    👿🔱😈.. I think one thing the old school rockers Mastered that every new band can't wrap their mind around is changing the tempo in the sound of the song throughout the song they seem to be stuck in one dimension playing style... they forget that it's the Mellow slower Parts in the song that make the heavy faster Parts sound that much more heavier you need to break in the the song... Zep and sabbath were the best at this i think

    I was there for the whole ride! Led Zeppelin in 1969 kicked off their iconic introductory tour with a playing a gig at a 🎪 circus tent in Framingham Massachusetts where at the time anyone who was anyone played. Hendrix, Joplin , Doors etc. It was in a residential neighborhood next to I-90 AKA the Mass. Pike. The neighbors complained about the noise 😑 🤔(imagine noise!) and the permit was pulled and the venue shut down. Zeppelin also played a gig in 1969 on the same iconic introductory tour at The Boston Tea Party. Probably the most iconic and well known venue in the Northeast! They played a very unusually long set that night and anyone who was there got a REAL treat! Steven Tyler was there and Tyler's girlfriend ended up going with Jimmy Page back to his hotel room for some after the show extra caricular activity. Ironic that theses two super stars became such good friends that Tyler and Perry were asked to host Zeppelin's introduction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Zeppelin's music definitely shaped the music word with their innovative and new sound! I was happy to be part of it! What a ride! Thanks for the memories and the music 🎶 🎵!

    "Gosh, it's hard enough writing the music one way around, let alone backwards" Jimmy is totally correct. Nobody in Led Zeppelin purposely wrote the lyrics so that they would form sounds of other words when played backwards. There are other bands who have added some backmasking on purpose but that was not the case with the lyrics to Stairway to Heaven. But the song played backwards does form audible words, and it's not just one part, it is throughout most of the song. Robert Plant's own retelling of the story of how he wrote the lyrics is very interesting, he claims that basically the words just came to him as if written automatically.

    I grew up on Led Zeppelin I'm 69 now, I borrowed there 1st album of a mates older brother back in 1970 to record on my tape recorder 'still at school so didnt have a lot of money' and he didn't get it back for a long time, but I did start spending my paper round money on Zeppelin 1 & 2 as soon as I could and of couse every one there after. In fact I ended up buying a 2nd set so I have a very well played set and a set not touched. I managed to get to see them twice at Earls Court, and then Knebworth also saw Page & Plant, but no way could I get tickets for the 02. I love them to bits especially Jimmy Page, there will never be another band to climb to the heights Jimmy took Zeppelin to. To make this story have an incredible ending my son James not only plays Les Paul guitars and a host of Zeppelin's music he actually looks the spitting image of Jimmy Page back in the early to mid 1970s, in fact they call him Pagey on jamnights. Thanks for reading.

(Many showmen and stagecrafters lack talent. They're just 'show' and 'flash'. Like many bubble gum 'metal' bands, and others.) I know this will piss many off, but with show and flash, and lacking talent and substance, KISS comes to mind. As does Triumph and whatever stupid band wrote, "Final Countdown". Love this! I learned things that I never knew about LZ which is crazy because I thought I knew it all lol!
    What I have been doing lately is finding every live version of “No Quarter” just to listen to the middle jam between JPJ, JHB, and JP. The longer the jam the better! That is the magic of LZ was the live recreation of studio masterpieces and the chemistry between the band. The song No Quarter use to creep me out as a kid fueled by the band being labeled as satanic and the band hiding satanic messages on albums. The creepy riffs that JPJ plays on the keyboard and the vocal filter used by plant added to my creepy vibe about the song. I had that same vibe as a kid with Black Sabbath and their song Black Sabbath. The rain storm at the beginning and the dramatic music and lyrics.
    Fast forward: I got older and realized that I was being a little ridiculous and after really listening to those masterpieces I became hooked on finding the live versions because of the fantastic JPJ driven jams between the 3 with Plant adding to the magic with his improv.
    Fun fact: LZ never played Fool in the rain live. Obviously with JHB passing away I wonder if they ever would have because of its complexity. The Bonham shuffle which to me, is a masterpiece of complex fantasticness!!!!!!😅
    Love this well put together documentary you created and I thank you, sir.

      @guitarmeetsscience  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much! Their version on the 1979 Knebworth show had JPJ in rare form... I like all the versions they did live but that would really stood out. It's like a buddy of mine from college who was completely afraid to listen to Pantera - the band just scared the hell out of him haha I don't know why I find that funny but I guess music has a real profound effect on people. Musically, no quarter has it all - one of the standout tracks of the '70s as far as I'm concerned. It is interesting that they never played fool in the rain live - I'm thinking probably the middle section was so involved they didn't want to try to duplicate it. Bonzo's Purdie shuffle (also employed on Steely Dan's "Babylon Sisters" by its originator Bernard Purdie) would have been very cool in a live setting.

    Jimmy has definitely been a heavy influence in my 35 + or - years playing guitar. Having grown up in the 70s, 80s and early 90s I've got a diverse far reaching musical taste and although I've considered some Cats to be some of my favorites, I don't think it's really possible to quantify someone's playing or style as the best when everyone kinda does it differently. You can have 2 guys from successful bands coming up in the same genre and they create two totally different things. In fact you could give every guitar God the same rig with the same settings and a backing track and neither will play the same thing nor will they sound alike. Jimmy Page could pick up EVH's guitar and not changing a thing about his tone and it would sound exactly like Jimmy Page not EVH...

