Our cover band plays this and there are few times where we really nail it, but when you do it sounds great. The guitar opens the tune and sets the tempo and if you start too fast it becomes infinitely more difficult to play. I knew I would be playing some of these parts wrong, but was actually surprised at how much was right.
Thanks for this vid, we are playing this tomorrow and I am definitely going to put this to use today to nail some of these parts, I already picked up the guit and tuned to your tuning. Very much appreciated.

That was awesome and brought back a lot of memories. I loved the original lineup of that band when I was a kid. I played this tune in a cover band on the road back in the early 80's. I found the "alien spaceship" sound accidentally. I went into the backline "danger zone" with an Electric Mistress, OD and Echoplex engaged for traditional feedback during the "psychedelic" section of this tune. Due to the stage setup that night, my guitar got much closer to the heads than normal and those weird, alien, feedback-ish sounds started swirling around. It turned out to be the output transformer's windings in my heads interacting with my guitar's pickup. I could manipulate the pitch slightly and it was identical to those sounds in the original recording. Everyone in the band freaked and I got to play it off like I knew exactly what I was doing.

I was watching a TH-cam clip on the 1978 "Cal Jam II" outdoor show and the Heart segment has a pretty good rendition of their Barracuda tune. The sound quality is not very good, but it does capture the essence of that number. And BOY, as an aside, i forgot just how absolutely BEEEEUTIFUL the Heart girls were. That Ann Wilson can just belt out the most fabulous vocals, and the thing is, many years later she still sounds pretty much the same. What a great band they were.

Hey Tom, As I get older, I am struck at how many of the tunes that are just burned into our psyche were so innovative. We take so much for granted that those pioneers invented. I could not think of another tune prior to this one where those harmonics were used to musically and prominently... then not long after everybody and their uncle was using them like EVH diving with those whammys... or even the gallop itself... there were not many tunes doing that... then it is about 2/3 of Iron Maiden's catalog. Very cool to get to eavesdrop on you deconstructing this... made me appreciate it more. Side note, my brother owned a bass owned by the player on the original tune. Take care.
