    Which lens do you think looks the best? I'm loving the 7Artisans and full frame anamorphic 🔥

    Loved the video Isaac, such a good watch and the comparison was super detailed. You’ve actually convinced me out of buying a Helios because I’m just not sure I’d use it that often… but the 7Artisans lens looked great for the price!

    I'll go for the cheapest Sony 50mm f/1.8 for AF... I'm playing with Nikon DSLR lenses on Sony body, and I find out MF, close up shots especially, on people is the most challenging. The hit rate I got was too low. The MF only setup reminds me the good old days with 5D Mark II when shooting video. it was not the camera that hunting for focus, it was me

    • @Isaac_Insoll
      @Isaac_Insoll  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yea, I remember when 5Dii came out, those were the good old days!
      Yep, for most stuff I shoot im using AF so I’d definitely go with that unless you are specifically looking for anamorphic character or something that the AF lenses don’t provide.
      Some of my friends still shoot manual focus but I trust the AF more than I trust myself 😂

    Nice video, but saying helios footage is useless don't makes sense for a lens you put on for the way it looks and act.

    • @Isaac_Insoll
      @Isaac_Insoll  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right. By “useless” I meant “useless to me as 50mm 1.8 still gives a decent look and adds AF or Spectrum 50mm gives enough ‘vintage’ while not wrecking itself with a sun flare in the scene”.
      I’ve seen other videos with beautiful helios footage so it’s possible the copy I used was suboptimal but the spectrum is much nicer to operate and “good enough” for me

      Wow I never know that lens can be this good. Very versatile. I was thinking about what lenses to get for my FX3. I really like Laowa's look but it's not full frame. And then Sirui's squeeze changes at different focal lens. Can't decide what to use. Any suggestions?@@Isaac_Insoll

    • @Isaac_Insoll
      @Isaac_Insoll  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’d go 24-105 as first lens. Then a 35mm 1.8 for second lens as it’s a great all purpose lens. After those then decide if you want anamorphic/macro/telephoto etc.
      you can always add a mist filter if you want them to look more “cine”

    If you knock the Helios down just one or two clicks on aperture it'll help significantly with flaring and sharpness without taking away too much of the character.

      @Isaac_Insoll  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, good to know. It’s actually my friends lens but I shot everything wide open. I’ll give it another try at some stage. I didn’t even think of doing that!

  • @aybee5908

    Funny comparison. In the blind shot, I liked the Helios most. It looked more anamorphic than the Sirui to me 😁. But the flares need to be controled, for sure. My own Helios seems to be not that extreme. I´ve tried out the 7 Artisans. Center sharpness and contrast is good. Breathing is horrable and there is visible fringing. But it`s well built and damn cheap.

    • @Isaac_Insoll
      @Isaac_Insoll  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, having thought about it more since I shot this video... I love the helios rendering, it's truly special, but I couldn't use it knowing that i'm a sunflare away from literally not being able to shoot. And after using the sirui and 7artisans lenses, they are so nice to operate that a non-modified helios just feels so frustrating to operate by comparison.

    Hi, nice video... manual lenses are the same than cinema lenses? can i shoot a picture( not video) with this lens and have tha cine colors? thanks

    • @Isaac_Insoll
      @Isaac_Insoll  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely, you will get the same look out of this lens if you are doing photography or videography (same as every other lens).
      However the main benefits of this lens is the fact that it has the long manual focus throw, geared rings for attaching a follow focus, and all that.
      If you are just wanting a 50mm lens for photography you might be better off getting a different lens that has autofocus and using a diffusion filter to get a slightly softer image. That's what I'd do as I love manual focus for video but for photography I prefer AF.

  • @howardlo7548
    @howardlo7548 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    from what i've heard the 44-2 has three different manufacturers and the quality would differ based on the manufacturer. if the 44-2 lens has a logo with a circle and an arrow going through, that's the later version and the lesser quality built one. If you could get your hands on a KMZ or MMZ built lens, see if it fixes the flares a bit.

    • @Isaac_Insoll
      @Isaac_Insoll  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh sweet, I didn’t actually know about the different versions. I think I’m getting enough flares from the 7artisans lens so I’m just gonna stick with that when I want flares, it seems close enough to vintage flares for my use.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @joee790
      @joee790 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Isaac_Insoll There is a guy on ebay from UKR that is selling the helios lens that's been worked over and he has the KMZ ones for about $180. Also if you stop the lens down just a bit it really controls the flaring. Ironglass also sells these completely rehoused but you have to put an extra zero on the price.
      I really liked that FF anamorphic lens though...
      great video.

    HI,
    Thank you for this very informative review !
    I have an FX6 and I am on the way to purchase a 7 Artisans 35 or 50 Spectrum
    Could you please provide the references of the follow focus you're using with the FX6 ?
    Looks like a Tilta top plate + Smallrig FF, just looking for the exact references to be sure :) ...

    • @Isaac_Insoll
      @Isaac_Insoll  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the SmallRig 3010 and the Tilta top plate is the one that comes with the FX6 v mount kit.
      I've got a FX6 video that might talk about it a bit more.
      I'm personally just touching the lens directly at the moment as it feels better to me than using a follow focus at the moment (just personal preference)

      Seems theses lenses have a good success :)
