I've left this message on other sites with this song, but I will repeat. The line "in 69 I was 21" gets me because like you my mind was running the road but my ass was in Nam. I too have cancer but have lost no loved ones. My heart goes out to you. I can not believe the time that has gone by since then. There are WWII vets around and there will be some of us for a while and we will fade into history as just the first lose war, just like Afghanistan vets will do also.

Leland does so much more than just anchor the band/song with effortless bass playing. His presence is steady and Zen-like. You can clearly see him giving intentional comfort and ease to Jackson Browne. This guy is a national treasure.

Agree, personally I think its because his lyrics and message was way more complex than, say, James Taylor (who I love, but really, wasn't all that deep lyrically). Jackson challenged people, he wasn't "easy."

I'd rather say that old folks can play great music (although Russ Kunkel didn't get his groove really going until near the end of the piece ... but it's hard to play a generic "awards show" type kit). It's all real music. There's young kids playing with the mind-blowing skills they have only because these guys took their instruments beyond the prior generation, each generation taking music places our imagination and our skills couldn't take us before. This music does feel like home to me too ... but it's all real music.
There’s lots of real music these days. You sound like my parents talking about rock ‘n roll. No ones forgetting how to play. They are just playing for a different generation. Just like these guys did all those years ago.

Kept me out of trouble, a lot of Marines go into town and get drunk and fight a lot. So I listened to music to keep out of trouble. I had around 20 cassette tapes to listen to. Doug..I am 49. My dad and I listened to doo wap ,country and the Eagles when I was a kid. He passed when I was 18, but his love for music that he instilled on me will be with me till I die. My dad's parents had a tavern in the 50's and 60's . After my grandparents sold the tavern.. my dad and I would sit by our old Zenith home stereo and play records from the jukebox from his parents old tavern. I would read out titles that I had never heard of and he would say...yeah great song ..put it on. I learned so much great music from him. I learned to love music. I played drums in a local band for 27 years. In my life...there has been so many influences. Jackson Browne is one of my favs. Thank you!!
My wife and I saw him in play a solo show in Baltimore several years ago. Sixteen guitars, a grand piano, his wonderful voice and a truckload of brilliant songs. It takes tremendous talent, courage and humility to play solo shows. I saw Dan Fogelberg do it in 1983 or so and it was the same: tremendous musicianship, excellent vocals and amazing talent. RIP Dan. Keep playing Jackson.

Hell, Lee Sklar has worked with every group that didn't have a permanent Bass player of their own. He's probably worked with a few groups that did have one.
I was trying to tell someone about Lee a couple years ago. I'd never looked anything up on him. After I saw what they had on Wiki on him, I told the guy that it would make much more sense to draw up a list of who Sklar HASN'T played with. The list of who he's played with there is so ridiculously long. I finally met him at the NAMM show a couple years ago. Super nice guy too!
The Section is probably the Live touring version of the Wrecking Crew, who were the Studio Musicians for so many Groups in the 1970's. Long history and played for the Who's Who of Music.
This is so absolutely incredible that it's almost hard to believe. You haven't seen or will ever see this again. We've simply fallen off a cliff when it comes to music or culture really. Man super happy I grew up with this ❤👍🤘🙏🎸
Jackson still has that recognizable beautiful voice . I listen to his old music every day not only for the poetry but because of David Lindley's steel and especially his violin which I find addictive.
Still awesome after all these years. We played this a lot in my Navy days when we were deep in construction and tired and waiting for supplies. We kept running on fumes and would play tnis on the boombox all the time. Classic
the damn college kids began copying music and made it impossible for bands to get paid. the 70's and 60's gave us great music because they were paid paid extremely well. Not so much today.
Rick Beato has some specific theories, but my own thought is that the lawyers and accounts have completely taken over the mainstream music sources. Look at radio, with it's narrow-casting of the same 20 or so songs over and over. When we grew up, you would listen to radio and they'd play Cream followed by The Jackson Five followed by Classical Gas, Hair, CCR, Bowie, etc. We had a wide variety of influences, and the music was all the better for it. Take away their autotune and most of today's "talent" would be history.

This was my theme song driving Interstate 80, home to Michigan in 1978 after a three-year stint of military service in California. Those years from 19 to 21 are so formidable. Just when I thought I'd seen it all, I went to Europe for three more years of duty. You begin to realize that you grow up in stages. Suddenly, it's been another forty years of living, loving, winning and losing, grand kids, grand illusions and everything else Jackson sang about in this song. How many of us are still running into the sun not knowing what we will find? Hopefully, more kindness and love in this world as we kick Covid-19's ass here in 2020?💝
Man there is a lot of 70s-80s talent there. Lee Sklar..... Russ Kunkel.....Danny Kootch Kortchmar and Craig Doerge are legends in my world. They show up all over my vinyl. And Rosemary Butler...OMG Rosemary is my favorite female voice. She deserved stardom in her own right. There is great music in every era...this backing group is truly greatness. I love this!

I can remember , as if was 12 hours ago rather than 43 years , my good friend Corrine Ellington me that I just had to ear the most brilliant album. It was The Pretender. That evening has stayed with me so long because it changed the way I listened to music forever. Thankyou, you have given so much joy.

My first concert was Jackon Browne in the mid-seventies in Lexington, Ky...I fell in love with his music. My son was born in 1980 and he would put Jackson''s album on, headphones on, get on his rocking horse and ride and sing like crazy! He was maybe 3 when he learned the words! He still loves his music. What a awesome memory to have! I still love his voice and music!
There is the best part of 500 years of combined talent on that one stage! Their talent is phenomenal and the best thing is they are still enjoying performing, the enthusiasm of Danny Kortchmar is awesome especially. Just think, those are possibly some peoples grandparents, how cool is that!

