Sure was and it makes me laugh when they said Coverdale was ripping off Plant. He doesn’t sound anything like Plant. Great album too and can’t wait for the reissue
D Lux You are right spot on ! , The best creative work Jimmy has done since early Zeppelin. You have to read between the lines. That album was so good, It caused a major blow to Robert Plant’s ego. So much so that Robert Plant was lashing out at David Coverdale in the media saying he was copying him, When in reality even Robert Plant new he himself couldn’t sound the way he did back in the Zeppelin hey day Robert also knowing that David was now under Jimmy’s masterful producing powers, that Page could get great results. This caused Plant to come out of Zeppelin retirement and purposely derail any future endeavors between Page and Coverdale. Plants battle cry was I will burn down this village to save my Ego! Robert knew that Jimmy would bite at the chance of a Zep regrouping with him. Plant played Page like a steel guitar! It was Robert who insisted to use his band which would snubbed John Paul Jones securing Plant’s future son-in-law Charlie in place to play bass. This should have been a clear indication to Jimmy Page that Plant had selfish alternative reasons, and that the outcome would be not favorable to Jimmy . Page obviously was blinded and didn’t see it coming. And I cannot blame Jimmy Page, Let’s face it, who would ever think that down the road The great singer of Led Zeppelin Robert Plant the Golden god would denounce one of the greatest songs in rock history that he helped pen, “Stairway to Heaven”, carrying on and making fun not wanting to sing it, and never wanting to hear it played on radio again. Really Robert ? What the hell is up with that? Robert Plant held all the cards at this point, and so for a last grab at the Zeppelin machine to fly, Jimmy Page agreed and so the touring, recording and MTV special. Were all laid out. Jimmy’s performance on the Walking into Clarks Dale album is very subpar, especially compared to the Page Coverdale album. Robert’s entire performance on Clarksdale is forgettable. Also on that tour Plant couldn’t even deliver a good vocal live when doing a song from the Page Coverdale album. “David must have loved that! All said and done I feel bad for the following, The Zeppelin Fans, John Paul Jones, David Coverdale and even Jimmy Page, For this could have been a great comeback. Not just a comeback for the sake of Zeppelin, cause we all know now that they would have done something, Hence the O2 concert but even more so a comeback for Jimmy Page on his own. What amazing music Coverdale and Page could have put out we will never know. And Jimmy I’m still waiting for that solo album!
Very well said. Coverdale Page coulda done so much more, superior to plant page thereafter..altho still loved it all...jpj getting snubbed is forever unforgivable ! One and done for coverdale page and its a shame ! Take me for a little while is a Gem.
Yeah, I think you’re right, Archie! You know David Coverdale has said he’d work with Jimmy anytime, ands you wonder since Robert still isn’t interested in working with Jimmy, why these two give us one more album & tour! I just want to see Jimmy live, brother!❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine I LOVE Jimmy, as you already know….but I think he’s too old now…..even if other 78 year olds are playing and touring, I don’t think he’s kept up his chops. DAMN.
I loved the Coverdale Page album. I listened to this album many many times and still do today. It never gets old. Jimmy Page best work since post Led Zeppelin. Coverdale was awesome on this album as well probably his best since Whitesnake's 1987 album. I hope that next year they will release a special 30 year deluxe package cd /dvd. I will definitely buy it. Cheers!!!!
I agree with your whole assessment, I love this album, and yes it’s probably Page’s best post Zep album, although the first Firm album is a classic and may compete with that. This is definitely an overlooked album, I think it got slogged as hair metal at the time because of Coverdale’s recent foray in that field with Whitesnake. Funny thing is though, if you listen to the early records of Whitesnake just post Purple, they sound more like Bad Company than anything else to me, and they’re all great! You need to check them out👍 Again they’re overshadowed by the hair metal days once John Sykes joined the band after his short stint with Thin Lizzy, but I love the earlier albums better. I’ve digressed here, but thought you might find it interesting😊.
I enjoyed his solo album "Outrider." And Jimmy's solo live show in New Orleans was super great. Coverdale was there. I enjoyed the different vocalists on the album. Jimmy plays his heart out. I saw Jimmy live 3 times. The Firm will always be a group I enjoyed, even today. Especially when I thought I might not be seeing Jimmy play live any time soon. And who doesn't love to hear Paul Rodgers sing? Paul called Jimmy up and got him going, he hadn't touched the guitar since Bonzo's death. Scary right? Jimmy's live performances makes him the guitar hero that he is. I love it all!❤️ One thing for sure, everyone has individual taste, but most people can't get enough of Jimmy Page. ❤️🎸
Yes, there is certainly fantastic guitar on 'Outrider' and I also loved his playing with Paul Rodgers/ The Firm ; particularly his unique use of the b-bender ... really soulful .
Great album. I remember Plant referring to David Coverdale as David Coverversion lol. Funny thing to me saw both live thought Coverdale was the better singer. I also really liked Pages live album with the Black Crowes.
Best rock album of the 1990s. Best solo album by any zeppelin member. A masterpiece of rock music ignored at the time. .i Loved it when it came out and forever!!! Hopefully special edition will come out with extra songs. Check out saccharine!!!!!! Would be great if Jimmy and David reunite for more!! Coverdale spoke of this ! Could be a chance! I'll take anything!!!!
