My good friend Bob Ressler and I grew up learning to play music, he on electric guitar and me on drums. He was a few years older than me and had his own place with his fiancée. I used to skip school and go to his place to smoke weed, listen to music and jam for hours on end. He introduced me to The James Gang Rides Again back around 1988-89. That was when I discovered Joe Walsh. I’d heard him on the radio before, but never like it was on that album. Joe’s playing is just stunning. I used to listen to The Bomber and Woman over and over and over. It was fascinating to me, still is. Bob could play like that at 19-20 years old. He could play Billy Gibbons guitar stuff like it was something he’d been doing forever. It was absolutely incredible. We lost Bob to cancer in May of 2022, which is something I still struggle with. Bob remains the most naturally gifted guitar player I’ve ever met or played with, even after 35 years doing live gigs with dozens of players. When I hear Joe on tunes like Those Shoes, Pretty Maids All In A Row, Life’s Been Good, Funk #49, The Bomber and Woman, I remember those long days jamming in his basement, just the two of us, letting the music flow in and around and through and out of us, doing our best to develop this thing, this instinct, this unsolicited love and passion for playing these instruments and entertaining others as well as ourselves. I miss my friend. I can thank Joe Walsh for being an unwitting cornerstone of my personal history. Thank you for taking the time to conduct and share this interview. As an aside I’ll mention that I’m a recovering alcoholic with nearly seven wonderful years of sobriety on my card. Because there are so many of us who know what that’s all about I’ll offer this salutation; Take It Easy, One Day At A Time, and Easy Does It. 👍
I am sure that Tom has tough times and challenges, disappointments and pain in his life, but every time I watch and hear him talk about playing and his fellow players, heros and guitars and gear he just seems like the most happy, carefree, lighthearted, joyful spirit you'd ever meet.
I saw Joe at Blossom when I was a teenager, some 40 years ago. They introduced him as a contest winner and he came running from the lawn down the aisles onto the stage. He was always one of us. And that was a tremendous show, before the Eagles. His solo stuff is massively underrated.
I always thought Joe was taking a step DOWN when he joined the Eagles. And I also think that at THAT time in his life, when partying was one of his main raisons d'etre, that Joe was happy to let Irv, Glenn and Don handle the talking and speaking in the "meet n greets" and other PR stuff that's a big part of being a Rock star, and which Joe considered to be a pain in the ass and an obstacle to his partying. I was a big fan of pre-Eagles Joe, and I thought that he really joined the Eagles to round out their softball team, for playing with the "Rolling Stone" magazine staff. I think of Joe now as "Analog man" rather than a recovering addict/alcoholic. I've also always liked him for going to US Military Recreation Centers and jamming with the soldiers there, a REAL ordinary average guy.
I was in a daze boarding my umpteenth plane at DFW in the early 2000's. Turned the corner to First Class and there's Joe Walsh staring at me. I got the bug eyes thinking "Holy Sh*t That's Joe Walsh" As soon as he saw that I got the huge Joe Walsh smile. I smiled back even bigger. I kept walking because nothing could top that moment and I wanted him to have his privacy....I was a fan before even bigger fan after. What a great guy. 😃
One winter morning way back in the day up on Sugarloaf Road in the mountains west of Boulder CO there was a knock-knock on the front door. I opened the door and sh*t howdy it was Joe Walsh. He'd run his Mercedes off the road into a ditch in front of my house. He looked good naturedly tipsy. He looked like he'd been at a party all night where it was too hard leave because he couldn't find the door. He politely asked if I would help him get the car out of the ditch. Heck yeah I'd help him get it out of the dtich. I grabbed a shovel and I dug all the snow out from around the car and under the car and then I dug a path back up the road. Joe got into the car put it back and forth in drive and reverse while i pushed on the car. He was actually having a yeehaw good ol' time and we were both slipping and sliding in the mucky snow. Finally, the car popped loose and made it back up on Sugarloaf Road. Joe shook my hand and said "Thanks." He got into the Mercedes and continued motoring down Sugarload Road towards Boulder.
I was 13 my friend across the street Billy Morse says here smoke this and listen to this new tune by Joe Walsh it was Rocky Mountain Way ... I was like Wow this is the Greatest song Ever !!!
Man, major coup for the channel getting Uncle Larry! Worlds colliding...in a great way! Two of my favorite tubers! Buk has got to be full of great stories.
