"Kaval is playing, my mother, up and down, my mother, kaval is playing, my mother, up and down, up and down in the village, my mother. I will go, my mother to see it, to listen to it. Tip-ti. Tip-ti. If it is a boy from our village I will love him from dawn till noon. If it is a boy from another village I will love him as long as I live."
The composer of this song is Prof. Petar Liondev from Bulgaria. In 1989 The Mystery of Bulgarian voices choir won GRAMMY prize in Los Angeles with this song.
Outstanding !!! "soundcheckdirector" the title should be "kaval sviri" A kaval is a flute, and in this case a shepherd's flute from Bulgaria. A translation of the song is something like this:
@LAkaval, the original title of the song is "Kafal sviri"; kafal was the dialect form of "kaval" in the original song Petar Lyondev used for inspiration.
those lyrics come from time when the parents used to chose the future husband or wife of their child, so may be in this song a girl is sharing her desire to choose her husband by herself. But of course whatever she wanted to say, she should have done in a way so not to offend her parents, and that is why it is not said directly, but rather with a little bit of humor.
Bravi. Just stunning. Is your high school in Bulgaria? Great singing and stupendous director of courage and insight. I expected little and am blown away. Hugs for everyone.
Ironically I went to this high school and I was just looking for different versions of the song and this literally just popped up. The school is in Aurora Illinois in the US
Everything was exceptionally beautiful ... except the very last chord, when they dissolved to a minor, instead of a major chord, Why hasn´t anyone noticed this before?
Based on this, but different language and mostly gibberish. This is far superior I think, although I will always have a soft spot for the Xena version.
that's how i first heard it, and then 15 years later i'm checking out bulgarian womens choirs (thanks to KEXP concerts on here), and eventually came across this tune. was like....wait, wasn't this a blue knights song back in the day? full circle.
The reason why it sounds nasally is because that’s how they sing in some place in Africa, they are representing the African singers. This is a really good song to me 🤷♀️😊

Old european knowledge at its best.
I sang this a few years ago in choir and this is one of those songs that just grows on a person... I missed this song!
I am Bulgarian, and I am absolutely amazed at how well they sung the song. :) many compliments!!

Great job!
My choir gets to sing this for UIL this year. Wish us luck!
Beautiful!!!! Thanks for posting
The bright voice is encouraged in you group. Good work!
In the sheet music, it is a minor chord at the end.
Right, and it's not the only mistake they made in this video.
I know it's not what's written but I like the dissonance in this performance, I still like the regular one as well
@CAkaval ... the original song's title is with F :)
This is amazing! Reminds me of Xena Warrior Princess lol! Beautiful!
xena is inspired by bulgarian folk music
Very good job!

wonderfullllllllll
Amazing song
@RachandRams This music is credited by Joseph LoDuca for inspiring the Xena theme
That's because the theme was a reimagining of certain parts of this song.
Wow 🤩
Does anyone know if theres anywhere u can download this in good quality?
SLAVA from Polska

Kaval, not "Kafal" - it is an instrument
Write Кавал in google for images ;)

@@didoidol This is just what I was told. I don't speak Bulgarian myself.
@@TheFounderUtopia I'm Bulgarian mate, I didn't mean to offend you. Im just saying.
@@didoidol I'm not offended. I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Xena
Добър опит, професионално, но липсва душата. Всеедно американци да изпеят химна на България. Няма тръпка, не ме хваща.
Started off okay but quickly became one of the worst performances of this song I've heard. Sad.
i don't know what you're hearing, sounds pretty damn good to me.