Couldn't agree with you more Mike! I always thought the 2 of them could have followed it up with another album just as great! We can still wish, can't we?
Coverdale Page just rubbed me the wrong way... It was all too obvious what they were doing here, goading Plant into some sort of Page and Plant collaboration. And it Worked. But IMO, Black Crowes and Jimmy Page was the one that I was the most excited about. I guess that doesnt count as new work but damn, it was pretty bad ass. No Quarter was awesome as well.
Both still speak very highly of this project (and each other), so it obviously sprang from an authentic place. In fact, Coverdale has spoken about hopefully an elaborate box set of these sessions coming out in the future. Two great and proper rock superstars. Cool video, Michael! You’re the best.
And to think that at that same press conference, they both said they used every single song from those sessions! Hmmm! Then where are all these bonus tracks coming from, especially if they were lost in the great fire, Bruce! If you hear anything regarding this, let me know!❤️
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine It will probably be more of a remix/remastering job with a nice book thrown in. If I hear more, of course I’ll let you know.
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Even if the masters are gone, DC has copies of the unreleased songs (he shared some of them 20 years ago on his website). And of course there will be that nice book thrown in, I sent my whole collection of magazine cuttings (just like for the last 5 box sets).
I only discovered this album about two years ago. During the pandemic, I spent ALLOT of time “digging deep”…… down into the solo careers of all three surviving members. Fell in love with Robert Plant’s music first. Then, I checked out The Firm, and then This album. I got the CD and played it to death in the car. It’s a great rock album, and I don’t know why it wasn’t huge. I can only think that popular taste was changing so fast……and it was competing with metal and grunge. The younger folks went with the younger bands, and many of the fans of Zeppelin…..who by then were in their forties…like me…had moved away from hard rock. It took me almost 30 years, a pandemic, and TH-cam reaction channels to rediscover my passion for this music and to also broaden my musical tastes into metal, grunge, trip-hop and other genres. What a gift to reconnect with this music in old age! 😁🤘🤘
I loved the album when it came out, and still drag it out once in awhile for a listen. It was a true breath of fresh air when it came out, and it was a nice return to form for Jimmy.
Wow I never knew of this album until now. Big fan of Page but also Coverdale when in Deep Purple - I was a 15 year old hard rock fan when David was in DP. Hope I can get a CD of this duo down here in New Zealand
Wonderful album & looking forward to a freshly mixed version next year with some bonus content. David has done an excellent job releasing updated versions of Whitesnake’s biggest albums.
I genuinely don’t want to hear a “modernized” mix with drum samples and all that usual today’s boredom. The original mix is really good. I don’t see much room for improvement here.
Love this album. Don't Leave me This Way is one of the best blues rock songs I've heard. Could have been on a zep album. I do hear some plant when Coverdale screams. I hear there are some songs out there that from that album that may yet be released.
Warning: this is a hot topic for me, and odds are this is going to be a long post so if anyone doesn’t like long posts stop reading now. You have been warned . To answer the question posed: Yes by a long shot. As much as I loved the Page and Plant reunion, and saw them live twice, including 4th row here in Phoenix in 1999, and bought everything they ever put out, I wish Page would have stayed with Coverdale. Without a doubt he had upped his game feeling the pressure of having to be “Zoso”. It’s obvious that Plant heard the CP album, and how Jimmy had taken the strides he made on Outrider, and upped the ante to produced a shockingly great Zeppelin-worthy extravaganza. He played with FIRE 🔥 on this album. And to make matters even worse for Plant, Page teamed up with his protégé and all around whipping boy/nemesis, David Coverdale. And while Fate Of Nations found plant also rediscovering his magic, producing probably the best album of his solo career, in my opinion, capturing much of the feel of his singing back in the day, there is no doubt that he had to be intimidated by what he heard, coming from David Coverdale on the Coverdale Page album. Coverdale being a few years younger than Plant perhaps helping his case, but his masterful vocal performance on CP was likely just very inspired as he was, after all, playing with Jimmy Page. He belts it out with abandon; proving he was as good a rock singer as anyone still in 1993, but also showed a full gamut of styles, often singing with sensitivity, conveying a wide range of emotions. Honestly I can’t think of a Whitesnake or purple album where his singing is so masterful it complete in scope. Well Robert wasn’t gonna have any of that…. Which, of course led to him and famously “calling to” Jimmy at the end of “Calling To You”. And just like that - poof! The dream of Coverdale Page and all the great Jimmy Page music we might’ve gotten out of it, was over. Instead, Jimmy chose to team up with Plant, which more or less meant inserting himself into Robert’s solo band, and becoming more or less just the next guitarist for that band and putting out music sounding quite similar to Plant’s solo stuff, with a couple of obviously more Pagey numbers in there. Walking into Clarksdale was a very good album of course, and also a very good disappointment. I mean Jimmy is his own man and makes his own decisions., but I just feel that “mature” Plant kind people f neutered Jimmy a bit, and ultimately his ego ruined what would’ve been a great collaboration, better Page and Coverdale, and definitely more exciting than Page Plant. Of course it’s hard to say, but I’m not sure if Page and Coverdale don’t team up, that we see a Page and Plant reunion; at least not like what we saw, that went on for many years, as Plant had up until that time shown zero interest in such a reunion. Oh well I’m sure in some alternate reality Coverdale and Page went on to do five studio albums together, and released a kick ass live albim or two. Probably wouldn’t have been too long before JPJones was on board. Just please no Dave Grohl on drums. OK? Anyone else please! And yeah why the hell not just go get Jason. He proved on O2 he would be more than worthy. Oh, I know…. how quickly my thoughts turn into Led Zeppelin with David Coverdale I know…. I guess some things just can’t be helped.. Too bad barring some quantum chicanery and a little luck, none of us will probably ever wittiness it!