Otis, Tom, Joe...doesn't get better than this. Met Tom after his gig in Beverly MA with Ann Wilson, I went just to see him. Got kicked out of the venue after the show by an overzealous old female usher even though the crew chief said Tom would be out to say hi. As I was leaving the parking lot I saw some folks in the shadows by the stage door including a tall guy. I yelled "Uncle Larry?'" He held up his arms and yelled back "Hey!" Went over, bro hugs all around and it was like we knew each other our whole lives. He hung out with a few of us for a good 40 minutes shooting the shit while he sipped his beer talking about guitars, music, and life. Nicest and most humble musician I've ever met.
I saw Joe Walsh in the 90s at a music festival opening for the Allman Brothers. He was hammered and frankly pretty terrible. Then I saw him open for Tom Petty on the final tour and he absolutely blew me away. His tone and playing and especially his voice just seemed larger than life. I believe he was playing through 2 tweed Bassmans and it just sounded so massive. Really glad I got the chance to see him again.
Yeah! I never heard anyone describe playing rhythm as "making a nice bed for the lead to play over" and it is really a great analogy! Joe is the reason I picked up the guitar back in 1979-80. I have a bunch of other dudes that inspired me, but it all began with Joe. There is a story behind it but you won`t really find it very interesting, so I will spare you the details.
Uncle Larry saved me during the covid pandemic, and I'm grateful to have discovered him. Plenty of time to dig into his videos and then his music. He got me thinking about playing in ways that were very new to me. He also rekindled my love of good ol' rock 'n roll. I'm glad that he seems to be energized by the whole Homeskoolin' internet experience. I certainly am.
In the 60sJoe Walsh played with the James Gang at the Mentor Hullabaloo in Ohio where we would go to dance on weekends. No alcohol no refreshments. Just great music and dancing.

Uncle Larry! This man taught me how to properly bend a string and much much more. Not only that, but Homeskoolin' made the lockdowns a little more bearable. Unc is one of the coolest to ever do it.
Joe is by far my favorite guitarist, musician and personality that has ever inspired me. Thank you for this! Great stories, Tom. You're doin things right!
Joe is THE reason I began playing back in 1979-80. There is a story behind it, but I won`t bother you with it. There are, of course other players that are big influences` on me but Joe was IT. Still is too. The songs, the riffs, the tone, the music that comes from his soul, and it is released by his hands and his wacky faces while pulling off some tasty and unique Joe riffs. The man is respected and loved by every one of his peers. Musicians love to play with him on stage. Some of the footage I have seen goes back to 1975, with a couple Eagles, and so many others. It is a revolving door and dudes with time off during tours sit in for a couple nights. Same kinda like Ringo`s all star jams, which Joe is always a part of. They are brothers in law too.
I'm one of those nutty fans I'm 70 and have been this way for over 40 years. Joe is generous I've seen him play live in Sydney several times and I've never been disappointed. Joe is so cool just recently I learned that he shops at my local vintage guitar shop (Guitar Jungle)when he's working in Australia.
Love your channel man! I could listen to you and these dudes forever. I was playing an expensive Martin D28 Brazilian Rosewood guitar (which I traded 3 other Martins and Gibson banjo for) in Hank's Guitar in Denmark street London. There was only me and the fella behind the counter in the shop, when the door opened and Joe Walsh walked in. He was looking for an amp for a gig in London that night. I chatted to him for a while, and told him that I was a big fan of his work. He was really chilled and very easy going. Right place, right time! - It was the Eagles that first got me into songwriting and harmony singing. Gavin
This is awesome. I worked on the stage crew at Carowinds Paladium and got to run a follow spotlight on Joe Walsh. I was a rookie. Great show. Buko is cool.
When Joe Vitale corrects Joe Walsh about playing the Strat on "Funk 49" instead of the starry Tele, -- the first time I watched this I laughed for days!. I still laugh out loud when I re-watch. Thank you Tom and Otis!
We get to hear Joe Walsh stories from Uncle Larry Bukovac?! Good stuff, man, good stuff. Those are two of my favorite musicians on the planet. My head just about exploded when I read the title of this video. 😂
Thanks Otis!! I'm sure Uncle Larry is going to send everyone over here too!! We just love Tommy! I remember Joe saying one time, when your on tour with me never play the song the same way twice. Just make sure I'm going to like what you play!! LOLOL That has been in the back of my mind at every gig I've played since. I never played with Joe, but he taught me so much. Just like Buko!! Great stuff!! --gary
@@gteefxr3094 Nobody ever asked me that before. I can't tell if your serious or just a troll. It's a long laugh out loud. I'm 71 and maybe I don't always get things right, I just do the best I can. Peace.. --gary
Wow that was some cool info. I seen the original James Gang very early 70's. You are right how he draws the audience to him. It was almost as though no body was on stage but him. Was a fantastic show.
