It's very interesting to revisit in hindsight... In my wholehearted honest opinion, the idea of hearing these two icons together whilst they could still really sing and play is something I'm glad happened rather than not, regardless of any constructive criticism... However DC is between songs shouldn't detract from his ability to sing them technically well and with conviction.
The most tasteless thing I find is RP being negative and insultive whilst pretending he's got nothing to say. DC ain't a bad guy and he's certainly never been a bad singer.
In 2023, we're a million miles from this kind of magic. That's the real tragedy.
I love all involved. Always will.

My gawd, the “state” of “music” , today? …???….. utter , absolute, undeniable foretelling sign that Jesus is lacing up his sandals and preparing to come back. The level of complete embarrassment and shame is apparently lost on and over the heads of most people 35 and younger - especially Gen Z (God , please come back before they’re at the age of taking on important positions of influence, like politics etc.)
I think I’m about as disgusted with modern “music” , and that industry, as I am with bloated global organizations (WHO , CDC, IMF, UN) and career politicians !!

You are right that Robert's bashing of DC is tasteless. It seemed excessive as if his management got the media involved in this tactic? Coverdale helped Unledded happen in more ways than people realize. Page and Plant had a weird relationship for sure. Thank you so much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 7.

Excellent video. It is important to note that while Robert was right that David was not the right vocalist for Zeppelin's songs, Coverdale brought a totally forgotten Jimmy out of oblivion. I remember that in those years Page was seen as an anachronistic musician compared to Steve Vai and other guitar heroes of the moment. I think Coverdale managed to put Page under musical pressure again and be the counterpart to inspire Jimmy compose excellent material again.
I also remember that on the Page-Plant tour, Robert sang "Shake my tree". His performance was not even comparable to that of Coverdale. The conlusion was that their styles were so different that it wasn't possible for one to sing the other's songs.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I'm sure Coverdale could have found some other easier Zeppelin songs to sing, but Jimmy's gotta be able to bring it to the stage also. 3 or 4 songs from their past each isn;t a huge problem, when they have 1 album and 8 songs to work with, of course past songs came into the show, 8 songs would be a very short show.

9:00 - I can't tell anything is off. Coverdale sounds great from what I can tell from the audio. He's hitting every note, and if you look at Coverdale's voice career, that's right at the top of his range. He didn't used to sing that high until around the 1980's. The singer he was on BURN, was long gone. You got to give him credit, cuz he is doing justice to the song. He could probably hit it better than Plant could in 1993.

As usual Jose you have nailed it. Revisiting Coverdale Page as I have throughout your musical recanting journey. Has given me an excuse to replay all of this material. My vinyl has long been sold off, so its mainly cd and a few cassettes. After a few plays I was done with Coverdale Page, its the best Jimmy had played for years but not a great album. The live clips you showed were how I had had heard the gigs went down in Japan. When asked in one interview, Jimmy said there was too much swearing! DC can be an acquired taste. I saw him in Whitesnake circa 1980 he was good, but can be deemed a bit of a shouter. Glenn Hughes was a perfect fit for him and kept his vocal under stretched. In 1993 I was in Spain, Robert headlined the Xacobeo Festival. I did not go but the album was all over the radio and TV. Great memories for me. 29 Palms certainly got some air time. I think along with The Mighty Rearranger, Fate of Nations is his finest work, but that's just my honest opinion. DC obviously got under his skin and made him revisit Zeppelin, which gave another generation a chance to see a sort of Led Zeppelin. Keep it up JCM its outstanding work.

DC sounds eloquent and almost speaks the Queens (now King's) English - almost like BBC folks and Tom Baker. The one blaring exception is he drops a lot of F-bombs as well as other profane words. It was quite jarring the first few times I heard it - hearing potty mouth expletives with what is usually a very eloquent and proper accent. His expletives would be more comfortable with a Cockney twang, but that wouldn't be David Coverdale. LOL.

