  • The new 2020 MG5, the first fully electric estate in Europe is here, and we have been out and about test driving and testing the real world range. If you're not in one of these as a taxi within 6 months, i'll be very surprised, it's awesome.

    Looks like a sensible estate EV for those who want one. Really impressed how MG/SAIC have listened to complaints and added auto air con and even have a better chargepoint design at the front, amazing considering just how big a company SAIC are in China.

    Speaking of only screenwash and brake fluid being visible... Anyone remembers Audi A2 from early 2000's? That one had bonnet bolted shut, with only the essential things (screenwash top-up, oil top-up and oil level probe) available behind tilting "grill".

    There is absolutely a gap in the market for this. As a Kia Ceed Estate driver, we’ve looked at all of the EVs so far and all have lacked the practicality which we’ve enjoyed from our Ceed SW. Can’t wait to take one of these for a spin - I think it could realistically replace both our Ceed and the Zoe.

    • @AndersCMadsen
      @AndersCMadsen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am at the exact same point, driving a leased Kia Ceed SW (Estate in the UK) and I just checked - the measurements are almost identical to the 2021 Kia Ceed SW, except that they seem to have used some of the space for the back seats and given up some of the boot space, compared to the Ceed.
      This really has me excited since our current Ceed fits our needs perfectly as a family, and I can definitely see an MG5 as a viable alternative once the lease on the Ceed expires. I would prefer to stay with Kia (we are on our third Kia Ceed SW and have had nothing but good experiences with them), but if they don't do a proper electric version of the SW, the MG5 is a very strong contender.

    • @AndrewEbling
      @AndrewEbling 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndersCMadsen do you use a roof rack at all? MG can't make up their minds whether the MG5 is allowed to have a roof rack fitted. Major deal breaker for us. I can no longer take MG as a brand seriously as a result - telling this to customers who already took delivery is a sick joke. Glad I waited.

    • @AndersCMadsen
      @AndersCMadsen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndrewEbling no, not at all, so roof rack or not makes no difference to me.
      That being said, I would like to be able to use a trailer or even a small caravan, but I'm painfully aware that it's a long shot - at least the caravan.

    I managed to get one of these for the day recently and found it a really nice drive, in fact I've even asked for pricing to possibly switch from our ZS I'm that impressed, very well put together and great range even in the cold weather. The only issue I had during the day was the car suffering from slow rapid charging, probably due to the cold weather (3C to 5C) but I was expecting more than 29kW at 60% SOC after seeing the high numbers that have been in circulation regards this car. I tested this with two different rapids, a 150kW Shell Recharge unit and a 50kW EH rapid.

    Drove one today. Footwell a bit cramped as the floorpan a bit high with the battery underneath. If you're tall you can't raise the seat too much either - there would be roof space to sit higher but as the rear view mirror doesn't push up high enough it could badly block your view forward so you have to find the sweet spot for seat height and that's a little bit go-karty (low) especially if you are used to an SUV. Still, I did find a compromise that worked and I'm 6'4".The seats are comfy and supportive and not actually too low when you're getting in, and it drives very nicely to be fair. The speaker quality is absolutely terrible for audio. But for £10k cheaper than an eNiro I guess you can't complain (it'll annoy me tho). Not masses of places to put anything once you've filled the cup holders (no roof cubby for sunnies) but a couple of cheeky slots either side of the transmission (by your knee) to pop your phones - because you won't be looking at them while driving will you! Reversing camera good. Regen a bit weedy. Good value.

    Im currently driving a 2018 Mazda CX5 which is a fantastic car. However, I have wanted to move to electric and with Mazda strange decision that they want their upcoming car to be like its combustion sisters I decided I would have to look elsewhere. I initially wanted something similar in size at a decent price so took a test drive in a MG ZS. While the car was good it was getting close to the minimum mileage I would need. I decided to take the MG5 out for a run as its 200 + mileage gave me that little bit more confidence. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. It was quieter than the ZS, a bit more comfortable and most surprising of all I thought the seating despite not being an SUV, gave me the same sort of vantage. If i was to give it any down marks I would say the lack of a compatible app and the lack of I Pilot was its biggest feelings but at the price it was hard to argue. Needless to say I put a deposit down on one and now there is quite a bit of wait to get it in the colour i wanted (Silver) still it will give me something to look forward to.

