It can charge at 80 kW, the 50 kW info is just given because many of the exisitng chargers are 50kW. Around 35 mins from 10% to 80% on 80 kW DC supply.
@@maximilianholland I was just about to mention this, to be fair to Robert and his researchers MG don't promote this as they know the vast majority of UK rapid chargers are 50kW.
@Ian G Yeah, NA needs long ranges as you tend to drive further than we do in the UK/EU. This would be fine for me as a daily even with my 130mile round trip. Its why Tesla got it right with their supercharger network and long range cars, they just need to make a cheaper EV. Not everyone wants an iPod on wheels that can drive itself, most just want a car that goes from A to B and is an EV.
This standard run of the mill car is just what the EV revolution needs. I love Tesla cars but for the revolution to really take off it needs car manufacturers producing run of the mill cars that are cheap, practical and yet still have all the advantages of an EV over ICE.
@@shaungilmartin1505 Not really Shaun. When you are actually filling up nightly at home the charging network becomes less of an issue. It depends on your driving habits but I haven't needed to go near a charging station in a few weeks of owning an electric and there's a really question about the economic viability of charging stations for me. Petrol needs to be transported on the road, stored in tanks and metered out through special pumps with a lot of safety measures given you are storing an explosive, highly toxic liquid. Fast chargers require a large economic outlay in order to get the amount of current to a location ( way beyond anything normal ) with car owners only occasionally needing your service. I have a "fueling station" at home and I am not sure of the economics of petrol stations switching to EV recharging stations. It's much more likely to make sense as an ancillary service in places where people are stopping for other reasons and on major arteries. I would see a lot more likelihood of councils putting regular charging stations on streets that already have standard voltage cabling in the ground and we do see supermarkets putting in charging. I live in the US and we are behind on this but they have put in DC Fast Charging in my local Walmart. There is a lot of expensive plant there, a very large transformer, and I could see myself going there the night before a planned long trip to take my battery up to 85% and top up at the house overnight. I just learned that the recommendation is to not recharge to 100% nightly so I will typically only have 50 to 150 miles range ( 238 mile Chevy Bolt ) in the batteries. I think the requirement to outfit any new housing with charging point needs to be in the code - be that apartments or actual houses. In 10 years, everything sold will he plugin hybrid or pure EV.
@@shaungilmartin1505 having driven an i3 for 6 years and a Model X for 2 days of pretty long trips, I totally get why the supercharger network is SO good. But it hasn’t made me buy a Tesla yet.
Finally, an ev for people that aren’t particularly passionate about cars, but are passionate about the environment. Because of the price, this car will really appeal to a lot of people. It doesn’t appeal to me- I don’t need an estate- but I can’t help feeling that this car is really good news.
If you're passionate about the environment, don't buy a car. EVs aren't good for the environment; they are just somewhat better than ice cars. Get a bike. You'll feel better for it.
@@bugsygoo Live in Scotland commute around 80 miles a day sometimes more currently a lot less. Don't be a plonker with your answers people are trying to be environmentally friendly and you're just trolling.
My passion for cars ate gone. Those nice to drive I can't afford anyway and these days you're spending more time in traffic and riding. So this one should do the trick, just waiting for a kia cee'd EV. The MG has a nicer interior ( gearshifter is 😱 in the kia). Those things start to matter, digital dash , nice gearshifter and a decent charging rate , hoping for 100DC ). Range is less important than but suits for me like it is now. 50kWh is more thanks ppl need anyway commuting.
I've had the MG ZS EV for 6 months - does what it says on the tin and we're delighted with it. The MG5 has auto climate control which is missing on the ZS. But the ZS has adaptive cruise control which I believe the MG5 doesn't have. Generally I think the MG5 will do very well in the UK, especially with taxi drivers. The obsession with SUVs is often down to liking the higher driving position, but outside of that the MG5 would make a great family car and great for dog owners, of whom there are a lot in the UK!
I've had an MG ZS EV since March 20 - I absolutely love it (so does the wife and she 'doesn't do cars') - it's just had the software upgrade (for free) and all the annoying bongs and horn papping has gone. I looked at one of these in the dealers while my ZS was in for the upgrade - it's a really nice looking car. I'm looking forward to seeing the battery version of the HS when that comes out - it may be my next after the ZS in a couple of years.
As a German i find it kind of funny that british cars (talking britisch layland) are the worst but britsh car reviews are the best. Love it! The music, the enthusiasm, the humor. Just great.