Plant’s disrespect for a former Deep Purple singer really rubs me the wrong way. What would Plant have said about Ian Gillian or Glenn Hughes? I’ll criticize Coverdale on some things, but for Plant to do it so vocally, at that time, seems extremely petty to me. Besides, Coverdale’s voice was really strong at this time. Both Plant and Coverdale are baritones. Coverdale, a lower baritone. Despite that, Coverdale’s range was superior to Plant’s at this time. You’re right, JCM. They should have played some Deep Purple. I also agree that his stage banter was unfortunate.

    • @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories

The irony here, was that Robert Plant attended Deep Purple's 1975 California Rehearsals with TOMMY BOLIN as a spectator when Zeppelin was staying over in Malibu. I think the whole beef started once Coverdale got 1987 RICH. Thanks for your comment Steve, it's spot on!

C/P ended because they failed three times to successfully launch a US tour and the album quickly sank from the charts. Jimmy was keen to play anywhere, but David insisted on an arena tour. It was the height of the grunge music era and that level of demand for tickets just wasn't there. Everyone points to the initial chart success of the album, but what they overlook is that after a few weeks it dropped like a rock. In other words, everyone who wanted it went out and got it. They did not gain new listeners despite Geffen spending a fortune to promote the album. In October 1993, Robert invited Jimmy to collaborate on what became the Unledded project, and that sealed the fate of C/P. The label put the Japan tour together to try to recoup on their investment and as a consolation to C/P, who still wanted an opportunity to perform the material live. However, Jimmy knew before it began that the end of the tour would also be the end of C/P. He probably told David, though I can't say for sure.

I don't really see Jimmy as slumming it with Still of the Night. John Sykes was a super talented guitarist and honestly his work with Whitesnake and Blue Murder is far more interesting than Jimmy's on Outrider. If anything, he was slumming it more by playing the Black Crowes songs, which I mostly like but feel have pretty generic guitar parts.
I don't think Jimmy really had the kind of ego to worry about that so much as he was worried about his chances of getting back together with Robert. And I think it's worse when artists refuse to play the songs the fans are hoping to see. Such as The Firm not doing any Bad Company or Led Zep tunes.

Great work as always Jose! I have always struggled with the reunion concept and Led Zeppelin in the 90s. Following John's passing, on one hand I would have loved more shows like the O2 to get the chance to see them live and perhaps an album or two of new work. However their body of work before John's passing was, is and will always remain a staggering accomplishment. So at the risk of diminishing and putting out stuff that is not up to par perhaps the decision to work separately with collective select contribution was for the better of their legacy. Thank you again

Led Zeppelin's body of work is honored by tribute acts like the great Jimmy Sakurai for example with the advantage of not being the actual surviving members you knokw? Wow! Lots to unpack here. Absolutely excellent production and content. We’ll done as always Jose.❤ 2 episodes!!! Nice!!! Love it!!!! I love your running order for the box set. I’m setting it on my zep playlist. Excellent order. I like it. I didn’t know Guy Pratt was their bassist. I love Guy from Floyd and Gilmore. The Coverdale/Page live set list seems exhausting! Lots of of hard tunes to perform. It’s a heavy load. I AM HOLDING MY SEAT FOR UNLEADED!!!!!😮

Not sure i can 2 episodes per weekend, but for this 1993 part of the story i had to. So glad to read you enjoyed these. Let me know how Boxed Set 2 sounds like with the proposed running order. Guy's work with Floyd was superb, not sure he was the right guy (pun intended) for Page. Jimmy needs more presence i guess, Pratt is more of a darker sound i believe. Man...Unledded is staring at me "can you handle this"? lol. Hope i live up to the expectations! Stay Safe Matt!

