Quick/easy to make and delicious! Looked over several recipes and yours got my attention. Did not like fact of recipes boiling for hours etc. I make soup regularly, this was first time making ham/pea soup. A new soup recipe, my family and friends will be after me to make. Your video is awesome, and to the facts. Will definitely be looking for more of your recipes.

Hi Rik. I think this was actually the first of your videos that I saw. I didn’t watch all of it at the time because I was looking for a ham hoc recipe to compare against my own. Having now watched this I can see where you were going with it. I muck around a lot with my split pea and ham hoc soup in that I boil the hocs into total submission, strain the liquid (tiny bones are not welcome), boil the split peas in the strained ham liquid, blend the cooked peas along with the fat and skin from the hoc, add the veg and shredded meat then cook for 30min. Ps. I put the fat and skin in with the peas as they cook for a couple of hours. When blended they homogenise nicely and creat a magically silky smooth texture. When cooled the resulting soup will actually solidify if not watered down. Unadulterated it makes a phenomenal addition to mashed potato, an unexpected layer/addition in pasta bakes, excellent baked bean (with ham and split peas) toasted sandwiches, stirred through potato or bean salads. Frozen-about 500ml added to 300ml water makes an awesome soup in the microwave. It goes well with rice too. My son uses it with leftover pork roast and vegetables for his pies. The uses are endless. I’ve even tried it thinly sliced on toast with grilled cheese which is messy but absolutely delicious.

Awesome tips and ideas Glen! Sometimes I use bacon so no bones. I was hoping you had a channel.♥ A dash of honey - less is best - gives ham another depth and same can be used with mushrooms, only very very small amount or the honey will overpower the delicate mushroom or ham flavours. And Apple, pork loves apple.

Split peas have a shelf life of about 1 year, after that they get very hard and can be almost impossible to soften completely. (you can liquidise but the soup will still have a slightly grainy texture). My advice is to use them quickly after purchasing and you will be alright.

alanporteous-oi2hx Salt may be your problem. Do not cook your peas in the ham stock. The salt will prevent them from ever becoming soft. Make your ham stock with just water. Cook your peas with the onion, celery and carrot, bay leaves and water. No salt. When peas are soft combine with the ham stock. Enjoy.
