    Please keep this video up forever! I have referred to it every time I've made pea soup for about the last 10 years. Everyone loves it and when we buy a ham every one is excited because it means this pea soup is coming!! Thanks for the great recipe and demonstration. 😁

    Mind blown. Best Pea soup ever. Word of caution don’t share it with friends you’ll be making it every week. It also freezes well. Thanks for keeping it simple!

    My mom made the best. She kept all her recipes in her head. When she passed I thought I would never eat good pea soup again...but this looks so much like it....Yum, Thank you!!!!

      When my Grandma passed and we were cleaning out her home I went for the recipe box and discovered no amounts written just ingredients. Was then I lamented not helping her in the kitchen. (MEN DON'T DO THAT ( IN HER HOUSE AS GUESTS) ANYWAY). But you continue trying and eventually you get damn close. The constant is no one beats her cooking because that makes her irrelevant in a funny way and your ethereal energy knows best. GIVE IT THE LOVE

      I actually use one or two smoked pork neckbones and a third of a ham steak. Neckbones are cheaper than ham hocks or shanks but they work just as well.

    i have found that if your soups are a little ''''thin'''' after cooking, the best way to thicken the soup ( besides a tater masher) up is to add a cup of INSTANT POTATOES to the mix..........really thickens up the soup and doesn't change the flavor or texture, the taters dissolve in the soup for the thickening process...................just saying...................works good on all soups.................

    • @HTMLguruLady2
      @HTMLguruLady2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need nasty instant potatoes!! Add extra peas to the cooker and then mash it.
      Actually if you do mash this a bit, it does thicken. Especially if you let it sit a little bit

    • @becausemynameiscommon5609
      @becausemynameiscommon5609 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HTMLguruLady2 Of course you don't "need," instant potatoes. Just like you don't "need" to use your suggestion. However, some people may find this more applicable. Instant potatoes are, you know, instant and if you are in a hurry it is one of the quicker ways to get it on the table.

    I've been making split pea and ham hock soup for nearly thirty years and I've tried all kinds of recipes. The way I make it is to just cover the ham hocks with spring water or well water in a crock pot and cook them for eight hours on medium heat. Then take them out of the water and put them on a plate and get out all the ham and bones (because the ham and bones give the soup a bitter off-taste). Then cut up the skin and cartilage into bite sized pieces and put them back in the crock pot. Then add the split peas and let the soup cook for several hours, stirring occasionally. I add a teaspoon of black pepper and usually about a teaspoon of salt, or maybe a half teaspoon of salt, depending on how salty the ham hocks are (salt to taste in other words). Then turn off the crock pot and let the soup cool to room temperature. Then put the pot in the refrigerator over night. The next day put the pot back in the heater and set the temperature to medium heat and cook it until it starts to liquefy a bit, and stir in about two cups of spring water or well water. Stir the soup every now and then until it is fully hot and everything is mixed in and all the peas are gotten off the bottom and are dissolved. Don't use the high heat setting because it will give the soup and off-flavor.
    This recipe is the best one I've found. I think if you add onions and other spices it covers up the taste of the peas (the peas have a special unique taste all by themselves). All you need is ham hocks, split peas, salt and pepper. I like to use ham hocks that are lighter in color because the ones that are smoked to a dark color don't taste as good, to me that is. Plus I'd rather use three small ones than two big ones because the small ones taste better, to me that is. Plus sometimes the small ones only take six hours to cook in the crock pot vs eight hours for the big ones. If you leave them in the crock pot over eight hours some of the flavor of the bones and ham will leach into the water and will give the soup a bitter off-taste.

    The ingredients are spot on for a wonderful slit pea soup. I can’t wait to make it. I must add that the peas should be rinsed throughly to get rid of bad peas and pebbles. I prefer to soak mine ahead cooking them. It makes them more tender. That said, you have an excellent recipe!❤️

    This is great thank you! As a former texas roadhouse employee I have to say- you should not melt the butter all the way when applying to the croutons it makes them soggy. Well theres a lot of specific steps but that's most important. You want the butter blobby and a little runny but not liquidy.

    I like to blast the ham hocks in the Instant Pot then use that ham liquid, pull off the meat and make the soup pretty much like you did. It’s just easier for me to make sure no bug fatty pieces get in, which grosses me out. This looks great and I am going to make it today!

    I like to leave the carrots whole, then pull them, and the hocks out, and blend the rest. Then I dice up the carrots and ham, and add them back in. I blended it once with the carrots in there, and it looked like baby crap. I learned my lesson. Sometimes, I add a can of peas and carrots, just for some added texture. Split Pea is a favorite of mine as well

      And like you said if they don’t eat pork and want the same flavour use a smoked turkey leg! :)

    Instead of a potato masher, my wife uses an immersion blender. It's pretty much the only thing we use that device for, but it does a great job of making the soup an even consistency. Of course we remove the meat before this and then add it back in after the soup has been blended.

    He is probably lucking out on the salt. I would leave the salt for last as the stock is salty and the ham can leach a LOT of salt into the soup. Also, a pinch of cumin is essential and makes this twice as good with no effort...really, twice as good.

    • @klontjespap
      @klontjespap 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, add the salt later, it tends to weaken if it blends in with the veggies anyway,
      adding it later makes it come out more, so helps for a low-sodium diet

    Sooo goood... Sooo easy... This should be considered a "lazy man"!
    By the way I used boneless already fat trimmed chicken breast and it was just a dish fit for a last supper. I felt like it was my last supper, so I stayed up all night looking at my front door completely paranoid because I feared someone was going to come to my house and take me to my death. ( I don't mean to offend, I just wanted to make a joke because this was really good!).

    Squeeze a pinch of lime or lemon juice in it, and the wow factor goes up!

    Does not need salt and water is fine.The ham hocks give sufficient flavour and plenty salt.