Big fan of fullycharged, but would love to see some more standard car review elements. Like: What's it like to sit in the rear? What other trim levels can you get? When will it be available? Maybe put a suitcase in the boot to show how big it actually is. etc.
This seems like an EV version of an old Mondeo or Vectra Estate, which I see as a good thing. There are very good reasons as to why those cars were successful in the market for so many years.
@@MrGonzonator it'd be good then if they did a version with a raised good to make an old-school people carrier (as opposed to the ones that are almost an SUV)
It works because it's not fancy or full of things that cost a bomb to replace if broke, the Mondeo/Vectras are work horses that could take a battering and still look the same, and you're right this has that 'beat me up a bit I don't' mind look about it. Also when it ages and the price drops, it's the right size to rip it's guts out to use in a classic car for the right price, as a current EV kit is around 22k.
@@FirstDriveReviews Nice dogs. I've written off the small cars as we have a Ridgeback & Beagle. The MG5 is closest so far - I absolutely loath the SUV crossover junk - unless Nissan EV'd a Pathfinder (loved having one).
The electric car I've been waiting for for 6 years! They should sell a lot because this is the car most people need, but people will continue to buy bloody SUVs
@@Suraj-ci9vu well, they're big, too big for many roads, and the excess materials make them more expensive and a larger impact on the environment. They're less aerodynamic than a car so are less economical. The point of original SUV, something like a Range Rover was to offroad. Nobody offroads in a modern SUV. There is no more room in an SUV than the equivalent car. So to me they represent a massive waste of resources for little to no gain on the part of the purchaser.
@@rushja I agree - aside from popularity I think the legacy manufacturers have made electric SUVs first because it's much easier to fit batteries in without compromising legroom. Companies like Tesla, Nissan, and Renault went straight for saloons and hatchbacks because they had a clean sheet to start from.
Funny to watch this 3 years on, im now looking at 3 years old mg5 and instead of £30k they are £10k and now have nearly 100k miles on them. Thanks for introducing us to them :)
Got an Uber (Ola) yesterday and the guy was driving one of these. I was seriously impressed. No rattles or squeaks and very fast/tourquey. Guys! I've noticed it before, and you're doing it again: You got the conversion from Wh/mile to Wh/km the wrong way! You need to divide the first number by 1.6, not multiply it! So the real consumption of this car would be about 172 Wh/km.
You beat me to it. It seems rather obvious that since km is a smaller unit than mi the Wh per unit has to also be smaller. 443 Wh/km would be astoundingly bad!
Thanks, saw the number come up which was double my Tesla and thought that could not be right. 172 per km makes far more sense and is good (my S does 190-210 driving like Robert)

When you say MG ZE, I guess you mean MG ZS EV, right?
That is why I like you so Much because you are a true journalist without any preconceptions. Chinese are slowly getting better and better at building things. Thank you.
Chinese can and are building anything you want but remember to the specs we are giving them so you want cheap you get cheap you want quality you will get but many people want garbage and yes....
Getting better? For decades millions of products & gadgets have been manufactured in China....Volvo for the last 10 years are Chinese owned, IBM sold its hardware to Lenovo decades ago as well....
pretty impressive how fast they go, the only thing that bother me is for an estate not having a "flat floor" is a no no they could ave done much better if the seats get right up to the front seats and the back rest go flat i ave had that in toyota.
"That's all. We don't have time for anything else". How about taking a few seconds to get in the back? How much knee room/headroom in the rear seats? Is the car wide enough for 3 rear passengers? How about the steering - is it sharp and responsive or vague? Does it have adaptive cruise control? Automatic braking? How many different trims are there? Is the sound insulation any good at motorway speed? You've also told me nothing about the suspension.
Yes. This a first drive as the title says. On initial launch manufacturers don't always give the reviewers much time. I'm sure there will be more videos comming on the car.
Exactly. Ordinary is far better than something like a Renault Zoe or that abomination that is the Mini electric, with the worst alloys of any car ever. Besides, Hyundai and Kia are doing perfectly well churning out ordinary cars and ordinary cars are fine when traveling along in rush hour traffic.
