As I said in the video but seems not to be getting across to a lot of people (sad times) - I’m aware oxford isn’t for everyone! It’s a very unique experience in many ways but that doesn’t make it bad. Yes, some of the traditions may seem daunting at first, but the fact students have voted to keep many of them shows they are enjoyed by many! Just because you don’t like the look of them doesn’t make people who do enjoy them horrible. Oxford does have huge access issues, but it is also home to lots of amazing, talented, lovely students who don’t all deserve to be painted with the same negative brush ☺️ x

Just wanted to clarify that your not expected to know latin for Classics at Oxford. They have a four year course where the first year is intensive Latin or Ancient Greek learning (which can be from scratch you just need an aptitude for languages).
Fair! A lot of my mates studying classics have said they do feel at a disadvantage compared to private school kids who have either studied Latin before or can afford private tuition alongside, and in modern languages they sometimes assume you know Latin that will help you with translations which can be very frustrating :(

Hi, I’ve just finished my second year of Classics at Oxford and can confirm that the majority of people at ox doing classics are from private schools. However there isn’t a really snobbish attitude among them and it’s more the result of few state schools offering Latin or Greek. Also the first year is not just intensive language learning but language learning (from scratch if you need) but language alongside the usual essays etc. It’s a four year course for everyone regardless of your a levels (it’s at Cambridge where the course is only 4 years if you don’t have Latin). Send me a message if you would like more info on Classics but just wanted to say a state school background should not result in an unhappy experience
As a Swiss classics student, I'm very surprised that people think you can study that at uni level without having at least notions of Greek and Latin and quite shocked that there is a problem of accessibility because of that (for context I've studied Latin for 6 y. and Greek for 5 in state school before starting uni).
I’m going to Oxford (hopefully) this autumn and I wanted to ask if you could have people stay round overnight (eg. If your siblings come to visit) and how much kitchen access you had in first year at LMH? How dressed up do you get for formal, like full prom dress or just a normal dress? Where do you buy your sub fusc from? I love this video, you really make me excited to go xx
Thought I'd give you as much info as I can. I graduated last year from Cambridge but there's a lot of similarities. So what I say might not be exactly right but might be helpful. Having people round overnight, at might college, you were technically supposed to sign them in with the porters and they could only stay for 3 nights but no one did that, siblings and partners came and went and some stayed for like two weeks at a time. Kitchen access I can't answer, it's really variable depending on college. Formal is whatever you want; I've gone in a floor length (not quite prom) dress, I've gone in sparkly trousers and a crop top. Most people tend to settle on the middle ground, sort of like cocktail dress or bodycon, or trousers and shirts/blouses. And subfusc I also can't answer because that's not a cambridge thing. I hope this was some help at least
I really do not get the negative comments. As I am from The Netherlands, I of course don't know everything about English colleges and traditions, but you have traditions everywhere. There are 'drinking societies' at my university here as well. To avoid offending people you could do the colleges video in a format where you directly ask people going to each college to debunk the myths and speak the truth on their respective college. In that way you can’t be accused of “shading” other colleges! Just an idea :)
Why hate on someone who has obviously worked hard for a large majority of their life and will continue to do so? No matter what their background is it is very clear that she is purely there due to her intelligence, academic background and work ethic. It is possible for anyone to do the same. Even if that path is looking damaged, u can overcome and adapt. So rather than hating on an individual who has achieved more than you, learn from them and ask them questions. We all are blessed as humans, the very people we are. And even if there was a point where she put in a slight “flex” about her past, she damn well has the right to because it wasn’t handed to her. She made it, shaped it, and took it and you can all do the same.