This release and Walking into Clarksdale are both top notch with Jimmy. It would be cool to see David and Jimmy do a second album together. They were a great fit. I know there are at least a few unreleased songs that might get the box set treatment too. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
A great album. Coverdale has said many times that he thought they should make another one. That day may have come and gone now... but it would have been cool. I have bootlegs of the Japan shows. They are good performances...hopefully they multitracked the shows and release a live album some day.
I got this album at midnight when it came out. It was amazing, but sadly nobody wanted to play it but classic rock stations. Alt rock stations refused to hear anything about Coverdale Page. It's unheard of, no pun intended, for an album to go so high on the charts and not get any air play on the top 40 stations. As you point out, even the critics panned it. Again, because they weren't the flavor of the month. But there isn't a weak song on the album. Jimmy hits all his spots with acoustic/crunch blending, lighter songs, heavier songs, etc. And David's range is way beyond Robert's. Robert is better at writing lyrics, but David is a much better singer. It would be more accurate to say Robert's voice was mixed to sound like David's because Jimmy recorded Robert the same way Cadillac records recorded Chuck Berry. Record slightly slower and mix the track at full speed and the vocals go up in pitch. Chuck explains this on Johnny Carson, Jimmy explains this in Guitar magazine interviews. My point is, he didn't need to do that with David because David can just sing that way.
I agree that Coverdale-Page is Page's best post-Zep work. On my, "Pablo's 1,000 Greatest Hard Rock Songs", I have SEVEN songs (out of the eleven) from this album on there! I rank this LP as the #2 LP of all time (only behind: Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland" Here's how I rank this LP's songs: 1K # (Rank); SONG NAME Highlights 11. 1st on LP: Whisper A Prayer For The Dying GGG 3 - 4 rift s TOUGH, WORDS, VOICE ; 33 2nd on LP: Don' t Leave Me This Way GG 3.54 - 5.30, 6.30 - 7.30 BLUES ; 76 3rd on LP: Take Me For A Little While GG 2.42 - 3.30 BEAUTY ; 99 4th on LP: Absolution Blues gtr 0 - 1.18 ( - 2), 3.36 - 4.36 ; 142 5th on LP: Shake My Tree gtr 2.54 - 4 rift , voice, harmonica ; 206 6th on LP: Pride & Joy 271 7th on LP: Easy Does It rifts (x2) , Tough, beauty ;
Absolutely worship this lp. If people had brains they would to. I have and have had soooo many copies of it to give to people and blow their minds. Its always "really the Whitesnake guy?" Most certainly the best post Purple that Coverdale has sang on. Remember hearing them on Rockline when it came out.
Hi Michael, been subscribed for a while thru my Roku device so I couldn't comment but just now added you to my computer TH-cam which I don't visit that often. I have thoroughly enjoyed your channel...great work. I have never heard the Coverdale - Page album but will now give it a whirl. I found it interesting that you mentioned the drivability of this album because I find the same to be true with the Black Crows and Jimmy Page offering. My first Led Zeppelin album was II while a freshman in HS (1969 & 70). Fan ever since.
Who cares if Coverdale sounds like Plant? A collaboration between one of the greatest voices of rock and roll and a guitarist who has no equal yielded a high energy kick ass album. They knew what they were doing. Pure singer, pure guitarist, result, pure joy.
Never heard the album! I'll have to track it down sometime, but it's way down on a long list that includes the last 2 Led Zeppelin LPs so it may be a while. Great video. 👍
Hello from the UK ... cool video ... re checking out Whitesnake .... do be aware of the "2 eras of the 'snake" ... the initial (blues / soul / rock) era with the majestic Bernie Marsden / Mickie Moody on guitars (thecera often favoured by the UK fans) v the later era (post mid 1980's) (without Marsden / Moody) that swings to satisfy MTV / Stateside sensibilities ... for me, the later material is "ok" (often underwhelming)... whereas the earlier material is wonderful ... definitely, for me, the go to period ... it will be interesting to hear your thoughts ... CMcG, Aberdeen, UK .... p.s. start with Living in the Shadow of the Blues !
Thanks Michael. I must have been passed out in 1993? Never heard about this album. Until watching your video . Just finished listening to it. It’s really good.
Great to hear this album get come love...I've always had a soft spot for it, get on the road and crank it up, happy days! I heard Mr Coverdale might be releasing some unreleased songs from this album...and perhaps a re release?....Fate of Nations is another wonderful album...good times!!
Hi Michael, I bought the Coverdale Page CD in the early 90's right after it was released. An employee of mine asked if I'd heard it yet, I hadn't, then stated it was the first time he'd ever listened to an album that inspired him to want to take guitar lessons. I bought the CD that very night. I located it last night after watching this show I remembered it was in the wrong cover. I will be listening this morning as soon as I get out of bed lol it's currently 4:38 a.m. This is a really good album, vastly different from Jimmy's Zep work. Great show thank you.