@@cadhlaohanlon4443 The front looks like a mix between the VW Arteon and Golf 5 and the back is somewhat similar to an E-class. The side is almost identical to a second gen Hyundai i30 CW
Swapped my Model 3 for a ZSEV and never looked back. The 5 is a great proposition, and will become even more appealing once its facelifted and Pilot is added. I’ll certainly be first in line for the bigger battery ZS. Ps. The infotainment isn’t an issue as we all use CarPlay anyway, which is excellent on this car.
Very much so - an estate ought to be a load lugger. I have an old Rover 75 Tourer, I can easely put two quite expensive Moulton bicycles in the back (I don't want to hang them off the back or put them on the roof!) I'm interested in the MG 5EV, but will have to take the bikes with me to the dealer and test. If they don't fit I can't buy it.
Yeah that’s pretty important for an estate. It’s hard enough to lift heavy stuff over a ridge in a small hatchback. Craning yourself into the deep end of the back of an estate trying to lift something will kill your back, LOL.
I’ve had one of these for 3 weeks. You know what? It’s lovely. Very nice soft suspension, steering a bit light but at 65 I’m not Lewis Hamilton! It doesn’t matter. It isn’t the prettiest car I’ve ever owned but the build quality looks to be really good and it has fantastic 200 mile range. I’m delighted with it.

@@charlesbridgford254 I know that. Don't treat me like a bloody idiot. I wanted an electric car with limited funds. I didn't want to buy a Renault or Peugeot as a) my wife already has a Renault Zoe which is of very average build quality and b) the Peugeot 208e and 2008e weren't designed as EVs and are very expensive for their very limited range. I already have an Huawei phone which is quite easily the best phone I've ever had. I didn't support the moronic Brexit (which is destroying the UK) , as I believe in Freetrade. I will buy what I perceive to be the best deal for me. The MG5 is a great car at a great price. End of.
MG has improved hugely since it became Chinese, ask any old mg owner if they would suggest mg to their friends quality wise, when it was made in the UK. From a former mg owner.
@@davidspencer7254 The MGB is a car that handles very well. Good weight distribution and low c of g. Grip levels dont compare with modern cars, but its still capable of getting down the road without holding anyone up. Its 7 degrees of castor does mean it needs a heave on the wheel to park but it will track through a hurricane and you wont know it until you get out and try to stand up. I know I've done it.
I'm sure it'll find buyers but there's so much more to an estate car (and the need for one) than just "a big boot". There's quite a chunky load lip there, no false floor and seats that don't actually fold flat. Therefore, aside from being bigger perhaps, it is no more flexible than any other electric car. Arguably the ID3, Peugeot e2008 are actually more flexible and practical because they make it easier for people to slide big loads in. No ICE estate car currently on sale has such a basic load area, so this is quite a disappointing area for the MG. Otherwise, it's good that MG have noticed a gap for estate cars which everyone else seems to be falling asleep on. Having said that, the Enyaq and ID4 will give this a run for its money when it comes to practicality, and in the Enyaq's case, maybe even price. Exciting times.
What’s great about this channel is it’s good sensible common driver feedback. The honesty is this vehicle will be appreciated greatly in the U.K. by people who don’t go sideways at every turn or roundabout. The vehicle delivers what they want which is load capacity, range and std equipment levels that they understand from ICE cars. The infotainment centre looks a little poor but overcome that with an apple play or android system connected from the owners phone and it’s pretty well sorted. Love the reviews ! Keep it grounded :)
No, no. Convert the 'subtitle' units to miles per kWh and it's spot on with the commentary and instrument readout. Divide figures into 1000 to get miles or kms per kWh.
Got to love the fact that MG has interiors that very much ape companies like VAG at a time when they are ditching the tried and trusted. Personally, I prefer buttons, switch and knobs to an iPad cockpit. Well done MG.
This is great! this is the sort of thing I thought would’ve been built three or four years ago. I think in a few more years, we’re going to see really quite good cars out of China, absolutely taking over the European market, because they are embracing electric cars fully. Effectively, they will replace the Japanese auto makers, who have refused to change. Thanks, Robert! Nobody else on my feed is doing these videos!
I was an early adopter and I have been driving electric for over 8 years, drove the MG5 last year stylings a bit dated but it's well speceed comfortable to drive and for an affordable family EV it's great
I've been waiting to see you review this - it looks good, and the price is cleverly targeted too. These are the new standard taxi here in Shanghai. Used to be VWs, but now most of the buses and taxis in the city are moving over to BEVs - VW really missed out by being so slow with their own BEVs.
