They shouldn't make any new random stories about lotr. As cool as it is, they cant bring back all the original actors and theses extra stories might draw away attention from the real thing. The hunt for gollum movie looks cool though. Just don't turn the greatest movie/book trilogy of all time into an anime!!

The Witch King was one of the greatest of the Nazgul. To my mind, he is the single most pivotal character in the whole story. Without the Witch King, Sauron would not have had a Darth Vader type to marshal his forces in the field. Can you imagine a story about the man who who wrestled with his ring before he broke and bent knee to Sauron, only to rise as his chief lieutenant in the tragic end? Come to think of it, I would really enjoy seeing a trilogy devoted to the life and fall of each of the wraiths, personally.

Faramir said " I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend." I'm a rabid Lord of the Rings fan and have been for many many decades, but of the books. I love the books, and like Christopher Lee, re-read them almost every year. And I like the films VERY much and will watch them every chance I get. But these proposed films seem like war movies. Battle movies. That quote from Faramir was really Tolkien himself speaking because those were his feelings. There's nothing I'd like more than "more Middle Earth." Middle earth has been a part of my life and my consciousness my entire life. But please, stay loyal to Tolkien's vision. Don't make war stories the central theme. Have them support a story, don't make them BE the story. Because that's NOT "Tolkien."

The Hollywood of today has actually managed to get me to a point where I do not get hyped anymore, and this video has made that awfully clear to me.
Obviously, the original Lord of the Rings trilogy is among the best that was ever put to screen - a perfect adaptation, free of any modern-day influence or bias, as well as the perfect blend of amazing sets, practical effects and CG, and Peter Jackson deserves to be forever praised for tackling the books that way. He displayed a rare feat of absolute integrity and understanding when he decided that the trilogy wasn't a vehicle for his own political views or his artistic and creative freedom as a writer, and that it should be told the way Tolkien already told it.
And yet, on the one hand we have a beloved franchise that hasn't seen a single similarly great release since the original trilogy, that manages to disappoint and get worse with each subsequent release - and not just Rings of Power, as this video shows the logo for the pathetic War of the Rohirrim every time Philippa Boyens is mentioned (who also brought us "bangers" like Mortal Engines and The Lovely Bones, btw.) - and on the other hand we have seen, time after time, that a creator of a beloved franchise coming back to it after decades doesn't guarantee anything great or even just good. Ridley Scott, the genius who brought us the first two Alien movies, has not only recently killed that franchise and kicked its corpse down the road ever since Prometheus, he was also an executive producer on Gladiator and recently gave us a sequel to that great movie that nobody asked for and I wish had never been made - an uninspired rehash of the original but without any of the care and internal consistency that went into it. We've also seen it with Peter Jackson himself, when he showed us with his Hobbit trilogy that he, apparently, didn't have another LotR in him. Of course, there's also James Cameron who, much like Ridley Scott with Alien and Aliens, had managed to follow up a banger movie - the Terminator - with a sequel that was just as good if not even better, and then went and mutilated his own legacy with a deluge of new movies that do everything to "let the past die - kill it if you must".
Your pitches for potential trilogies both sound promising, and you did a stellar job with the artwork you chose to visualize the scenes, but no, I'm not hyped or even cautiously optimistic for yet another attempt by modern Hollywood to cash in on the fans' nostalgia for a truly great (set of) movie(s) from a time where good movies were still a somewhat normal thing. If this new Gollum movie (that I don't consider "necessary" in the first place) turns out good - great. But if it's utter shite, I won't be even a little bit surprised. Good on Viggo, if he actually does keep away from the project because of a bad script.

The Peter Jackson movies are not perfect. They don't have the scouring of the shire and they change too much of the original story for cheap narrative effects that result in plot holes. The characters of Denethor and Faramir are also crude and one dimensional in the movies and very far from being faithful to the story.

Aliens (Alien 2) is James Cameron's film. Ridley Scott made only the first installment. I almost agree with you. But the part when Orlando Bloom slides in a board from stairs or jumps back on on a horse in some reverse time trick-what was that!? What a total b$ was the part in Moria, where they were balancing the few yausend ton stone wall? The ending was also changed, arguable to better suit medium requirements. The problem I see with the Witch-King story is that there can be no happy - or even hopeful ending. Arnor and its cities fell long ago, and would not rise again until King Elessar (Aragorn) declared his intention to rebuild it after Sauron’s destruction. Telling the story of Arnor with a hopeful ending would involve bringing the storyline all the way to the Witch-King’s death by Eowyn’s hand during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and I’m not sure that could be done in a realistic manner.
On the other hand, I could see the conflicts of the rest of Middle-Earth during the Lord of the Rings having some real potential. In spite of Boromir’s perspective, Gondor was not the be-all and end-all of the defense of Middle-Earth against Sauron, nor was the Fellowship. If not for many other people in many other places, the War of the Ring could have ended quite differently. Tolkien himself refers to this when he talks about King Dain and King Brand (the grandson of King Bard) defending Erebor. Even though we know Sauron will ultimately be destroyed, not knowing what would happen to all of these other pockets of resistance and their characters could add a lot of dramatic tension. I’d definitely love to see that!

I’d actually love to see a trilogy centering on the House of Finwe and his sons, especially Feanor and the scheming of Morgoth/Melkor which led to the Noldor’s bloody return to Middle-Earth, the theft of the Silmarils, and the curse laid upon the House of Feanor. There’s a lot of story to be told here, and it could easily be broken into a trilogy of films with one apiece dedicated to Feanor, Fingolfin, and Finarfin. It would need to end with the latter, since he alone is still alive (presumably) and still serves as High King of the Noldor elves across the sea. But on the whole, it’s as dramatic and action-packed a tale as the LotR books, and it would make for some spectacular scenes and sequences. It also provides quite a bit of history that ties in with the Rings of Power series, and fleshes out Middle-Earth as a whole.