Can you maybe do a video on how you actually end up learning to write essays and know what to do at uni? Im going next year and I'm like HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO..!! 😊 ty x
It seems terrifying but for me at least I felt pretty supported. I wasn't graded on any of my essays (just exams) so even if the first one was terrible, I got advice for how to make the next one better. One of my tutors literally banned me from using certain words until I could prove I could write an essay without them because I overused them so much 😂 but yeah, so first year the essay titles were really similar to lectures, the reading lists were really detailed and precise about what to read and then as you got used to it by third year they'd be like 'meh, pick any essay you want, find your own reading list'
I've just finished my first year at Cambridge doing an English degree and I still have no idea what makes a good essay lol my Supervisors have all told me different things 😂
just to let u know there are loads of other universities with similar colleges like Durham and York (first ones that come to mind but im sure there are others)
could you please do a video about the college you go to? or any others you know? i'm hopefully going to study French and philosophy and i'd like to know which one is more suited for me! x
Love this video, Eve! I have a place at Univ College for English and am a bit worried about what you said about the support at Oxford in general not being good - do you know what it's like at Univ? Or if students can use support provision between different colleges? Thanks :) x
Colleges tend to have welfare deans, peer supporters (student helpers you can talk to in confidence), a nurse and lots of staff you can talk to if you’re struggling. I know some have money to help pay for therapy also and generally if you’re struggling there will be people go support you x
This was sooo funny omg! 😂😂 I love you! Btw, might be a silly question, but do Oxford students have lectures or tutorials etc on weekends? Or is it just catching up on work?
God this depiction looks awful, I literally couldn’t deal with the rich private school mentality / acting like literal children in order to strike some sort of balance? Couldn’t be me, but each to their own I guess!!
Eve Bennett yeah I get that. It’s just shone a light on the tired patriarchal concepts still alive today (that boys club with the current and ex prime minister makes me wanna vom), hope this is being tackled!!
Same! And not even considering that a lot of the traditions are the kind of thing that put working class people off universities like this. This entire video just made me want to say yikes!
Wasn’t the intention! The whole point is whilst the traditions still exist there is work going on to dismantle them, and I’ve really enjoyed my time there despite not going to private school! It’s definitely got problems but so does every uni :)
When you talked about how the people make a uni good or bad, I 100% agree. I went to a uni located 5h away from my home, because it had such good "reviews" from students about the professors and the staff. I have two uni's two hours away from home but one had a low score in the rankings and the second one is known for literally bullying their students (though they are high in the rankings) so even though I applied and got into all three, I went to the furthest one which I thought would be the best fit for me 😂 love it here though, I have an amazing group and the staff is so nice. They expect you to know everything and more but if you're struggling, they're more than willing to help you. So if someone is making a decision now - I recommend talking to some students at the different uni's that you're considering and asking them about the things that concern you ❤
the fact that you have enough money at uni to pay £20 to see classical music just goes to show that most ppl at oxford are pretty privileged & being able to afford posh dinners every week? lmao
I mean it literally doesn’t haha - most student tickets to the sheldonian are £5! This was an exception as it was a special concert - I really wouldn’t jump to such quick conclusions, I am fortunate enough to have enough money to have some disposable income, but not everything is super expensive - oxford rent is comparatively affordable and there are lots of bursaries in colleges that can supplement lower incomes! X
Also from what I can tell the “posh dinners” are heavily subsidised and the accommodation is so much cheaper than any other uni I’m looking at so if like me you are poor enough to get the full maintenance loan (which also means you’ll probably get a bursary from the uni) you will have a decent amount of money left over to treat yourself.
Formals I've been to ranged anywhere from £8-£18 (depending on whether wine was included or not and how much wine you got). Compared to a night out clubbing, a cinema ticket or even a one course meal at a restaurant, it's really not that expensive if that's what you want to spend your money on
Georgia Sweeney far enough, but when your maintenance loan doesn’t cover your accommodation, you earn £50 a week at your uni job which needs to cover your food & expenses. tbh I’m probably just jealous, and that’s a me problem but yeah just doesn’t portray what Uni is like for me & my friends but that’s cool
As I said in the video but seems not to be getting across to a lot of people (sad times) - I’m aware oxford isn’t for everyone!
Thanks for the video, loved it!
Thank you x
Love this video Eve xx
I am so jealous. Not because I wanna be at Oxford, but I wanna have that kind of college experience
It is so lovely having a smaller community ❤️
just to let u know there are loads of other universities with similar colleges like Durham and York (first ones that come to mind but im sure there are others)
I pursuing textile design and in India we just don't have that kind of college culture.