Deep Purple broke up in 1976 and before the year was up (before the dust settled) we were presented with 4 excellent albums worthy of a spot in any true rock fan's collection. Tommy Bolin's second and final album, Private Eyes Glen Hughes' funk masterpiece, Play Me Out Paice, Ashton and Lord's only release, Malice in Wonderland David Coverdale's little R'n'B flavored solo debut, White Snake (two words). Guitarist Micky Moody (Juicy Lucy) was Coverdale's songwriting partner and stayed on for David's next album. Northwinds was equally R'n'B flavored and this time featured most of Joe Cocker's Grease Band. It was at this point that Coverdale and Moody started putting together what would become Whitesnake (one word). Joining them were guitarist Bernie Marsden (Paice, Ashton and Lord) and on bass Neal Murray (Marsden's bandmate from Cozy Powell's Hammer). After the Snakebite ep, Jon Lord joined and after two more albums (Trouble and Lovehunter) Ian Paice joined too. Now the classic line-up is complete and stayed this way until Deep Purple's reunion in 1984. Whitesnake, of course, carried on, but I didn't much notice until the two massive power ballad hits of 1987. In any case, this was a great 70s style hard rock band worth knowing... at least the material from before they finally succumbed to the much lesser genres of hair metal/glam metal. Cheers!
I had read about it in the music mags and kept checking the local stores waiting for it to come out. I bought the CD and copied it onto cassette so I could listen in my black GEO Storm driving to work each day! I wore that tape out and love the album to this day.
Not only Jimmy's best post Zep album, but in my opinion, the best post Zep album from any of the former members. For those who think it sounds like a Zep rip off, how could it not? Jimmy was a major riff writer in Zep, and his style is his style.
One of the most underrated albums of all time! This album blew my whole family away as it helped link 2 generations. Some of Page's best work, in my opinion.
I think The Firm is Jimmy's best projects post-Zep. They were a band with their own sound and weren't trying to be Zep..... It seemed like the whole point of Coverdale Page was to sound as much like Zep as humanly possible. Some of the songs were a little too close to Zep tunes.... Shake My Tree (Nobody's Fault But Mine), Don't Leave me this Way (Since I've been Loving You, Tea for One, Prison Blues)... Blues licks he's done before.... Absolution Blues (The Intro is IN THE EVENING!!!).... Whisper a Prayer for the Dying.... Um, In my time of dying...It's Over Now (Kashmir wannabe).... THE FIRM has their own sound. Paul Rodgers wasn't trying to be Plant. Tony Franklin's fretless bass helped give the band a unique sound. Chris Slade didn't play like Bonham. Highlights of THE FIRM are Closer, Radioactive, Midnight Moonlight, Satisfaction Guaranteed, Fortune Hunter, Cadillac, Live in Peace, Tear Down the Walls... LIVE IN PEACE has Jimmy's final GREAT gtr solo... It's a perfect 10!!! as good as the Zep solos....
I tuned out so much in the 80s and 90s that I missed a lot. Never heard of Coverdale or anything that Jimmy did after the last LZ album that I wasn't much a fan of. I'll give it a listen.
This is an album I purchased aged 16 after getting into Zeppelin three years earlier. Many years later (now aged 47 and a life long Zeppelin fan) I would say many tracks would have been a post ‘In through the outdoor’ release. I believe at least ‘Shake my Tree’ and ‘Pride and Joy’ included riffs left over from what Page wanted in a ‘heavy’ release post ITTOD. Given Plant did ‘Shake my Tree’ live on the Page/ Plant tour, as great as the Coverdale vocals in the album are (and they really are fantastic), Plant live is the next level.
I would love to see Page do something like this. Call up all of the new great singers who are out there right now. Guy's like Jay from Rival Sons, Brent from Shinedown, Corey from Slipknot even guy's like Steven Tyler, Sammy Hagar, John Carobi and Myles Kennedy. Have them show up at the studio with there writing partners . Spend a week in the studio and write a new song with Page have guest like Jason and JPJ, Dave Grohl play on some tracks. Put those songs on a record then on a second record ( double record) is a Led Zeppelin cover that the collaboration does. Plus give them for there services rendered one Zeppelin track to take home to there band to cover on the next record. Call it Jimmy Page, The Legacy Sessions.
Love it! Only problem….at 78, Jimmy is no longer playing electric guitar,..only a bit of acoustic. As far as I know. The last time I heard him play electric was video of him and JPJ playing a couple of songs with The Foo Fighters at Wembley in 2008.
Kshe 95 st. Louis radio station used to play full new albums on Sunday nights called the seventh day program. They played the entire coverdale page album beginning to end. First time i heard the song feeling hot i was hooked. Coverdale sounded amazing. Wish the U. S. Tour would have happened, i was saving up for it. Can't wait for the remastered re issue next year 2023.
I am a big MK3 MK4 Deep Purple, so I was very much open to Coverdale/Page album & tour. The latter never happened with the exception of a tour of Japan. I found the drums on the album, too loud. I hope a remix will address that. The only tracks where’s their’s a bit of space for me is ‘Over Now’ & the Beatle- esque ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’
You’re right… it’s a great album! and when you start checking out Whitesnake, please make sure you start from the beginning when it was really blues/rock based and not 80’s metal-ish as David Geffen pushed him into that area for Slide It In. But Trouble, Lovehunter, Ready An Willing, Come An Get It, and Saints and Sinners, where you’ll find the original and fabulous Crying in the Rain and of course Here I go Again, are are great albums… maybe not all the way through but, I guarantee you will find a few gems from each to put together a pre-Slide It In playlist that you’ll enjoy for years. Let me know if you’d like mine from that era!! Have a great day!!