Saw Joe Walsh 4 times, from James Gang through to the Eagles, for a very good reason…. The guy is an incredible singer and player. Absolutely love the guy.
Like a lot of commenters, just here to say again that I'm subscribed to both of y'all's channels, and this was really great. Tom is hilarious, and Otis' dry wit is a good foil. You've both made my day. Thanks!
Uncle Otis & Tom, this is what the internet is for watching music enthusiast 's like this in Australia what a joy. Thanks for both of you. And people waste their precious time arguing with bots on Twitter !
OTIS, love ya and the INTERVIEWS and history, old Joe with the James Gang was my first albums I listen to at 16yrs old was amazing and the first few Walsh albums that those long songs and camping up at the KERN RIVER were memories I will never forget . If folks knew how great his composed songs are besides the commercial hits of his , they would be amazed. He seems to be a little burnt out from the dark days . Walsh never got credit from his earlier work , maybe because they were long instrumentals, but they are the best.
Great stories Tom ,thanks Otis for doing that interview. I'm a guitar player going on 55 yrs. And had a chance to roads for Motley crew back in the day.Great fun and a lot of memories. Great White opened for my band back in 85 ,we had a blast. I remember when Van Halen was the house band at a local club .There were playing pretty much their songs on their first two albums before they even recorded them .. Great show boys.
The Eagles we’re getting serious airplay when I was young. I’ve only seen Joe Walsh once (opening for Tom Petty ATHB). I enjoyed his playing and what he said to the crowd. Really enjoyed this video! Makes me want to listen to Joe Walsh more!
I recently had front row seats for the Eagles a few weeks ago. Yes, the crowd cheered for Joe longer and louder than for anyone else. Unfortunately, Joe was lost up there. They had a teleprompter set up just for him and he was still messing up the words. Playing so many wrong chords he eventually stopped hitting the strings. There was a lead part for Joe and he slowly walked over to Vince Gill and asked him to take over. Vince nodded at him and began playing Joe's part. The band was quite upset. I could see it in their eyes. I don't know if he'll be back up there again. All of that being said, it was still cool seeing him.
Great video, boys! I'm from Cleveland, too. My parents saw Joe play back in late 60s. My dad always talked about Joe and the famous (RIP) Glenn Schwartz.
Right On! Joe & Glenn are both well worth talking about. I use to go Major Hooples almost every Thursday night & listen to Glenn Schwartz jam. It was the only gig he played at for years, great jams & memories there no doubt! ++Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul++
With all the BS going on in the world of music now a days, this gives me everything and Hope 🙏.. THIS IS THE REAL SHIT .. Joe Walsh is up there with Everyone and Anyone as a Musician, Songwriter, and Artist , The Real Deal he is . I hear you on ALL of that! I bought the James Gang album "Thirds" and was back for two more later on that week. I love Joe! Hearing some more of Uncle Larry's tour experience with Walsh was pure gold!
Hey Otis! yeah! Hi Tom! I love this! FYI: I met Joe at The Mint (LA, CA) when his daughter was singing a show c.2010? 💗 I was gonna drive 10 min back to my apt (Melrose & LaBrea) to get my So What vinyl for Joe to sign (I got it when I was 11 or 12! (On My 20 Desert Island Discs) I played at The Mint club lots during the '90's-2010's? Fun & Epic times.
He’s right. Joe Walsh stole the show every time. Didn’t matter who he was playing with or who was playing with him. It just the way it was . You can’t tame greatness!!
I've been following Tom since I got back into playing 2 years ago..one of the finest players and people you will ever meet from what I can see. Incredibly talented player and just a cool cat to listen to tell stories..he has many and really enjoy his channel 🤘😁🎸the homeskoolin lockdown sessions were so much fun 😊
These are the kinds of stories I live for. EXCELLENT! I know what I'll be doing the rest of the day. Huge Joe Walsh and Joe Vitale fan. Waddy Wachtel is legendary. I remember seeing the Eagles during the "Hell Freezes Over Tour" and when Joe stepped up to do his spotlight segment we all went COMPLETELY NUTS! It was the most noise the audience made all night. Yep, we Joe Walsh fans are rabid. Hardly an "Ordinary Average Guy". But he seemed so accessible. Exceptional show!
