Just subscribed going to try this Im interested in doing this technique on my Orks army but how would or well do you think this technique be used on death guard or have you tried?

ive painted like 90 stormboyz and never realized those little flaps on the side of their helmet might supposed to be leather. this is great, thanks for sharing

This is such an awesome tut. I learnt so much in such little time. I am new to mini painting and this is exactly the art style I wanted. A proper grimdark, how I imagine 40k to be. I’m going to test on my space marines.

Nice, thank you. I usually start cleaning the oil wash right way, when it ii's still wet. Allows you to modulate tone a lot more, than when it's dry already

If you add a little linseed oil to your white spirit thinner you get more working time. NJM uses a 10:1 ratio I believe.

Dipping. Anyone else remember that period of time in of the hobby? Dip your basecoated mini in a can of wood stain, remove and then spin the mini on a power drill to fling the excess off.

Visually they are stunning, how about for table top play? Do you find the oils coming off in your hands after repeated use?
You probably put a matt varnish over them
Do you have to varnish the model before doing the oils step?
A lot of TH-camrs say to varnish before you oil paint to protect the paint layers beneath, do you find that this is necessary? I keep trying to use oil paints but I am left with coffee staining and the paint begins to peel when I try and remove it with the makeup brush.
I'm painting white models though.
Any advice appreciated.
Nice video. I find I get much better results using small makeup sponge brushes to remove the excess oil. They're easier to work into tight areas and don't leave cotton fibers stuck to the model like Qtips do.

Grimdark for me is the ONLY way to truly represenmt 40K and your tutorial is easy to follow and produces some great results. I especially like how you speak to both the airbrush and paint brush crowd as not everyone has an airbrush (or if your like me, has and airbrush and just hasn't gotten around to learning how to use it yet 😃)
When you did the 2nd wash of grime, did you remove it with a dry Qtip or wet? Or did you just leave some areas covered and remove the grim for highlights? Looks really good
Before I did the second grime wash I first sealed the whole model with a Matt Varnish, but removed it mostly with a dry qtip so more grime was left

Ok now this looks cool. I have been trying to find inspo for some grim dark orks. But I really dislike how greasy and slimy people tend to make em. This and Mezgike’s ork boss biker are the top 2 for me.
Great video, on the airbrush it looks very blue , fid you go from black to just white. Also was the white an ink?
Thanks, yeah the black I used is a very cold black so can look blueish but it was just black, and yes the white was an ink :)

Thanks! Yeah if you do a layer of the oil washes and aren't happy and want to do a second layer, give it a matt varnish otherwise you'll have to wait for the first wash to fully dry which can take some time.

Thanks! Nope no need to varnish before the first oil, just be gentle with the cotton buds and if your finding your lifting paint off then maybe a varnish in future!

what did you use to thin the ink, please? I was going to get the transparent version of that, but if you ca just thin the semi one, might as well just get that.

Hi, I was just wondering how I'd adapt this as a colour scheme such as blue armour panels? Maybe use Gulliman Blue as a glaze over the metal? Thanks, great video :)
Yeah I would think that would work perfectly, you could even pick a few armour panels and paint them a solid blue colour to break it up a bit!
Hey! great video definetly gonna try it with my beast snaggas. I have just one question about oils, can i use turpentine instead of mineral spirits?
Hi, many thanks! I wouldn't personally recommend turpentine as it can leave a residue in the brushes and is really stinky!

I have questions:
1- The q-tip (however it's spelled) becomes a mess of loose hair bits very quickly, why doesn't yours also unwind?
2- When I use white spirits to reactivate the oils and remove them, I often also remove the paint below. It seems white spirits also dissolve the acryllics. Any workaround (that isn't varnishing the whole mini? Varnishing with an airbrush is hella easy, but I don't have an airbrush)
1 - I found that using "expensive" higher quality q-tips better for this sort of thing, i've found they dont unwind as easily as the store bought cheap ones, and have less stray hairs, the ones im using in this video I got off Amazon.
2 - The white spirit I use doesn't react with acrylics at all, it may be that your acrylics aren't fully dry, so any liquid would remove them. It may be worth leaving the model overnight to fully cure, acrylics can touch dry quicky but wont fully cure for 24 hours or more depending on thickness. You could also invest in aerosol based varnishes as these wont require an airbrush.