I bought it on CD when it was new, and still have it. Its a fantastic album and I REALLY looked forward to seeing it performed, and was depressed I never got to. Let's not forget, before he was a session's Guitarist, Jimmy was in Neil Christian's Crusaders. He got really bad sick on the road and came back to London to get well and afterward took up session work. I don't care what anyone says, he is the Greatest Hard Rock Guitarist. I was fortunate enough to have seen Zeppelin live 176 times and Page/Plant an even 100 times. They'll never be another like those two Ever Again!!! This reminds me, I actually have a CP video I downloaded awhile back but haven't gave a look see yet; too busy listening to Zeppelin shows. But I will check it out tomorrow. Thanks man.
Edit : The Japanese still revere Jimmy & Led Zeppelin to this day. Just ask Marcia S. I saw she has commented on several of your videos. We always heard back in the day that the reason Zeppelin never played Japan after '72 was that the Emperor banned them because of the Cult like following of the Japanese youth( the Emperor's words, not mine)but I wonder if that was really true. I know I have revered Page & Led Zeppelin since 1969 when my brother came home on Jan 6th, 1969 from Los Angeles and he told me he had seen this fantastic new band at the Whiskey A Go-Go the night before, and that he heard they had an album being dropped on Jan. 12th. We both went to the record shop on that day, brought it home, and proceeded to listen to it 3 times in a row as loud as we could get away with without blowing the speakers out!!! I have listened to Zeppelin every day since. I can be in the worst mood, and 2 min. or so have a smile on my face and can't remember why I was upset, mad or bummed. Any track, it doesn't matter. Now that, to me, a life-long self taught Guitarist(thanks to Jimmy)is the true magick of great music. As far as lyrics, all I have to point to are Robert's lyrics to Kashmir & Achilles Last Stand, and the sheer fun of Dancing Days, to the seriousness of the Iconic No Quarter. Sorry, but for me, nobody comes close to Led Zeppelin. I enjoyed the reworkings of some of the tunes in Unledded/No Quarter, and I love Wonderful One, my and a special someone's ❤️ 'song'. I have always dreamed of them both sitting down with Gibson J-200s and Robert a Marine Band harmonica, and letting tape roll while they worked out blues/love(lust)tunes. Lololol, oh lordy I'm getting old. Rock On, brothers and sisters, and don't ever Stop!!!

They actually had a planned US tour and were selling tickets for that tour which was supposed to start in late January 94'. Problem was they were not selling enough tickets and management wanted to change the venues to smaller venues of around 5,000-15,000 people. Page essentially saw the writing on the wall, realized grunge had taken over, and figured a Zep reunion of sorts was the better money making option so the tour was cancelled and Page rang up old Robert.

I still listen to this album - and on CD since Spotify removed it. I'd been a fan of Coverdale since Purple. For some reason, most USA people think he magically appeared in 1987, not realizing his history. It might because he's been the 2nd lead singer a few times in mega groups. Even today, he still has a very wonderful voice. The silver lining is that when Whitesnake comes to town, the tickets are below $100 as opposed to groups like the Stones where they are more than 5x higher. Coverdale kind of plays into the USA stereotype at his USA shows - by not playing anything pre-1987. Ain't No Love in The Heart of the City - never heard in any USA show I've attended by him.

    • @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
      @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Very interesting points you address here. This is my perception too of his US shows, like Pre 1984 Whitesnake never happened. Do you think he does not want to pay royalties to his former mates? Marsden, Moody, etc? I saw him in 2011; great show! Incredible the Stones charge 5x..considering their chops you know? I wouldnt pay that. It's a shame they removed C/P from Spotify. But...its more profitable i guess, their royalty rates are laughable.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I think it's more playing into USA expectations. I was in HS in the late 70s in London - two stops away from Hammersmiths. Both Rainbow and Snake were well respected by proto-metal HS rockers. Punk and New Wave (& New Romantic) were permeating the youths music tastes too. This was just as Lord and Paice joined Coverdale and Glover joined Blackmore. Both groups were releasing music with very similar riffs and beats. I returned to the US and no one heard of Whitesnake or Rainbow. I was actually living on Long Island at the 90s. My guitar tech told me he also did work for Blackmore - which I thought was BS. Much later, I did learn Blackmore was and still is living there a few miles from me LOL. It wasn't until late in college in the 80s when all of sudden it seemed the metal fans suddenly heard of Whitesnake and believed they came out of nowhere. Also on these fans radar was Kingdom Come's debut album. When I would explain this was post-Purple, no one seemed to care - a few years earlier Perfect Strangers came out. Only one person I knew was aware of it - and he was from Scotland. It was as-if Whitesnake came out of nowhere and didn't exist before. USA did the same thing with the Bee Gees in the 70s - latched onto their dance music and didn't realize they had existed since around the same time Purple started. I loved the Purple Album when it came out (also pulled from Spotify today - had to buy that import CD from Europe!) and was excited to hear Coverdale finally doing Burn and Might Just Save Your Life live in the USA. But no such luck. He played mostly 1987-1989 stuff, ignored the Purple stuff and pre-87, but also played some stuff from later. Everyone was singing along. It was a full concert. Hey played exactly what the audience wanted to hear and groove with. I doubt anyone but me was living in London in the 80s. If I want to hear these favorites of mine live - it would seem I'm relegated to streaming platforms - which is a dream in of itself compared to before.