Finally the return of the “estate car”. Practical for a family and also a small business man/woman. Being electric with decent range all a plus. Only draw back for me is the rear seats do not drop down flat to floor and the tail lip is not near to flush with bumper which makes lifting large items over it difficult. Also the roof bars are not EU certificated and are for show and not to be used.I’m sure these issues will be rectified in the future.
Very interesting - the Chinese are showing how it can be done! Oh by the way, got a Kia Niro that comes with a heated steering wheel which I didn’t think I’d use, but actually in the cold weather I would normally wear gloves to drive and that makes operating the touch screen a right faff! So now no gloves, turn on the heated steering wheel - lovely!!
Come to Shanghai you can see loads of GM5 running as taxis for years now. We call them Roewe instead of MG here in China. Glad they are exporting the car to the UK!
Bobby: "... delete that from your prejudice database" Me: Okay ... delete from table prejudice where name = "china manufacturing quality"; commit; 😁 Quite like the looks, especially the back and side view. Seems good value.
The screen is not great but the car comes with Apple Carplay and Andriod Auto which is what you'd probably use anyway. It is not an exciting car but this is a car for the sensible minded. Decent looks, decent range, decent price and very useable thanks to it being an estate. Consider this, for about the same money you could get a Honda E which is cuter and cooler but far less practical.
Always enjoy Robert's reviews, even if he does miss some details about the cars.Hope we get a review of the smaller MG electric cars when they get to the UK.
Saw this yesterday and test drove today....decision to be made, leaving 10yrs of Mercedes to go to MG?? 🤔 thanks for the review, need to park my brand prejudices 😊
Would like to hear you decision. We need a ULEZ for London plus monthly trips to North Wales or Wimborne while feeling relaxed. Carry carbon fibre bicycle inside the car, lots of trips to Screwfix, Toolstation Selco etc. If possible carry 6*4 foot panels or 8*3 foot with front passenger seat down. The PHEV version looks well worth checking out
@@cuebj Hi, I bought one at the end of 2020 and have done 11k miles in it. It is way better than I expected. Smooth drive, good range. The roof rails are only 35kg max inc bars.
After a lot of research (mainly watching Fully Charged videos) I bought one of these (albeit the long range lower-spec model). Absolutely love it. It's not the most advanced car in the world, but the value for money (especially at the time with the Affinity scheme) was amazing. Having 'traditional' heater controls etc was a bit plus point for me. I don't think I'd have liked trying to navigate on-screen menus to change heater settings etc while on the move.
What will be interesting to see is how it fares after a few years (fit, finish, durability) The Chinese car companies are where the Korean one were about 15 years ago, just emerging. However with the EV revolution they do have the opportunity to propel themselves into the mainstream a lot quicker.
This reminds me so much of the Chinese entry of Smartphones in Europe. It won't be long before they totally dominate with extremely high quality for the money.
Cheapest build isn't usually the best quality. Infact when tested several years ago the majority of "quality" Chinese cars scored '0' at the Euro Ncap tests.
@@Antoineforum I've only heard of Huawei. I owed one. It was absolutely terrible but to its credit still works. People will always have taste. Not everyone buys the cheapest things they can.
Love your down to earth ev reviews Robert, but could you show more of the interiors, cup holder size? USB sockets? Wireless charging even storage space / sunglasses holder? Etc etc. Keep up the good work cheers.
To be honest if I wanted that I'd go to Autocar. I like that Bobby focuses on the broader picture of Chinese manufacturers moving into Europe (and succeeding).
Tell please why the heck they still making so looooong bonnet for BEV ? Such thing is impractical isn't? IMO it's hard to see other cars approaching from sideways in the city streets
Good to see an unbiased and objective review on this car, unlike the mainstream automotive press. This looks good value, but if MG could launch an electric MG3 with a 200 mile range, for sub £20k, I think they would sell like hot cakes.
Hi Mr K, I too thought the MG5 would be interesting - couple of criticisms on the car: the rear seats when flat dont provide a flat cargo deck and the range, nearer the Nero should be offered I feel....the main off putting factor for me - min mileage nearer 250 for a 2021 Chinese sourced car should be feasible I love the simplicity and tactile nature of the console controls...but again, given that it comes from China, the screen should be much better executed
rather like the ability to sleep in the back occasionally when out in the wilds and that great hump when seats folded may be a compromise too far.. + personally, O wouldnt consider an EV with less than a 250 min mile range - we have moved on :) 2021 brings much higher expectations in range / £ purchase price
There are a lot of people out there who want a car but couldn't give a monkey's over what it looks like. As long as it gets them and possibly 4 others from A to B and back again and can stack a load in the back, they don't care if it looks 10 or 20 years old. This car has a place in the marketplace and I think many people will be interested.
