that it filled a void for me and I was living in the past. It did get lost in the weeds of the time with all the other great albums that came out around that time. Awesome tribute man. Good for you for putting in this work. Can’t wait for Unleaded!!!❤😮😊
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode Matt. Working out Shake my Tree with Bonzo was quite an emotional moment let me tell you. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations! Unledded is closer..we're getting there.
Hi Jose! Excellent episode as always. Honestly speaking, I'm not a Coverdale fan but Jimmy is Jimmy, my most beloved guitarist. They performed in Tokyo, I think it was December 1993, I was a kid so I couldn't watch it but I remember people's comments “Coverdale has a very good voice and stage presence but something is missing…it lacks that almost palpable chemistry that we felt between the four Zeppelins”. There were a some music critics among these people, and they had all seen a lot of Zepp shows, I suppose they had their reasons for these opinions. I'm not a Coverdale fan, as I said before, but I respect his work. Looking forward for the next episode, see ya!
Marcia, you address a very important part of the story which of course i will discuss on Episode 5. The video footage of these shows was so uncomfortable to revisit. We share the same opinion. I think they should have done Deep Purple numbers instead of Zeppelin you know? Not sure why they did Kashmir ughhh. Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuner for Episode 4 on The Making of Fate of Nations!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I read somewhere that Jimmy would like to play a smaller venue, a more intimate show but DC didn’t want to because it didn’t “suit his talent”. I don’t know if it’s true but if he really said it then I can say that his ego was bigger than his talent LOL if Jimmy Page, the living guitar legend, the genius who shaped Led Zeppelin, if Jimmy wanted it, then DC was a pretentious arrogant. Maybe I’m too radical but I can’t stand to hear other guys singing Zeppelin songs. I love those shows where Jimmy plays STH and only the crowd sings 😊 Note: my mum is a Deep Purple fan, she loves Gillan and she can’t stand Coverdale 😅
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode Brian. Maybe we should record this one hehe :) Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations, it's 1992 Robert Plant coming up!
Outstanding job and work on this one! One thing , well there’s multiple things, your documentaries are always so full of detail and information that I always walk away with something new that I’ve learned. Thank you for taking time to create this commentary on Coverdale Page. I actually had tickets for their concert here in Memphis Tennessee and unfortunately it got canceled. Little did I know I’d see Jimmy Page in concert with Robert Plant a year later. I’m looking forward to your other episodes. Will you also be doing one on walking into clarksdale ? I would really love to hear and see your perspective on that album.Thank you for these amazing documents.
Wow Paul you had tickets for Coverdale/Page, man it's a shame they got cancelled, but as you will see on Episode 5 for 1993...there where many reasons. Editing this program was quite a treat and a challenge, which is something the 90s series has because there's SO much information i want to keep things linear so we don't miss a beat as they say. Glad you feel you've learned something new, the idea revisiting these is just that, add more to the story and analyze the context as much as possible. I can't stop listening to the album now, i really like it. I will do Walking into Clarksdale yes, and although i've listened to it before of course, i am keeping it away from me until i work on the Episode for it, this way i keep my ears fresh to carefully dissect the material :) Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
Your additions to Shake my Tree would have sold them more records and would have gotten more air time, and thereby sold more tickets. You have your nose in their recipe book. I love what you are doing. You have a future in the studio. Thank you. When I listened to the record when it first came out, I imagined contributing many parts that my ears wanted to hear, but just weren't on the record, so I know where you are coming from about wanting to punch it up into something more compelling and powerful. Maybe when someone does a cover version, they can add more sauce and spice?
So what are you saying? haha. I hope you enjoyed this one, recording the guitar bits was exciting, Bonham really makes riffing so pleasant! Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
Remasters was the first cd I ever owned! It took me a long time to accept the move from vinyl to disc, and the Remasters of Led Zepplin was the start of that acceptance.
A great place to start a CD collection, George Marino's mastering really made these quite a TREASURE! Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 4 coming up soon!
I caught the outrider tour in Atlanta was not disappointed. His pedal board went out, he kicked it off the front of the stage picked up a acoustic guitar and played one of the best songs he never recorded. His tech was red in the face. OMFG!❤
Omg, poor Guitar Tech, he probably felt his job was gone. I saw Jimmy's massive pedalboard from that era, did it need to be so huge? lol. Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4 premieres July 22nd!
I always liked Shake my tree but also thought the bass and drums sounded really weak. Your version is awesome. It really reinforces how great John Bonham was and how great of a groove he had
Bonham was such an integral part of Jimmy's sound and vision, it really cannot be said enough, Led Zeppelin was a Drum and Guitar soulmate thing. I am glad you enjoyed this version, editing this episode was SO MUCH FUN! Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 4 coming up soon!
Coverdale /Page is Jimmy's BEST post Zep.. and it's not close makes Walking into Clarksdale look like a solo Plant album which basically was except Page played guitar pretty well . Plant came calling to you calling to you Jimmy Page in Japan and all concerts were over with Coverdale . Am I glad yes Cause Plant and Page again back together just wish Page and Coverdale had a chance to tour America. Then we get the Page / Plant tours and album but I just miss seeing Jimmy out and Playing again . Good job Jose 👍🏼
Man Walking into Clarksdale is a mess yeah hehe, i look forward to talking about THAT record. Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
I heared the Page Coverdale record and the Page Plant studio record very late, like 3 years ago, and I don't know why I didn't get into both records, pandemic histeria? 😂😂 Now with this analysis I will hear it again! Thanks for the video!