I'm so glad you made this video !!! My thoughts have changed, and after seeing the CP performances from Japan, I know now, that it is better that that was not fulfilled in the US.
Not being a Whitesnake fan, I did not know how bombastic Coverdale was on stage. I didn't like his constant profanity either. DC thinks he's the Grand Marshall of the Circus.
I was basing my desire to see CP live on what I heard on their album.
But now, after all these years, I can put that unfulfilled desire to rest.
I have seen LZ in the 70's, and Page, and Plant, in the 80's, and Page & Plant in the 90's.
Nothing that has come since LZ has ever approached or eclipsed the Magic of JP, RP, JPJ, & JB together. That said, the 2007 O2 concert did approach the magic of LZ better than anything, so I am grateful for that. And grateful that the world could finally get to hear the majesty of "Kashmir" live in high audio fidelity.

As for Coverdale, I loved his work in Deep Purple but his Whitesnake work didn’t really connect with me except for their cover of Ain’t no love in the heart of the city which sounds like something that could have been on Come Taste the Band. I have to agree that songs like Mistreated and Soldier of Fortune would have worked well with Page. To be honest his live collaboration with the Black Crows worked much better. From watching the interviews at the time, Coverdale seems to imply that it was Page that was composing tunes where DC would have to sing in "the stratosphere". Part of the interview has Page actually defending Coverdale for sounding like Plant - stating they were all a part of the Holy Trinity and there at the same time. No one seems to accuse Sabbath of sounding like Purple or Zep - even when Gillian and Hughes both joined Sabbath as singers on different occasions (well they didn't, it was the record companies that rebranded their efforts LOL). Coverdale even states in interviews that he started with Purple. But, most of us in the USA don't know about his history and all we know is he appeared in 1987 with Still of the Night - and we ignore the history. However, I know better LOL.

    The Coverdale/Page songs at these concerts are absolutely amazing! You nailed it JCM. They needed a 2nd album. Had they toured in support of two albums instead of just one, it would have been really great. And I agree, the Zep songs are not necessary. That's what was so cool about The Firm,... Page and Rodgers did not rely on stuff from previous bands, it was all new and all real. That's why The Firm will always be the best post-Zep group, hands down, nothing else comes close. Both Firm albums were brilliant. But it would have been nice to have another Coverdale/Page album, and for that matter, a 3rd Firm album was always on my wish-list. But I'm glad Coverdale/Page did these shows. They were both in top form. Two really amazing talents together, in these rare performances, captured for just a brief moment in time. It was special!       @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I left a comment to this effect elsewhere, but I wanted to run it by you as well;
Coverdale's "style", while unique and impressive in its own right, is incredibly inorganic and very, very mechanically exacting. It has three incredibly precise "modes" that David, in his prime, managed to meld together with great effort, if at all. It was not suited to just jumping in and having fun singing a song. He had to try and figure out how to adapt his highly affected, incredibly demanding singing to each part of any song he was asked to sing, and he clearly found that a challenge. I assume that's why he hardly ever did covers. His own songs were, of course, automatically tailored to what came easily to him.

I enjoyed your story from a Led Zeppelin perspective. You mentioned, that these weren't Whitesnake shows, but they weren't Led Zeppelin shows too. These were Coverdale / Page shows so you had to expect (and accept) things that made Jimmy and David famous. And the banter between the songs is one of these things. It was DC's 8th tour in Japan and at least half of the audience expected that. And it seems that it was ok for Jimmy too, he heard it in the rehearsals and probably would have said David that he shouldn't do that if he had found it unacceptable. For me the main let down of the Coverdale/Page album is the drum sound - it’s incredibly dated to that period. Denny is a great drummer but this isn’t his best moment and I was surprised Jimmy allowed that sound.