I absolutely agree, this is a great car, at a great price, which is what the ev market needs. We definitely need more cars like this one. Just for me, the styling doesn’t do it!
Very interesting and enjoyable review..... As mentioned....Chinese quality has leapt up in recent years....mainly because buyers won't tolerate rubbish any more, regardless of how cheap it is.... A wake up call to the immensely conservative Euro/American automotive industry....hide-bound by the internal combustion engine.... And great to be reminded that we have had SUV's rammed down our throats for years now.....IMO the 'estate car' is a much better option for transporting a family, carrying stuff, running a business etc etc..... When the prices come down to realistic levels these are the cars people will want to buy..... And friendly to the environment too.....
You can buy this car right now in exclusive trim for under £23K. If you live in Scotland you can take advantage of the 6-year interest-free loan from the Government, making this car under £320 per month. I don't care what you say about build quality, that's phenomenal value.
@ I'm happy to accept Euro NCAP 5 star rating for the MGZSEV. And not everyone is value focused like me. If they were then brand like BMW, Apple, Beats wouldn't exist. I think you're feeling threatened but there's plenty of room in the marketplace for everyone to have their slice.

Some feedback, you get the wh/mile to wh/km conversion constantly wrong, 257 wh/mile is not 443 wh/km it is 160 wh/km I've seen it in most of your videos, the conversion is simple, just divide the wh/mile number by 1,609 (number of meters in a mile) so the correct number is 257/1,609= 159,7 wh/km. Sidenote: your show is awesome ;)
Just bought an MG ZE because they couldn't get the estate till Feb2021 but loving the ZE because it has more room with the seats down than the MG5 estate
Things I most appreciate about this car, actual buttons not stupid touch pads AND the drive selector isn’t on a stupid pod stuck to the side of the dial binnacle
I would argue about the build quality, it might all seem nice and well built now, but I will wait to see how the car looks like after 100k miles. Then you can talk about build quality.
Question. Can you plug it in to a normal house socket. I get 1 hour of free electric a day which would probably cover my use. Or do you need a special wired in cable?
Not bad at all... Will be advocating your smashing work somewhere un-expected btw. Have been with you for awhile and love your enthusiasm for the new frontier in auto motive.
Heated steering wheels come into their own, for anyone with bad circulation or those with HAVS. The former will have a comfier drive and the latter, will gain some relief from pain while gripping.
As a Canadian EV driver, I'd say that the combination of a heated steering wheel and heated seats give me better winter range and safety because I can drive without thick winter gloves or a movement restricting outer jacket while the car's interior is still chilly, but be comfortably warm, which means that I don't lose as much energy to heating the air outside my car just to keep me warm. Obviously I still need the defogger on at times so I can see, but it's still a significant improvement when it's cold.
3:09 They have always been able to produce quality. A large portion of quality products that we use in our daily lives was manufactured there. This combined with the IP they have "gathered" over the years and a workforce that has to work for pennies (or free in some cases) you will be able to built a quality product for less than the companies you "obtained" the IP from...
This for me is the front edge of the tipping point. Decent range, decent size and genuinely affordable. Now all I need to do is convince management that we should change. Brilliant, and it’s available now, not coming soon in 2023.....

I can't believe you got the metric conversions wrong again!
I like Robert and the videos but I'm fully on your side. Brits seem to expect everybody to speak their language while most of the Brits do not speak a second language, in return they should learn the metric system, especially for the internet! At least in this video they use the the metric speed km/h correct. Last Video was kms!!
An MG without the dash covering coming unglued on the SHOWROOM floor? This is China's greatest contribution to the Marqué. Thanks Mister "L" - another enjoyable AND informative show. My only wish would be for GM to become the official IMPORTER of MGs into "America".