I think it’s a solid record I agree with you on driving in a car , but it’s a little too polished I like outrider in 88 that song for song reminds me of what made Page so awesome. His cover of hummingbird the solo is back in the day feel . The jazz feel of writes of winter is inspired , blues anthem . Etc that’s his best work I saw him twice in concert that year . Just six years earlier he was struggling to get his chops back , that record showed how diverse his talents were .
I forgot I already commented on the question, I agree with myself I think outrider is his best post Zeppelin album And the O2 was the best post Zeppelin. Zeppelin. Cheerd
I bought this when it first came out but I have to tell you after the first few tracks. The stigma really stood out. I really liked Pride and Joy but I don't think I ever got through the full disc. After listening to this I'm going to have to go back and listen. I do a lot of driving so I do it then....
good job by both of them, they didn't copy what they had been doing before the album. Any vocal coach can tell you that COVERDALE doesn't do anything PLANT would do vocally, they use a different technique. VOCAL RANGE get people confused, if you listen to live renditions of ZEPPELIN songs done by DAVID IT SHOWS really well what PLANT should do but he can't. songs were great and as performers there is nothing to be said
Michael - If you listen to Whitesnake do yourself a favor and start with Ready and Willing. It was a minor hit in the US in 1980, and I consider it their best album. Sounds like a follow up to Come Taste the Band, and features Jon Lord and Ian Paice right before they rejoined Purple. Not a bad song on that album, and has a perfect mixture of hard rock and blues.
Such a under rated album !! Loved it when it came out working in radio at the time I was lucky to sang some promo CD singles. But was not smart enough to buy it on LP then as I was drinking the CD kool-aid. I was bummed they only toured Japan for this album and really never knew what the fall out was. Some great guitar work here and makes you wonder why Page did not do a follow up to Outrider with these riffs. Yea sure maybe it was some sort of dig to Plant or pushed Plant to get on board and do the No Quarter project who knows. But this is a gem in the body of work for Page. Rumor is a 1993 30th box set edition is supposed to come out so hopefully that is true. Being the Coverdale cancelled the Whitesnake tour due to health issues and Page MIA playing live I am sure we will not see even a streaming live anniversary performance by them. But one never really knows. Great overview and enjoyed your personal thoughts on this LP Michael. !!! cheers-VK
to me this is pages best post Zeppelin work! David Coverdale sounded like David Coverdale not plant! Jonathan common he had with plant was his hair! I was working on the movie Jurassic Park when this album came out! I blasted this at my workbench in the studio shop!
I'm not a fan of Coverdale but Page hell yeah, my fave guitarist! This project woke Plant up though, after it was over he and Page spent most of the rest of the decade touring and even made an album Walking into Clarksdale, and that whole unledded thing
This is in my top five of the 1990s for sure. Nothing wrong with it. I don't see a lot of these used, so my sense is that people hang on to this album.
Hey Mike, great video on Coverdale Page. I agree with you 100% that this is Page's best post Zeppelin works. The Firm and Outrider were disappointing at best. When this came out I thought finally some Jimmy Page I recognize. It's filled with huge JP riffs and solos that put you in mind of some Zeppelin that might have come after Precense. If you thru in Plant, JPJ and Jason Bonzo it would totally be a Zeppelin album. I love it and still listen to it. If Bobby doesn't want to play with Jimmy, then get someone else!!
Early Whitesnake was closer to a Free/Bad Company/Thin Lizzy/Mott the Hoople hybrid than to Led Zeppelin, or even Deep Purple Mk.3/4. There were some Colosseum 2-ish jazz-rock elements too, with a bit of Status Quo - a wide-ranging mix indeed! And David Coverdale's voice always sounded closer to Paul Rodgers', but with Ian Gillan's power, than to Robert Plant's. A Led Zep influence came into Whitesnake on Ready & Willing (Ain't Gonna Cry No More / She's a Woman) Come & Get It (Till the Day I Die), and Saints & Sinners (Love an' Affection had the How many More Times? riff on proud display!). Whitesnake's American breakthrough albums (Slide It In, 1987, and Slip of the Tongue) featured one Zeppelinesque song each - Slow an' Easy, Still of the Night, and Judgement Day. Coverdale/Page is certainly Jimmy Page's most exciting heavy rock album since Zeppelin.
I absolutely agree great album the critics hated it because it was not Plant but I think it was awesome although I don’t share your love of grunge music I pretty much agree with you
Greetings Michael ✌️, The song that stands out for me is Easy Does It, this song totally kicks Ass!!! Ive heard that song hundreds of times and Never get sick of it, This could have been a Big Led Zeppelin Hit had they recorded it, I never heard FM Rock Stations play this song which is a head scratcher but YES this is Jimmy's best album since Led Zeppelin I wish he would have done more albums like this like for example one with Ian Gillan as well.
Michael ,you are so right 😀I went a long time before I got Coverdale /Page . I liked it. Then one night I think it was a day or 2 before Christmas . On a rainy night . I had Coverdale /Page on the cd player then it just clicked 😀I was focased on the road but also absorbing the music at the same time 😀That's when I said damn this is a really rockin record😀 I've loved it ever since😀
I would say this album did very well for itself considering it had to compete with the early 90s grunge scene. It may not be as strong or successful as “ Dirt “ or “ Nevermind “ but it’s still a solid piece.