    Killing time whilst my wife's MG ZS 1.8 we've had from new was having it's annual MoT test ( it passed ), I wandered along to the close by MG Motor Showroom. Lots of MG EVs there but what caught my eye were two MG5s in the main showroom display area. Had a close look at both.
    My own daily driver for the past six years has been an MG ZT-T 1.8T. A very useful workhorse and still a nice place to be and drive as ordinary cars go. Lets face it, most cars are ordinary. We also have and nine year old MG6 1.8 TSE GT in the family fleet. These Chinese MGs are much better "ordinary" cars than for whatever reason, UK car consumers we led to believe they were by some of the Motor Media journos. My hands on experience of three MG6s now shows these are indeed much better means of getting about than some would have us believe when they first appeared.
    Based on what I saw and the favourable reports on TH-cam, if and when my old ZT-T needs to be replaced ~ It's an estate ... like the MG5 .. whatever happened to the Estate car? Killed off by the multiplicity of SUV/Crossover lookalikes which now infest UK roads. None of those appeal and never will. The MG5 does.
    These Chinese built MGs appear to be selling in my UK neck of the woods and elsewhere in many other parts of the World too. My immediate next door neighbour recently had a charging point fixed on his garage wall. A new shiny MG ZS EV is now parked there. It carries a personal plate which previously was on a Lexus and Mercedes... Think about that. Car consumers like them.
    The "Electric" MG5 is the nearest car to an Old School Rover 75 "Tourer" or the MG ZT-T "Estate" to be offered so far to my way of thinking. Suits me Sir ... Double 👍..👍from me ..

    MG are smart enough to offer a good product at a decent price. Prefer the estate to the SUV.

    This is 27,495 pounds and the Enyaq iV is 33,450 pounds so it will be very interesting to see which sells better. The Enyaq will probably have better depreciation so might be more attractive with PCP contracts. Enyaq looks more modern and has VAG quality and is built in Europe. You can then subtract 3,000 pounds on both.

    It’s a shame the boot isn’t cleverer. People don’t just buy estates because of the bigger boot; they buy them because they are more flexible, too. Those seats don’t really fold flat and there’s quite a large load lip which is a shame. As you say, can imagine it mainly being a taxi. If it wasn’t an EV we are probably looking at a £16k Dacia rival here, I reckon. Nice interior too, just a shame about the placement of the infotainment screen. This will surely pave a positive few steps for MG, though...

  • @Brian-om2hh
    @Brian-om2hh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    MG have stolen a march here. The market needs something like this. However, it may not do too well in some markets given the amount of anti-China sentiment around just now. It has always surprised me that Nissan never capitalized on the their EV production experience by introducing more electric models. Nissan are even a bit light on hybrids at the moment. Anyway, MG are doing the right thing here, no doubt about that. We are sure to see more EV choices from many major makers in the years ahead...... Not too sure about MG's pricing though. £26k is getting closer to VW ID3 terrirory, although the VW won't quite match the MG for space and practicality. The Leaf can probably be discounted in this company, as it doesn't have battery heating/cooling. An important factor for some.

I'm not sure if he is a garage owner, but he has done a couple of videos at a garage where he inspected the underside of his car and what he shows is not good! There are several places where rust appears to be present at joints in the chassis. I think his car is about as old as yours, so I thought that I would give you a heads-up in case this is a more widespread problem. I'm disappointed, because I had more or less decided that my next car would be the ZS EV. Keep up the good work that you and Kate do! Phil

    Having watched both the videos again, I'm in a quandary. I like the dash layout, the 5th headrest, and the extra range is a huge plus point. But I'm leaning more towards the ZS because of the styling, ground clearance and massive sunroof. Lacking the extra bells and whistles of the driver aids, whilst not a deal breaker, is unusual, given the natural environment will be on the motorway.
    Personally think the ZS is beating it by a whisker, even with the lower range. But regardless, it's increasing the available choices, and that can only be a good thing...even if it does make picking a new car even trickier 🤦‍♂️