Robert, this is the second car review in a row in which you have gotten the efficiency figure conversions wrong. One mile equals 1.609344 km. So to convert Wh/mi to Wh/km you *divide* Wh/mi by 1.609344 km/mi (You include the units as a check) so in this case that is 275/1.609344 = 170.9 Wh/km. Checking with the units (Wh/mi)/(km/mi)=Wh/km. To get kWh/100 km simply divide Wh/km by 10 (i.e. divide Wh by 1000 to get kWh and multiple km by 100 to get 100 km - i.e 100/1000 = 1/10) which, in this case gives 17.1 kWh/100 km. If this car used 443 Wh/km it would be using 44.3 kWh/100 km and it would not get very far...
Something wrong with the sounds on this video. Speech is low volume and my subwoofer is getting run for the money and windows shaking, still hard to hear the speech.
Looks like another great car from China. It really looks like Korea and China are the future of EV’s. One question (newby so be gentle) though is the real world range driving on highways. In Australia people will travel 2-3 hours at 110km/h to get to a destination. Now obviously that will mean some real drain on the charge, but what would be the approximate rate (I know impossible depends on battery size etc). The one major problem we have here right now is the complete dearth of charging stations in country areas. This limits EV’s to the city mostly. Love both channels btw and especially the updates from China.
@@vladmihai306 Probably not in the UK, the MG6 didn't sell that well when it was sold. Shame as the replacement actually looked pretty decent. OK, I drove one of these for a few hours about a month ago (I've made friends with our local MG dealer - I own a ZS EV) and this is what I thought (for what it's worth!) Good Bits: - Loads of space, especially in the boot - The Price - The level of trim for The Price - The range for The Price - Easy to get used to (nothing too fiddly to work) - Obviously quicker than it appears... because EV - Decent driving position Bad Bits: - Front passenger seat is possibly the worst seat in a car I've encountered since I spent a whole day in the back of a 1999 Ford Galaxy...in 1999. Rear seats are fine though - The brake pedal didn't seem connected to the car at all (though with the regen, didn't seem to matter too much) - The suspension felt a bit on the soft side... but maybe that's just my own personal taste. It wasn't unbearable though As someone else has said in these comments, this would make an ideal taxi and I'd 100% agree with that - it would be ideal for that role. As a car however, my ZS is MUCH better despite it being a bit shorter legged. It's a shame that they couldn't combine the best bits of the two, though I'm sure that's in the works. On the whole, from someone who's driven one. Rob's made a very fair assessment of this car and despite it's (albeit few) flaws, I can see it being popular especially with the fleet market - which is something that's really needed for tomorrow's second hand market.
LIKE if an electric estate is appealing & SHARE if you think EVs should be more affordable
The MG5 is not only the first estate to join the electric car market, but it's also very competitively priced. Designed and made in China, this 5 door electric estate is solid, stable and well built. The interior may be a little dated, and it might not be the most exciting EV, but its impressive range, performance, driving ease and affordable cost show that MG are pitching this to sell to the masses. Being an estate, it is very spacious and, surprisingly, if you floor it, it will go like the clappers. It has some peculiar quirks but all of these can be overlooked when you consider what you are getting for the price.

The Wh/km value is wrong. Km is shorter than a mile so it means you're averaging 171Wh/km.
Had a deposit down for nearly a year now not long before we get it
It can charge at 80 kW, the 50 kW info is just given because many of the exisitng chargers are 50kW.
I love Tesla cars but for the revolution to really take off it needs car manufacturers producing run of the mill cars that are cheap, practical and yet still have all the advantages of an EV over ICE.
not a charging network then?

But the ZS has adaptive cruise control which I believe the MG5 doesn't have. Generally I think the MG5 will do very well in the UK, especially with taxi drivers. Cheapest build isn't usually the best quality. Infact when tested several years ago the majority of "quality" Chinese cars scored '0' at the Euro Ncap tests.
The producers are not stupid, you can't have best quality at cheapest price
@@leiyue1411 some buyers are stupid "7 Warranty!!, it must be reliable!!" 😆
@@Antoineforum I've only heard of Huawei. I owed one. It was absolutely terrible but to its credit still works. People will always have taste. Not everyone buys the cheapest things they can.
Go look up the MG ZS EV ncap score.
Love your down to earth ev reviews Robert, but could you show more of the interiors, cup holder size? USB sockets? Wireless charging even storage space / sunglasses holder? Etc etc. Keep up the good work cheers.
This was a 'First Drive' video. There will be a more comprehensive review at a later date.
To be honest if I wanted that I'd go to Autocar. I like that Bobby focuses on the broader picture of Chinese manufacturers moving into Europe (and succeeding).
