- Apparently the plant grew in Númenor and was brought to Middle-earth by Númenóreans during the Second Age. In Gondor it grew as a wild herb, appreciated primarily for its fragrant blossoms and the Gondorians knew it as sweet galenas or more popularly as westmansweed, a reference to its origin.
It was not until the Third Age when it reached Eriador, probably through the Greenway, and the Bree-hobbits were the first to use it for smoking. From Bree the habit of smoking pipe-weed spread to other regions, as well as to other races, such as Men, Dwarves and Wizards.
But it was in the Shire where it was first domesticated, by Tobold Hornblower of Longbottom in Southfarthing around S.R. 1070. The cultivation and exportation of this herb became a key industry in the Shire, especially in the south. Popular varieties of pipe-weed included Longbottom Leaf, Old Toby, and Southern Star from the Shire.Perhaps less popular was Southlinch from Bree.
The Wizard Gandalf learned to smoke pipe-weed from the Hobbits and was often seen blowing smoke-rings. Saruman initially derided him for this, but at some point he took up smoking himself, and even had commerce with the Shire: After the destruction of Isengard, pipe-weed was found among its stores, but the Hobbits Merry and Pippin failed to realize the sinister implications.
After the War of the Ring, Meriadoc Brandybuck authored Herblore of the Shire discussing the origins and history of the Hobbits' 'art' of smoking Pipe-weed.

If you wish to try “Old Toby”, Tolkien’s favorite tobacco was “Capstan: Navy Cut”. After he died, the kids were cleaning out his home and they found hundreds of empty tins in his tool shed. Most likely, that is what he was imagining when he described “Old Toby”.
The sad part is you can no longer get the original.
Country Squire also has a wonderful blend called Old Toby which remains my favorite blend.
P3 Gaming I agree, but even then if it makes you feel better the tobacco today would taste different than the tobacco he smoked back then. Generations of plants later, the Capstan Blue we can get today probably has the same difference in flavor the Navy Cut would have today if it were still produced.

William Barnes Medium Blue isn’t produced anymore even though blue is and even then the tobacco still won’t taste the same due to decades of difference.

I used to live in this amazing world. My favorite thing as a child was the LOTR trilogy. The books and movies took me to a place I now find difficult to return to. But I do have my own pipe weed that helps. I have my own world of fantasy that I have yet to put down on paper. I just find it difficult to know where to begin. I suppose maybe something like
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”
Just like to point out the randomized writing of Tolkien. He can drift off on to other subjects and people still are intrigued. Chapter 19 of the Sillmarillion. Super random story within a story.

Lord on high, I relate to this. That's the purpose of entertainment. You need to find a way to escape from this world, weather it's eating rotten fruit as a monkey or reading Tolkien and drinking as a human.
@@knightseriou3258 it depends. Do drugs if you have the constitution to do it properly, but if you know yourself well enough to realize that it'll put you in a hole, for the love of God, don't.
My own kids are smart enough to avoid it. My older daughter is in high school, and she doesn't even want to. My son is younger, and he's frightened of drugs from what he's learned. Just goes to show, give kids what they need, and life happens as it should. Give them what they don't, and things will not turn out well for you or them.
I use to read lotr books and smoke pipe in summer days when I had vacation. Oh it's was life.
So yes pipes in the LOTR world would have probably been mostly clay. Clay pipes were always more popular because they gave a cleaner smoke compared to regular wood pipes. This is because they would not have had Briar pipes since they weren't made until the 1850's. I suspect Bilbo's pipe from the Hobbit movies would have actually have ben a clay churchwarden since he was from a well to do family. The books specifically say that Gandalf had a clay pipe as well. So, I actually found an online pipe shop that sells clay LOTR Gandalf and Bilbo pipes. I have only smoked clay pipes and Penn Valley Pipes had just what I have always wanted, a Terracotta clay churchwarden Gandalf pipe that looks almost identical to the movie pipe. Now if I could only grow a long grey beard every time I smoked.
So that's the reason? Damn, I've got to get myself a clay pipe. Or just keep smoking cigars.

Adults are just kids with bigger (and therefore more painful) brains. We all feel the same emotions, plants, animals, kids, adults. Just with different levels of understanding. Crying as a kid and drinking as an adult are both different solutions to the same problem.
Fun fact: in aztec times, tobacco was next to shrooms and other powerful psychedelics in terms of importance for mind expansion. Why? Because the original strains smoked in that area were very very powerful and somewhat psychedelic. If you can find it, it can give you tons of nicotine and a high not that unfamiliar to cannabis.
Also I want to point out that in europe at the time of writing the books, it was very popular to mix hashish into tobacco. Not that I'm saying he did or is referencing it, but history deems it plausible.

This is an analysis of botany and a cultural history of a fictional people and a fictional drug in a fantasy novel. There’s multiple strains and plants like old toby and the others. The power of literature! What a fucking writer Tolkien was!!
There are many strains of tobacco too. Virginias, perique, latakia, burley, cavandish, orientals. Old Toby is most likely best represented by Tolkiens favourite blend Capstan Navy Flake. It's worth noting too it was called Tobacco through the entirety of the Hobbit book. He made the name change to more suit the old world setting. Weed was barely being used as a term for marijuana in America at the time of writing so there's no chance an oxford professor of languages would have even heard the slang term for it.

By the way, all of the people who keep going on about how the Hobbits were smoking weed are wrong. It's not marijuana; it's just tobacco.
Tolkien uses the word "tobacco" in The Hobbit, but he changed it to "pipe-weed" in The Lord Of The Rings to sound more antique, since tobacco is a New World word. in this clip, which is taken from the prologue to The Lord Of The Rings, he uses both the words "tobacco" and "nicotiana" the scientific name for tobacco.
In the movies, they play on this misconception, but it's still a misconception.

Tolkien didn't intend pipe weed to be cannabis, we get it. But re-imagining it as cannabis is half the fun and one of the main reasons the books became so popular in the decade after publication, because people in the counter culture related to the fact that they also smoked cured herbs out of pipes. It's a fictional book.

Tolkien was an avid pipe smoker, a devout conservative Catholic, and a political conservative. I find it unlikely that he would promote marijuana smoking-especially as it would have prevented his books from being published at the time.

Nobody seems to understand that these are empty words from Saruman, in an attempt to insult Gandalf. This is made obvious by the fact the Saruman picks up the pipe himself, which is why Merry and Pippin find a stash. Why would he smoke the leaf if he thought it would slow his mind? Replace the "halfling's leaf" with anything else in that quote, and it's the same thing. "The TH-cam comment section has clearly slowed your mind." Although I'm sure the TH-cam example holds more merit, with the amount of simpletons in this comment section alone.