How strong are the oils when moving the model? Do they rub off the model when they come into contact with skin?
When they're fully dried they don't rub off without significant force, but if in doubt give them a varnish when finished to be sure!
Nice, is that Liquitex Acrylic White Ink? What/How was that sued in the vid? (didn't see it get used? Unless you used it for the white checkers?)
Yeah its Liquitex Acrylic White, and I used it in the zenithal highlight step with with airbrush

This is totally inspiring me to try painting a grimdark style on one of the new Beast Snagga minis.
Dark grey grey and white is a more realistic zenthal since shadows are never black. I rarely use black as a zenthal anymore outside of terrain

I've never used the AK products but might be worth giving it a go and seeing! If they are oil based it should work to some extent
Did you varnish before adding the oil wash?
I didn't with this model but if your concerned you can varnish

Hey I need to totally change my crap technique of painting and will take a lot from this style. Are the oil paints any good and are you diluting them with white spirits?
I use Windsor and Newton Oil paints, better quality oils are preferred as they thin down better, and yeah I use odourless white spirit to thin 😀

Ffs i tryed this meganta+ black and mix with thinner i applyed it to the skinn. Let it dry for 1 hour then when i was scratching away the wash i also removed the under colors????! Everything came down to no colour at all caus the thinner removes it.. absurd shouldent you apply the model with varnish to protect the under colours??

I can honestly say that when using oil paint, thinned with odourless thinner, over the top of acrylic that it's never reacted. When rubbing with the cotton buds use little to no pressure otherwise you can rub off the acrylic layer so be extra careful. If you are concerned, feel free to use varnishes!
Did you not varnish before going onto oils?!? I thought you had to? If you don't it's a game changer for me
Nope as long as the acrylic has fully dried (you can leave overnight if worried) you'll have no issues. White spirit isn't reactive with acrylic, unless the acrylic hasn't fully cured and even then it's just because the white spirit is a liquid and not its chemical makeup!

My favorite part was when you said (paraphrasing) "the next step is painting the leather parts" and immediately start painting a rigid, metal helmet part. I realize it's a personal aesthetic choice, but compared to the way all the leather on the model is sculpted, the helmet's rigidity and large flat areas down the sides of the face read to the eye as a completely different surface type (even without paint) compared to the way the raised edges of straps curve upwards, or the way the larger areas wrinkle (technically most is cloth on the sculpt, other than the boots, but easily can read as leather if painted that way). But like I said, personal choice, and this hobby is all about doing it how you want (though GW is sadly moving away from this idea... looted wagons... sigh).
Overall great tutorial video with clear concise points and really great tips (would never have thought of pre-washing red around teeth)! I'm subscribing and checking out your other stuff! Cheers!
Just started the ork army but whole oil tehnique looks a little bit risky i am afraid that i will screw models i already painted
If you don't like it, just clean them off with mineral spirits before the oils dry... if there is still some in the cracks, soak them in the mineral spirits and then rinse off thoroughly. Shouldn't damage your acrylics at all, rinse thoroughly so the next acrylic you apply actually sticks.
It's worth noting that using oils usually looks really good, especially if you remove most of it. You could paint a model bare-bones basic single colors, no shades or highlights, apply oils, remove from all raised and flat areas, and bam, you have a decent, table-ready model.
Super batch-paint speed-hack with decent results: black prime, very generous white zenithal spray, contrast paints, oil wash + removal, a few key extra highlights and details picked out with brushwork (any glow you want to do, gems, lights, eyes, text on purity seals etc)
PS: every other tutorial I've seen for using oils like this video have no instruction to wait for dying, and they use make-up sponge sticks to remove it. Oils take longer to dry and can be worked with and blended the entire time they're still wet (highly encouraged actually, this is why canvas oil paintings looks so good... smooth blends baby). This is why with acrylics (when doing traditional canvas painting) one uses lots of mediums to extend the working time of the paint so that it can behave more like oils.