This album turned me on to Coverdale. I knew Zep, knew what they looked like, and when I saw the debut video Pride & Joy on MTV I thought it was Robert & Jimmy together again. I knew Whitesnake, but the music was so different and I was so young I didn't realize it was the same voice/person. There was no real way to check in pre-internet world of who sang a song. I may have gone to the mall to check out the Billboard charts, but Coverdale & Page might not have meant anything to me. I didn't know if the song was new or old, just I loved what I'd heard with all the guitars and the vocals, and it sounded like a new Zep. So, since it sounded like Zep, it must be a reunion of Zep! If you don't know the name of a band how do you find the album? And, you think its Robert Plant? Over the next 6 months I was tuned to MTV as much as my parents would allow, glanced at the music magazines at Newstand International (RIP) for any sighting of Jimmy (as I knew it was Jimmy) and I would take all my money and buy every Robert Plant album, cause it had to be him! We'd go to a different city and I'd request to hit the music store, in case there was an album I missed by Plant I'd missed (again, no way to really know what albums existed, since you couldn't dial up a discography and Led Zep bios were old). I discovered all of Robert's solo career in 6 months LOL and didn't hear the song I'd heard on MTV! It was so frustrating and meant there had to be another Plant album out there! Finally it came back on MTV and I caught the name Coverdale. I bought it immediately and ended up loving the whole thing. Actually, Pride & Joy is great, but I like other songs from it far better. I loved the gutsy blues. I would end up checking out other things by Coverdale and discovering discovering he was the Whitesnake guy. I think this is one of the best albums by Coverdale & any of the Zep guys post-Zep. Not to be overlooked. Certainly better than Outrider & the Firm. Decades later in 2023 I still listen to this album and love.
This is such an awesome recollection of events. I miss the pre-Internet or Little Internet days to DISCOVER albums. I can sense the urgency in your writing, trying to find out who an artist is, yeah, it's a tough one, specially when they seem to be similar visually speaking. Coverdale/Page as a whole, was a GREAT album and i hope this documentary added to that truth. It bothers me that many Zeppelin fans dismiss it despite Jimmy's exceptional guitar work and Coverdale singing with every ounce of POWER he had. To know this was your road to the album makes me smile and it's an honor to have you experience this documentary made by a fan to fans! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 5 Premieres July 29th.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories "This is such an awesome recollection of events." I'm was a big Yes fan. I remember picking up Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe on cassette at Kmart not knowing they were Yes. I later brought (at a yard sale!) the LP of Close To The Edge. I sat on my bed reading the liner notes and there's the name Anderson and Wakeman and Howe and Bruford. What the heck? Its the same band! Thus to the record store looking for Yes albums! I used to also find musicians via books. My mom bought me a book on the history of the blues and I would write down the name of any artist of interest and then look for their albums, often cheap at the record store. Today? Wiki and you know everything. Though, really, folks don't. I knew a guy who took a date to see Roger Waters The Wall tour. She had downloaded the songs, but had no clue they told a story or were part of the same album! Its a different world of music. On the other hand, via youtube I've saved myself buying some bad albums or one great song with 9 songs of filler. LOL
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories "Coverdale/Page as a whole, was a GREAT album and i hope this documentary added to that truth." I've watched so many of your videos. Your whole channel is great. I shared a bit with a friend - Jean Violet - the frontman of the Led Zep tribute band Kashmir, now going on 20+ years (and including bassist Felix Hanneman of Zebra and formerly guitarist Fred Gorhau now of Wizards of Winter.). He wrote his memoir of being a singer in NYC, touring with a Japanese band and then forming Kashmir called "In The Shadow Of The Gods - The Memoir Of a Led Zeppelin Tribute Band Singer", the only memoir of life playing Robert Plant and one of the few cover band memoirs. At this point, I'm just bragging, as I'm the co-author. I turned his stories into a book. So, in writing it, to get into his head, I listened to ALL of Led Zeppelin - to the point where now I can't. Their MTV reunion, solo stuff, but if they come on the radio I change channels LOL aaronjoyauthor.weebly.com/musicbio.html#/
I was really looking forward to seeing them in concert, but the tour ended before they came my way. I hope get into the details of how the tour came apart in part 2.
Can't wait to share the details on the 1993 part of the story...it gets fascinating. So much to cover....or should i say coverdale? hehe. Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 4 coming up soon!
In the interviews with Coverdale, JPP has the look of someone who misses his old girlfriend. The spark isn’t there. The live Plant/Page version of Shake My Tree feels like a lost LZ track. RP must have known JPP worked best by collaborating with John Bonham.
That's a good way to put it, Jimmy misses the good old days, i bet Remasters was a painful reminder you know? I agree the live Shake my Tree with Plant is a lost Zepp track, it's such a powerful track damn it! Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
That sounds like a good name. I believe they should have recorded a second album UGHHH! So frustrating hehe. Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 4 coming up soon!
JCM, I LOVE this album!! As I comented in your previous video, Coverdale And Page came with a BANG in the 1990's!!! ALL tracks are fantastic, but... you know 😂😂😂every time I listen to "Take A Look At Yourself", I always remember my beloved Ana Carolina. We met in the 8th grade at school. We were 14yo at that time (we're born in the same year, 1995). Maybe 😂😂😂I'm the last of the romantics... what can I do? That's the way my parents raised me!
Hey Iki, no problem being a romantic, i understand what you mean. Take a Look at Yourself has an honest intention but my God the arrangement and playing was so far away from the rest of the album hahahah. You were born in 1995? Cool, i am a bit older than you. Trust me i had a crush in high school, for years i thought of her, but "our song" was Still Loving You by Scorpions.
Coverdale page album rocks I still play it regularly.
You know it! A classic album 100% Thank YOU for watching this episode!
David's delivery on this album is up there with all his solo and whitesnake efforts, deserves to be praised.
This, I don't get the criticism. He is intelligent, charismatic and thoughtful, what's the problem?
I need this video like JCM needs another copy of In Through the Out Door.
Haha, I see what you did there
If there’s ever to be a shortage of copies of “In Through The Out Door” at least we know who to blame.
Yet, here we are, watching this awesome content.
Hahaha you know it! Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
Criminally underrated album
Omg that cover you did was AWESOME!
Coverdale should do that as he’s now retired and has the time. And don’t think Jimmy is interested.
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 there’s an interview from a couple of years ago where Jimmy said he’s working on it and Coverdale too. Jimmy has been promising new music since 2014 and playing live. None of its happened so we can hope
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
One of the best albums ever made.
In my opinion, this is the best album jimmy page has ever released. Coverdale is truly his voice and makes Robert Plant look like an amateur.