Passat front end and Hyundai rear running on electric can't be bad for the money 👌. Another excellent review thanks 👍
Tell please why the heck they still making so looooong bonnet for BEV ?
Such thing is impractical isn't? IMO it's hard to see other cars approaching from sideways in the city streets
Crumple zone? Additional electronics and battery management stuff in there?
I bet this is based on a FWD platform, not a true ground up EV.
@@DanielZajic what platform? it's not like MG make any ICE cars.
It does give a big space for a frunk box. Once you take the plastic cover off.
@Ian G large wheels are inefficient and often compromise the ride.
Good to see an unbiased and objective review on this car, unlike the mainstream automotive press. This looks good value, but if MG could launch an electric MG3 with a 200 mile range, for sub £20k, I think they would sell like hot cakes.
This car is very, very similar to the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer, even down to the awful satnav lol
I'm glad im not the only one who thought the same!
I notice it has Android Auto and the Apple Car thing, so presumably no one is going to use the in-built system anyway?
I thought it was a VW Passat when I first saw it and can't stop seeing it now!
Because it uses a vauxhall (from the gm era) platform
because they could not afford to rent a beautiful mercedes to copy that
I’m loving this channel. Your charm and positive attitude combined with your extensive knowledge make it a pleasure watching your videos.
@Hare Brahs what kind of pos do you drive mate ? I presume you are using a Chinese built phone and laptop.
Something between passat 6,vauxall sw ... very impressive car,tnx a lot for your kind review.
Hi Mr K, I too thought the MG5 would be interesting - couple of criticisms on the car: the rear seats when flat dont provide a flat cargo deck and the range, nearer the Nero should be offered I feel....the main off putting factor for me - min mileage nearer 250 for a 2021 Chinese sourced car should be feasible
I love the simplicity and tactile nature of the console controls...but again, given that it comes from China, the screen should be much better executed
rather like the ability to sleep in the back occasionally when out in the wilds and that great hump when seats folded may be a compromise too far.. + personally, O wouldnt consider an EV with less than a 250 min mile range - we have moved on :) 2021 brings much higher expectations in range / £ purchase price
...maybe eat my words now that the price is so competitive...despite actual 165 mile range...
Great car for the price, definitely tempting. But for me, it looks 10 years old already! Not a terrible compromise for the price though!
You should understand they don't have a design department.
Looks modern inside , not sure what car you drive but must look really amazing. Have you seen new vw golf interior? It's very poor place to be
Very interesting and enjoyable review.....
Yes funding the CCP for only £320 a month!
@ and why not? They seem to be pushing the value proposition other auto manufacturers can't or won't.
@ As a mass market vehicle, it has to be safety tested like any other vehicle!
@@MrGonzonator I am not threatened at all when MG IS LITERALLY funding the fucking CCP like countless other “private “ companies in China. That’s what’s it’s really all about, their total monopoly of all private sector enterprises within China. You have to check it out dude, it’s rampant. You are paying for their new Navy lmao
Err, Kryten isn't very good at sums - it's a well known fact......!
I tell you the Chinese MG set of electric cars are very good looking!
Yes, but that's not an MG, it's a Roewe 😅🤷♀️
A brand new one can be had for £21k for the excite model, and £23k for the exclusive version. Very good value indeed.
You forgot to mention the additional 4k MG discount currently on offer. That makes the Exclusive around 24k
Just ordered at £23495 for exclusive model with metallic paint. Fantastic value.
Just bought an MG ZE because they couldn't get the estate till Feb2021 but loving the ZE because it has more room with the seats down than the MG5 estate
Did you test in northern ireland? The test car had a NI plate and the one in your garage was uk? I just wondered 😉
I noticed a sign for Beachy Head with the NI reg car going past..I think 2 similar cars,2 drivers, good editing!
Things I most appreciate about this car, actual buttons not stupid touch pads AND the drive selector isn’t on a stupid pod stuck to the side of the dial binnacle
It's cool and all, But it's no electric Skid Steer!
Great informative video. How does this boot space compare to the Passat estate 2016 which I currently own?
I would argue about the build quality, it might all seem nice and well built now, but I will wait to see how the car looks like after 100k miles. Then you can talk about build quality.
I'd say the same thing about Teslas. The MTBF on a touch-screen is under 10 years...
at least the roof won't fly off as you drive along.
7 year warranty May well answer that question.
Question. Can you plug it in to a normal house socket. I get 1 hour of free electric a day which would probably cover my use. Or do you need a special wired in cable?