Was just thinking about Rosemary Butler the other day and was wondering if she were still with us. Here she is. And Jackson Browne is still the greatest of all time.
The musicians in this group are excellent in their own field and play as tight as any top band. But as a bass player of many years standing i have to say that it is going to be very difficult to best Leland Sklar as he is without doubt other than John Entwhistle the greatest bass player of all time. If you watch this video carefully you will notice that he feels the song with his body movements and is completely absorbed in the song and he looks at the other main player either singer or the lead guitar as if joined at the hip. His runs are not over the top and in fact are just what the song needs, his run at the end of the song is just brilliant as is the timing in the hook at about 4.00 when he and the lead guitar are in unison. You should also notice how he keeps the driving beat by playing the same note on different strings. There are no false notes and in fact he is the heart of this song as the bass the main driver. You don't get to play with the greatest performers by being average or even excellent you have to be the best. He has benefitted from playing with different instrumentalists in various styles over the many years and it shows in his mastery of the bass guitar. I am in awe of his playing and would be over the moon if i could just have a small portion of his talent.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't heard Mr. Brown in a very long time. Even with the collection of CD's I own, I don't have one for Jackson. I will remedy that in short order. As I try to type this, the tears are streaming down. He sounds every bit as good now as he ever has. Mr. Brown, if by chance you ever read this, thank you for all the legendary music you've gifted us. Also, the tears I cry are not from sadness. They are tears of joy. Tears of joy....
Oct 9th JB will be 70 yrs old. Love you Mr.Browne and so happy your still here with us. You were my favorite male singer of the 70's and Melanie was my favorite female singer. Always wished you two would have done a duet.

When I was 16 I bought 'Late for the sky' and heard these lyrics for the first time , now I'm 61 and 'I'm still runnin' on '... along with Dylan, The Beatles , Joni , Neil , Jackson is still one of my favourite songwriter/ lyricists.
It's a natural process and been happening since time began but when I think that so many musicians that brought so much joy and sparked so many memories in my lifetime will probably be gone in another 20 years, that's still 20 years but it feels like the millennium was only yesterday and yet probably a third of my life has passed since then. the damn college kids began copying music and made it impossible for bands to get paid. the 70's and 60's gave us great music because they were paid paid extremely well. Not so much today.

Rick Beato has some specific theories, but my own thought is that the lawyers and accounts have completely taken over the mainstream music sources.
Look at radio, with it's narrow-casting of the same 20 or so songs over and over. When we grew up, you would listen to radio and they'd play Cream followed by The Jackson Five followed by Classical Gas, Hair, CCR, Bowie, etc.
We had a wide variety of influences, and the music was all the better for it.
Take away their autotune and most of today's "talent" would be history.

This was my theme song driving Interstate 80, home to Michigan in 1978 after a three-year stint of military service in California. Those years from 19 to 21 are so formidable. Just when I thought I'd seen it all, I went to Europe for three more years of duty. You begin to realize that you grow up in stages. Suddenly, it's been another forty years of living, loving, winning and losing, grand kids, grand illusions and everything else Jackson sang about in this song. How many of us are still running into the sun not knowing what we will find? Hopefully, more kindness and love in this world as we kick Covid-19's ass here in 2020?💝

And Rosemary Butler...OMG Rosemary is my favorite female voice. She deserved stardom in her own right. There is great music in every era...this backing group is truly greatness. I love this!

My first concert was Jackon Browne in the mid-seventies in Lexington, Ky...I fell in love with his music. My son was born in 1980 and he would put Jackson''s album on, headphones on, get on his rocking horse and ride and sing like crazy! He was maybe 3 when he learned the words! He still loves his music. What a awesome memory to have! I still love his voice and music!
There is the best part of 500 years of combined talent on that one stage! Their talent is phenomenal and the best thing is they are still enjoying performing, the enthusiasm of Danny Kortchmar is awesome especially. Just think, those are possibly some peoples grandparents, how cool is that!

The musicians in this group are excellent in their own field and play as tight as any top band. But as a bass player of many years standing i have to say that it is going to be very difficult to best Leland Sklar as he is without doubt other than John Entwhistle the greatest bass player of all time. If you watch this video carefully you will notice that he feels the song with his body movements and is completely absorbed in the song and he looks at the other main player either singer or the lead guitar as if joined at the hip. His runs are not over the top and in fact are just what the song needs, his run at the end of the song is just brilliant as is the timing in the hook at about 4.00 when he and the lead guitar are in unison. You should also notice how he keeps the driving beat by playing the same note on different strings. There are no false notes and in fact he is the heart of this song as the bass the main driver. You don't get to play with the greatest performers by being average or even excellent you have to be the best. He has benefitted from playing with different instrumentalists in various styles over the many years and it shows in his mastery of the bass guitar. I am in awe of his playing and would be over the moon if i could just have a small portion of his talent.
Man, I've been so nostalgic lately. JB counting down and the first notes being hit brought me to tears. These guys are gold. Legends. Just the best. I grew up in the 70s and there's nothing like the music from that time.
This is one of those songs that speaks to your soul.

It's a natural process and been happening since time began but when I think that so many musicians that brought so much joy and sparked so many memories in my lifetime will probably be gone in another 20 years, that's still 20 years but it feels like the millennium was only yesterday and yet probably a third of my life has passed since then.