Thanks, brilliant work as ever Jose! That Faith No More cover of Stairway was brutal!! Thankfully they never butchered another Zep classic!
Thanks a lot! Glad you read you enjoyed that Faith no more bit, it was quite a journey to find it hehe. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
I think it was a joke
Awesome review of this album! I've revisited this album many times over the years and always find something new in the songs. I agree the mix is very vocal/guitar heavy. A current remix would be welcomed to my old ears. Thanks JCM for all the research and love you create with these mini documentaries.
Glad you enjoyed it! I want to re-record the album from scratch...i can dream right? But it is possible, just lots of patience needed. A remix could only work if Coverdale's personal digital transfers are in good shape. Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
Loved it then .... Still do. Wish they'd done more together. Excellent retrospective ..... Thank you Sir
You and me both! It's one of the greatest WHAT IFs in Page's solo career.
Another fantastic episode. Thank you so much! 🌹
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode Jeremy. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
Whatever the hell this is it sounds like crap

Thanks for making these --- that clip of RP in the intro trying to explain why Jones was 'excluded' --- by body language it seems he was covering his real feelings - and it makes me wonder --- sure does
I think the creative musical failure of anything post Zeppelin, of Page & Plant, really highlights the importance of John Paul Jones

IMO, JPJ was the glue that held Zeppelin together. And as talented as all 4 of them were, they really did work best together.

