    All Nippon Airways - ANA - is well-regarded as an outstanding airline. But how will they do on a short overnight flight from Singapore to Tokyo? Had an accident with the (vanilla) ice-cream a while ago.
    Trying to lever a chunk out of the punnet, suddenly the spoon flicked it into the air - it described a rather elegant arc before falling into the lap of someone sitting a couple rows ahead of me! They looked up, as if expecting to see a seagull, and I petended to be doing something else entirely!

    ANA are singularly the best airline I have ever flown. You could eat your dinner off the floor it is so clean. I hadn't eaten my noodles and the hostess assured me that they were the best thing on the dish , so she sat down beside me , opened a sachet of sauce , pored it over the noodles and proceeded to hand feed me with chopsticks. When she found that I had never tasted Sake she immediately returned with a freshly warmed glass for me to taste and then proceeded to gift me a 4 pack of Sake. Believe it or not , I was only flying economy but there were very few passengers. When I related this story to my wife , she suggested that the sweet lady may have taken a fancy to me ..... Go ANA !!

    I was wondering if there was going to be a Japanese train review but forgot the travel restrictions. Been waiting FOREVER for a review on a Japanese Carrier. I have used ANA a few times and they never disappoint (although JAL is close second). Great review! My personal favourite airlines are 1. Singapore 2. Cathay 3. ANA 4. JAL

    Japanese toilet may not have made it to Europe, but it's becoming quite popular in the US. Most new homes are already build with a power outlet near the toilet. They are also showing up at airports and some US workplaces. I wish they become a common thing on planes and airports.

      I hope so too! Before the pandemic, I do understand that ANA used T2 at Singapore Changi Airport, with lounge access provided by Singapore Airlines at the Silver Kris Lounge. Once T2 completely reopens, they could either move back to T2 or even move to T3 to ease congestion at T1. We'll know it once more info comes.

    Not a fan of security at the gate. The holding area before you get on the plane has no toilet. You can be held there for upto an hour. Which means going back through security to use the toilet. Then being screened again to get to the holding area.

    Nice video as always. The problem with lounges and airports is that eventually, it starts to blend together. Same-ish food, same-ish interior. I still enjoy it, but...btw one small tip. When you do close-up shots. I am not sure what editing software you are using, but final cut pro has this software stabilization functionality and it does wonders. Especially when your footage is already relatively stable. But it will completely remove the shakiness of the footage. I find it easier on the eyes.

    When I was younger (in the 90s) I always thought it was normal to have security at the gate as I was an expat kid who regularly travelled between two of the few places that did it that way -- AMS and SIN.
    AMS has since converted to central security. There are upsides and downsides to both imo.

    I have flown them 75 times in J international and Y on domestic mostly and an amazing airline. Great ground service and assistance and just as important helpful and courteous Mileage Club and programme. Always liked the fact I can fly J from SYD to LHR/FRA etc with low mileage and taxes cf to Oneworld.
    When living in DLC (Dalian) their daily 788 service rarely full and exceptional service and DLC office always called to confirm assistance and meal choice and also made me aware of any mileage expirations. Well done

    As far as security at the gate, that's pretty much the case in SE and NE Asia as far as memory serves. It's also the case at CDG 1, isn't it. I much prefer it to the US/Chinese/UK big security lanes up front - I find it makes the airport experience less fastidious, and more pleasant.

    I don’t like Changi’s security at the gate. Simple things like trying to take your own water on board (I still do this in premium cabins as I like to stay hydrated) is a challenge. Some gates have refill stations after security, others don’t.

  • @88jerryw88
    @88jerryw88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Paul I hope you can answer my question.
    What do you use (or what equipment) for when recording take off and landing footages? Do you simply use your hand to hold the camera and record the footage? Or do you have some sort of camera holder/plug and stick it on to the aircraft window and record the footage? If it’s using something to plug on to the window and record. What are the equipment that you use to do that? Please do tell.

    I don't know how I feel about at-gate security clearance. It might work in an airport such as SIN, where the risk of terrorism is low, but I would feel unsafe if it was put in place at any airport in the USA, Europe or the Middle East, where the risk of terrorism is much higher.

    • @OhHeyItsShan
      @OhHeyItsShan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the one thing I hate about security gate side. Like I bought a water bottle in the departure area but this is where they confiscate it.. why? I'm literally walking onto a plane that is going to issue me a water bottle when I request one to drink. Bringing one on board at this point should be allowed. If they vetted that it is water then there is no reason to confiscate it. I could just as easily take an empty bottle and fill it up in the toilet or ask for a bottle during drinks service. It makes no sense. Happened to me in Hong Kong and Singapore.

    Really enjoyed the video! Quick question about the pricing though. I know your description said the tickets were bought at a time when prices were low, but was the price you mentioned in the video only for this leg of your journey, or did it cover the entire Singapore-New York trip? And what country were you buying those tickets from (through the VPN)? I'm not using a VPN, but when I price tickets from Texas to London, it typically comes out $1600-$1800 per person...for coach. Wondering if there's a way to get those significantly cheaper.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No tricks here, that was the one way fare, SIN-HND-JFK. Japan was locked down to tourists (still is) and ANA tried some strangely cheap fares to fill planes. Tickets bought before the Ukraine war and oil price spike too.

    Regarding the lack of a pre-take off drink, I recently travelled in Air Canada’s Signature Business Class where no drink was offered. I suspect it’s a Covid thing as unfortunately masks are still compulsory and they don’t want to give you an excuse to remove yours whilst the aircraft is still boarding. It’s only a small thing but first impressions count.

    • @JuanWayTrips
      @JuanWayTrips 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They definitely use COVID as an excuse, but it's a money-saving measure instead. I flew Hawaiian FC in 2021 (rare FC booking for me since it was for our honeymoon) and they served pre-departure beverages in glasses while no one else did. And mind you, Hawaii had the strictest COVID protocols in the US at the time, so they could have easily used that excuse but didn't.
      To me, PDBs don't make or break the flight. It's nice when it's there, but I'll also be happy if there's just water. Just don't lie and say it's for COVID reasons.

      @@JuanWayTrips to be fair they didn’t actually say it was a Covid measure, I just suspected it was as the mask mandate was still ‘enthusiastically’ enforced.

      It wasn’t available to non-SQ *A passengers on this date due to social distancing. Relaxed in June I believe.

    Security at the gate is much preferred. It cuts down on the congestion at the main security checkpoints. Also, if each gate has its own security, once you reach the security line, you're pretty much guaranteed you'll get on the flight (even if there is a delay in security screening) as each passenger will need to be screened before they board.

    Another nice vlog Paul. *Wonders whether there is correlation between Japanese not being side-sleepers, with the inconveniently placed tray handle* 🤔

    I find it rather annoying, having a security check right before the Boarding Gate. I prefer to have it done right after check in.

    ANA is still in full “ pandemic” mode so don’t expect a full Pre “ pandemic” experience
    Paul how much paperwork did u need for your Tokyo layover ?
    The seat being by the window with storage closer to the aisle is good

      No paperwork, as I didn’t enter the country (it’s closed to tourists). ANA are on full service, this isn’t a reduced offering.

      You can transit through Japan as long as your final destination isn't China. That is the only country blocked at the moment for transit passengers.