    • @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories

Coverdale. Coverdale. I never did quite get Coverdale. I wanted to like his vocals; he had range, power, "that sound," but there was something a bit sloppy about him, always a little laggy, always a bit behind, always hunting for a note, and too reliant on slow, wide, vibrato. He starts off aiming for a wide target, then adjusts as he gets closer (sometimes missing the target completely). A bit Karaoke-ish, maybe. Or as you put it, that person you met at Karaoke that you might get lucky with ... these two shouldn't have gone home together, haha.
I learned something I never knew before. Coverdale leaned heavily into falsetto to hit the high notes didn't he? His extreme discomfort in the mid to higher mid of his range seems to indicate this, as well as the extremely drastic difference in timbre compared to his lower singing / speaking voice contrasted against when he's hitting the high notes.
Say what you will about falsetto in male rock vocals up in the higher ranges; some might say it's cheating, some might think it's a perfectly valid way to hit those notes. Female opera singers rely on it heavily, but males do not. I think it works for male vocalists if there isn't a drastic change to the singer's sound below and above the breaking point, but Coverdale's voice changes an awful lot when he's low and high. It's not great.
And wow, Coverdale's stage banter is eye-wateringly terrible. It is disrespectful, not at all in congruity with the material. It's rather tone-deaf, actually, which is something that after listening to all your clips, I'm beginning to wonder isn't true of Coverdale's overall singing. I can only guess there were many takes, and heavy splicing and editing, for his vocals in the studio. The stuff on albums makes him sound much better than he sounds live, and there's usually a reason for that.
Coverdale is a bit of a circus act, to me, a bear on a unicycle. While you're amazed the bear can ride the unicycle (Coverdale did hit the notes that had been eluding Plant since the early 70s after all), the bear gets no points for style, grace, or finesse.
Plant's comments about, and reaction to, the collaboration between Page and Coverdale do come across as a bit crass (almost acting like Page might be cheating on him), but he was not wrong. He may have been coming at it from a mean-spirited place, but that doesn't change the fact that Coverdale was not the right pairing for Page. Even Chris Farlowe worked better than Coverdale (Death Wish II), and that wasn't particularly great singing either.
Thank you for another eye-opener of a video. I always learn very interesting things, and think very interesting thoughts, when I watch your work. Well done.

Coverdale did use falsetto, what 1987 did to his voice was great damage, and i think Whitesnake fans refuse to admit this. I'm glad my videos have made you think interesting thoughts, your comment is GOLD and very well written. David was disrespectful yeah, it was a nightmare for me to listen to his quotes. I like to think he was just nervous? And yes, as much as Plant bashed him, he HAD A POINT, i know this is a tough sell with most rock fans, so reading you mention it made me smile. I believe John Miles was the best on stage collaborator for Page. 1994 is around the corner, i am bracing myself to get into THAT!

Oh boy, JCM, you told this story so well! It's rather complicated to explain, but you did and I agree with what you said. I really like this album. Someone stole my copy of this album two days after I bought it lol. When I finally listened to it in its entirety, I appreciated it more than I could've the first time.
I love Robert Plant, but he should have not spoken so proud🦚. That's when this album became underrated. I could be wrong. I guess it's not bad to be underrated but it should have sold more no matter what. I mean, how good was David Coverdale in Deep Purple and Whitesnake, not to mention Jimmy Page's session history and beyond?

Annette! How are you doing! I will be honest, editing this one was HARD, i was worried the script didn't make sense. But here we are! Robert's management took a hit with the Fate of Nations figures and having 25 musicians on it, well there goes your studio bill right? lol. Hope you enjoy my take on Unledded 1994!

It definitely is a labor of love to create documentaries, but it's necessary. Most people your age would've chosen an artist closer to their age and that's ok. You chose a personal favorite band to focus on who has such an amazing history both musical and personal that anyone else might feel overwhelmed to accomplish or receive negative criticism for. May you accomplish great things both musical and personal. I know I go over the top with my posts but I mean well!