@@rad_raf trueee
Also can you do a video rating all the oxford colleges and like what’s good and bad about them ☺️ thanks
could you please do a video about the college you go to? or any others you know? i'm hopefully going to study French and philosophy and i'd like to know which one is more suited for me! x
for sure! X
Loved this vid xxx
Love this video, Eve! I have a place at Univ College for English and am a bit worried about what you said about the support at Oxford in general not being good - do you know what it's like at Univ? Or if students can use support provision between different colleges? Thanks :) x
Colleges tend to have welfare deans, peer supporters (student helpers you can talk to in confidence), a nurse and lots of staff you can talk to if you’re struggling. I know some have money to help pay for therapy also and generally if you’re struggling there will be people go support you x
@@RevisionWithEve thank you, that's reassured me a lot. I appreciate all your fab videos! X
omg as a French speaker ik nobody says sacre bleu at all
This sounds like my kind of school
As a long time follower

This was sooo funny omg! 😂😂 I love you! Btw, might be a silly question, but do Oxford students have lectures or tutorials etc on weekends? Or is it just catching up on work?
eve - "i sat eight or nine exams.......... It wAs fINe"
OMG I can't believe you have to know LATIN if you do classics! Must be very difficult for international students
Janet Cheng u don’t. You can do classics ab initio!
(Lol don’t hate me pls)
@Nicky L cos they may not have any prior knowledge of Latin
Whats iffy about Magdalen? I’m thinking of applying there so please tell me😭
Meg what are they like? Be straight about it
We need a cambridge vs oxford video
this was hilarious 😂
Omg you've grown soso much I love you 😍
thanks for your content :)
which colleges would you say have the friendliest reputation?
LMH, St. Peter’s, catz come immediately to mind! But I’m sure other people would say otherwise x
Hertford and Lincoln too!
Teddy Hall is super social!
Sub fusc actually means dark brown in latin
can you go to oxford colleges with just IGCSE?
This is such a great video, as always! By the way, are you still given work to do in between terms at University?
Great video!! Keep up the good work. You inspire me to make better videos on my own channel :)
God this depiction looks awful, I literally couldn’t deal with the rich private school mentality / acting like literal children in order to strike some sort of balance? Couldn’t be me, but each to their own I guess!!
It’s really not horrible it’s more just work hard play hard !!
Which I acknowledged in the video! Man I can’t do anything right haha
Why’s everyone always hating on and criticising Eve’s videos I genuinely don’t understand
Who knows hopefully taking a week off social media will help haha x
Eve Bennett I hope so, you don’t deserve this, luv u x
Nice experience. Presented very skilfully. By the way your presentation skills are awesome.
like the castefy phone cases
I loveee this video ❤❤🥰
Can you do a haul? I like any, but stuff like handbags and stuff!
I was at St John's many years ago. I'm nice! Lol xx
I hate how people get offended at everything nowadays. Eve has to keep explaining herself before people get mad😂😭😭
So if someone is making a decision now - I recommend talking to some students at the different uni's that you're considering and asking them about the things that concern you ❤
eve made a good point there 16:09
Do u have a tiktok I wanna follow u
I saw you in Fever Eve! I was too nervous to come over though😥😥
lmaoooo they speak latin at them? 😭 so you guys just sit there like 🗿 not understanding anything?
Depends on your education
what college did you go to ? x
Margret hall
the fact that you have enough money at uni to pay £20 to see classical music just goes to show that most ppl at oxford are pretty privileged & being able to afford posh dinners every week?
Also people don’t go to posh dinners every week - I usually go maybe once or twice a term!
Earlyyy! 💓
OMDS THE PERSON WHO DID THE STEP ON THE BRAKES TIKTOK WENT TO MY SECONDARY SCHOOL!!!
Don’t feel bad for saying Oxford has more work.... it literally does .... people need to stop being offended over facts lol xx