Looking forward to the MG Metro 6R4 EV
Not bad at all... Will be advocating your smashing work somewhere un-expected btw. Have been with you for awhile and love your enthusiasm for the new frontier in auto motive.
Heated steering wheels come into their own, for anyone with bad circulation or those with HAVS. The former will have a comfier drive and the latter, will gain some relief from pain while gripping.
Yes, something to actually look forward to on a cold day!
Another decent EV from MG. Thanks for the review, Robert.
From Roewe - SAIC actually
Impressive car and price. Esp when VW ID3 starts at 29k (though has longer range) Looks bit like a Passat!
All li-on batteries arent made in china.
I would imagine 40% from china, 40% from japan and rest split across multiple countries.
Not much of a looker is it? Ideal family ‘bus’ though 👌🏻👍🏻
At the same time, it's not ugly. A lot of people seem to want "normal looking" cars. This might be a good thing, sales wise.
looks like a low spec Passat but I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. Lots of people buy boring looking entry level Pssats
Looks are not everything otherwise most of us would be on the shelf in perpetuity. :-)
I like the way it looks. And I like that it doesn't depend on a huge touch-screen for EVERYTHING.
Anyone old enough to remember when a "Made in Japan" sticker meant cheap junk? Guess what? Made in China is not necessarily cheap junk.
China will be big in european ev market.
Great car. Singapore Transport Group SMRT is getting 300 pieces. Great value and quality and green!!
Finally an electric sedan! Sick and tired of cross overs, suvs, ugly hatch backs.
You do know it is not a sedan/saloon. Its a station wagon/estate
@@jamesbedford7327 yeah. I just assumed we will get a sedan also
@@vladmihai306 Probably not in the UK, the MG6 didn't sell that well when it was sold. Shame as the replacement actually looked pretty decent. We're due to get the EV Coupe next, which is the one I'm looking out for.
The Infotainment quirks don't bother me that much as it supports Android Auto (and Apple Car Play) and that's what I tend to use in my XE anyway. That said, usability issues like that should not be present in a car, its not like they don't know how to design cars, they've been doing it for years.
@@MG_Steve THis is exactly what I want. A car like e-MG6, like Mazda 3 sedan, Skoda Octavia, the usual sedans, but in a full electric package. I would be very interested in one and if it would have 200mile range and cost ~25000-30000 euros, I would seriously think thing about buying it.
Bored to death of suvs, cross suvs and lifted hatchbacks.
I'm kinda interested in getting a EV wagon but there are none that matches my needs. It has to be able to do 400km on a charge regardless of weather, AWD and be quick (sub 6 second 0-100km/h). Still waiting patiently..
I'm glad that finally there is a estate BEV. But they could have gonna with a more exciting design
Fully agree. It's got me thinking, can't wait until Volvo release a ev estate, they make the best looking estates. Will be an instant buy
@@chrisscott1402 and then you will see the price and have more than second thoughts.
as a gasoline driver. i will admit weather does change range for us as well. but people tent to forget that. But it is a bit different. cold engine will have less power, but because it runs hot, that disadventage is gone in like a few km's, but with have headwind and mist your km/L will go down. the ac will also cost power. heat is freeish (its basicly engine inefficiently).
I don’t think anyone was waiting for an MG.
Then hopefully you have been pleasantly surprised! I don't have £40k plus to buy a Tesla
@@nigeledward-few9650 why the urge to buy an EV anyway? Modern ICE cars are actually very efficient and clean.
OK, I drove one of these for a few hours about a month ago (I've made friends with our local MG dealer - I own a ZS EV) and this is what I thought (for what it's worth!)
Good Bits:
- Loads of space, especially in the boot
- The Price
- The level of trim for The Price
- The range for The Price
- Easy to get used to (nothing too fiddly to work)
- Obviously quicker than it appears... because EV
- Decent driving position
Bad Bits:
- Front passenger seat is possibly the worst seat in a car I've encountered since I spent a whole day in the back of a 1999 Ford Galaxy...in 1999. Rear seats are fine though
- The brake pedal didn't seem connected to the car at all (though with the regen, didn't seem to matter too much)
- The suspension felt a bit on the soft side... but maybe that's just my own personal taste. It wasn't unbearable though
As someone else has said in these comments, this would make an ideal taxi and I'd 100% agree with that - it would be ideal for that role.