Joe has that relationship with his fans, in part, because he's just a decent human being. In 2014-ish, Joe played in the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. At the very beginning of the show, he brought out survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing and just talked about community and overcoming adversity. I was crying at the beginning of a "rock concert" and he hadn't even played a song yet. He raised money for the survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing. And then he rocked the house. It was the most beautiful, wonderful human experience I can recall. God Bless Joe Walsh.
Cannot think about Joe Walsh without remembering Glenn (or Don..?) Being asked about Joe in an interview and he replied, "oh yeah, Joe's a great bunch of guys" 🤪🤣😎🤘
Subscribe to Tom's channel and tell him Otis sent ya. It's one of the best things on the internet.

Thanks for your love and support ♥️❤️♥️
Thanks!
Thanks for your love and support ♥️❤️♥️
JOE IS AN AMAZING PERSON & MUSICIAN .
Love Tom and all great playing and stories he gives us.
I love doing interviews like this. Spent 5 years gathering many interviews from NE Ohio vintage artists and bands.
Thanks for your love and support ♥️❤️♥️
Ever since learning The Edge does that with his Herdim picks, I started doing the same thing… like all the time. It’s magical.
So cool to see the two of you together!! Love to hear these stories.
This was cool. I'm a homeskooler. D- student but present
@@216Numbskull I saw him there as well. Great show!
Two of my FAVORITE uTubers..!!

I hear you on ALL of that! I bought the James Gang album "Thirds" and was back for two more later on that week. I love Joe! Hearing some more of Uncle Larry's tour experience with Walsh was pure gold!
Wow,your comments are the perfect companion to this video! Just pure Love Hysteria! I feel it and am totally with you!🔥
Hey Otis! yeah!
This was a INCREDIBLE interview with TB!
Joe Walsh is a National Treasure, and so are you Uncle Larry!!
Another really really Goode one..thank you..another barn burner..!!
Tom's favorite blues guy is a friend of mine. Both super nice people
Wow🎸《☆》Tom's Cool👍🏾🥤If only Highschool teachers could relay information to their students like this Everyone would pass✌😎☮
Great interview! Whew. Such wisdom from Buk on playing behind Joe Walsh. Uncle Larry, you’re the best.
He’s right. Joe Walsh stole the show every time. Didn’t matter who he was playing with or who was playing with him. It just the way it was . You can’t tame greatness!!
Cool stories Uncle Larry. I wore out Smoker You Drink Player You Get and still have the old vinyl. Ah the 70s had some great music!
I love this format for Tom! Such a cool cat and fantastic guitar player! I listen to him often but, some how this just clicks in place. Thanks Otis!
This is a great interview. Thanks for this, both of you.
Buk. He is something else. Been watching channel since it started. He is incredible
Kenny Vaughan, now Uncle Larry - Love it. Keep the session aces coming, Otis!
15:17...'You get that feathering....like someone cracked an egg over your head..'. Hilarious. I could listen to him play AND tell stories for hours.
Thank you Otis! Uncle Larry has a great channel!
This was very enjoyable to watch, always loved Joe Walsh’s sound. Best song on the Warriors soundtrack was “In the city”
Otis..! I always thought you were cool.. Now I’m totally convinced.. love ya man ❤️👍🏼
Loved this. Joe Walsh stories are always special to me and this one by Tom is among the best I have seen and heard.

What a great story teller! Laughed so much 😂
Awesome story about a freaking legendary character and performer.
Very cool stories. I’m one of the violent fans!
Thanks for your love and support ♥️❤️♥️
Joe has that relationship with his fans, in part, because he's just a decent human being. In 2014-ish, Joe played in the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. At the very beginning of the show, he brought out survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing and just talked about community and overcoming adversity. I was crying at the beginning of a "rock concert" and he hadn't even played a song yet. He raised money for the survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing. And then he rocked the house. It was the most beautiful, wonderful human experience I can recall. God Bless Joe Walsh.
I can sit here and listen to Uncle Larry all day long
Right on. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome interview...would love to hang with this guy with some beers and hear more.
"Fuck it man! We're in the same band!" that is awesome!
Cannot think about Joe Walsh without remembering Glenn (or Don..?) Being asked about Joe in an interview and he replied, "oh yeah, Joe's a great bunch of guys" 🤪🤣😎🤘
Such a great interview! Uncle Larry is one of the most talented and humble guys to ever pick up a guitar, thanks for posting this!
Uncle Larry is the best! Great stories!