Ive been waiting for this for years
Hope you enjoy this one! Thank you for watching!
Dude… I had no idea there were songs left off, we need a remaster expanded edition asap-
Peace from your friend Von, well… KJ bahah😊
You are right on the money with the Kalodner influence, pretty sure he got his hands dirty in the mixing stages. I will buy the expanded edition if it ever comes out, no matter the price, shut up and take my money as they say hehe. Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
This album rocked dude. I get the critiques but I really liked it.
It rocks HARD, i can't stop listening to it now!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories - thank you , that will be awesome!!
Amazing! Thanks brother.
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
Love what you did with the Bonzo beat in Shake My Tree. Nice solo over it too. Your videos rock!
Thank you man! Soloing over a Bonzo driven groove is such a treat, man was Jimmy spoiled in Zeppelin hehe.
I saw Plant and Page do Shake my Tree back in 1996. It was great.
A killer tour, you are a very lucky man! Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuner for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
The album was definitely better than I thought it would be,thanks for bringing it back to my attention.
My pleasure Jeremy, i can't stop playing it now, going for a walk listening to this is an energy boost to say the least. Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!
I really enjoyed this. And you being a Led Zeppelin channel, I'm so pleased that you've given Coverdale a fair shake (pun not intended). Great work.
Hey DeepZepp thanks for you watching this episode. Hope you enjoy all other episodes from this 1990s series, i cover the album's release and subsequent Japanese Tour 1993. I have my critics towards David's antics in Japan but trust me, i admire him as a performer, 100%.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories No problem. I’m really enjoying your work. Saving one for every evening this week. Thanks a lot 👍🏻
Well done my friend!
Kellie! So nice to read you! Hope you are doing great. Editing this one was a challenge :) Glad you enjoyed it. There's so much more coming up!
Nice job JCM
OMG Conney Fogle! Thank YOU so much for tuning in, quite an honor really. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series too.

This is one album that I really didn't know much about, other than "Pride and Joy". Once again, very informative video.
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!

Outstanding album. When two legends obviously meet, the offspring is this album.
I still enjoy listening to this masterpiece.
It is a masterpiece, nothing like Jimmy rocking like only HE CAN!

At that time , Page stated in interviews he employed a Digitech GSP-21 Guitar processor direct to board for many Coverdale-Page tracks
Thank you for this bit, it adds up to the end result most definitely. The attention to detail on his guitars was one of a kind!
Paul Rees wrote that Robert Plant was pushed out to the fringes, in the States in particular, when Fate of
Nations barely reached the Top 40 there, while the Coverdale & Page record got a Top 5 in 1993 Billboard. Plant himself reckoned stabbing backs 5 years later: “Well, that record certainly trumped my samples... I burbled out all sorts of garbage about it but it seems rather cute looking back.”
This is great stuft. Thank you for sharing this! :)
Hey JCM, I had a security issue with my credit card on patreon, just wanted to let you know I'm going to take care of this later on tonight with new credit card information to keep my patreon active with you, absolutely love this Coverdale Page video !!!

Has David Coverdale ever done the narration for an audiobook lol? Because he should.
Lol, that's a good idea. He should do it. Slip of the Book maybe? Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 4 coming up soon!
His voice would be perfect for that, he did those narrated bits on Steve Vai's album and they were just as gorgeous as you'd expect.
I love waiting on you, its a fun open tuning song to play
You're right, it's a fun song to play, it has a very catchy hook!
I enjoyed that last 45 minutes listening to your video . Thank you :-)
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
Shake my Tree is a KILLER song, any way you look at it!
Carmassi not an exciting choice. About as unimaginative as possible with that “Heart” / big hair drum sound. Ugh.
Carmassi's drumming didn't fit well in that band. He sounded stiff, like a drum machine. They needed a drummer with some swing in his playing.
@@johnnywomack548 completely - that’s probably why he got jobs in that era because he sounded stiff like a drum machine. Producers and label people had too much influence on that stuff by that time.
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuned for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
I love the album, don't get me wrong, but after Bonham, our ears are spoiled for "Earthy drums" :) Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuner for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
Thanks.@@kirildimitrov1434
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
I read somewhere that Jimmy would like to play a smaller venue, a more intimate show but DC didn’t want to because it didn’t “suit his talent”. I love those shows where Jimmy plays STH and only the crowd sings 😊
Note: my mum is a Deep Purple fan, she loves Gillan and she can’t stand Coverdale 😅

Dude you rock out! I ain't saying shut up and play-but....
So what are you saying? haha. I hope you enjoyed this one, recording the guitar bits was exciting, Bonham really makes riffing so pleasant! Thank you so much for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 4!

Great Album with good songs and great musical moments on it.......
Glad you enjoyed this very special episode. Thank you very much for watching. Stay tuner for Episode 4 on the Making of Fate of Nations!
I remember a radio interview where Page and Coverdale stated they were actually going to call the band “The Last Resort” for obvious reasons
That sounds like a good name. I believe they should have recorded a second album UGHHH! So frustrating hehe. Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 4 coming up soon!
That Coverdale/page album is great for a debut album. To an 11/12 year old kid, shake my tree was like having a new zep song.
