I think immortals would have a stoicism built in because it is the natural order of things. Flowers have their season, then fade. Seems to me that there would be less attachment to the past with eternity still before me.
I would have to re-read "The Silmarillion", but I think Legolas eventual took ship to the undying lands in the west. Ever since he saw the sea his heart pulled him that way. After touring the world with Gimli they both went to Valinor.
Yup, they built a ship once Gimli became venerable and sailed to the undying lands. Gimli was the only Dwarf admitted.

and he sailed after merely 120 years of Aragorn's reign and then death, so this was nothing for an elf - by elvish reckoning Legolas basically sailed staight away

I know Tolkien hated allegory, but this is the retired soldier’s song throughout time. I think it was his way of processing what he saw old soldiers going through all around him. This is a romanticized version of my grandfather’s story, and his father’s before him. Now I am watching my retired brother travel, tend the farm and serve communities rebuilding from disasters, all while knowing he will leave it all for an unknown place one day when all is well and his need to balance his deeds has faded from necessity.
I felt so much better after listening and watching this…2025 is starting off so horribly… this is peaceful

My grandfather, his father, and now my brother picked up the shovel when they laid down their weapons. They each also became a gardener of men. A bit of travel wore the grime of war off their souls over time. They each found ways to rebuild and heal society in their own ways. This is a very human story, beautifully woven.

You made a mistake, which was probably just the video equivalent of a typo. You ascribed this quote to Legolas when, in fact, it was Gimli who said it about Galadriel as the fellowship was leaving Lothlorien, floating down the river: "I have taken my worst wound at this parting, having looked my last upon that which is fairest." You can either change it or leave it in. Personally, I'd change it, but I'm a little OCD.
