Sorry if it's a stupid question. What is a college? Does your college depend on what course you do? Does a college limit certain facilities at other colleges? I'm in Year 11, so I'm confused.
You apply to a college when you apply to Oxford, and the college becomes your home for the entirety of your time there. (Your degree comes from Oxford itself) Different colleges offer different courses, and you can find out what colleges offer your course on the Oxford website. Although you can apply to a specific college, in the interest of fairness during admissions, you may still be reallocated to a different one. Colleges are more similar than different, but things like location, age, accommodation and facilities are things to take into account. For example, scientists like Keble college as its opposite the university science area. Generally though, the facilities across the university are excellent and if you cant access something in college itself, you can access it elsewhere! The open days are a good chance to check out all the colleges and work out what you like

Essentially, the university is just broken up into little chunks called colleges - they handle your accommodation, welfare, etc. - it’s a good way of making friends outside of your subject because normally there’s only a few people doing your subject in your college per year! Colleges aren’t a huge decision, I would recommend going to the open day and seeing where has the right atmosphere for you. LMH is further out than other colleges and has a large amount of space because of it, but if you applied to Hertford for example you’d be in the middle of the city and the college is very small and cosy! It really just depends on what you prefer. I applied to Mansfield this year, the reason being is the college only has one quad (you can’t get lost!) but has a lot of open space, so it felt very homely to me and not too intimidating. It’s also beautiful! There’s different reasons for choosing each college - if you like being near water, Worcester has a lake and LMH and Christ Church have their own boathouses. If you want accommodation for all three years on the same site, LMH and Keble (amongst others) offer this! (Other colleges, being smaller, often have houses or accommodation blocks slightly further out in Oxford.) If you want a modern college, St Catz is a good choice! I really like the collegiate system for a university because it blends campus and city in a good way. Campus unis are one site wholly dedicated to university - there’s shops on campus and everything! City universities have lots of buildings spread around the city, so your accommodation could be next to a shopping centre or the high street and the department building could be at the other end of the high street. I like Oxford because the two are blended - yes, you do venture out into the city, but the university dominates the city centre, and your college is more than just an accommodation block - there’s a common room, a dining room and a library at the very least. It means you’ve always got somewhere to go without venturing out into town, but town isn’t far away! Basically, there’s something for everyone but fundamentally it all comes down to little differences in preference like how close it is to departments or the centre of oxford, how old/new it is, do they have college pets etc., and whether or not you like the look of it! I know I’ve sort of blurred out a lot of info, sorry, but basically colleges are nothing to be afraid of, they’re just part of the Oxford system.

It also doesnt have any of the facilities or traditions I would associate with the university experience of Oxford. I am quite dissapointed by this and am seriously reconsidering my acceptence of my offer. Everyone always says you will love your college no matter what, but what if your college is everything you werent looking for? Can the wrong college (for me) also break the experience?