I’ve been a Zephead since 1969 and in my opinion this album is as good as LZ3, HOTH, Presence and certainly better than ITTOD. I’m also pretty sure Jimmy Page has unreleased material of a similar quality that has not surfaced yet.
I got this album when it was new and page is my favorite guitarist of all time and I’m a huge fan of his and I couldn’t latch on to one song . All these years later I still can’t find anything I like about it. Pages best post Zeppelin work in my opinion is definitely the first Firm album. His solo album outrider could of been better but I still like it . Death wish 2 is awesome , Walking into Clarksdale. Plant page unplugged .Honey drippers, page black crows are all better imo
I think this album is far, *FAR* better than Zeppelin's actual last album (In Through the Out Door) As far as I'm concerned, THIS is the true last Zeppelin album 😊 BTW, I've been collecting vinyl for over 40 years, but usually nothing super expensive or really 'out there', just albums that I really like to listen to. BUT... THIS album on vinyl did become something of an obsession with me since I like it so much, so I must admit with some embarrassment that out of all the 2500+ vinyl albums I have, I paid the most (by far!) for this album on vinyl in mint condition. It was never released on vinyl in the U.S. and was only released in some countries. On Discogs I was able to find a UK seller who had a mint copy, and it is of course,, outstanding! 👍
A great album that certainly divided the critics and put Robert's knickers in a twist at the time. To me it sounded like two rock veterans giving their all to the project. Regarding the criticism of Coverdale supposedly aping Robert's voice, they seem to forget about his vocal register on the 1987 album. On that album his voice was stretching out from previous Whitesnake material. I hope the proposed reissue of Coverdale/Page comes to fruition especially if they do a separate Coverdale vs Page mix.
Excellent album. And had its own vibe. Listened to it a few months ago. Good topic, but hard for you to have done it without listening to Whitesnake. After that comment, I feel there is a hole in the content and commentary.
i like it, but prefer the firm. The 1st lp had bad production, and midnight moonlight wasn't as good as the live 1983 ARMS version. 2nd lp sounded pretty good. Both need to be remastered. Then again the swan song bands are my 2 favorite. lol and from what I heave read, working with Paul helped Page get back into the groove and cleaned up.
Jimmy Page was very focus on this project. David Coverdale sounded like David Coverdale. Shake my tree was a rift that Jimmy came up with during the In Though The Outdoor sessions
I liked early Robert Plant, it also had a Zeppelin-esque feel though more In Through the Out Door than LZII. I really like C+P, agree it was the most reminiscent of LZ. Even RP was upset it sounded too much like Zeppelin. I really liked the Black Crowes with JP, but still wish The Firm could have found their stride most of all.
The best thing about Coverdale / Page is it shook Robert Plant out of his bunny hole to wake up and be with Page again.
But Coverdale was trouncing Plant in terms of vocals at this time
Sure was and it makes me laugh when they said Coverdale was ripping off Plant. He doesn’t sound anything like Plant. Great album too and can’t wait for the reissue
I like plant more but he could not hit the notes Coverdale could in his prime.
@@shanebroussard6262 Plant in his prime had a bigger range and could hit every of prime Coverdale’s notes and a half
@@ADITYASINGH-vc4gm highly doubtful. Coverdale had bigger voice to me. We all entitled to there opinion.

You are right spot on ! , The best creative work Jimmy has done since early Zeppelin.
You have to read between the lines.
That album was so good, It caused a major blow to Robert Plant’s ego.
So much so that Robert Plant was lashing out at David Coverdale in the media saying he was copying him,
When in reality even Robert Plant new he himself couldn’t sound the way he did back in the Zeppelin hey day
Robert also knowing that David was now under Jimmy’s masterful producing powers, that Page could get great results.
And I cannot blame Jimmy Page,
Let’s face it, who would ever think that down the road The great singer of Led Zeppelin Robert Plant the Golden god
would denounce one of the greatest songs in rock history that he helped pen, “Stairway to Heaven”, carrying on and making fun not wanting to sing it,
and never wanting to hear it played on radio again.
All said and done I feel bad for the following, The Zeppelin Fans, John Paul Jones, David Coverdale and even Jimmy Page,
For this could have been a great comeback.
Not just a comeback for the sake of Zeppelin, cause we all know now that they would have done something, Hence the O2 concert
but even more so a comeback for Jimmy Page on his own.
Not a bad song on this album. Love it.
Well done for covering this album Michael. It’s a sensational album. Probably why it pissed off Robert Plant.
DAMN.
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine By the way, I friggin' love your channel. More power to you Michael.
One of the best albums ever. It's so underrated. Work of art.
Cheers!!!!
I would buy it, too - the vinyl version
I enjoyed his solo album "Outrider."
And Jimmy's solo live show in New Orleans was super great.
I love it all!❤️
One thing for sure, everyone has individual taste, but most people can't get enough of Jimmy Page.
❤️🎸
Yes, there is certainly fantastic guitar on 'Outrider' and I also loved his playing with Paul Rodgers/ The Firm ; particularly his unique use of the b-bender ... really soulful .
Outrider was ok, but horrible recording!
