Despite living in the US for 22 years I still drive a manual car. I have zero interest in an automatic bike, whatever technology they use. Bikes are visceral machines that involve the operator, not just a means of getting from A to B. If I wanted twist and go I would have a scooter instead of a Ducati.

I don't personally want an automatic motorcycle either, but I'm absolutely excited for options. There are so many people with so many different situations so if that tech brings the capability to ride to more people then I'm all for it. It's just like a trike: would I want one? Nah, but there are people that wouldn't be able to ride otherwise. So I'm all for options that allow people that wouldn't have been able to ride otherwise, the chance to do so.

But I also have a DCT and I can attest, it’s far from automatic - you have to learn how to use it, where to use it and when to override and shift with the pointer finger and thumb. Your Ducati V2 information is a month out of date. Ducati themselves stated that they’re making a NEW V2 engine specifically to replace the current V2. I would hate for the 937 Testastretta to go in to a true sport bike. The 937 is outdated and a workhorse engine. Not a racehorse engine. Wouldn’t feel right in a narrowly focused sport bike. If you want the 937 engine in ‘sport bike’ form, buy the current Super Sport.

    • @RaidenF8

I ride a monster 937 and I have to say that the 937 is a fantastic engine both for the street and also the track. The SS uses a much older frame, and is heavier. A 937 sports bike with the latest Panigale chassis would be a banger.

I’m a manual man myself. Once you’ve put in the time and effort to perfect your shifting and iron out all your mistakes and bad habits, it all becomes ‘automatic’ anyway. But, I also know that more automatic bikes would be great for new riders and therefore great for the industry.

Digital TFT clocks on retro bikes...noooooooooo dont do it Triumph/Enfield! The Enfield Scrambler and Triumph Speed Twin could be great but I really hope they don't waste time and money on TFT displays, the Speed Twin 1200 has beautiful analogue clocks that could surely be adapted to facilitate rider modes etc and be fitted across the ST range. TFT displays are insanely expensive to replace if they go wrong, are getting nicked off of bikes and thus an added security issue (as if bikers need any more of those) and are shite for the planet (lithium), they probably have their place but it aint on retro bikes and I wish manufacturers would stop chucking them on every new bike they release...

Having ridden for 45 years, mainly on large capacity sports bikes, I see no real need for automatic geared bikes.
I used to think exactly the same about cars. However, the Tiptronic auto in my car is so smooth and fast, particularly in sport mode, that I rarely ever revert to the manual option now.
Also, thinking back to a track day I did last week on my 848, I'm sure I would lap quicker with a well set up automatic. Another time it would be useful, is in busy urban situations, when you are forever up and down the low gears. Where is the fun in that!

Can’t believe Triumph have done away with analogue clocks Rob on the Speed Twin, these are supposed to be retros and the new clocks look rubbish in comparison to the twin clocks, shame, with Thruxton ending I think that leaves just the Kwak Z900RS, R12 9T and T120 holding up the flag for proper classic retro standards. 🤔 😞

Apart from its name, isn't the new Speed/Scrambler X 400 the modern day equivalent of a Tiger Cub? They did explore selling a 250 single a few years ago (up to 2014), but then shelved it before going into production.

@@paulketchupwitheverything767 Comlpetely agree. I had a test ride on a Speed 400 and liked it. "This is a 21st century Tiger Cub" I said to myself. There's a bigger problem though; I put a deposit on a new one and got fed up waiting for it. Two Kawasaki test rides later I bought an Eliminator SE, which I collected just a few days later. I'm loving it. Unless Triumph can sort their supply problems out, I guess this will be happening a lot.

It is good that people have a choice. However, I do own an electric bicycle and an electric car, but all my motorbikes have petrol engines, gear boxes, and clutches. One of the many joys of riding motorbikes is the soundtrack when shifting down and the back wheel struggling for grip. Anything else would be like watching a film with no background music.

I’m open minded on automatic …. But… having spent the last 3 summers in the alps I prefer to have a clutch for those tight hairpin moments because I reckon you’d use the back brake more on an automatic but there are times when you want / need to get two feet down. Let’s see what the experts say but then again it’s us ordinary folk that will be riding them. For me, the feel of the gear shift is an integral part of the motorcycle experience.