    • @guitarmeetsscience
      @guitarmeetsscience  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is exactly right! Interesting thing is I remember there was an interview with Nuno betancourt - and he was hanging out with Eddie. Eddie had his guitar plugged in and was jamming away and then he handed his guitar to Nuno. Nuno started playing and asked Eddie why in the hell it didn't sound anything like what he was doing. He said that was a really big learning experience - and what you said in your comment really hit that home perfectly.

    No other band put their drummer upfront and center like Led Zeppelin did
    Even up until their last album, they put the drums upfront in the mix, especially on fool in the rain … and rightly so
    He was a great drummer and they wanted to show him off in the mix of all of their songs and it was the right thing to do. He wasn’t Buddy Rich and he wasn’t Neil… He was his own guy, and he was a monster on the drums, and Jimmy used him in a positive way in the production of all zeppelin songs…., It said that he died at such a young age there’s no telling what he would’ve become later in life..,, we can only guess

      @@janiterinadrum1627 That's the perfect description of Bonham's contributions to the band. Really he was the heaviness of that band. He was all about feel - and yeah like you said he didn't have the chops of Buddy Rich who was a freaking monster in his day. But bottom just had that certain something that made the music sway in a certain way. In a lot of ways he probably had more impact on music than he even got credit for because he actually modernized the sound of drums on recordings long before anybody else was doing it. But he took that from the jazz bands of the day, so it's pretty cool that he was able to actually make that crossover. Thanks for your comment I really appreciate that!

    My friends and I moved the LZIV record backwards on the turntable, and came up with the same line for the Satan thing, but I remember it not having anywhere near the clarity of your sample. If this had any real intent (not) then it would beg the questions: why did anyone even listen to it backwards to discover it in the first place?, and how many records did they do it with before finding anything?

    • @guitarmeetsscience
      @guitarmeetsscience  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You bring up a good point - it probably has to do with the fact that some bands actually did do it intentionally and let it be known. So then it became a quest to find other messages as well. Hell - in my own lyrics for songs I've recorded with bands I've played them backwards and I just keep hearing myself uttering my first name all the time lmao. The samples are clear on the video because I actually employed audio source separation to get the vocals all by themselves before I even attempted to reverse them. Without the music there it sounds much clearer.

      I'm getting that from a lot of people. I never said Zeppelin was heavy metal - remember led Zeppelin came out before Black Sabbath did their debut. Even when Black Sabbath did their debut metal wasn't officially a genre. Nor was hard Rock - led Zeppelin wasn't officially hard rock either. But they did do communication breakdown which was one of the hardest rocking songs of the day. Low and behold Sabbath's paranoid became the quintessential metal song, and it derived its influence from communication breakdown. So I didn't say Zeppelin was metal I said Zeppelin contributed to the dawn of heavy metal.

    I have to disagree that Page is the GOAT. Never heard of a guy named Hendrix? And even Jimmy would agree as well. Eric Clapton, after seeing Hendrix for the first time, couldn't pick up a guitar for 6 months. Same deal with Hendrix and Page and a myriad of greats that would agree as well because once you have seen nirvana, heaven is a close second. And I love all the greatest, and not so great (your opinion, not mine) but what it all comes down to it, who is/was the best. There are some absolutely brilliant players who only play Spanish or nylon, and usually have the greatest looking at the other guy and thinking " thats impossible, how did you do that" and the other guy just gives a little smile and thinks " My boy, you have much to learn ".

      Not a Page fan ? That’s fine but peoples opinions like who’s the best or better , is a lie , because it’s not a road race , where there’s a 1-2/3 rd place , Hendrix and Page , Beck etc are one of the greatest, now Beck is clean , more rock jazz , Hendrix was innovative and experimental, that’s a given . Now Hendrix died in 70 , had a four year career, except for his early work as a hired gun , little Richard , Isley brothers. Page from 1963 to today. Sessions , yardbirds, etc , he was far more creative and able to layer guitar parts to compose master pieces like , Achilles, for your life , Rain song , stairway , ten years gone etc , plus his acoustic work , the styles , folk rock blues Celtic , eastern influences, I could go on . But you get my point , Hendrix , Clapton any other people you want to mention, do not come close to Pages body of work . Period , those other players , play as well and some maybe better . But when you take their whole career, they don’t match Pages Cheers

    Dawn of Metal was Tony Iommi.

    • @guitarmeetsscience
      @guitarmeetsscience  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Look at the timeline - Black Sabbath's first album comes out in 1970 so they were not widespread by that point. Page was already doing dazed and confused with the Yardbirds before Zeppelin's first album even came out in 1968. Zeppelin was hitting it hard before Sabbath even came out. Not to discredit Tony of course - because he ran with it and made it so much so darker. Either way the real father of heavy metal was most likely Link Wray anyhow

      @@guitarmeetsscience I don't think there was a real father (or mother) of Heavy Metal. Kinks, Who, Henrix and Cream are all very central. For me, The Ox by the Who (1965) is the first real metal tune. It is brutal even by today's standards.

Regarding Black Sabbath, Ozzy said that they were inspired too. Iommi made the song Paranoid after inspiration from Communication Breakdown. Ozzy told him that the riff perhaps was too similar. No, it will work, Iommi thought. Great video!

I paid big money both times I saw Zeppelin in the 70s, and was thoroughly disappointed both times...