I agree that his stint with the Black Crowes was marvelous, Floyd! I want to do a review of his playing on that one!❤
I was just getting into Led Zeppelin around the time this album came out. I absolutely loved it. My favorite track: Don’t Leave Me This Way.
I just listend to the Album. I follow absolutly your analysis. And I find a brilliant Coverdale who doesn’t sound like Robert Plant.
Amen to that Jetcat! And there’s the new re-release with bonus material to look forward to!👌
Wow I never knew of this album until now.
I’m looking forward to the new release as well, RR!❤️🤔🎧
I genuinely don’t want to hear a “modernized” mix with drum samples and all that usual today’s boredom. The original mix is really good. I don’t see much room for improvement here.
Love this album. Don't Leave me This Way is one of the best blues rock songs I've heard. Could have been on a zep album. I do hear some plant when Coverdale screams. I hear there are some songs out there that from that album that may yet be released.
I like shake my tree, but I like The Firm more and I love the song outrider on his solo album.
The album is called Outrider but it's not a song
The Firm was great too! I just slightly pick this one over that one….Barely!
Thanx, bigbong!
@@youtoo2233 liquid mercury I meant. Love that song.
Agreed - excellent rock'n album! And any Page lover who hasn't listened to this music is missing out.
I agree that Coverdale-Page is Page's best post-Zep work. On my, "Pablo's 1,000 Greatest Hard Rock Songs", I have SEVEN songs (out of the eleven) from this album on there!
I rank this LP as the #2 LP of all time (only behind: Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland"

And they are there rightfully so, in my opinion, Pablo! Excellent ranking!👌
The Firm was my favorite post-Zep band. Two great albums and 2 tours. However, I love this Coverdale -Page album too.
They gotta do a 30th anniversary audiophile reissue next year on vinyl and CD surely...
I hear it’s coming, Blue! 🤔🎧👂
I agree with you concerning Black Crowes with Jimmy Page being a very drivable album as well, Pauldez!
Great choice on a summer day imo!
Who cares if Coverdale sounds like Plant? A collaboration between one of the greatest voices of rock and roll and a guitarist who has no equal yielded a high energy kick ass album. They knew what they were doing. Pure singer, pure guitarist, result, pure joy.
Hi Michael, what a fantastic video, so in depth. I love this album too.
Nice work. Totally underrated work by both guys. Love that album. Great blues too.
A stunning album. Great review.
Thanx, AG!
Perfect timing!! Lunchtime with Michael Noland
That's what I'm talking about!
Thanx, Robin! 👌😉❤️
Never heard the album! I'll have to track it down sometime, but it's way down on a long list that includes the last 2 Led Zeppelin LPs so it may be a while.
Great video. 👍
Thanx, Doc! And of course ANY Led Zeppelin stuff always comes first!👌😉
better than the last zep album!
better than the last zep album!
so you dont know PRESENCE was one of their killeralbums,,,,,
Hello from the UK ... cool video ... re checking out Whitesnake .... do be aware of the "2 eras of the 'snake" ... the initial (blues / soul / rock) era with the majestic Bernie Marsden / Mickie Moody on guitars (thecera often favoured by the UK fans) v the later era (post mid 1980's) (without Marsden / Moody) that swings to satisfy MTV / Stateside sensibilities ... for me, the later material is "ok" (often underwhelming)... whereas the earlier material is wonderful ... definitely, for me, the go to period ... it will be interesting to hear your thoughts ... CMcG, Aberdeen, UK .... p.s. start with Living in the Shadow of the Blues !
My favourite line-up and era was Coverdale, Cozy Powell, Jon Lord, John Sykes, Mel Galley and Neil Murray
i agree and think earlier line up albums were underproduced? Martin Birch was a good one but maybe Ritchie paid him to produce like this?
Thanks Michael. I must have been passed out in 1993? Never heard about this album. Until watching your video . Just finished listening to it. It’s really good.
Great to hear this album get come love...I've always had a soft spot for it, get on the road and crank it up, happy days! I heard Mr Coverdale might be releasing some unreleased songs from this album...and perhaps a re release?....Fate of Nations is another wonderful album...good times!!
Yeah, Rock was moving forward & still producing the very last of what I call Classic Rock gems like this one, m!❤
Coverdales Voice was already done that time. He only shines when he use his dark bluesy voice.
Hey Mike, while we're talking post Zeppelin material, how about some thoughts on JPJ 's Zooma and Thunderthief, not for the timid for sure, wow
I bought it when it first came out. Liked it but didn’t love it. I find it has aged very well, and I enjoy it more now than I did back then.
Jimmy's best post-Zep work was the soundtrack to the film 'Deathwish II' IMO
Deep Purple broke up in 1976 and before the year was up (before the dust settled) we were presented with 4 excellent albums worthy of a spot in any true rock fan's collection.
Tommy Bolin's second and final album, Private Eyes
Glen Hughes' funk masterpiece, Play Me Out
Paice, Ashton and Lord's only release, Malice in Wonderland
David Coverdale's little R'n'B flavored solo debut, White Snake (two words).
Cheers!
David on the '74 DP tour & at the California Jam, 'Mistreated' is his. His vocal on 'Take Me for a Little While' is his as well.