    • @Archeophis
      @Archeophis หลายเดือนก่อน +2

True. But the problem is, the writing that Tolkien did about the House of Finwë is relatively small. It is written in the way that Celtic and Norse sagas were written. The Lord of the Rings, and the Hobbit, were written as novels, with deep character development and description of the 'feel" of everything -- that is the reason why they are so enthralling, and the reason why we go to the Silmarillion and the Tales, and crave for more. The sheer size of Lord of the Rings somewhat prevented the screenwriters from departing too much from the original material, and called for a respectful director, which Jackson was.
Now, the saga of the House of Finwë, or any other story from the Silmarillion and Tales, to be made into a film would need the screenwriters to do actual creative work. And you have seen what happens when they do, when they do not have their hands tied and restrained: you have seen Rings of Power. Be it for the appeal of shock (like in Song of Ice and Fire, where they actually bought the writing soul of Martin out with money to transform the books into violence-porn), or for injecting the least subtle popular ideology du jour (like the pitiful RoP), the entertainment industry will chew up even the best stories and vomit them out into pigswill that they suppose will appeal to the brainless masses. Give them a story that needs to be fleshed up to become a film, and they will produce some utter monstrosity.
I wish there could be good films made out of some of the immense quantity of interconnected themes and stories that Tolkien created. But it cannot be done properly without respect. And I have very little hope that that respect can be found.

Nope. Not now. We need to let the current generation of writers leave the field. They have way too much "main character syndrome" and doesn't know a good story or decent dialogue if it bit them in their stupid arse.

Oh we absolutely want LoTR content, there is definitely a huge fan base wanting more content, the problem is them if they decide to pull weird stuff again and massively deviate from the source material trying to appeal a fanbase that doesn't really exist. The original 3 were a master piece, don't need to invent the wheel again, go for the same public, make minimal changes to the main story just like with the original 3, and we'll love it, even if lots of CGI are used to reduce production time.

The only ethnicities Tolkien described in middle-earth were Scandinavian / northern European, Mediterranean, Mongolian looking (rhun), and Arab looking (Harad / Southrons). It's patronising to suggest that people need to see a "reflection of themselves" on screen in order to enjoy a movie. All it does is remind us we're watching a modern film and pulls us out of the submersion, as well as not making sense in terms of world-building.

Turning those two pages about the hunt for Gollum in the book into ONE movie would even be a stretch, but making it TWO movies is just insane. Super-sceptic! Nothing Tolkien-related gets good when it's dragged out. Nothing has ever come close to the masterpiece of the LOTR-trilogy, where they instead had to trim the story down. All dragging-stuff-out into more releases to make more money always results in reduced quality and negatively effects all good that came before. The more they make, the less special each release feels. Just look at how Disney destroyed Star Wars. Less is often more. If we are shown everything and more that takes away the mysticism and wonder, which is a huge part of what makes it great. Recasting people breaks the illusion of the world feeling real, but so does casting the same actor looking much older in a time where he should look younger or the same.

Aragorn leads a band of Rangers hunting for Gollum, one of them is female, she's the boss and tells every incompetent man what to do then single handedly finds Gollum herself. The End. At best it'll be another Hobbit situation because this is not a trilogy's worth of lore. If this is a trilogy then they should still be making LoTR movies to this day. Either way I have zero faith in this project. Hollywood is simply not in the same place it was 20 years ago.

I’ll personally just wait for the trailer and look out for any… suspicious activity present within it… and then decide wether I’ll spend my hard earned money on it or not, and I think most would agree with me on that point. If I knew they were going to be tackling this with the same amount of passion and (most importantly) *_RESPECT FOR TOLKIENS WORK,_* that they had with the original trilogy (despite some acceptable deviations), I could just buy blindly and not let myself get spoiled of any scenes by a potentially spoilerous trailer.

I know this probably wont happen because of the Amazon show. But imagine if they did their own Second Age Trilogy. Eregion, the forging of the rings, Numenor. It could be so fucking good.
The other main thing i would love to see is the War in the North during the Third age. None of the LOTR characters are involved so you dont have the actor issue. But it will be cool to see Erebor and Dale again etc. The battles in Mirkwood/Dul Guldur and Lothlorian would be really cool to see.
They could have a scene of explaining why Galadriel send Haldir and his soldiers to Helms Deep. Have Galadriel look into her mirror right before their own battle and see the future of Helms Deep if they dont come and help them. So she sends a small army of Elves to Rohan right before fighting their own battles.

I don’t think age is going to be too much of an issue, after all practical makeup could be used in tandem with it so it’s not jarring, if they can’t use practical makeup in its entirety for it. After all, Lon Chaney had used makeup to make himself look younger in some of his films.
What I’m interested in seeing with future LotR films is giving Glorfindel proper screen time and actually give him some lines.
Also, a while ago John Rhy-Davies did speak about returning to LotR. He said he will only return to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ franchise if he was allowed to drop the prosthetics and instead use CGI to get into character, which was first utilized for Andy Serkis (Gollum). In an interview with Collider, he said: “Well, I’m known to not want to put that prosthetic on again, but out of deference to Andy, whom I love and admire and again who has grown so much, if they invited me … oh God could I dare to put on that make-up again and lose my skin? Maybe with CGI."
