I've always wondered when Misty changed to this "light" form. EG's version was never like this. When listening to EG's old recording's, it was never ment to be this light "perfumé" misty feeling. EG's old tune was always thick, passionate, almost cigar thick smokey like.
I mean, I went back and listened to EG's original recordings and I'm not sure what you mean, but probably the answer for this question is "it changed along with the Real Book and Johnny Mathis.". That's almost always what happens to jazz standards; the composer could've had a wildly different idea of what the song was in their head, but most people playing it today are going off of what they know of the most popular version and what's written in the Real Book (which often isn't entirely transcribed the exact way it was intended). Girl From Ipanema is the most obvious example (Adam Neely did a whole video on it I'd recommend it). It was originally written as a solo guitar ballad in Db major and then Frank Sinatra happened and recorded his version in F major with strings and stuff and that's the one we all know.
@@HyenaFox You are probably on to a part of it. Here is one example th-cam.com/video/P_tAU3GM9XI/w-d-xo.html . I mean it probably partly explains some of it. But even if musicians later on chose to play the piece "lighter", it's still a very big different from when EG played it. Ultimately i donøt think that the real book solely was responsible for the song changing, but ofc it had it's influence for setting some standards, or base notations for those pieces. I even remember me playing it for a big band the first time i encountered it. Later on i heard an EG recording and have never understood where it changed. Hey, thank you for the answer.

Thank you very much, this is so great! It increases my understanding of how to do various voicings so much. I appreciate if in another video, you could show how we use the pedal to sustain some of the notes, while also switch to hitting the keys to produce some shorter duration voicings to produce that jazz-like effects, and how to include side-slipping and sycopation, which where we should put the stress on to play louder, etc. Also, it will be even more useful to us if you could, in exactly the same melodies, try different voicing methods and speed to harmonize, so that we can have a feel of the difference in the overall effect. Love your teaching and thanks again!

Muchas Gracias !!!
Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud, I can't understand
I get misty, just holding your hand
Walk my way, and a thousand violins begin to play
Or it might be the sound of your hello, that music I hear
I get misty, the moment you're near
You can say that you're leading me on
But it's just what I want you to do
Don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost
That's why I'm following you
On my own, would I wander through this wonderland alone
Never knowing my right foot from my left, my hat from my glove
I'm too misty, and too much in love
I'm too misty, and too much in love
can you try autumn leaves please you are very good teacher :)

Love your teaching and thanks again!
acwl Thanks for the suggestions dude! I cover side-slipping with So What chords right here: th-cam.com/video/qhLyI4xGWnA/w-d-xo.htmlm40s - hope you find that useful. Cheers, PianoGroove.
Thank you so much for this and many others..I find keeping my motivation is hard if I get to easy a piece or one that's to hard.I get frustrated either way but I seem to make faster progress with your tutorials than any other...keep it up please!

I think so, too.
I love this song so much. Thank for the lesson =]
hello there! I have been researching the effectivness of TH-cam as a tool for education, specifically learning piano (I am a learning jazz pianist studying Music). I would like to know peoples experiences in using tutorials to help learn piano pieces- the benefits and the drawbacks!
Certain questions include:
- do you feel part of a community through the comment section?
- do you feel like youtube is a good substitute for having a private in-person teacher?
- do you feel you can ask the youtube tutor questions and have a good and useful response?
what do you think youtube misses?
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this amazing Upload. I learned that because you explained it perfectly. I am so grateful :-)