Not a bad idea at all, Mike! Legacy Sessions! Love it!❤️
Love it! Only problem….at 78, Jimmy is no longer playing electric guitar,..only a bit of acoustic. As far as I know. The last time I heard him play electric was video of him and JPJ playing a couple of songs with The Foo Fighters at Wembley in 2008.
@@Taylor.Dude. oh yeah….I saw that years ago. Had forgotten about it. Thanks!
Corabi would be cool great singer guitarist.
Súper exelent opinion Michael . Muchas gracias. 👍
I am a big MK3 MK4 Deep Purple, so I was very much open to Coverdale/Page album & tour. The latter never happened with the exception of a tour of Japan. I found the drums on the album, too loud. I hope a remix will address that. The only tracks where’s their’s a bit of space for me is ‘Over Now’ & the Beatle- esque ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’
I picked this up a couple of years ago on cd.I didnt think it would be all that good, but it was.I was surprised.Good vid👍
Oh by the way the Led Zeppelin lighted ring on the wall really looks nice. That was a cool purchase.
Thanx Robin! I love it!
I'll have to check out that album. Thanks
Zeppelin. Cheerd
Pride & Joy ...good review video
I bought this when it first came out but I have to tell you after the first few tracks. The stigma really stood out. I really liked Pride and Joy but I don't think I ever got through the full disc. After listening to this I'm going to have to go back and listen. I do a lot of driving so I do it then....
Brilliant video.
Thanx, Alan!❤
I wish they had continued on. Love Coverdale & Page equally
good job by both of them, they didn't copy what they had been doing before the album. Any vocal coach can tell you that COVERDALE doesn't do anything PLANT would do vocally, they use a different technique. VOCAL RANGE get people confused, if you listen to live renditions of ZEPPELIN songs done by DAVID IT SHOWS really well what PLANT should do but he can't. songs were great and as performers there is nothing to be said
This was a great album. It’s unfortunate that they never toured North America with it. Also sad they didn’t release a recording of the Japan tour.
Not a bad song on that album, and has a perfect mixture of hard rock and blues.
i prefer LIVE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY or one of the great boots from that line up
Such a under rated album !! !!! cheers-VK
I really liked it. Liked his work with The Firm, but this was even better
I got you now! Good morning Michael.
Whew! Close one Sue! You had me worried there for a moment!
Too funny! I thought I went deaf! I was listening to music & it didn't switch over to you. I figured it out. It was a close one! 😂
to me this is pages best post Zeppelin work!
And for that alone, I praise the traveler of both time and space, Yt!❤❤❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine agreed…….and what a traveler he is….
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine what do you think of Page and Plant's Walking into Clarksdale?
This is in my top five of the 1990s for sure. Nothing wrong with it. I don't see a lot of these used, so my sense is that people hang on to this album.
What about Outrider? It has some nice instrumentals. XYZ (Page with Chris Squire and Alan White) is also on YT. The Firm too.
I agree
Definitely need to check out White snake...everything up to Slide it In. They have a certain groovy blues swagger about them
I absolutely agree great album the critics hated it because it was not Plant but I think it was awesome although I don’t share your love of grunge music I pretty much agree with you
Greetings Michael ✌️, The song that stands out for me is Easy Does It, this song totally kicks Ass!!!
I had Coverdale /Page on the cd player then it just clicked 😀I was focased on the road but also absorbing the music at the same time 😀That's when I said damn this is a really rockin record😀
I've loved it ever since😀
I would say this album did very well for itself considering it had to compete with the early 90s grunge scene. It may not be as strong or successful as “ Dirt “ or “ Nevermind “ but it’s still a solid piece.
Great episode,Michael! ✌️❤️🇨🇦
I agree with Robin. Lunch time!
Not lunch, Sue!
Remember a picnic is a state of mind! ❤️😉👌
Either way this is an UNDER APPRECIATED ALBUM!!
Man this kicks ass!!
I’ve been a Zephead since 1969 and in my opinion this album is as good as LZ3, HOTH, Presence and certainly better than ITTOD. I’m also pretty sure Jimmy Page has unreleased material of a similar quality that has not surfaced yet.
Great album, but I read years ago that it fell apart because of poor Tickets sales in Tampa, Fl.
I had wondered why there wasn’t a follow-up Gregory! Poor Ticket sales will do that for you every single time!🤔👌
I got this album when it was new and page is my favorite guitarist of all time and I’m a huge fan of his and I couldn’t latch on to one song .
Awesome Work
I really loved the Firm's stuff from their '86 album and also Jimmy's Outrider album in '88, could have been great Zeppelin stuff if they continued.
Brilliant record this album, was crazy on it back in my teenage years
I think this album is far, *FAR* better than Zeppelin's actual last album (In Through the Out Door) As far as I'm concerned, THIS is the true last Zeppelin album 😊 BTW, I've been collecting vinyl for over 40 years, but usually nothing super expensive or really 'out there', just albums that I really like to listen to. 👍
Bombastic, derivative, and at times a little tasteless but brilliant and i love it. Some killa grooves and some really freaky singing.
I like the firm and agree regarding your comments about the production on the first one Jan!❤
I really enjoyed The Firm and Jimmy seemed very happy during his time in them
Jimmy Page was very focus on this project. David Coverdale sounded like David Coverdale. Shake my tree was a rift that Jimmy came up with during the In Though The Outdoor sessions
Hell of a record.
Can't wait for the vinyl release on the anniversary next yesr..it's going to be good...
